GSL Math Counts team takes fifth at regional competition

The Glencoe-Silver Lake Math Counts team earned a solid fifth-place showing at the regional competition earlier this month.
GSL’s team of sixth- through eighth-graders finished fifth in field of 14 teams, just missing advancing to a state competition next month. The top three teams advance. The team from Dakota Meadows Middle School in Mankato won the competition.

County board gives Plato business owner a second chance

Lev Mirman, who operates an oil recycling company out of his residence, stood in front of commissioners at a McLeod County Board meeting once again as they decided the fate of his conditional use permit (CUP) which the board tabled at its last meeting. Also, Steve Mulder, M.D., president of Hutchinson Health, took to the podium to highlight statistics from Hutchinson Health’s “Health Care Home” initiative.

GSL’s Krysten Dane honored association’s ‘new achiever’

She’s one of those people who seemingly doesn’t have bad days at work. If that’s really true, it’s simply because Krysten Dane loves her job.
Dane is in her fourth year teaching family and consumer science classes to Glencoe-Silver Lake junior and senior high-schoolers. Her association, the Minnesota Association of Family & Consumer Science Teachers, recently honored Dane. She was named the association’s new achiever of the year.

City council eyes new metering system for water, power use

Fortuitous timing is allowing the Glencoe City Council and the Light & Power Board to merge interests and efforts to bring a new metering system that will allow more efficient use of water and electricity in the years to come.

Morningside Drive project costs swell

Having seen the cost of the proposal to extend County Road 15 south to Morningside Drive increase by nearly $1.35 million since 2017, the challenge before the City of Glencoe and McLeod County is convincing the ancillary parties involved the benefits they’ll supposedly see are worth the expected increased contribution in funding.

Gymnasts place eighth at sectional meet

The 2018-19 season came to a close for the Glencoe-Silver Lake gymnastics team last week as the Panthers placed eighth in the Section 2A championship meet on Thursday, Feb. 15, with a score of 119.950.
Mankato West won the nine-team competition with a score of 140.100 to take the section title over host Waconia, which placed second with 138.750.
GSL's Marissa Greeley missed out on a return trip to this weekend's state Class A championship meet after finishing 10th in floor exercise with a score of 9.000. Greeley qualified for the state meet on floor last season.

Matmen pinned in sectional opener

A 61-9 loss to Tri-City United in the opening round of the Section 2AA team tournament spelled the end of the full-squad season for the Glencoe-Silver Lake/Lester Prairie wrestling team.
The sixth-seeded Titans stormed past the No. 11 seed Panthers before upsetting third-seeded Delano in the meet on Saturday, Feb. 16 at Delano High School. TCU's section run came to an end in a 51-16 semifinal loss to eventual 2AA champion Waconia.

Boys' hoopsters end three-game losing skid

In a rescheduled matchup of a weather-postponed contest, the Glencoe-Silver Lake boys' basketball team concluded a three-game losing streak with a 61-46 win at Dassel-Cokato on Monday, Feb. 18.
Behind a team-high 18 points from guard Mitchel Jaskowiak, the Panthers led the vast majority of the contest, taking a 28-21 halftime advantage before going on to win by 15 points.
Guard Dane Schwirtz scored 12 points, with forwards Gage Alsleben and Jaden Uecker tallying 11 and eight points, respectively.

Girls' hoop takes three-game win streak into final week of regular season

A three-game winning streak last week ensured the Glencoe-Silver Lake girls' basketball team of finishing the 2018-19 season with no worse than a .500 record as the Panthers' pre-playoff schedule is set to conclude this Friday night.
After falling to 10-10 on the season, GSL rattled off home wins over Mound Westonka, Rockford and Dassel-Cokato to go three games over the break-even point with two regular-season games left to play.
