Cross-country
trio finishes
season at state
By Tom Carothers
Sports Editor
Once again, Glencoe-Silver Lake’s 2016 fall sports
season came to a close in
Northfield with the running of
the state cross-country meet
on the hills and trails of St.
Olaf College.
Three Panthers made the
cut for this year’s state Class
A field.
The GSL senior tandem of
Austin Schroepfer and
Michael Meyer were making
a return visit to the Class A
boys’ race, running this time
as individual qualifiers.
Seventh-grader Malayh
Metcalf was competing for
the first time in the girls’ competition.
As has become recent tradition, runners were greeted by
superb conditions, perhaps
even inching towards the “too
warm” part of the spectrum.
Sunny skies and temperatures already in the mid-50s
greeted Schroepfer and Meyer
as they toed the starting line
at 10 a.m., while the mercury
soared into the 60s by the
time Metcalf began her run an
hour later.
Schroepfer and Meyer ran
together for a majority of the
race, turning in identical splits
at the one-mile (five minutes,
14 seconds) and two-mile
(10:58) markers.
From there, Meyer pulled
away over the final mile, putting up a final split of 6:10.3
to log a finishing time of
17:08.3, to place him 50th out
of 176 Class A finishers.
Meyer averaged a 5:31 pace
overall to miss by a few seconds on a personal-record run
of 17:01.47, recorded in a

By Tom Carothers
Sports Editor
The 2016 season came to a close earlier than the Glencoe-Silver Lake volleyball team would have liked, as the Panthers lost in four games (20-25, 25-23,
20-25, 25-15) to Southwest Christian in
the Section 2AA North subsection semifinals.
In a mild upset, the third-seeded Stars
emerged from a tightly-contested first
three games to streak away in game four
and take the match 3-1.
SWC took the initial lead in three of
the four games, though GSL battled back
to take at least a brief lead in all four.
The Stars outlasted the Panthers in the
first and third game, powering to late
leads after both games teetered back and
forth through the early and middle points.
GSL’s lone victory came in the second
game after both squads saw advantages
come and go.
SWC led GSL 19-18 in the game before the Panthers took the lead for good
at 23-22 and went on to win 25-23 after
middle hitter Maddie Monahan popped
the ball over the Stars defense at the net
and into the unoccupied back left corner
for the final point of the contest.
Yet SWC simply would not be denied
the opportunity to face defending Class
AA state champion Belle Plaine in the
subsection final.
The Stars held a narrow lead for the
majority of the fourth game, with GSL

Personnel
committee
considers
data policies
By Karin Ramige
Publisher
The Glencoe City Council’s
Personnel Committee reviewed the city’s proposed
public and subject data policies at its Nov. 2 meeting.
The current policy consists
of only a few paragraphs. The
proposed policies separate
public data and subject data,
and were updated using the
Minnesota Department of Administration’s model policy in
accordance with the Government Data Practices Act
(Minnesota Statutes, Chapter
13).
The Government Data
Practices Act presumes that
all government data are public unless a state or federal
law says the data are not public.
It also states that data subjects have certain rights related to a government entity collection, creating, and keeping
government data about them.
The policy goes on to say
that the city cannot give private data to the general public, but an individual can have
access to private data about
them.
The policies state that public data must be kept in a way
that is easy to access, explains the process for obtaining the data and grants the
city the right to charge for
copies.
The committee recommended approval of the policies by the council.
The full council approved
the new policies at its regular
meeting Nov. 7.
The Personnel Committee
meeting was then closed to
discuss police union negotiations.

I
t’s a new day today, the ballots have been cast, and barring any recounts, the election season is now officially over. What
does this mean? For one thing, there will be no more political ads on TV for a while. Thankfully! More to the point
though, the fact that the elections are over means we have leaders for whom to pray. Many will be new leaders, some will
be returning. Some will be leaders for whom we voted, others will be leaders for whom we did not vote. Regardless of our personal feelings about the victors of these elections, two passages inspired by God and written by St. Paul many years ago apply
to us still today:
“I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone- for kings and all those in
authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior.” (1
Timothy 2: 1-3)
“Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good.” (Titus 3:1)
2016 has been a particularly brutal and bitter political season. Thankfully the elections are over. As we move forward, please
join me in praying for our community, our state, our country, and all of our leaders:
“Heavenly Father, watch over the people of this land. Grant that we, who came from many nations with many different languages, may become a united people. We pray you also to watch over our national leaders. Let them serve with honest hearts
for the common good. Keep the light of freedom bright in our homeland. Bless our state and local officials, that they make wise
decisions that benefit us. We pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen!”
