A special kind of mom

ditor

Council weighing slight hike in ‘balanced’ general fund budget for 2019

A minor increase in spending is proposed with a corresponding bump in revenue as the Glencoe City Council weighs its operating budget for 2019.
Meeting in a workshop Monday afternoon, Oct. 22, the city council reviewed a proposed general fund budget with about $3.808 million in revenue paying for approximately $3.802 million in spending for services that include police, fire, public works and parks services. The increases from 2017 are 2.639 percent on the revenue side and 2.306 percent in additional spending.
The city council will take up the proposed budget later this fall.

Kudos to the city council for following state law

Rather than discuss the issue privately before or after the Oct. 15 city council meeting, Glencoe City Councilor John Schrupp decided to publicly ask fellow Councilor Allen Robeck why he voted against going into a closed session two weeks earlier. The intent of the closed session was to discuss the proposed purchase and sale of land to the Glencoe power co-op using city funds.
Robeck replied he believed the council should do its business in public. It was a noble but not a complete response.

Please support GSL School District’s requested operating levy

To the editor,
The Glencoe-Silver Lake Public School system is asking our voters to approve the operating levy on Nov. 6, 2018.
This vote is a part of the general election and you would vote at your regular place you normally vote. You do not vote at the school.
The operating levy is a very important part of our budget and it has been in place for many, many years. It is important to the district to keep our programs and services for our students, maintain our 20 percent fund balance policy, and to maximize the state aid that comes as a part of this levy.

Whether you vote for the person or the political party, make sure you vote

In a span of 24 hours recently, I was accused of being a left-wing liberal and a right-wing conservative by two different acquaintances. Now I’m confused.
On the other hand, it confirms an old newspaper adage: “If you get all sides mad at you, you must be doing something right!” As the editor of The Chronicle, I was often accused of trying to agitate as many people as possible. I never denied it if it got readers thinking.
Actually the recent accusations verified what I’ve always thought. I’m an independent, and most people have no clue about my political leanings, including myself.
