‘Babbling Brooks’ to open Thursday night

The Glencoe-Silver Lake High School spring play, “The Babbling Brooks,” will be presented April 27-30 at the Glencoe-Silver Lake High School Auditorium.
The production, by Kurtz Gordon, is a comedy about family life in the early 1950s.  Director Patrick Hiltner and his cast and crew are learning a lot about the time period of the early 1950s as they work on the production. There is a significant difference between the early and late 1950s.  When you hear of the 1950s, you typically think about burger places, sock-hops, and rock-n-roll.  The early 1950s, however, involved a simpler lifestyle.
“The Babbling Brooks” is based on the Brooks family.   Nettie Brooks, the mother of the family, simply cannot hear a bit of gossip without relaying it to her neighbors in an exaggerated style. While her husband is out of town on a business trip for two weeks, she tries to run the household while sharing the gossip with her neighbor Bessie. Her teenage children are keeping her on her toes as they are beginning new relationships, working on a neighborhood newspaper, and working through puppy love. In addition, Nettie’s mother-in-law and two women who are renting the upstairs rooms add chaos and confusion for the family. A mysterious murder brings conflict into the Brooks’ home as they come to terms with the realities of gossip. The style of the show is very similar to an early 1950s television sitcom.
Students participating in the production include seniors Marissa Kirchoff, Marisa Luchsinger, Brandi Pikal, Dini Schweikert and Katie Twiss; junior, Austin Pinske; sophomores, Leah Bettcher, Beth Cross, Kaitlyn Doolittle, Molly Green, Haley Lukes, Bryanna Paul, Jacob Reichow and Grace Witte; and freshmen, Izzy Elias and Rachael Meyer.
The production of “The Babbling Brooks” will run Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, April 27, 28 and 29 at 7:30 p.m. There also will be a Sunday matinee on April 30 at 2 p.m. Cost is $6 for adults and $4 for students.
