Swift uses his hands and warm heart for others

In his simple apartment, Richard Swift has a magazine holder and a TV entertainment cabinet. He made them both, the cabinet in 1999 and the magazine holder in the 1940s.
There are also a handful of other wooden items Smith has made with his own two hands. He has made small stepstools and extension cord spools. They may not be as detailed or attractive as the entertainment center or magazine holder, but they are every bit as meaningful.

Cities, county, school district hosting annual TnT hearings

Taxpayers in Glencoe, Brownton, Stewart and throughout McLeod County will have the chance to let their elected officials know where they stand on taxes at upcoming public hearings.
The annual truth-in-taxation hearings allow cities, the Glencoe-Silver Lake School District and McLeod County the opportunity to present their cases for proposed property tax increases for 2019. Taxpayers will have the opportunity to let their elected representatives know what they think of the plans.

Mobile, telephone crisis response put to use in McLeod, area counties

McLeod County received grant funding from the Minnesota Department of Human Services to develop and implement telephone and mobile crisis response services, which has materialized into the McLeod County Mental Health and Crisis Mobile and Telephone Response.
Melanie Warm-Taylor, Carver County mental health crisis program supervisor, presented information about the program at the county board meeting on Nov. 20.

McLeod County TZD contributing to safer roads

McLeod County Towards Zero Deaths (TZD), a safe roads coalition with a mission to decrease traffic related injuries and fatalities, gave a presentation to county commissioners at a county board meeting on Nov. 20. The partnership is between the Minnesota Departments of Public Safety, Transportation and Health and the University of Minnesota, along with other stakeholders.
TZD’s statewide goal for Minnesota is to achieve less than 300 fatalities and 850 serious injuries on Minnesota roads by 2020.

Lorna Kocourek, 86, of Glencoe

Lorna Doris (Black) Kocourek, passed away Thursday, Nov. 22, at Grand Meadows in Glencoe, at the age of 86 years, 7 months and 27 days. She was formerly of Lester Prairie.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 27, 11 a.m., at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie. Pastor Joshua Arndt officiated. Jane Fasching was the pianist and Chuck Thiel was the musician and soloist.
Steven Black, David Black, Marcel Black, Scott Black, Connie Smith and Dean Larson served as pallbearers.
Her grandchildren were honorary pallbearers.

LaVera Droege, 82, of Glencoe

LaVera Droege, 82, of Glencoe, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 21, at Abbott Northwestern Hospital.
A funeral service was held Monday, Nov. 26, 11 a.m., at Johnson-McBride Funeral Chapel in Glencoe with interment in the Glencoe City Cemetery.
Pastor Jon Niebuhr was the officiating clergy.
Pastor Niebuhr led special music, “In The Garden,” “Little Brown Church,” “On Eagle’s Wings.”
LaVera’s granddaughters were honorary casket-bearers. Her grandsons were the casket-bearers.

Kenneth Lassen, 81, Minneapolis

Kenneth H. Lassen, 81, departed this life Friday, Nov. 9, in Minneapolis. He was a resident of Minneapolis and a longtime member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.
Ken was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Tillie (Knutson) Lassen; and sister, Dorothy Henderson.
He is survived by sister, Carol Larson (Paul) of Washington; uncle, Duane Knutson (Andrea) of Florida; and numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins.

Jane L. Meyer, 80, of Bloomington

Jane L. Meyer, 80, of Bloomington, was called back to the Lord Nov. 21.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Alfred and Franziska Meyer; survived by her brothers, Leroy Meyer (Eunice) and Duane Meyer; nephews, James Meyer, Gerald Meyer (Sue), Perry Meyer (Greta); and niece, Rhonda Domagala (Jeff).
Ms. Meyer was born in Glencoe. She earned her bachelor’s degree in education at Valparaiso University and taught third through sixth grades at Cornelia Elementary in Edina for 39 years.

Bruce Ponath, 53, of Belle Plaine

Bruce Ponath, 53, of Belle Plaine, passed away Saturday, Nov. 24, at Hennepin Healthcare in Minneapolis.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 30, at Our Lady of the Prairie Catholic Church in Belle Plaine. Fr. Brian Lynch will officiate the funeral Mass.
Visitation will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. prior to Mass. Interment will be in Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Cemetery in Belle Plaine.

Bright lights have downtown Glencoe decked out for the holidays

Municipal electric workers installed holiday decorations on street light poles last Monday (Nov. 19). The decorations bring a touch of the holidays to city streets.
