Firefighter challenge

Caylee Weidendorf, 6, was one of several children who tried their hand at manning a fire hose during Saturday's Glencoe Days Firefighter Challenge in Oak Leaf Park. Contestants tried to use water from the hose to push a pail tethered to a cable and attached to two trees. The first child to push the pail the length of the cable won.

Metcalfs sweep Glencoe Days Fun Run

The father-daughter tandem of Josh and Malayh Metcalf won the men's and women's two-mile runs, finishing in respective times of 11 minutes, eight seconds and 14:04.

Bruins rally past Brewers at Glencoe Days

Bruins rally past Brewers at Glencoe Days

It was a night more reminiscent of early-season football rather than mid-summer baseball, but the Brownton Bruins made the most of their trip to Glencoe Days to face the host Glencoe Brewers on Friday, June 21. Rallying from a 4-0 first-inning deficit, the Bruins made the most of the latter innings to prevail with a 7-4 victory at Vollmer Field.
A two-run homer by former Bruin Mason Goettl combined with a two-run single by Tyler Chap gave the Brewers a 4-0 advantage off of Brownton ace Ryan Grams before the initial frame had expired.

GSL skeeters fire away at state

The Glencoe-Silver Lake skeet shooting team concluded its season by competing in the state skeet championship at the Minneapolis Gun Club in Prior Lake on Wednesday, June 19.
The team finished 15th out of 18 teams with a total team score of 382.
In the varsity girls division, Katie Collins earned fifth place with a score of 88 out of 100. Mia LaPlante took eighth place with a score of 81.
In the boys varsity division, Brayden Goebel hit 85 of his 100 targets and Jonathan Bolland ended with a score of 71.
In the novice division, Trevor Kirchoff came in 10th place with a score of 57.

Glencoe VFW splits doubleheaders

The Glencoe VFW Post 5102 baseball team split a pair of doubleheaders last week, sharing the spoils with Belle Plaine on Monday, June 17, and Sibley East on Saturday, June 22.
Starting pitcher Zach Voelz tossed a two-hit shutout, striking out eight over a five-inning complete game as Glencoe topped Belle Plaine 9-0 in the first game of the first doubleheader.
Voelz, Jake Stifter and Mason Dietel each had two RBI, with Voelz also joining Carter Ruschmeier and Caden Lang with two hits.
Belle Plaine got the better of its hosts in the second game, winning 5-1 in five innings.

Glencoe brews up a win at Watertown heading into Townball Tour stop

It wasn't the kindest of weeks for the Glencoe Brewers, but the did muster up a weekend win over Watertown after dropping a pair of in-week contests against Bird Island and Brownton. The team carries a 5-7 overall record into a big Wednesday night home matchup against Young America that will be featured by FOX 9, as part of that television station's summer-long Townball Tour.
Glencoe was thumped by visiting Bird Island, 10-0, in a non-league game on Wednesday, June 19. The Brewers committed as many errors – 4 – in the contest as hits collected by the home side.

Plato drops three of four

It was a trying, yet exciting week for the Plato Blue Jays. While the defending state champions lost three of four games last week, the squad did have the opportunity to play on the "big stage" as part of the Minnesota Twins' Townball Classic at Target Field over the weekend.
Plato entered last week with a 6-3 record, but was promptly rapped on the nose in a 10-2 loss at Young America on Tuesday, June 18. Starting pitcher Chris Odegaard was battered about by the host Cardinals, allowing 11 hits and seven runs – three earned – while striking out four over seven innings.
