In a previous column, I
compared the 2004 Panther
football team I played on to
this year’s team.
I mentioned how our of-
fense had trouble keeping the
ball off the ground running
Scott Tschimperle’s option
game plan. But once the of-
fense got its bearings, it was
clear we were a force to be
reckoned with.
While most people would
agree our section opponents
were tougher than the current
residents of Section 2, there
remains a similarity: teams in
our section have historically
had near unblemished records
going into the post season, pri-
marily because of playing in
weaker conferences.
This may sound arrogant,
but if you look at the teams
GSL regularly plays in the
Wright County Conference,
there’s no denying that the
Panthers are battle tested
when it comes time for the
playoffs.
Like this year’s team, we
missed out on one of the top
two seeds and had to play a
Tuesday playoff game.
We ran through Waconia
29-14 before giving Jordan (6-
3) and LeSueur-Henderson
(10-0) a taste of what Wright
County football is like.
We were fortunate enough
to host the opening round of
the state tournament against
Plainview-Elgin-Millville
(PEM) and gave a dramatic
ending to the history of Allen
Field with a 35-28 nail-biter
before moving on to the
Metrodome — a place few of
us thought we’d get to.
We had a chip on our shoul-
der that formed in the regular
season, which we carried
through the playoffs.

O
ftentimes, coaches
want their players
toeing that fine line
between relaxation and com-
petitive excitement.
For Thursday’s Class A state
tennis meet, Head Coach Robb
DeCorsey said his doubles tan-
dem of Piper Davis and Rachel
Rusten needs to stay loose, and
treat it like any other competi-
tion.
“They’re good as long as
they’re not thinking about ten-
nis right now,” DeCorsey seri-
ously joked. “They can’t play
scared. It’s just like any other
match.”
When the rackets start
swinging Thursday morning at
the Reed-Sweat tennis center in
Minneapolis, Davis and Rusten
will have a tough task ahead of
them.
Cora Delich (10) and Kate-
lyn Rice (12) of Eveleth-
Gilbert are a formidable duo,
and will look to overwhelm the
two Panther seniors with their
strength.
“They’re very good,”
DeCorsey said. “They hit hard,
and they try to overpower you.”
Rice has been ranked in the
top 10 Class A individuals all
season, and is currently fifth.
The key to beating the two
Golden Bears from Eveleth-
Gilbert?
“They’ve got to go after
them,” DeCorsey said. “They
have to hit the ball, not play
soft and play with them.”
Since DeCorsey has been
coaching tennis at Glencoe-Sil-
ver Lake, every state entrant
has lost to the eventual state
champion, and usually in the
second round.
If the Panthers lose their first
match, they fall into the conso-
lation bracket with another loss
ending their run. Should they
beat Rice and Delich in the
opening round, any ensuing
loss would also be the end of
the line.
Davis and Rusten set a goal
to make it this far at the begin-
ning of the season, and accom-
plishing that feat is something
DeCorsey said they should be
proud of.
“They’re in the state tourney,
and that’s huge,” he said.
“They’ve set new goals, and
now they want to advance to
the next day. They’ve just got
to relax, and play.”
Their match starts at 10 a.m,;
their second contest is at 2 p.m.
at the same site regardless of
the outcome.

Teddy Petersen (9) put forth his best offensive and defen-
sive performance of the season in the 46-14 dismantling
of Annandale in Glencoe on Wednesday, Oct. 15. The jun-
ior tailback/safety finished with 145 yards rushing and
three touchdowns on 23 carries. He also had three inter-
ceptions and returned the first for a 35-yard touchdown.
Action is from the second quarter, with Alex Romano (74)
and Tanner Grack (12) clearing space for Petersen.

tennis tournament for doubles. Head
Coach Robb DeCorsey (left) said the
key to his Panthers’ success at their

and play loose. The two will be tested
right away against Cora Delich and
Katelyn Rice of Eveleth-Gilbert starting
at 10 a.m. Thursday in Minneapolis.

The regular season closed
with a stellar performance by
the Panther football team, as
Glencoe-Silver Lake sent An-
nandale home with a 46-14 loss
on senior night to roll into the
playoffs on a four-game win-
ning streak.
From the get-go, the Cardi-
nals couldn’t win the battle at
the line of scrimmage, as was
evident by GSL’s 368 yards
gained on the ground to Annan-
dale’s mere 87.
The most impressive per-
formance of the evening came
from junior utility-man Teddy
Petersen, who not only rushed
for 145 yards and three touch-
downs on 23 carries, but also
intercepted three-first half pass-
es.
“I work hard at it,” Petersen
said of his abilities before hum-
bling himself. “I’m blessed, and
I just do (what I can) with what
I have.”
That may be the understate-
ment of the year, as Petersen
capped off GSL’s opening drive
with a 12-yard touchdown run
before returning his first of
three interceptions for a touch-
down on Annandale’s ensuing
drive, giving the Panthers a 14-
0 lead early on.
Petersen was helped out on
the play by edge-rushing senior
captain Zach Jungclaus, who
forced a high, wobbly throw
from Cardinal quarterback
Derek Tomberlin with some
heavy pressure all night.
The starting Panther defense
finished with three sacks total
and four first-half interceptions,
and didn’t allow a single point.
Nick Brelje had the other inter-
ception, while Petersen and
Nick Tabbert scored the remain-
ing sacks.
Annandale ran back Alexis
Salgado’s third kickoff at the
tail end of the first quarter fol-
lowing a 26-yard Panther-
touchdown pass from Keaton
Anderson to Bennett Bielke,
which left the score 21-6.
GSL took a 33-6 lead into the
half as Petersen closed out the
first two frames with his third
and final interception.
It didn’t take long for the
Panthers to improve upon that
gap with a pair of third-quarter
touchdowns by Petersen and
Bielke.
Petersen scored on the
ground from 15 yards, and
Bielke displayed some sharp
ball skills on a 39-yard touch-
down pass from Anderson, as
the senior plucked the ball away
from his defender for the score.
With 1:00 remaining in the
third and a 46-6 advantage, the
Panther reserves played the re-
mainder of the game.
The Panther offense has
steadily improved since Pe-
tersen and Bielke arrived in the
backfield, but most importantly,
the refurbished offensive line
has been sealing lanes and get-
ting downfield to spring the
speedy backs.

Taking third place at the
Rochester Exchange Club’s
fall invitational, the Lady
Panther volleyball team is
meticulously preparing for its
section rematch with Holy
Family Catholic on Thursday,
Oct. 23.
Glencoe-Silver Lake won
three out of its four mini
matches at the weekend tour-
nament, scoring wins over
Minneapolis Patrick Henry
(25-10, 25-13), Pine Island
(25-15, 21-25, 15-11) and
even Rochester Century (16-
25, 25-21, 15-12) from Class
AAA in the third-place match.
The lone loss came Satur-
day against Fillmore Central,
as the Panthers fell 25-21 and
25-13. That loss put the Lady
Panthers in the consolation
game against Rochester Cen-
tury, which claimed the open-
ing set 25-16.
GSL bounced right back
and took the second set 25-21
before narrowly escaping
with third place by way of a
15-12 final set.
Statistically, GSL’s best
match was against Pine Is-
land.

At the Section 5A cross
country meet in Milaca on
Thursday, the Panther boys’
cross country team will be
searching for its 10th first-place
finish of the season, while the
girls look to post their personal
bests.
Tuesday, Oct. 14, at the Wa-
tertown-Mayer invitational,
Jeff Delwiche’s boys took the
top spot for their fifth event in a
row with 27 team points.
Glencoe-Silver Lake’s girls’
team finished seventh out of
eight teams at the event in Wa-
tertown with 141 points.
Delwiche told his Panthers it
was OK to go for the win at
Watertown, but didn’t want
them overexerting themselves,
knowing what’s in store this
week.
“The times were definitely
slower than what we’d normal-
ly be running, but was exactly
what we wanted,” said Del-
wiche. “They wanted to win,
and we told them that was OK,
but we wanted them to take it
pretty easy.”
Even though they let off the
gas a bit, GSL had three boys

been a pivotal part of that
change by shifting down to
guard from his usual position at
tackle. The junior said he’s
grown quite fond of his position,
and that the rest of the line has
really come into its own as of
late.
“So far, I’m loving guard. It’s
fun to be able to pull around and
hit somebody,” Romano said. “I
think the rest of the line is work-
ing pretty well, too. (Matt)
Dahlke had to move to right
tackle and I think he’s doing a
good job there. (Matt) Dietl got
moved to left tackle and I think
he’s doing a good job, too.”
The biggest follies by GSL
came on special teams with the
kickoff returned for a touch-
down, and a botched snap on a
punt that gave the Cardinals the
ball at the Panther 27-yard line
that could have changed the
complexion of the game with
Annandale trailing 21-6.
GSL closes the regular season
with a 5-3 record, going 4-1 in
the Wright County Conference’s
West Division.
The Panthers now get to test
their mettle against the teams of
Section 2AAA, starting with the
3-5 Rockford Rockets, which
GSL hosted last night (Tuesday).
Earning the No. 3 seed, the
Panthers barely missed out on a
first-round bye, as Watertown-
Mayer edged GSL in QRF rank-
ings.
The winner of Tuesday’s
game in Glencoe moves on to
face the Royals in Watertown on
Saturday, Oct. 25. Whichever
team claims that contest ad-
vances to the section champi-
onship game at the high seed’s
location on Oct. 31.

that many of GSL’s runners
posted their best times of the
season.
Annamaria Falcon finished
inside the top 20, coming in at
14th place with a team-best time
of 16:49.
The rest of the Panthers’ scor-
ing runners finished in a tight
pack.
Gia Venier’s time of 17:55
was good for 31st place, while
Erica Hecksel completed the
course in 18:20 for 37th place.
Megan Siewert was one spot
down in 38th with 18:29, and
Marlaina Chelman posted a
time of 18:54, good enough for
41st place as GSL’s final scorer.
Tarin Michaelis and Taylor
Venier were 43rd and 44th with
times of 18:59 and 19:01.
The regular season is now
complete, and Thursday’s con-
test will decide individual and
team participants for the Class
A state cross country meet at
Northfield’s St. Olaf College on
Nov. 1.
hitter Lexi Kerslake exploded
with 27 digs and eight kills
against what Head Coach Lori
Schwirtz said is a good block-
ing team. Kerslake totaled 60
digs and 16 kills over four
games.
Libero Cortney Konen
amassed 17 digs of her own
against Pine Island, while Tay-
lor Novak had 14 digs and five
kills. Novak had 52 digs and
13 kills total, while Konen ac-
crued 45 digs.
Erika Ribar continued to pa-
trol the center of the net for
GSL, and totaled three blocks
and 16 digs.
Maddy Kalenberg had 10
kills and 18 digs, while Emily
Muetzel turned in 17 digs.
Layne Herrmann controlled
the offense quite well from her
setter position, and finished
with 47 set assists on the
weekend.
All-in-all, Schwirtz was
happy with her team’s per-
formance, as it eclipsed 20
wins for the first time since the
2012 season.
“The girls are playing pretty
strong right now and really
going in the right direction,”
Schwirtz said. “The biggest
difference I see right now is
we have become physically
stronger the past several
matches, which is a good feel-
ing that we can put the ball
away!”
The Lady Panthers will need
to put its best performance of
the season on display Thursday
when Holy Family visits for
the opening round of the Sec-
tion 2AA playoffs.
Back on Sept. 9, the Fire
doled out a three-set loss to
GSL in just its fifth game of
the season.
Since then, the Lady Pan-
thers have gone 18-6, while
the Fire went 10-8, which led
to GSL stealing the No. 4 seed
from the No. 5 seeded Fire.
Schwirtz said she knows that
seeding arrangement won’t sit
well with the Fire, and antici-
pates a hard-fought playoff
contest.
“I think Holy Family will
have a chip on their shoulder
since we got the higher seed,”
admitted Schwirtz, “but it
should be a great match-up for
us, and we welcome the re-
match!”
The key to a Panther victory,
said Schwirtz, is to “play to
win,” but to “not play worried
about the outcome.”
GSL traveled to Litchfield
Tuesday night to cap off the
regular season against the
Dragons (14-12).
The outcome of Tuesday’s
match won’t have any bearing
on playoff seeding, but will de-
termine the middle of the
Wright County Conference, as
GSL currently sits at No. 6 and
Litchfield No. 7. Both teams
are 3-3 in conference play.
Early on in the game against
PEM, linebacker Kevin Nowak
streaked past the line of scrim-
mage and absolutely flattened
PEM’s running back in the
backfield as the Panther crowd
let out a mighty roar.
I celebrated with Kevin, and
graciously greeted their run-
ning with a, “Welcome to
Wright County.”
This year’s team turned the
corner a lot faster and more ef-
ficiently than we did, and will
also face opponents in the play-
offs who haven’t been cutting
their teeth against teams that
give you a gut check and hit
you in the mouth with a smile.
For years, it wasn’t uncom-
mon for two to three teams
from the WCC to make it to the
Metrodome in Class AAA.
That doesn’t mean the Pan-
thers should take any of their
Section 2 foes lightly. But they
should be a little angry about
the position they’re in and play
with something to prove.
Like 2004, this Panther team
is a dangerous dark horse,
snarling and kicking in the
Class AAA shadows.
I’ll concede that there are
better teams in the state at our
level, but you’d be hard
pressed to find a tougher con-
ference.
GSL could very well make it
back to the state tournament, or
let it fall by the wayside to one
of these Section 2 teams.
About the only thing they
can do for certain, is show
them how Wright County foot-
ball is played.
I say, bring on the welcom-
ing party.

Pastor’s Corner
The line separating good from evil
“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” — Romans 12:21
T
he Russian writer and dissident Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn very astutely remarked that “the line dividing good
and evil cuts through the heart of every human being.” All of us have the capacity for both good and evil with-
in us and every day is a struggle to help the “better angels” prevail. Perhaps what separates the saints from the
sinners is not so much that some sin and others don’t, but that the saints recognize their sinful nature and are better at
resisting their sinful impulses. The essential work of our lives is to know that this line is there and to stay on the side
of the good, resisting the never-ending lure and temptation of evil. We should pray for the wisdom and discernment to
recognize where the line separating good from evil runs, and for the goodwill and fortitude to stay on the side of the
good.

Record
UWMC kicks off 53rd-annual campaign
The United Way of
McLeod County (UWMC)
recently kicked off its 53rd-
annual campaign to raise
funds for its 35 partner agen-
cies and programs and its
own Dolly Parton’s Imagina-
tion Library and community
initiatives. The need for the
programs and services that
our partner agencies provide
remain at a high level.
While there has been better
news on the jobs front and
housing markets of late, liv-
ing costs continue to rise. De-
mands on public agencies,
food shelves, clothes banks
and utility funds are high —
and from people who have
never requested assistance
before. State funding to pub-
lic and private agencies has
been cut, at the same time
that requests for assistance
are increasing. United Way
helps fill that gap.
The UWMC supports pro-
grams in the areas of emer-
gency and basic needs, health
and human services, child de-
velopment and community
development. It doesn’t just
provide a blank check to its
partners, it funds specific pro-
grams with measurable out-
come objectives ensuring the
funds it invests on your be-
half are making the greatest
impact on community needs.
United Way has delivered
nearly $1 million in commu-
nity investment grants to part-
ner agencies over the last six
years. The 2014-15 campaign
is under way, with a goal of
$270,000.
The organization realizes
that you may be facing finan-
cial pressures in your own
home, but hopes you’ll give
as generously as you can. If
you work for one of the busi-
nesses that allow you to do-
nate through payroll deduc-
tion, that is the easiest way. If
your employer doesn’t offer a
workplace campaign, please
ask if they will start one. If
you’ve received UWMC’s
brochure in the newspaper,
please reply. You can also do-
nate online at: www.united
waymcleodcounty.org or by
mail to 218 Main St. S, Suite
124, PO Box 504, Hutchin-
son, MN 55350.
Why give to United Way?
• It’s efficient — over the
last eight years administrative
and fundraising costs average
19 percent.
• It’s local — That means
81 percent of funds raised are
used for programs that benefit
McLeod County residents.
• All operating decisions
are made by a board consist-
ing of 15 McLeod County
residents.
• It’s connected — Partners
with area agencies that in
2013 provided services to
over 7,500 people.
• It’s accountable — Each
year UWMC is independently
reviewed by a local auditor.
• It’s subject to stringent
United Way Worldwide mem-
bership requirements.
The theme this year is “Be
the Change.” Whether you
give your funds, your voice,
or your time, you are making
a difference for many in
McLeod County.
