The 2015 Glencoe-Silver
Lake cross country season
inched closer to the finish line
with the Wright County Con-
ference West championship
meet, held on Tuesday, Oct.
20, in New London. The Pan-
ther boys’ team took third
overall, with the girls’ squad
coming in fifth.
GSL’s top male runner,
Michael Schaefer took runner-
up honors on the 5,000-meter
course with a time of 17 min-
utes, 15.60 seconds. Schaefer
edged out Annandale’s Za-
ckary Boos by just over a sec-
ond-and-a-half, with Boos
crossing the line in 17:17.20.
The pair of seniors was just
under nine and 11 seconds off
the pace of conference cham-
pion Sam Abegglen of Mound
Westonka, who won the meet
in a time of 17:06.70.
The Panthers’ duo of Austin
Schroepfer and Michael
Meyer finished ninth and
10th, respectively. Schroepfer
bested Meyer by an eyelash as
the two finished with times of
17:56.40 and 17:57.00.
Freshman Joseph Knudten
placed 19th in 18:25.10. He
was followed by sophomore
Tony Fischer, who rounded
out GSL’s scoring with a
28th-place time of 18:50.90.
Also competing were fresh-
man Oscar Pena and senior
Tyler Hausladen, who placed
40th and 41st with respective
times of 19:24.60 and
19:25.70.
The Panthers finished solid-
ly in third with 70 points in
all, 29 behind second-place
Mound Westonka and 28
ahead of fourth-place New
London-Spicer.
Megan Siewert led the GSL
girls with a 16th-place finish
of 21:43.90 seconds over the
same course. Fellow eighth-
grader Annamaria Falcon was
not far behind her classmate,
as she took 19th with a
22:03.00.
Representing the Panthers’
seventh-graders, Majkya Met-
calf concluded her race in a
time of 22:15.10, which was
good for 21st.
Eighth-grader Gia Venier
placed 37th in 23:33.50, with

They wanted no part of sharing the
Wright County Conference West champi-
onship, and thanks to a clutch perform-
ance in their regular-season finale, mem-
bers of the Glencoe-Silver Lake volley-
ball team have the crown all to them-
selves.
The Panthers assured themselves sole
possession of the WCC West title by
completing a blemishless conference sea-
son in a four-game match victory at An-
nandale on Thursday, Oct. 22.
GSL finished with a perfect 7-0 confer-
ence record, one game better than New
London-Spicer.
“This group is a phenomenal group,”
coach Lori Schwirtz said. “They are all
very hard workers that want to become
better everyday.”
GSL led the WCC West wire-to-wire
and had defeated eventual conference
runner-up NL-S in three games back on
Sept. 22.
However, due to the circuit not recog-
nizing head-to-head results as a tiebreak-
er, the Panthers had to win at Annandale
to assure their spoils would not be shared
with the Wildcats.
“The conference title is super important
to us,” said middle hitter Erika Ribar,
who is one of five seniors on this year’s
squad.
However, Annandale appeared ready
and able to play the role of spoiler. The
hosts took GSL to the limit before falling
26-24 in the first game before winning
game two 25-22.
The Panthers took control of the crucial
third game, winning 25-14, and then
clinched the title with a 25-21 victory in
the fourth and final game.
“What a great match versus Annan-
dale’s tall and tough offense,” Schwirtz
said. “GSL has so many weapons it is
hard for teams to figure us out on de-
fense. It was a collaborate team effort and
just something to be very proud of.”
Outside hitter Maddie Monahan led
GSL with 10 kills, with four of those
coming in the final game.
Ribar and outside hitter Taylor Novak
each had nine kills, with setter Layne
Herrmann and outside hitter Cortney
Konen both tallying seven kills apiece.
There were digs aplenty to be had, and
Novak led the way with 32. Konen and
setter Jessica Lemke each had 15 digs,
while Herrmann accounted for 14.
Herrmann also set a team high 34 as-
sists. Lemke had two of the Panthers’
four service aces in the contest, with
Novak and middle hitter Maddy Kalen-
berg accounting for one each.
“This conference title means so much
for us; it has been one of our goals all
season,” libero Emily Muetzel said. “It
shows how hard we have worked this
season and how much we have im-
proved.”
The victory gave GSL a 24-5 overall
record. However, in the ultra-competitive
Section 2AA North grouping, that mark
was only good for a fourth-place subsec-

A third-consecutive trip to
the state tournament just was-
n’t in the cards for the Glen-
coe-Silver Lake football
team.
The Panthers were force-
fully stopped one step short
of state by Belle Plaine,
which handed its hosts their
most lopsided loss of the sea-
son, 34-6, in the Section
2AAA championship game
on Saturday, Oct. 24.
“We got beat fair and
square by a very good foot-
ball team, ” coach Scott
Tschimperle said. “We knew
that they were a good foot-
ball team that makes big
plays. To beat them, we knew
we had to not allow the big
play as well as control the of-
fensive line of scrimmage –
we didn’t do either.”
It was a sunny, yet brisk
and windy day as the two
teams met at Stevens Semi-
nary Stadium to determine
which would go to state. Ini-
tially, it appeared that GSL
would be capable of extend-
ing the Tigers two decade-
plus long state-less streak.
After holding Belle Plaine
to a three-and-out on its
opening drive of the game,
Panthers multi-back Teddy
Petersen had GSL fans
dreaming of victory.
The senior, who returned
after a three-game absence
due to a sports hernia and
played sparingly in the Pan-
thers’ 14-5 defeat of Holy
Family Catholic in the sec-
tional opener on Tuesday,
Oct. 20, ripped off a 28-yard
run on his first carry of the
2AAA final. The run, just
GSL’s second offensive play
of the afternoon, set the Pan-
thers up at the Tigers’ 24-
yard line.
However, that drive stalled
five yards short of the end
zone. Worse yet, it was also
Petersen’s lone highlight of
the day as his injury contin-
ued to rob GSL’s premier of-
fensive threat of much of his
burst and cutback ability.
“Teddy was so excited that
he could play,” Tschimperle
said. “But suffering with the
sports hernia, he just was not
close to what he could be.”
The game remained a close
affair early. Due to the stand-
out work of the Panthers de-
fense, which kept Belle
Plaine’s star quarterback
Luke Narveson at bay initial-
ly, the game remained score-
less through the opening
quarter.
While Tigers broke out
early in the second quarter,
converting an interception off
a tipped ball into a Narveson
39-yard touchdown pass to

make the score 6-0, GSL was
quick to respond.
The Panthers responded to
Belle Plaine’s opening score
with one of their own as a
two-yard pass from quarter-
back Luke Frahm to wide re-
ceiver Kyle Christensen knot-
ted the score at 6-6 with 5:08
remaining in the first half.
“We had two first quarter
drives stall out, costing us a
chance to go up early, but we
did a great job answering their
score right away,” Tschimper-
le said.
However, Belle Plaine
replied in kind by marching
63 yards in less than three
minutes to take the lead for
good on an 18-yard touch-
down toss that put the visitors
up 13-6 with 2:10 to go until
halftime.
And then the roof caved in.
The Tigers forced GSL into
a punting situation in its own
territory with under a minute
left in the half. However, the
Panthers – looking to surprise
and perhaps stun their oppo-
nent – attempted a fake kick
instead. Belle Plaine sniffed
out the mischief and took over
on downs just 30 yards from
the end zone.
It took just one play to
cover that distance on Narve-
son’s third touchdown throw
of the quarter. What had been
a close game suddenly was
leaning hard in the direction
of the visitors.
“We debated that fake punt
on the sideline. If it works,
great – if not, ugh,” Tschim-
perle said. “We would have
felt good going into half down
13-6 and we were still posi-
tive down 20-6, but with a
two-score deficit, we knew we
had our hands full.”
Belle Plaine remained in
firm control of the contest in
the second half as the GSL
struggled to find any consis-
tent ground against a swarm-
ing and confident Tigers de-
fense.
The Panthers’ defense re-
mained largely sound –
buoyed by a pair of intercep-
tions from defensive back
Mitch Kettner – but Belle
Plaine delivered a pair of
knockout blows – one via a
54-yard touchdown run in the
third quarter, the other on an
88-yard scoring scamper in
the fourth – that ensured that
the No. 2 seed, not the No. 1,
would represent the section in
the state bracket.
“We knew Narveson was
the real deal – I haven’t seen a
quarterback like that in at
least 10 years,” Tschimperle
said. “In addition to him,
Belle Plaine has a lot of offen-
sive weapons overall.”
As the game passed out of
reach, GSL began wholesale
swapping in of the reserves in
order to give as many players
one last taste of the gridiron.
For the Panther seniors, the
final horn and a 28-point de-
feat proved to be a terminus
for their high school football
careers. Lumps were in
throats as hugs were ex-
changed and tears were shed.
“You never want it to end,”
Tschimperle said. “We expect-
ed to go back to the state tour-
nament and that didn’t hap-
pen. It’s hard to take, but they
should hold their heads high.”
Fullback Nathan Schuch,
himself hampered by injury,
led GSL with 84 rushing
yards. He finished with 371
rushing yards and two touch-
downs for his junior season.
Petersen ran for 62 yards
and was the Panthers’ leading
receiver with 21 yards on
three receptions. He wrapped
his final injury-ravaged cam-
paign with 530 yards and four
touchdowns rushing to go
with 129 yards and three
scores receiving.
Quarterback Luke Frahm
completed five passes for one
touchdown and two intercep-
tions in the final turn of his in-
augural season as the Pan-
thers’ signal-caller. The junior
completed 40 passes on the
year for 692 yards and nine
touchdowns through the air, as
well as 371 yards and six
scores on the ground.
Sophomore running back
Carsen Streich managed just
32 yards against Belle Plaine,
but his rookie season on the
varsity remained tremendous.
In 10 games, Streich led the
team in several categories. He
was the team’s leading rusher
with 696 yards, as well as the
top receiver with 200 yards.
He also paced the squad with
12 total touchdowns, with
eight coming on the ground
and four through the air.
Defensively, linebacker
Nick Brelje finished his senior
season as the team’s top tack-
ler with 77 total; of those 42
were solo, which was also
best on the team.
Senior linebacker Tristan
Weber and junior defensive
back Tyler Ehrke tied for the
team lead in interceptions
with three apiece. Brelje, Ket-
tner and Petersen all tallied
two picks apiece on the year.
Brelje, Weber, Ehrke and sen-
ior defensive back Jacob Von-
Berge each had two fumble
recoveries this autumn.
Senior lineman Peyton Sell
was second on the team in
tackles with 66 and registered
the Panthers’ lone pick six of
the year, running in an inter-
ception for a touchdown
against Annandale on Sept. 4.
GSL finished the season
with a 7-3 overall record. The
Panthers were ranked as high
as No. 2 in the Class AAA
poll featuring a mix of fresh
faces and veterans that com-
piled a 5-0 start to the season
before injuries and other vari-
ous difficulties conspired
against them.
“We faced a lot of adversity
and that kind of caught up to
us,” Tschimperle said. “But,
we win or lose as a team and
the kids fought hard until the
very end.”

Also running for the GSL
girls were freshman Kayla
Deyonge, who came in 44th
with a 25:22.80 and junior
Robin Swift, coming in 50th
in 26:00.40.
The Panthers recorded 135
points, seven shy of Water-
town-Mayer’s fourth-place
total of 128 and four ahead of
sixth-place Mound-Weston-
ka’s tally of 139.
Up next for GSL is the Sec-
tion 2A championship meet,
which is slated to begin at 4
p.m. Thursday.
This year’s competition is
hosted by Tri-City United and
will be contested at the Mont-
gomery Golf Course in Mont-
gomery. The Panthers previ-
ously ran the Montgomery

meet back on Sept. 10.

tion seed.
The Panthers lost out by
one point to Southwest Chris-
tian for the No. 3 seed, with
Belle Plaine – the unanimous
No. 1-ranked team in Class
AA – claiming the one seed
and Class AA’s sixth-ranked
squad, Jordan, taking the sec-
ond seed. SWC is ranked
10th.
GSL will face fifth-seeded
LeSueur-Henderson in the
subsection opener at 7 p.m.,
Thursday, Oct. 29. The Gi-
ants are 13-13 on the season
and finished fourth in the
Minnesota River Conference.
If the Panthers are able to
dispatch LSH in the opener,
they will likely face Belle
Plaine in the subsection semi-
finals at 6 p.m. Monday at
New Prague.
The subsection champi-
onship is slated to be decided
on Thursday, Nov. 5, with the
section title up for grabs two
nights later. Both the subsec-
tion and section finals will be
played at Gustavus Adolphus
College in St. Peter.
“I think we are really com-
ing together and ready for
sections,” Muetzel said. “We
continue to improve in prac-
tice and games.
“We are preparing for the
teams we will face and work-
ing as hard as we can so we
can get the wins against
them.”

Pastor’s Corner
Pastor Robert Nowak, Vacancy Pastor
Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Glencoe
The gold nugget
W
hen St. Paul wrote to the Philippians he gave them sound advice. Here is what he said, “Do everything without complain-
ing or arguing…” (Phil. 2:14). This applies to our everyday lives does it not? Have you ever stopped to consider how
much complaining or arguing you do every day?
Children, do you ever complain or argue? Do you ever say things like “You don’t let me go anywhere”? ”Why can’t I go out-
side?” “My friends all get to go.” Mothers, do you find yourselves complaining or arguing? “You never pick anything up.”
“Why don’t you listen?” “You said you’d take care of that last week and it’s still not done!” Fathers, are you ever found argu-
ing or complaining? “Why isn’t supper ready?” “Why didn’t you get this or that done today?” “All you do is nag, nag, nag.”
If we think back on the course of the day all of us can think of times we either complained or argued about something or some-
one—the boss, the wife, the husband, the children, work, school, etc.
The danger of complaining and arguing is that it soon becomes a way of life. Before long those who do it the most don’t
even realize they are doing it. It becomes a part of their everyday conversation, a part of their personality. Such individuals are
the hardest of all people to be around. Frequently they don’t have friends and can’t understand why, but of course no one en-
joys being around a complainer.
The same St. Paul who advised his listeners not to complain or argue also offered a potent remedy when we are guilty of
these thing. Here is what he said, “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure,
whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these
things (Phil. 4:8). Do you? Do you think about these things? God’s marvelous creation, the beautiful fall weather, the fall har-
vest, the splendor of the changing colors, the tranquility of a peaceful lake, the joyous times in your life, some sweet memory
from your childhood, the first time you held your newborn baby, the day you fell in love, past Christmases, and the grace of
God that loves you and gave His only Son to die for you so that you would have eternal joy in heaven. Perhaps we forget that
we’re God’s children, forgiven people, who are loved by Him. There is no greater gift than that! Thinking about these things
and more will go a long way on cutting down on the arguing and complaining in your life.
This weekly message is contributed by the following concerned citizens and businesses who
urge you to attend the church of your choice. To be added to this page, contact us at 320-864-5518.
