‘SuperShelf’ aims to help food shelf users eat, feel better

When she joined the McLeod Emergency Food Shelf in 2013, Lennie Albers noted the shelving that held food items for food shelf users. They were old, rusty in places and looked more like shelving for hardware items than food.
“Most of what we had was very, very inexpensive. We were on a very, very tight budget,” Albers said. “We got by on a wing and a prayer.”

Glencoe City Council OKs bid for street seal coating this summer

Pleased the low bid was about $30,000 below the engineer’s estimate, the Glencoe City Council members were willing to overlook the notion only one company offered a bid at the city’s seal-coating project.
On Monday, July 15, the council selected Pearson Bros. Inc. of Hanover to perform the seal coating work. Its bid was $223,226.75. The engineer’s estimate for the work was $254,095.20.
With an eye on protecting its previous investment in streets, the city is focusing the seal coating project at streets it has worked on during the past five years.

Ypma retired July 9 as a probation officer after 45 years on the job – all in McLeod County.
“I loved working here,” Ypma said. “I’m grateful that I only made the front page once (for an award). I avoided the press. I didn’t want to be the focal point of attention.”
Rather, he said he wanted offenders he worked with “to live life to the max and be the man or woman they were meant to be. I always wanted to be a boots-on-the-ground guy.”

One of McLeod County’s newest employees, Julie Erickson, last week completed her first week of official duties in a position that’s new for her and the county: health and human services director.

Funding has already accumulated in the county's health insurance liability fund to cover the costs of the shortfall.
