Deputy, Raptor Center vet unable to save red-tailed hawk hit here

Deputy Ken Reynolds from the McLeod County Sheriff’s Office received an unfortunate phone call from the University of Minnesota’s Raptor Center Wednesday, April 17. GSL’s spring play is in the ‘cards’

Glencoe-Silver Lake High School will present its spring play, a flashback to the days when people used playing cards for entertainment.
Remember the days when people would sit around a table with family or friends and play an old-fashioned game of Rummy, Snap, or 500? Now imagine that you were a member of the deck of cards and all you wanted was to not be discarded and thrown away. This is the premise of Glencoe-Silver Lake High School’s spring play “Card Play.” It will be presented May 2, 3, 4, 7 p.m., and May 5, 2 p.m., in the high school auditorium.

By Karen Seal Stewart
One year on from the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, the majority of Americans are seeing paltry benefits from President Donald Trump's tax cuts, if any at all, while the wealthiest among us are living like kings.
That’s because our tax code is so skewed in favor of the rich that there may as well be two different tax rates entirely: one for the top 1 percent, and another for everyone else. The fact is, that’s not far from the truth.

Welcome news – Our view: 21 is better than 18

As a community newspaper, we generally reserve this space for thoughts on local issues. However, a recent national news item with a potential local impact was too significant to pass by unnoticed.
U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, announced last week he would offer a bill next month requiring people be 21 years old to legally purchase and consume tobacco products. About 450 cities across the country have already enacted similar legislation on a local level. Minnesota is again considering similar legislation as part of its health and human service bill.
