‘Sound the Alarm’ effort coming to Brownton, SL, Stewart, Hutch

The American Red Cross asks everyone to help Sound the Alarm in McLeod County and be part of the nationwide Red Cross effort to help reduce the number of deaths and injuries from home fires. Community members can register for free smoke alarm installations and volunteer to help at events.
The American Red Cross serving Southwest Minnesota invites the public to join the Sound the Alarm home fire safety and smoke alarm installation event on Saturday, May 5, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Together, along with our partners from the Brownton, Hutchinson, Silver Lake and Stewart fire departments and volunteers, the Red Cross will help make these communities safer.
“Home fires are the biggest disaster threat we face, killing seven people in this country every day,” said Leah Pochrandt, executive director of the American Red Cross serving Southwest Minnesota. “In our region, we respond to more than 600 home fires every year. Please help us Sound the Alarm by volunteering to install smoke alarms in your community, making a financial contribution, or taking steps to protect your own family from home fires.”
To request a free smoke alarm, call the smoke alarm hotline at 612-460-3674, or text “Alarm” to 844-811-0100.
Volunteers are needed to help install the alarms. To volunteer, sign up online at http://bit.ly/STAMcLeodCanvass or call 612-460-3670.
The installation event is Saturday, May 5, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sign up at soundthealarm.org/mn or call 612-460-3670.
The Home Fire Campaign is making a difference. Since its inception, the Red Cross and its partners across the country have saved at least 416 lives through the Home Fire Campaign. In Minnesota, the Red Cross has installed more than 10,000 alarms and it’s on track to install thousands more.
Nationwide, the Red Cross will Sound the Alarm through a series of smoke alarm installation and fire safety events in more than 100 high-risk communities. From April 28 through May 13, Red Cross volunteers and partners will install 100,000 free smoke alarms. These events are related to the Red Cross Home Fire Campaign, which since 2014 has helped save lives through smoke alarm installations and home fire safety education in thousands of communities.
The Red Cross responds to nearly 64,000 disasters a year, the majority of which are home fires. Home fires represent a significant threat to our communities, which is why the Red Cross launched the nationwide Home Fire Campaign and rallied an army of volunteers, donors, and partners to canvass high-risk neighborhoods, install free smoke alarms, replace batteries in existing alarms and help families create escape plans.
