The McLeod County Chronicle
Panthers enter WCC play on nine-game win streak
By Tom Carothers
Sports Editor
It seems so long ago that the
Glencoe-Silver Lake boys’
basketball team opened its
season with an 0-3 record.
Nine victories ago, to be
exact.
The Panthers finished off
the pre-conference portion of
their schedule with three consecutive wins last week to up
its streak of victories to nine
games as the squad prepares
to open Wright County Conference West competition on
Friday against visiting Litchfield.
“This team is just incredible,” coach Robb DeCorsey
said. “It’s such a good group
to coach – they are learning
more and more every day.”
A run that began with a 6550 win at Hutchinson a month
ago carried through the first
week of 2017 as GSL slogged
through a trio of contests
against prospective Section
2AA competitors in Jordan,
Belle Plaine and LeSueurHenderson.
It was far from easy, but the
Panthers were able to take all
three contests to improve their
record against sectional opponents to 4-3 and their overall
mark to 9-3.
“We were dead by the end
of it,” DeCorsey said. “After
three games in a week, we
were tired.”
GSL took a 45-32 halftime
lead against visiting Jordan on
Tuesday, Jan. 3, but had to
battle to hang on to the edge
against a Hubmen second-half
rally before claiming a 69-62
win.
Four Panthers scored in
double digits, led by guard
Luke Frahm with 14 points
and forward Kyle Christensen
with 13 points. Guard Ben
Donnay and forward Jacob
Litzau each logged 10 points.
A trip to Belle Plaine on
Thursday, Jan. 5, proved both
familiar and equally arduous.
After seizing a 33-15 lead at
the break, GSL again had to
scuffle to hang on for the win
against a headlong secondhalf charge from the Tigers
before walking away with a
52-44 win.
Frahm led all scorers with
17 points, while Litzau posted
12 points.
DeCorsey
said
the
postgame locker room scene
at Belle Plaine belied the
streak that the Panthers had
managed to maintain.
“Our guys had won eight
straight, but it looked like we
lost,” he said. “A lot of guys
were down about not having a
good game, but I told them
that it was time to celebrate –
I mean, eight wins in a row is
something to be proud of.”
A third and final contest
awaited the weary Panthers on
Friday, Jan. 6, with LeSueurHenderson paying GSL a
visit.
“There was a fear of maybe
overlooking that game because LeSueur-Henderson
only has a couple of wins, but
they always play us hard,”
DeCorsey said.
The Panthers led by as
many as eight points in the
first half, but the Giants did
not go away.
GSL led 31-26 at the break,
but the visitors surged ahead
by as many as six points at
49-43 with six-and-a-half
minutes to play as the Panthers went over four minutes
without putting the ball in the
basket.
“We put forth a lot of effort
in both the Jordan and Belle
Plaine games,” DeCorsey
said. “Our guys were so dead
– just weren’t doing the
plays.”
However, all was not lost as
the Panthers picked themselves up off the mat and got
back into the contest.
A six-point rally leveled the
count at 49-49 with five minutes to go. After some backand-forth, a steal by Nick
Schmidt led to a Frahm layup

Gymnasts open 2017
with a pair of meets
By Tom Carothers
Sports Editor
The Glencoe-Silver Lake
gymnastics team opened the
new year with a pair of meets,
as coach Kim Hahn continues
to be impressed by the
progress of her squad.
“The team is performing
great,” she said. “We have had
consistent team scores this
season and also got a season
high at Big Lake.”
A score of 117 at the Big
Lake Tropical Twist Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 7, surpassed the Panthers’ previous
high of 116.525 set in a meet
against Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted on Dec. 13.
GSL record a 31.7 on vault,
27.65 on uneven bars, 25.9 on
balance beam and 31.75 on
floor exercise to finish eighth
overall in the team standings.
The Big Lake Invite came
two days after the Panthers
hosted Orono in a Wright
County Conference dual meet.
GSL scored a 115.450 to
126.175 for the Spartans.
Marissa Greeley finished
third in the individual allaround with a 29.65, while

The Glencoe-Silver Lake
girls’ basketball team
wrapped up its pre-conference schedule with a pair of
wins against Section 2AA
competitors last week.
The Panthers were able
to improve their case for
future sectional playoff
seeding by downing Jordan
74-60 on Tuesday, Jan. 3,
and then defeating GibbonFairfax-Winthrop 78-63
two nights later.
Against Jordan, guard
McKenna Monahan led a
trio of GSL double-digit
scorers with 21 points to go
with six rebounds, five
steals and four assists.
Guard Maddie Monahan
had 14 points with nine rebounds and team highs of
eight assists and six steals.
Backcourt mate Olivia
Lemke had 11 points with
three steals, while forward
Samantha Voigt posted a
team-high 12 rebounds.
The Panthers rallied from
a 32-29 halftime deficit in
topping GFW with a 49-31
second-half outburst as four
players managed double
digits in scoring.
Maddie and McKenna
Monahan had 23 and 14
points, respectively, while
Voigt scored 12 points and
guard Miah Monahan
logged 11 points. Forward
Mickalyn Frahm and Maddie Monahan recorded 11
rebounds apiece.
Unfortunately for GSL,
the Wright County Conference West slate opened at
2016 state finalist New
London-Spicer.
The Wildcats nearly doubled-up their visitors in the
first half, taking a 45-24
lead into the locker room,
before the Panthers played
nearly even in the second
half before falling 77-53.
Maddie Monahan led
GSL with 29 points, six rebounds, five steals and four
assists in the defeat.
The Panthers’ home
game against Dassel-Cokato, originally scheduled for
Tuesday, Jan. 10, was postponed due to inclement
weather.
GSL is scheduled to resume competition on Friday at Litchfield.

Makayla Wigern and her fellow Glencoe-Silver Lake gymnasts are scheduled to compete in an invitational
meet in Farmington, beginning at
11:15 a.m. Saturday morning.
By Tom Carothers

Competing in just its second meet since Dec. 13, the
Glencoe-Silver Lake/Lester
Prairie wrestling team finished third in the Ogilvie
Lions Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 7.
“After having so much
time off in the past month, it
was good to see them get
back at it,” coach Lance
Wurm said.
Wurm noted that it took a
little bit for the Panthers to
“knock the rust off” as they
competed for the first time
since Dec. 22.
“After the first round, we
got back to wrestling the
way we should be
wrestling,” he said.
GSL/LP finished with 142
points in taking third. St.
Croix Falls won the meet
with 208.5 points.
Panther grapplers earned
a pair of individual firstplace finishes in their respective weight classes.
Kole Polzin took first at
138 pounds after scoring a
13-5 major decision against
Spencer Langer of St. Croix
Falls to go perfect on the
day.
Paul Lemke won the 285pound bracket by finishing
off a spotless day with a win
by fall against St. Croix
Falls’ Kyle Drinken.
GSL/LP also recorded
four third-place finishes, including Zachary Voelz at
106, Tanner Chmielewski at
120, Dalton Kosek at 160
and Cody Rae at 170.
Unfortunately for the
Panthers, the Ogilvie meet
will be the team’s final competition for at least another
week as the outbreak of skin
herpes that sidelined the
squad through much of December has re-emerged.
“We’ve got skin issues
going again,” Wurm said.
“We wrestle for a week and
something happens. Something’s wrong.”
Thursday’s meet at Dassel-Cokato has been postponed, as has Friday night’s
“Takedown Cancer Night”
at Lester Prairie against
Norwood Young America.
Gymnastics Continued from page 1B
Gia Venier took fifth with a
29.225.
Venier placed second on
vault with an 8.825 and was
third on both beam and floor
with respective scores of
8.075 and 7.975.
Greeley was fifth on vault
(8.3), beam (7.275) and floor
(7.8).
Mikayla Wigern cracked
the top five on vault, finishing fourth with an 8.4.
The GSL junior varsity
scored a 75.15 to Orono’s
84.85. Amber Orr placed
second in the individual allaround with a score of
21.85.
“They are doing awesome
– working hard on changing
up difficulty and working on
execution as well,” Hahn
said of her gymnasts.
A home dual against St.
Peter, scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 10, was postponed
due to inclement weather.
GSL is slated to compete
in an invitational meet at the
Farmington Instructional
Service Center on Saturday.

Panthers past and future line up for anthem
Members of the current Glencoe-Silver Lake varsity girls’ basketball team
lined up with players from coach
Clark Christenen’s GSL fifth-grade
girls’ squad for the national anthem
prior to the Panthers’ game against
to put the hosts up for good
at 55-53 with just under
three minutes in regulation.
From there, it was all GSL
as the Panthers scored nine
of the game’s final 10 points
to finish off a 19-3 run and
secure the 64-54 win.
“These guys have a lot of
spirit,” DeCorsey said.
Final statistics for the
game were not available.
Standing between GSL
and a 10th consecutive win
is Litchfield, which comes
to town Friday night with a
Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop on Thursday, Jan. 5. The fifth-graders had the
opportunity to hit the court for a
scrimmage at halftime of the varsity
contest.

team will be ready for the
challenge.
“These guys are such a
great group of gym rats,”
DeCorsey said. “Just a
tremendous group – each
and every one of them has
made big contributions to
this winning streak. Everyone is gunning for us now,

hat a terrible insult it is to call someone dependent. We live in a do it yourself society and it goes against the grain
in so many ways that for some DIY types, there would be nothing more demeaning than to be considered dependent or in need.
Yes even us who identify ourselves as Christians line up one by one as we try to get out of the boat and walk on water. It is
as if we think that somehow we will do it better than Peter. We can talk our self into thinking if Peter can do it; I can do it a little better. Funny, we say Peter walked on water, but we say it as if we do not know the account. Yes, as soon as Peter gets to
walking he takes his eyes off of Jesus and starts to drown.
Once Peter takes his eyes off of Jesus the wind, and the waves of the storm in his life quickly overwhelms Peter. Similarly,
our days are filled with so many things that another day can pass where we spend no time looking toward Jesus and we feel as
if we are drowning in what is before us. John 15:5 “I am the vine and you are the branches. The one who remains in Me, and I
in him, will bear much fruit. For apart from Me you can do nothing.”
It is for those who are dependent on Jesus who tastes real fullness and victory as it was meant to be in this life.
