For the first time since Kelly
Arnold and Kayla Boesche did
it in 2012, Glencoe-Silver Lake
tennis has a doubles team in the
state tournament, after seniors
Piper Davis and Rachel Rusten
ran through the competition in
Section 5A.
It began Thursday in Glen-
coe, as they earned the No. 2
seed despite playing only once
together as a tandem all season.
That outing resulted in a first-
place performance at the Brain-
erd invitational, and the girls
didn’t disappoint Thursday, de-
feating Belgrade-Brooten-El-
rosa’s Katie Boie and Sierra
Wohlman without dropping a
set, 6-0 and 6-0.
Providence Academy’s Eve-
line Kennedy and Grace Cum-
mins got on the board against
the Panthers, but still lost 6-3
and 6-2 as Davis and Rusten
moved on to Monday at St.
John’s University.
The two ran into conference
foes Lisa Neumann and Casey
Mikel from Annandale at St.
Johns, and bested the Cardinals
6-2 and 6-1 before Litchfield’s
Kalley Spreiter and Kennedy
Sommerfield secured their
place at state by way of a 6-4
first set and a 6-1 second set.
Since Neumann and Mikel
then lost to Katie and Libby
Moakley from Holy Family
Catholic, a true-second place
match ensued between the Pan-
thers and the Moakley sisters.
Davis and Rusten dropped
the first set, but bounced back
and claimed the next two 6-2
and 6-3, punching their ticket to
state, which was a preseason
goal.
Entering into Monday, Davis
said they just need to “come
ready to go, confident and re-
laxed.” She also kept with the
team motto and said, “We need
to be one ball better.”
Thursday in Glencoe, they
both divulged their four steps –
or phrases – of success.
“Breathe,” Rusten said.
“Keep it in,” Davis followed.
“Don’t feed the animal,”
Rusten quipped. “Solid,” Davis
closed. It’s a mantra the two
started between points back at
Brainerd, and seems to be
working. It’ll be tested once
again against the state’s best
rackets in Class A, starting at
10 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 23,
at the Reed-Sweatt Family Ten-
nis Center in Minneapolis.
While Rusten and Davis
have advanced to state, no
other Panthers made it out of
their first bracket Thursday in
Glencoe.
Ashlyn Ratike and Emily
VonBerge faced some tough
seedings, as they were marked
No. 16 and No. 15.
Ratike drew the section’s
best singles player, Holy Fami-
ly Catholic’s Danielle Gannon,
who bested Ratike 6-0 in both
sets.
VonBerge drew another com-
petitor from Holy Family in
No. 2 seed Grace Sperr.
Though, VonBerge managed to
claim at least one set in the sec-
ond, but still fell 6-0 and 6-1.
Ellie Lepel and Callie
Raduenz also navigated the
doubles’ bracket as the No. 5
seed, and had what seemed to
be a favorable match up on
paper against No. 12 seeded
Samantha Russel and Cameron
Neeson from Providence Acad-
emy.
But that notion quickly
faded, as Lepel and Raduenz
lost the first set 7-6, and even-
tually fell 6-4, ending their run.

The Glencoe-Silver Lake boys’ cross country team
produced a historic performance Thursday at the
Wright County Conference, West Division champi-
onships in Glencoe. All seven participants earned all-
conference honors by placing in the top nine. To top
it off, GSL’s top five were perfect, placing one
through five, as the team posted an absurd 15 points.

School history may very
well have been made Thursday
at the Wright County Confer-
ence cross country champi-
onships in Glencoe, when the
Panther boys had a perfect fin-
ish – placing its top five run-
ners in the top five spots.
What’s even more impres-
sive, all of Glencoe-Silver
Lake’s seven boys’ participants
earned all-conference by plac-
ing inside the top nine, as GSL
took the West Division of the
WCC with 15 team points.
“That just doesn’t happen,”
said boys’ Head Coach Jeff
Delwiche. “Doing it at home in
front of your home crowd. It’s
your course, and a nice day – it
doesn’t get any better than
that.”
As far as he could recollect,
no team in the history of GSL’s
cross country program – girls
or boys – has ever taken all
five of the top spots at a confer-
ence meet.
Jac Chelman claimed first
place and the title of confer-
ence champion after laying
back in second place behind
Isiah Herout for most of the
race. About halfway through,
Chelman turned it on and never
looked back, despite forgetting
to wear his running spikes, and
finished in 16:25, with Herout
on his heels at 16:41.
Brandon Richter was 10 sec-
onds behind Herout in third
with 16:51, battling it out with
sophomore Austin Schroepfer,
whose time of 16:53 earned
him fourth.
Garret Ardolf rounded out
that record-setting top five with
16:54, securing their names in
the school’s history books.
The secret, according to Del-
wiche and his runners, is the
chemistry between them.
“We’ve bonded as a team.
We’re finally close,” Chelman
said of what’s led to the team’s
success this year. “None of us
ever thought we’d be like this.”
“We had our goals set last
year in track, that we’re going
to try and win state in cross
country,” Ardolf said. “And
now it’s becoming a reality.”
Almost every runner had
their best race of the season at
the championships, including
Garrett Ober, who had only
participated in two events pre-
viously due to an injury.
At Glencoe, Ober finished
eighth, but nearly went under
17 minutes with his time of
17:01, which was only four
seconds better than his fellow

Only one game remains after
the Panther football team con-
tinued to build on its character
Friday night, improving to 4-3
after beating the Dassel-Cokato
Chargers 29-20, despite trailing
14-0 in the second quarter.
Last year, Glencoe-Silver
Lake beat up on a young DC
team in a 49-19 routing that
closed out the regular season.
But Friday in Cokato, it be-
came apparent early on that the
2014 Chargers had improved,
and Head Coach Scott Tschim-
perle said it was a “game that
was going to define what kind
of team we have,” with the
playoffs soon approaching.
“They’re (the Chargers) a
good football team. They’re al-
ways sound defensively, and
we wanted to see where we’re
at,” Tschimperle said. “We
liked what we saw, but there
are still some things we’ve got
to fix. There are a lot of little
things that, in the long run,
could mean the difference be-
tween a touchdown and a five-
yard loss.”
Defensively, GSL was rather
sound, as it held DC under 200
yards of offense with 196, de-
spite the early scores in the first
half of the game. Pressure up
front from Zach Jungclaus and
Jacob Popelka forced DC quar-
terback Mitch Fiecke to scram-
ble and tipped his passes, be-
fore Mason Goettl sealed the
victory with a fourth-quarter in-
terception.
“That meant everything to
me,” Goettl said. “I’ve been
playing for two years, haven’t
gotten one yet. I’ve been wait-
ing and waiting, and it finally
came, and it couldn’t have been
at a more perfect time.”
The Panther offense took a
quarter to get operational, and
blundered on its opening drive
as Bennett Bielke fumbled on
third and seven after catching a
seven-yard pass from Keaton
Anderson. Instead of a first
down, DC’s Matthew Dahlseng
returned the ball to the GSL 30-
yard line, putting the Charger
offense in prime position just a

With Thursday’s three-set tri-
umph against fellow member
of the Wright County Confer-
ence’s West Division Mound
Westonka, Glencoe-Silver
Lake’s volleyball team is on a
four-game win streak heading
into the Rochester Exchange
Club’s fall invitational.
The Lady Panthers have pol-
ished themselves over the sec-
ond half of the season, and it
showed Thursday night in
Glencoe, taking set one 25-17
before drubbing the White
Hawks 25-12 in the following
frame. GSL closed out the
game with a 25-15 third set.
The Panther defense once
again displayed the type of per-
formance that has yielded a 17-
8 record, and the possibility of
securing a fourth seed in the
north subsection of Section
2AA, as diving bodies master-
fully collected the ball and tran-
sitioned into offense.
Lexi Kerslake, Taylor
Novak, Cortney Konen and
Emily Muetzel each finished
the contest with double-digit
digs, as GSL compiled 68 on
the evening.
Konen’s 18 led the team,
with Novak trailing by only
four at 14. Muetzel finished
with 12, while Kerslake hit 10.
When GSL got the ball, set-
ter Layne Herrmann distributed
it nicely with 22 set assists,
while Konen hit five aces on 12
service attempts.
A strong defensive presence
at the net has developed as
well, with the Panthers racking
up 15 blocks in the past two
games, despite not possessing a
player listed at 5’10” or taller.
“Murf (Head Coach Lori
Schwirtz) has been having us
do a lot of plyos (plyometric
workouts) before practice so
we’re getting more in shape,
and our verticals are higher,”
Kerslake reasoned as to why
the Lady Panthers have had
greater success at the net. “We
like working hard for Murf, and
we’ll do what it takes.”
The last time GSL fell was
Sept. 25, when it suffered a 3-1
loss to the New London-Spicer
Wildcats, who are currently
ranked 16th in Class AA. Previ-
ous to that, Sibley East was the
only team to truly have GSL’s
number, as it defeated the Pan-
thers in seven out of nine sets in
a five-day span back in Sep-
tember.
If the Lady Panthers continue
to play well and win their regu-
lar-season finale at Litchfield
on Oct. 21, a rematch with the
Holy Family Catholic Fire may
take place in the opening round
of the playoffs.
Currently, GSL is in fourth
place in Section 2AA, with
Holy Family one spot down.
The Fire took all three sets –
25-20, 25-23 and 25-16 – back
on Sept. 9 in Glencoe.
teammate Michael Schaefer,
who placed ninth with 17:05 as
the team’s final set of legs.
The key to those times were
an aggressive and fast start,
which the Panthers said they
needed to experience with state
on the horizon.
“It’s nice, because state’s
going to be like this,” Richter
said. “For the first mile every-
body goes out really fast, so we
had to get used to it.”
The team’s final regular-sea-
son meet was at Watertown-
Mayer on Tuesday, Oct. 14.
GSL now prepares for the Sec-
tion 5A championship at Mila-
ca on Oct. 23, where their
nemesis, the Mora Mustangs,
await.
Luckily, Delwiche said it’s
mostly maintenance from here
on out, and keeping the kids re-
laxed and healthy.
“I don’t think they have any-
thing to work on other than re-
laxing,” said Delwiche. “I’m
seeing them get a little tighter
as these races get more impor-
tant. They just need to keep
having fun and stay relaxed …
Their training is right on time.”
Girls
With the toughest runners in
the Wright County Confer-
ence’s West Division present
Thursday, the Panther girls’
cross country team managed
fifth place out of sixth teams,
but eighth-grader Annamaria
Falcon took home honorable
mention honors with her 14th-
place time of 16:40.
While GSL accrued 121 team
points, Falcon’s finish gave
Head Coach Jann Savre and the
rest of the team something to be
proud of at the tail end of a
tough season.
Annandale took home the
conference championship with
22 team points, placing its top
five runners in the top 10.
Gia Venier just missed the
cut for honorable mention in
19th place with a time of 17:08,
and four out of five scoring run-
ners improved their times by
over a minute from the last time
they raced the course at GSL
about a month ago. The produc-
tion at the conference champi-
onships has Savre’s runners
ready for the Section 5A meet
at Milaca on Thursday, Oct. 23.
“The girls felt good about
their race,” Savre said, “which
gives them a bit more confi-
dence leading into sections.”
minute and a half into the game.
On the fourth offensive play
of their second series, Fiecke hit
a wide open David Raisanen on
a play-action pass for a 37-yard
touchdown from an illegal for-
mation the referees never called.
The result was a six-point lead
after the extra point sailed west
of the goal posts.
Things didn’t go any
smoother on GSL’s second of-
fensive drive, which produced
only two yards before Tanner
Grack shanked a 25-yard punt
that started the Chargers at the
Panther 41. It took only eight
plays before Nate Nelson
punched it in from five yards
out for a 14-0 lead just minutes
into the second quarter.
But the Panthers roused to life
late in the first half when Ander-
son scored untouched from 26
yards out on a midline option.
With the Chargers on their
heels, Anderson pulled the ball
from fullback Tyler Chap and
broke through the line to find no
one lurking in the Charger back-
field, as the Panthers trailed 14-
7 with 4:17 remaining in the
second quarter.
It only took one play for GSL
to cut the lead to 14-13 once it
got the ball back, as Anderson
completed a dart to Bielke on an
option pass from the shotgun
while rolling to his left. After
the completion, the shifty senior
cut inside only to turn it back
outside, somehow eluding six
defenders before trotting down
the Panther sideline for a 49-
yard score.
“I was a little too excited right
away to make a play and get
that first down,” Bielke admit-
ted. “It just came back to the ba-
sics on that touchdown – catch-
ing and locking the ball away,
and then making the play from
there.”
The momentum shifted com-
pletely in the third quarter when
the Panther defense answered its
head coach’s halftime challenge.
“We told them we’re going to
get a four and out to start the
second half,” Tschimperle re-
called. “Then we’re going to
kick them in the mouth and
drive it down the field.” And
that’s exactly what they did.
After forcing a four and out,
GSL put together a 12-play
drive that covered 58 yards, and
resulted in a two-yard touch-
down run up the middle by An-
derson to go up 21-14, as DC
left the inside gaps unmanned.
The Chargers matched with
their own 11-play drive, howev-
er, in the fourth quarter, but still
trailed 21-20 after Nelson
scored from five yards out.
That’s when GSL’s offense
put together a typical Panther
drive, going from its own 36
down to the DC 19 in 12 plays,
converting some key fourth
downs with more sneaks by An-
derson, before the quarterback
helped seal the game with a 19-
yard option run from the shot-
gun. Teddy Petersen put the nail
in the coffin on the two point
conversion, scoring on a jet
sweep also from the shotgun for
a 29-20 lead.
Fiecke was intercepted by
Goettl on fourth and nine at the
GSL 35 with 1:10 remaining on
the ensuing drive, prompting the
victory formation from the Pan-
thers.
GSL closes the chapter on the
regular season tonight (Wednes-
day) when the Annandale Cardi-
nals come to Glencoe for a 7
p.m., Wright County Confer-
ence finale.
A win tonight, and the Pan-
thers should lock up the No. 2
seed in Section 2AAA and re-
ceive a first-round bye. That
would pit GSL against the No. 3
or No. 6 seed, on Saturday, Oct.
25 in Glencoe.

Getting out of God’s way
“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to
do.” — Ephesians 2:10
T
he late writer Flannery O’Connor kept a devotional journal when she was in her twenties and a student at the
Iowa Writers’ Workshop. It has recently been published under the title A Prayer Journal. O’Connor was a fer-
vent Catholic and her journal is filled with interesting reflections on spirituality, as well as writing, which she
saw as a way to express her spirituality and hopefully lead others to God. She laments early on that “I do not know
you God because I am in the way. Please help me to push myself aside.” Throughout the journal we witness an
earnest young woman struggling heroically to be more pious, and striving to get out of God’s way, i.e., how to get rid
of the ego and let God fill up the space. Her simultaneous struggle to destroy the ego while seeking literary fame is
sometimes the focus of her reflections, as when she says “Don’t let me ever think, dear God, that I was anything but
the instrument for Your story, just like the typewriter was mine.” God desires to work through all of us, through our
words and our deeds, if we can only get our egos out of His way.

resolution. Upon a roll call vote all
members voted in favor. Whereupon
said resolution was adopted and ap-
proved.
Bids were opened on September
4
th
at 10:00 a.m. for the demolition of
the Economart building. Nine bids
were received with the low bid by
A.M.E. North Inc. (All Metro Exca-
vating, Inc. ) in the amount of
$
71,000. The low bid was reviewed
and it was recommended to award
the project to the lowest bidder – All
Metro Excavating Inc. The DEED
Demolition loan from the State of
Minnesota will pay for the demoli-
tion.
Councilor Dietz motioned to
award the demolition of the Econo-
mart building to the low bidder – All
Metro Excavating Inc. Councilor
Ziemer seconded the motion with all
members voting in favor.
Public Works Director Schreifels
presented quotes for installation of a
chain link fence on the top to the di-
gester wall. A fence is needed for fall
protection as the cover replacement
is too costly.
Councilor Adamietz motioned to
approve the low bid of Stormy Land-
scape and Fence of St. Cloud, Min-
nesota to construct a fence on top of
the digester wall at the WWTP.
Councilor Perschau seconded the
motion. All members voted in favor.
Public Works Director Schreifels
presented the cost estimate for brine
reuse system at the WTP of
$
44,000.
Brine will be used for ice melt in the
winter and dust control in the sum-
mer months.
Discussion led to Councilor
Adamietz motioning to move for-
ward with the project authorizing the
Public Works Director to obtain
quotes for the implementation of the
project by the next council meeting.
Councilor Ziemer seconded the mo-
tion with all members voting in
favor.
The Glencoe Lions Club requested
of the Glencoe City Council to pass a
resolution allowing an additional
gaming site within the City of Glen-
coe. It is the Club’s intent to initiate
and maintain the sale of pull tabs at
Main Street Sports Bar, 1226 Greeley
Avenue North.
Councilor Schrupp motioned ap-
proval with the following resolution:
RESOLUTION NO. (2014-36)
RESOLUTION ALLOWING
GLENCOE LIONS CLUB ADDI-
TIONAL GAMING SITE AT MAIN
STREET SPORTS BAR AND RE-
NEWAL IN DUBB’S GRILL &
BAR, PLA-MOR BALLROOM
AND GLENCOE COUNTRY CLUB
WHEREAS, MSA 349.213, states
that the local municipality must ap-
prove the premises permit of a chari-
table gambling organization’s renew-
al of said permit by the State Board:
and,
WHEREAS, the Glencoe Lion’s
Club has requested said approval of a
premises permit of the Glencoe City
Council for Dubb’s Grill & Bar, Pla-
Mor Ballroom, Glencoe Country

Street Sports Bar.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RE-
SOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL
OF THE CITY OF GLENCOE,
MINNESOTA;

proved with an effective date of Sep-
tember 15, 2014.
That said permit shall be for a two
(2) year period of time.
Councilor Dietz seconded the mo-
tion and upon a roll call vote all
members voted in favor. Whereupon
said resolution was adopted and ap-
proved.
Sump pump connection language
was added. Discussion led to second
reading tabled for language clarifica-
tion and change of sump pump con-
nection in Section 529.0008.
Councilor Adamietz then mo-
tioned to set the public hearing for
Ordinance 585 regarding construc-
tion site and post construction
stormwater management for October
20
th
at 7:30 p.m. Councilor Perschau
seconded the motion. All members
voted in favor.
The city administration and the
EDC recommended donating the
lone house in the Creekside subdivi-
sion to McLeod County Habitat for
Humanity. It is to be moved to anoth-
er location in the spring of 2015.
Creekside will be platted as industri-
al.
They would also like the city to
continue to heat the house this winter
with the expense to be reimbursed by
Habitat for Humanity. City Attorney
Jody Winters will work with admin-
istration on the donation paperwork.
Councilor Adamietz motioned for
the City of Glencoe to donate the
house in the Creekside subdivision to
McLeod County Habitat for Humani-
ty and to continue to heat through the
winter with Habitat for Humanity re-
imbursing the City for the expense of
heating the home. Councilor
Schrupp seconded the motion. All
members voted in favor.
The Finance Committee met this
past week to discuss further the 17
th
Street West driveway claims. After
extensive review and discussion it
was determined that no damage oc-
curred due to Contractor operations.
The Committee recommended deny-
ing driveway replacement.
Council further discussed and
Councilor Schrupp motioned to re-
place two panels of the Schutz drive-
way not to exceed
$
1,500. Contractor
to bill the city directly. Councilor
Perchau seconded the motion. All
members voted in favor.
Ryan Voss, property owner of 921
to 929 12
th
Street East requested he
remove the debris and create
drainage swale behind the properties.
Public Works Director Schreifels,
Council members and John Rodeberg
of SEH have met with Mr. Voss on
this request.
This is private property so sugges-
tions were made to work with
TC&W Rail Road and Sentence-to-
Serve to complete this work. Mayor
Wilson felt that the city should pro-
vide partial help with paying for the
project as it could possibly improve
stormwater management in the area.
Other councilors felt that as this is
private property we should not set a
precedent. Further argument led to
Councilor Adamietz motioning to
table the request. Councilor Schrupp
seconded the motion. All voted in
favor. City will help to facilitate a
meeting with Mr. Voss and TC&W
Rail Road to further review the re-
quest.

Record
County asks for help in identifying ditch damage
The Federal Emergency
Management Agency
(FEMA) is requiring McLeod
County to identify all county
ditch damage by Nov. 22 to
be eligible for repair reim-
bursement from the govern-
ment.
Repair funds will be 75
percent from FEMA and 25
percent from Minnesota.
The incident period that
may qualify for these repair
funds is June 11 through July
11, 2014.
Once an area is identified,
pictures, GPS points and map
locations need to be acquired
and available for FEMA. Any
areas that are not identified
before Nov. 22 will not be eli-
gible for repair funds from
the government agencies.
Please talk to your neigh-
bors or if you find any areas
on county ditches that were
damaged from the spring
rains, let County Environ-
mentalist Roger Berggren
know by calling 320-864-
1214 or by e-mail at roger.
