Panthers take down Tigers
By Tom Carothers
Sports Editor
It was a happy night for the GlencoeSilver Lake boys' basketball team as the
Panthers recorded their first win of the
season on Friday, Dec. 9, at Hutchinson.
GSL improved to 1-3 on the season
and kept the Tigers winless this winter
by means of a 65-50 victory that provided the Panthers a taste of happiness after
a difficult start to the season.
"It was really nice to get that win,"
coach Robb DeCorsey said. "We haven't
done that great against Hutch in recent
years, but that was the largest margin of
victory for us against them since I've
been coaching."
DeCorsey credited improvement in
shooting and rebounding as keys to
GSL's win over its neighboring rival.
The coach also noted that the triumph
came at a good time after the Panthers
had dropped to 0-3 with losses to Sibley
East and Tri-City United earlier in the
week.
"The only problem is, we win last Friday, but then we don't play again until
this coming Saturday," he said. "We
have many things to work on, though.
The guys just want to get out there and
play, but we have so much to breakdown
and go over both offensively and defensively."
The Panthers did enough on both ends
of the court against Hutchinson to pull
away from the Tigers in the second half
after both teams were locked in a tight
struggle before the break.
Center Jacob Litzau led the way with
18 points despite sitting for much of the
first half after falling into early foul
trouble. Forward Mitchell Boesche
scored 15 points, while guard Tyler
Ehrke posted 11 points.
DeCorsey said that Boesche's play
went a long way towards determining
the winner at Hutchinson.
"Mitchell didn't hesitate – he came out
looking for his shot and was hitting it,"
DeCorsey said. "He really got us going."
Last Friday's performance was a far
cry from the results that preceded it.
GSL suffered a 75-61 loss at Sibley East
on Tuesday, Dec. 6, and then dropped a
64-52 decision in its home opener
against visiting Tri-City United on
Thursday, Dec. 8.
"Against TCU, we just settled for bad
shots," DeCorsey said. "We also hit just
52 percent of our free throws. TCU
made just one more shot than we did,
but made 10 more free throws."
Litzau led all scorers with 21 points
against TCU, but was the only Panther
player to score in double digits. Against
Sibley East, guard Luke Frahm led GSL

Panthers fall
to hot Hutch
By Tom Carothers
Sports Editor
The Glencoe-Silver Lake
girls’ basketball team dropped
to 2-2 on the season with a
98-70 loss at hot-shooting
Hutchinson on Friday, Dec. 9.
“It was a great game,”
coach Jeff Monahan said. “We
would have liked to have defended better, but when the
other team shoots the lights
out like that, what are you
going to do?”
While the Panthers did all
they could to keep the game
close through much of the
first half, the hot-shooting
Tigers pulled away with a trio
of three pointers in the final
minutes before halftime to
pull away from the visitors for
good.
Hutchinson made 18 three
pointers in the game, shooting
54.55 percent from beyond
the arc in doing so, with three
Tigers players sinking five
three-pointers each.
Conversely, GSL went just
2-for-20 from beyond the arc

Gymnasts open at Northfield
By Tom Carothers

The Glencoe-Silver Lake
gymnastics team got its season off to a spirited start at the
"Winter Wonderland" meet in
Northfield on Saturday, Dec.
10.
Due to the snowy conditions, only four of the eight
teams scheduled to appear at
the Northfield Gymnastics
Center actually showed up for
the competition, making for a
quick day for the Panthers.
The meet used a unique
scoring system in that the
teams predicted their score at
the beginning of the meet, and
then attempted to come as
close to their call as possible.
"This is also considered a
'fun meet,'" coach Kim Hahn
said. "The teams could also
wear their ugliest leotards during competition, make their
hair look funny, makeup, etc."
The GSL varsity shot for a
score of 100, with the junior
varsity going for a score of
70. Under meet rules, the varsity finished third with a
104.80, while the JV took first
with a 71.9.
For the GSL varsity,
Makayla Wigern recorded a

Busy weekend for Panther wrestlers
By Tom Carothers
Sports Editor
It was a busy weekend for
the Glencoe-Silver Lake/
Lester Prairie wrestling team.
The Panthers grappled in a triangular meet at Northfield on
Friday, Dec. 9, then headed
back east for a tournament in
Chanhassen the next day.
It was a rough evening for
GSL/LP at Northfield, with
the Panthers coming up on the
short end of both of its matches – losing 57-13 to the host
Raiders and 66-6 to fellow triangular competitor New
Prague.
Panther wrestlers won three
matches against Northfield.
Tanner Chmielewski scored a
major decision (10-1) at 120
pounds, Kole Polzin won by
fall at 138 and Cody Rae
scored a 6-0 decision at 160.
Against the Trojans, only Peyton Sell's win by fall at 285
prevented the shutout.
Just over 12 hours later,
GSL/LP was back in action at
the Ethan Herman Memorial
Tournament at Chanhassen
High School.
Going up against several
squads from Class AAA, the
Panthers managed to finish
seventh out of 11 teams by
posting a score of 72.
Dalton
Kosek
was
GSL/LP's top individual finisher, earning third in the 170pound bracket. Kosek defeated Chaska/Chanhassen's Anders Severtson 5-3 in his final
match to clinch the third place
finish.
Aaron Castillo (195) and
Polzin (138) both finished
fourth in their respective
weight classes, with Cody Rae
(160) and Sell (220) each taking fifth in their brackets.
Michael Meyer (126) and Paul
Lemke (285) both claimed
sixth-place finishes.
The Panthers host their
home opener on Thursday,
with Dassel-Cokato, Mound
Westonka and WatertownMayer paying GSL a visit for
a double dual meet.
On Saturday, GSL/LP is
scheduled to compete in an
eight-team tournament at
Richfield High School.

nna Mary Robertson’s life was one of hard farm labor in the late 1800’s. In addition, she experienced the unspeakable grief of
watching five of her children die in infancy. Some years later, her husband died from a heart attack and she became a widow. By the
time she reached her 70’s, arthritis was taking over her body. Since she could no longer do hard physical labor, she then picked up a
brush and began to paint.
Without any formal training, her pictures radiated something that everyday people and art critics alike could not resist. Unexpeditedly, her
pictures radiated joy. That was how Anna Mary Robertson Moses-Grandma Moses-got her start as an artist. She picked up her brush and she
shared her joy. And she kept right on sharing her joy until the age of 101.
As Christians, we know that we will have a rough ride during our short life on this earth. After all, that is what our sin has done. It has made
a misery of everything it has touched.
But that’s why Jesus came. Through his perfect life and death on our behalf, he has rescued us. And so, through faith in him, we stand forgiven. This means that, even in the worst of our difficult moments, our Savior will carry us through. This also means that the best is yet to
come. Yes, this news is the JOY of Christmas. Paint that joy in all aspects of your life.

Remodel
The Supplemental Feasibility Report for changes to the Baxter Avenue Public Improvement Project
was reviewed. Changes include the
removal of 11th Street from Elliott
Avenue to Ford Avenue and Elliott
Avenue from 11th Street to 12th
Street from the project. This was recommended as there is minimal underground work to be done on these
streets and the surfaces are in adequate condition.
Also recommended and reviewed
was the addition to the project to include 11th Street from Armstrong
Avenue to Chandler Avenue for
reclamation, paving and trench repair
for the installation of a new waterline.
Changes to the proposed project
will result in approximately
$100,000 in savings.
Councilor Robeck wanted to table
the project and recommended
changes to the project.
Councilor Perschau motioned to
accept the supplemental feasibility
report for the changes and set the

and this supplemental report was
received by the council on November
21, 2016, and
WHEREAS, the report provides
information regarding whether the
proposed project is necessary, costeffective, and feasible,
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL
OF GLENCOE, MINNESOTA:
The council will consider the improvement of such streets in accordance with the report and the assessment of abutting property and properties for which benefit can be attributed for all or a portion of the cost of
the improvement pursuant to Minnesota Statutes, Chapter 429, at an
estimated total cost of the improvement of $5,480,000.
A public hearing shall be held on
such proposed improvement on the
19th day of December, 2016, at the
Glencoe City Center at 7:05 p.m. and
the city administrator shall give
mailed and published notice of such
hearing and improvement as required
