School backpack program grows, needs more help

In their fourth year of the backpack program, volunteers with Common Cup Ministry and Hunger-Free McLeod are packing close to 200 backpacks with food for underfed children in the Glencoe-Silver Lake and Hutchinson school districts. And the need continues to increase.

Jessica Grams joins Chronicle news staff

Jessica “Jess” Grams, 35, is the newest member to the team of reporters at The McLeod County Chronicle, and began employment Monday.
She will be covering the Glencoe-Silver Lake school district and the Silver Lake City Council, among other feature stories and events.
She is a 1998 graduate of GSL, and studied theater at Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato. There, she earned a bachelor of arts degree in theater, and worked as a high school theater teacher for four years after college.

June Koktan, 86, of Glencoe, passed away on Monday, Nov. 24, 2014, at St. Mary's Care Center in Winsted.
Graveside service will be held Saturday, Dec. 6, at 1 p.m., at Holy Family Cemetery in Silver Lake.

Glencoe City Council agenda includes tax hearing, 2015 wages

The Glencoe City Council will meet Monday, Dec. 1, at 7 p.m., at the Glencoe City Center.

The annual taxation hearing will begin at 7:15 p.m., and the City Council will discuss the 2015 levy and employee wages.

Items for discussion include the medical cannabis proposal and an update on the demolition of the former Economart building.

County Board meeting, taxation hearing Tuesday

The McLeod County Board of Commissioners will have its regular meeting Tuesday at 4:30 p.m., followed by its annual truth in taxation hearing at 6 p.m. Both will be held in the Commissioners Room in the courthouse.

Among agenda items for the meeting are the replacement of the fishing pier at the Lake Marion Regional Park, revision of the McLeod County tobacco and smoke-free workplace ordinance, and recommendations from the County Board's budget committee.

Nelson submits resignation from Chamber

David Nelson, president of the Glencoe Area Chamber of Commerce the past two years, has submitted his resignation effective March 31, 2015.

In his resignation, Nelson confirmed his desire to transition back to a position in finance, business and economic development, as well as return to his primary home in the Mankato area.

The Chamber Board of Directors will meet Wednesday, Dec. 3, to discuss the job description and set a recruitment timeline.

Carl Aul, 94, of Glencoe

Carl Aul, 94, of Glencoe, died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2014, at Glencoe Regional Health Services Long-Term Care.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, Nov. 24, at the Church of St. Pius X in Glencoe with the Rev. Anthony Stubeda officiating. Laura Pettit was the reader. Sue Mielke was the organist and Kelly LeCrone was the song leader. Musical selections were “Be Not Afraid,” “Here I Am, Lord,” “On Eagle’s Wings,” and “Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory.” Military honors were by Glencoe VFW Post 5102.
