Softball loses two in extras

Back-to-back extra-inning losses last week dropped the Glencoe-Silver Lake softball team to 5-7 overall and 5-3 in the Wright County West Conference this spring.
“We’re certainly having trouble scoring lately,” coach Steve Davis said. “We just can’t get the bats going.”

GSL competes at True Team

The Glencoe-Silver Lake track and field teams competed at the Section 6AA True Team meet, held on Tuesday, May 5, at Litchfield High School. The Panthers boys’ took third, with the girls’ team taking eighth.
The True Team format rewards deeper teams for assigning point values to each competitor in an event commensurate to their finish, rather than only logging points for top finishers.

Bruins still undefeated after edging Green Isle 3-2 Sunday

The Brownton Bruins are still undefeated as they edged the visiting Green Isle Irish 3-2 Sunday afternoon at home.
The Irish scored a run in the first inning as Zach Herd and Lucas Herd got on base with back-to-back singles. An out later, Mac Zachow grounded out to second base to plate Zach Herd.
Green Isle went up 2-0 with another run in the third. Ach Herd again led off with a single, stole second base, and reached thir don an error, setting up an RBI-double by Brian Scherschlist.

Trap scores improve in Week 2

The Glencoe-Silver Lake trap team resides in sixth place in the Class 4A, Conference 4 standings after two weeks of competition at the Winthrop Game Protective League. 
The Panthers posted a total team score of 5133.5 in Week 2, after recording a score of 3839 in the opening week and began Week 3 competition on Monday with a total points tally of 8972.5. 

Girls’ golfers have nice day at Litchfield

The Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ golf team had its best 18-hole score of the season in the lair of the Dragon, recording a 394 over a pair of Wright County Conference West meets at Litchfield Golf Course on Tuesday, May 5.
Putting up a 195 as a team over the first nine-hole meet, the Panthers followed up with a 199 over the second meet and continue to hold onto third place in the WCC West overall standings. 

Brewers best A’s in 10

An 8-6 win in 10 innings at Arlington on Saturday, May 9, gave the Glencoe Brewers their second victory in a row and improved the team to 3-1 on the season heading into a 12-day break.
The Brewers got on the board in a big way against the A’s, posting a five-run first inning. However, the hosts chipped away and turned the deficit into a 6-5 lead by the end of the fifth inning. 

Boys’ golf keeps hauling the mail

Come rain or come shine, the Glencoe-Silver Lake boys’ golf team continues to hit the links this spring. Other than when thunderstorms with lightning interfere with their game – as it did at the cancelled Raider Invitational on Wednesday, May 6.
Weather-related calamities aside, the Panthers did get in three of their last four meets. 

Blue Jays win big at Belle Plaine

Another game, another blowout.
The Plato Blue Jays improved to 2-0 on the season with yet another lopsided result, this time 12-1 at the expense of host Belle Plaine on Friday, May 8. Plato, now 2-0 overall and 1-0 in Crow River Valley League play, proved to be rude visitors in the non-league matchup by means of the longball.
Chris Odegaard smashed three home runs, with a fourth round-tripper coming off the bat of Nolan Lepel.

GSL building bond passes

The Glencoe-Silver Lake School District’s $24.19 million building bond issue was approved by district voters on Tuesday, according to unofficial results announced after the polls closed.
The proposal passed with 1,534 yes votes to 908 no votes.
The vote passed in four of the five precincts, with the following unofficial tallies — Brownton: 215 in favor, 84 against; Glencoe: 861 in favor, 361 against; New Auburn: 43 in favor, 97 against; Plato: 165 in favor, 143 against; and Silver Lake: 250 in favor and 223 against.

Orlin Dammann, 83, of Glencoe

Orlin Dammann, 83, of Glencoe, formerly of Plato, died Monday, May 11, 2015, at Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia.
The memorial service and interment will be private.
A gathering of family and friends will be held Wednesday, May 13, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., at the Johnson-McBride Funeral Chapel in Glencoe.
