It was an exciting start to
the new year for the Glencoe-
Silver Lake boys’ basketball
team as the Panthers began
2015 with a 62-56 overtime
victory at rival Hutchinson on
Tuesday, Jan. 6.
“Hutchinson is a good team
and we knew that,” coach
Robb DeCorsey said. “We
knew it was going to be a bat-
tle and it was. We made
enough plays to come out on
top.”
GSL overcame a difficult
shooting night to claim the
clutch road victory. DeCorsey
noted that despite his squad
“getting good looks,” the ball
showed a great reluctance to
fall through the hoop. While
the Panthers’ shooting woes
made the game much closer
than it otherwise might have
been, he commended the
team for finding a way to
win.
“We missed a lot of shots
early, but didn’t freak out or
anything,” DeCorsey said.
“We made enough plays to
come out on top.”
Four GSL players finished
in double figures in scoring,
led by guards Mason Goettl
and Teddy Petersen, both of
whom recorded 14 points in
the game. Forward Garrett
Ober was a force in the paint
with 13 points, 11 rebounds
and five blocks. Guard
Keaton Anderson scored 12
points with nine rebounds,
while Jacob “Cubby” Popelka
chipped in seven points and
six rebounds in the winning
effort.
“It was tough out there,”
Goettl said. “Definitely a bat-
tle and insanely physical.
Without a doubt, I’d play
them again.”
However, with the Tigers
not paying a return visit to
GSL due to the Wright Coun-
ty Conference new competi-
tive format, a lone overtime
victory will have to do for the
Panthers for this season.
Not letting the disappoint-
ment of not facing Hutchin-
son again this year get to
them, GSL turned up the de-
fensive intensity Jan. 9 to
claim a 57-35 home win over
New London-Spicer. It was
the opening tilt of the Wright
County western division
schedule for both sides.
Still having difficulty find-
ing their collective shooting
stroke, the Panthers bore their
claws on defense. The 35
points allowed were the
fewest GSL has given up in a
game this season. The top
two offensive players for
NLS, forwards Shane Zylstra
and Devin Fostervold, were
held to a combined 14 points
by the respective guarding ef-
forts of Ober and Goettl.
“We didn’t know a lot
about (NLS) coming in, ”
DeCorsey said. “We came out
and played our game. I felt
we played very hard and kind
of broke their spirit.”
Anderson and Popelka
each recorded 15 points and
six rebounds in the game,
with Goettl scoring 11 points.
Ober logged seven points,
nine rebounds and two
blocks. The win improved
GSL’s record to 8-3 overall
and 1-0 in the Wright County
West.
While the Panthers began
2015 with a pair of victories,
DeCorsey was quick to point
out the team’s need to im-
prove on its shooting. “We
weren’t great offensively last
week. We need to find our
shooting touch or that will
come back to bite us.”
GSL will search for its shot
on the road this week. The
Panthers played at Litchfield
on Tuesday and will hop on
the bus again for a trip to An-
nandale on Friday.
“Annandale lost all but one
of its key players from last
year’s state runner-up, but are
beginning to find them-
selves,” DeCorsey said. “It’s
a tough place to play. They
have a player, Chase Knicker-
bocker, who is big and rangy
and can shoot the lights out.
He’s got a basketball name
and he is a basketball player.”
Following this week’s two-
game road swing, GSL will
play its next three contests at
home, beginning Jan. 20
against Holy Family. Starting
with that matchup, eight of
the Panthers’ final 12 regular-
season games will be at
home.

It was a week with a little
bit of everything for the
Glencoe-Silver Lake/Lester
Prairie wrestling team.
The Panthers competed in a
Wright County Conference
dual meet with New London-
Spicer on Tuesday, Jan. 6 that
featured only seven matches
due to illness and injuries in
the GSL/LP lineup.
Tanner Chmielewski,
Michael Meyer, Cody Rae,
Aaron Donnay, Dalton
Kosek, Dylan Melchert,
Brandon Hernandez, Nick
Brelje and Christopher
Lemke were all missing from
GSL/LP’s potential Jan. 6
lineup as the depleted Pan-
thers fell 64-16 to the Wild-
cats in a meet that lasted just
40 minutes.
NLS won four of the seven
contested matches by a score
differential of 22-16. Picking
up wins for GSL/LP were
Brandon Richter at 145
pounds by fall in 33 seconds,
Nate Tesch by fall at 152 in 1
minute, 24 seconds and Tris-
tan Weber at 195 by a 16-3
major decision.
A scheduled appearance in
a triangular meet at Rogers
on Jan. 8 was cancelled due
to the inclement weather and
will not be made up.
However, the Panthers
closed out the week with a
solid performance in an indi-
vidual tournament at Min-
netonka High School Jan. 9.
Following its cancelled ap-
pearance at Rogers, GSL/LP
competed for the first time in
the Minnetonka Individual
Tournament, finishing second
to the hosts at the eight-team
competition.
The Skippers, who filled all
14 weight classes, finished
with 240 points to 186.5 for
the Panthers. Benilde-St.
Margaret's finished third with
134 points.
Donnay, Richter, Brelje and
Peyton Sell all took top hon-
ors in their respective weight
classes. Tesch and Tristan
Weber finished second, while
Kosek and Tyler Hausladen
came in third. Lemke and
Sergio Mireles took fourth,
with Kole Polzin and Rae
claiming fifth and sixth, re-
spectively.
Donnay, ranked 10th in
Class AA at 138 as of the
start of the week, was the first
champion of the night for
GSL/LP at Minnetonka. He
won his first match by fall
and then won his semifinal
match 12-3 after a seven-
point third period. In claim-
ing the tourney title for his
weight class, he rallied from
an 8-4 third-period deficit

Tyler Hausladen is in firm control of his third-place match at 120
pounds during the Minnetonka Tournament on Friday, Jan. 9.
Hausladen went 2-1 at the tournament, with his only loss coming to
the weight class’ eventual champion. He entered this week with
eight wins on the season. Glencoe-Silver Lake finished second to
the host Skippers at the eight-team competition.

A spread of just over two
points kept the Glencoe-Sil-
ver Lake gymnastics team
from a dual meet win over St.
Peter on Tuesday, Jan. 6. The
Saints pulled out the win with
120.775 points to the Pan-
thers’ 118.75.
“This was our first meet
coming back from the Christ-
mas break,” coach Kim Hahn
said. “We had worked on
adding in some new skills as
well as nursing any injuries
we had from before break.
The girls performed really
well.”
GSL’s Ashley Petersen
topped the all-around scores
with a cumulative 32.8, but
the next four all-around spots
were captured by St. Peter
athletes.
Other Panthers who topped
20 points in all-around were
Gia Venier with 28.675; Alex-
is Bergstrom, 25.55; and Nic-
hole Bender, 22.65.
“We had some great rou-
tines and you could tell the
girls were having a good
time,” Hahn said. “We scored
a little lower than what we
had been with a 118. We were
averaging 120-121 points.”
Petersen placed first in
three events — vault (9.3),
beam (8.0) and floor (8.825).
She was third on the uneven
parallel bars (6.675).
Venier placed second on
the bars (6.775) and was
fourth in the vault (8.45). She
placed fifth in floor (7.9).
Binder captured third place
in the vault for the Panthers
with a score of 8.5.
Mother Nature forced the
cancellation of a Thursday
meet against Dassel-Cokato.
However, the “Tropical
Twist” invitational meet at
Big Lake went off as planned
on Saturday.
GSL was without the serv-
ices of Petersen, who is nurs-
ing an ankle injury, at the
meet.
Without Petersen, the Pan-
thers took seventh at Big
Lake, posting a score of
116. 65. Hahn praised her
team’s effort, pointing out a
strong day on bars.
“This was a varsity invite
and all the girls did great,“
she said. “We consistently
scored in the 6’s on bars,
which typically is a not
strong event for us.”
Binder led the way on bars
with a 6.8. Finishing close
behind were Venier at 6.75,
Bergstrom at 6.7, Samantha
Cotner at 6.6 and Shawna
Goettl at 6.1.
In the all-around, Binder
(30.55) and Venier (30.35)
finished 14th and 15th, re-
spectively. The two finished
close to each other in events
throughout the meet.
Binder took seventh on
vault with an 8.45 while Ve-
nier placed eighth at 8.4. Ve-
nier placed 13th on beam
with an 8.0 to Binder’s 22nd-
place tally of 7.3. On floor,
Binder scored an 8.0 to finish
13th and Venier was 28th
with a score of 7.2.
GSL traveled to Wright
County Conference foe Wa-
conia for a dual meet on
Tuesday. Petersen was also
expected to miss the competi-
tion due to the ailing ankle.
The Panthers are scheduled
to return home on Friday for
a triangular meet against De-
lano and Watertown-
Mayer/Mound-Westonka be-
fore hosting a five-team invi-
tational competition on Satur-
day.

The Glencoe Silver-Lake
girls’ basketball team contin-
ued to find success against
Section 2AA North rivals last
week, besting Sibley East 55-
41 at home on Tuesday, Jan.
6.
The victory, which preced-
ed a weeklong break, gave
the Panthers a 4-1 mark in
contests against prospective
section tournament rivals.
“This game was by far the
most active we have been on
defense,” coach Zach Otto-
Fisher said. “It felt like we
tipped over half [of Sibley
East’s] passes. [Guard Maddy
Kalenberg] got all the girls
playing sound defense.”
Despite sinking just one of
its first 14 shots in the game,
GSL proved to be inhos-
pitable hosts for the visiting
Wolverines. Yet, the Panthers
recovered from their early
shooting woes to stake them-
selves to a 25-14 halftime
lead.
“We did hit a few shots
prior to half, and that really
got the momentum going,”
Otto-Fisher said. “At halftime
we talked about coming out
strong and not giving up the
lead, but to build off it. That
has been a struggle of ours all
season so far.”
Guard Maddie Monahan
sank a three-pointer to begin
the second half as the hosts
built their lead to 23 points
before easing off the gas
pedal. Otto-Fisher was able to
tap into his reserves and find
playing time for the entire
varsity team as GSL cruised
to the 14-point win.
“Getting all the players into
this game was something that
was very important to our
girls and us coaches,” Otto-
Fisher said. “It was nice to
see all 11 girls get some ac-
tion. All the girls did a nice
job with their minutes and
contributed to the team win.”
Monahan led the way with
a game-high 20 points, nine
assists and seven steals for
GSL, while backcourt mate
Mac Monahan recorded 12
points on 3-of-4 shooting
from beyond the arc. Kalen-
berg notched 10 points with a
team-best nine rebounds to
highlight her exceptional play
on the night.
“Maddy was unreal on
Tuesday. She was diving
after loose balls, rebounding,
getting tips, hitting shots and
was everywhere,” Otto-Fisher
said. “She really stepped up
as a captain in this game and
continued to play at a high
level. That energy carried
over to the rest of the team.”
The win upped the team’s
overall record to 9-4 on the
season.
GSL traveled to south Min-
neapolis Tuesday night for a
non-conference matchup
against Minnehaha Academy.
The Redhawks, who ad-
vanced to last year’s state
Class AA tournament, entered
the contest with a 7-2 record
on the strength of a four-
game winning streak.
The Panthers commence
Wright County Conference
western division play on Fri-
day, when they host Annan-
dale.
Following that contest,
GSL then will have another
elongated break of seven days
before returning to confer-
ence divisional play at
Mound-Westonka on Friday,
Jan. 23.

third title at Minnetonka by
rolling through 182 with a pin
and a 17-0 technical fall be-
fore defeating the Skippers'
Pierce Breedlove 7-1 in the
championship match to im-
prove to 17-5 this season.
Not to be outdone, Sell
earned his inaugural varsity
individual meet title by win-
ning both of his matches at
Minnetonka. After drawing a
quarterfinal bye, he fought
back from a 5-2 deficit early
in his semifinal match to win
by fall at 2:43 of the second
period. That win set up a title
match against BSM's Austin
Robertson, which was narrow-
ly won by Sell, 3-2. That vic-
tory improved the sopho-
more's record to 16-9 this sea-
son with 10 pins.
Tesch advanced to the finals
at 152 via two quick falls, but
could not get past Minneton-
ka's Gray Liedtke, losing 9-1
to take a runner-up finish. He
enters this week with a 13-2
record and 10 pins.
Weber also finished second
at 195 by winning two
thrilling matches before com-
ing up on the short end of an
11-3 decision against an old
nemesis in Orono's Jackson
Striggow. Weber is now 19-4
this season, with two of those
losses coming against Strig-
gow.
Hausladen went 2-1 on the
day to take third at 120, sand-
wiching a semifinal loss to
eventual champion Jon
Schmid of Orono with a pair
of wins to bring his season
record to 8-10. Kosek lost a
heartbreaking semifinal
match, 9-7 in overtime, to
Minneapolis Washburn's Mar-
cus Placide, but won both his
first and final matches and
brought a 12-10 record into
this week.

Albert Krueger, son of Mr.
and Mrs. William Krueger, was
taken with an attack of more
than ordinary sickness Saturday
shortly after noon, and relieved
of his stomach 14 frogs, 10 of
which were alive and four of
which were dead. Albert claims
he has not felt well since the fall
of 1913, and has at various times
been examined by physicians,
but the nature of his ailment was
never disclosed. Although weak-
ened from his nauseating ordeal,
he was able to drive into town
Friday and consulted with Dr.
O.F. Johnson, who thinks Albert
may have drank some water that
contained frog eggs and ad-
vances this as his only theory as
to how the frogs got into Albert’s
stomach, and he is at a loss as to
how they could possibly live
under such conditions. Dr. John-
son has two of the frogs on dis-
play in his office; they average
about an inch long each.

The Commercial Hotel came
very near to having a fire Tues-
day morning about 6 o’clock,
when an unusually hot fire in the
stove caused the stove pipe to
overheat, and smoke was soon
seen coming through the floor on
the second story. A quiet alarm
was passed among the sleeping
guests, who lost no time in piling
out. A number of floor boards
were pulled up, and the fire was
found and easily put out with a
few buckets of water.

they were putting in a stock of

Joe Gehlen suffered a painful
injury to his left hand New
Year’s Day as he was about to
leave with his pickup to load a
fish house. Joe, accompanied by
Mark and Jim, was pulling out
of the driveway at the mill, and
he was backing up, holding the
truck door open with his left
hand and looking backward. The
door of the mill swung in slight-
ly and caught his hand between
it and the truck door. The hand
was badly lacerated and Joe at
first was unable to release his
hand, so he had to shift, go for-
ward until the hand was released
and then leave. A tourniquet was
applied. Glen Wraspir rushed
him to the Glencoe hospital for
emergency treatment; Jack Hem-
brecht in the meantime had
phoned that hospital, so a doctor
would be on hand at his arrival.
Quite a number of stitches were
taken, but no bones were broken.

The challenges of being a par-
ent! Attempts to instill discipline
often backfire. Anger can hang
like a cloud over a family where
children fail to show respect to
their parents. How to teach “re-
sponsibility” is a constant task.
Communication between chil-
dren and parents is often
strained. Many children show
signs of low self-esteem.
Parents who want to gain
skills for effective parenting are
invited to attend a six week
course to be held at the Czech
Brethren Presbyterian Church in
Silver Lake. The course is a
combination of video presenta-
tions and discussion. Under the
leadership of pastor, the Rev.
Glen W. Bays, you’ll review
proven parenting principles. This
course, called, “Active Parent-
ing” has been used in thousands
of settings. Many church groups
have found it to be helpful in re-
awakening family life. The first
meeting will be Wednesday, Jan.
17, from 7 to 9 p.m., at the
church.

Starting in 1867, church
masses in this area were held
in people’s houses. In 1873
St. Mary’s Bear Creek
Church of the Assumption
Catholic Church was built
five miles south of Silver
Lake. Masses were celebrated
by various visiting priests
until 1930, when the congre-
gation joined St. Joseph’s
Church in Silver Lake.
One beautiful, quiet, sunny,
warm evening on Aug. 15 a
few years ago, we attended
an outdoor Mass on the The
Feast of the Assumption of
The Blessed Virgin Mary at
the Bear Creek Church of the
Assumption Cemetery. Alice
Nowak led us in song with
her accordion as our voices
of “Sing of Mary” echoed up
and down the Bear Creek
Valley between dark green
rolling fields of corn and soy-
beans. Sing this catchy hymn
once and you will hum it all
day. “Sing of Mary, pure and
lowly, Virgin Mother unde-
filed. Sing of God’s own Son
most holy, Who became her
little Child.”
We could see the Penas,
Popelka, Urban, Anderle,
Chacka, Wosmek, Pulkrabek
and many other farms and
think about our brave ances-
tors who left the Czech Lands
150 years ago. Most of them
fulfilled their dreams of
Utopia with very, very hard
work, sweat and toil and built
and improved their farms
with great pride and success
and are now resting peaceful-
ly under the green sod. Many
times their dreams were met
with hardships, bank failures,
depressions, drought, poor
prices, wars, tragedies, deaths
and, occasionally, laughter.
In 1919, Agnes (Anderle)
Urban’s young, healthy hus-
band, Frank Urban, farming
east of Silver Lake, suddenly
died from the 1919 influenza
flu epidemic. It took millions
of people worldwide; young,
old, weak and strong, at ran-
dom.
One wonders how the
parishioners, so many years
ago, generated enough money
to build the gigantic 4-foot by
6-foot concrete outdoor altar
with the huge statues of Mary
and St. Joseph, with Jesus on
the 15-foot high cross at the
Church of the Assumption
Cemetery. Many of our an-
cestors were baptized, made
their first Holy Communion,
were confirmed, married and
are buried here.
In 2003, Anna Pokorny and
Father Bob Mraz placed a
beautiful 4-foot by 5-foot by
10-inches thick granite me-
morial at the edge of the
cemetery. A picture of the
church and history are em-
bossed on the stone with
Czech words translated into
English.
Gone are the echoes of,
“Come Boss, Come Boss,”
with cows quietly munching
grass as they look up but then
continue eating in the far cor-
ner of the pasture until some
kid has to chase them home.
Gone are the barbed wire
fences with the barbed wire
gates with loops over a post
for latching. Gone is the
silent creaking of horses
pulling into harness with only
the dull thud of each hoof as
they rolled over a 14-inch
strip of sweet-smelling soil.
Gone is the farmer quietly
sitting on his sulky plow in
bib overalls with a large sun-
faded, sweat-soaked “X” on
the back of his blue denim
work shirt. His torn straw hat
and head is hanging down as
he rides slowly across the
field; he is almost sleeping, it
is so quiet. All of a sudden,
off in the distance, one-half
mile across the field, down
the hill, over the creek, up the
hill, through the pasture and
up onto the farm yard, he
hears Josefka Anderle ring
the huge outdoor farm dinner
bell. Josef straightens up; the
horses instantly pick up speed
and head for the end of the
field and home because they
know they will get a rest,
drink gallons of fresh water
and have a treat of oats. We
have the huge dinner bell.
You are welcome to ring it.
Now many of the nice farm
building sites are buried or
overgrown with weeds. Barns
are gone or in poor repair and
fences torn down. Gone are
the hopes and dreams of
thousands of farm families all
with miniature farm factories
hauling farm items to town
and bringing back farm sup-
plies. They occasionally
stopped at one of the many
bars for a well-deserved 5-
cent (pivo) beer; one foot
resting on the foot railing, el-
bows on the bar, talking to
the bartender or another
farmer who periodically spit
a bit of Black Rose tobacco
juice into the nicely groomed
green granules under the rail-
ing.
Farmers spent many years
improving their farming op-
eration. When they finally
had everything like they
wanted it, they moved to
town; the new owner bull-
dozed it down and planted
corn over the top.
We should be so thankful
our relatives took a big
chance on coming to the free-
dom of America. Imagine
what your life would have
been if they had stayed in Old
Country with wars and Com-
munism. “Odpocinute v
pokoji” (May they rest in
peace).

Pastor’s Corner
The more you give, the more you have
B
ooker T. Washington remarked incisively in the book Up From Slavery that “Those who are happiest are
those who do the most for others.” It is a wonderful fact of life and of human nature that we are designed to
get pleasure from giving to others. The flip side of this is that we are usually at our lowest and most anx-
ious when we are focused only on our own selfish interests. There is no end to the ways that we can give of our-
selves. Kind words and good deeds should always start at home and go with us into our schools, workplaces and of
course into the marketplace. Good deeds can be done domestically or abroad, and we need not limit our good works
to helping our fellow humans, but can also be kind and giving to all of God’s creation. Pain and suffering are not
uniquely human capacities; our animal brethren share this capacity too, and we might even think of the earth as
something that can suffer under the weight of our burden. So we should give of ourselves generously whenever we
can. We will reap great benefits in the form of a much happier mind and spirit and we will be storing up treasures in
heaven.
“Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap
generously.” – 2 Corinthians 9:6

RESOLUTION NO. (2014-43)
AUTHORIZATION TO EXE-
CUTE MINNESOTA DEPART-
MENT OF TRANSPORTATION
GRANT AGREEMENT FOR AIR-
PORT IMPROVEMENT EXCLUD-
ING LAND ACQUISITION
It is resolved by the City of Glen-
coe as follows:
That the state of Minnesota Agree-
ment No. 07234, “Grant Agreement
for Airport Improvement Excluding
Land Acquisition,” for State Project
No. A4301-30 at the Glencoe Munic-
ipal Airport is accepted.
The Mayor and City Administrator
are authorized to execute this Agree-
ment and any amendments on behalf
of the City of Glencoe.
Councilor Adamietz seconded.
Upon a roll call vote all members
voted in favor. Whereupon said reso-
lution was adopted and approved.
City Administrator Mark Larson
provided information on the property
located at 1218 Greeley Avenue
North owned by Denny Wendlandt.
The City has condemned the property
due to deterioration. The owner has
voluntarily agreed to vacate the prop-
erty by December 31
st
. Rental units
must vacate also. One unit will va-
cate January 15
th
, 2015.
Bids for demolition have been ob-
tained in the amount of approximate-
ly $21,000. An estimate for environ-
mental testing from International Hy-
giene Services came in at approxi-
mately $3900. Another $6,000 is
being budgeted for environmental
abatement for asbestos removal.
Discussion will be held regarding
how to proceed. The owner under-
stands that there is no value in the
building and he would not profit
from the sale of the land. He has al-
lowed the building to deteriorate and
should have some liability in the
demolition.
EDC can also discuss further – is
there a possibility of demolition/re-
development loan.
Public Works Director Schreifels
presented the Amendment to Struc-
ture Lease Agreement allowing
AT&T to place six additional antenna
on the South Water Tower. Increase
in rent for the additional antenna is
$2,100 per month.
Rent monies are used for mainte-
nance on all water towers.
Discussion led to Member Per-
schau motioning approval of the Sec-
ond Amendment to Structure Lease
Agreement of AT&T. Member Dietz
seconded the motion with all mem-
bers voting in favor.
Public Works Director Drew and
Veteran’s Memorial Committee
member James Peters presented the
request of the committee to place
Veteran’s Memorial in one location at
the current Welcome Park. The can-
non and memorial at Oak Leaf Park
would be moved to this location also.
It has been discussed to rename Wel-
come Park to Veteran’s Memorial
Park. Park Board members and Vet-
eran’s Committee members are in
favor of this location and the renam-
ing of the park.
Discussion led to Member Per-
schau motioning to move ahead with
this project and have the committee
prepare design work and present at
later date for approval of their layout
plan for the park. Councilor Ziemer
seconded the motion. All members
voted in favor.
City Administrator Mark Larson
presented the requests of the Police
Union for their contract renewal.
They are requesting a 3% wage in-
crease and one hour show up time for
times when officers are called in, for
example, a 15 minute training event.
Council members found no prob-
lem with the contract changes as re-
quested.
Councilor Schrupp motioned ap-
proval of the 3% wage increase and
the one hour show up time. Coun-
cilor Dietz seconded the motion with
all members voting in favor.
Councilor Perschau motioned ap-
proval to pay the city bills with
Councilor Ziemer seconding the mo-
tion. All members voted in favor.
Councilor Ziemer motioned to ad-
journ the meeting with Member
Adamietz seconding the motion. All
members voted in favor. Meeting ad-
journed at approximately 7:30 p.m.
The above minutes are the official
actions taken by the City Council.
The complete minutes are on file and
available for review in the office of
the City Administrator.
