Kole Polzin had his game face on for a Glencoe-Silver
Lake/Lester Prairie wrestling team that participated in
seven competitions over four days last week. The
Panthers finished fifth in the 12-team Andover Husky
Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 12 after splitting the
spoils in a trio of midweek matches.

Things started clicking into
place for the Glencoe-Silver
Lake girls’ basketball team
last week as the Panthers
broke above the .500 mark for
the first time this season.
GSL ran its overall record
to 3-2 on the season and its
winning streak to three games
after a 53-45 win over Tri-
City United on Tuesday, Dec.
8, followed by a 68-38 shel-
lacking of host LeSueur-Hen-
derson four days later.
After opening its season
with two losses – one close,
one blowout – the Panthers
entered this week with a head
of steam with three wins of
ever-increasing differentials.
GSL’s run began with a 52-
47 win at Sibley East on Fri-
day, Dec. 4, but it was last
Tuesday’s game against TCU
in which the Panthers’ home
crowd finally got to see its
team claim victory.
The Panthers ran out to a
31-23 halftime lead against
the Titans and held onto the
eight-point advantage in the
final count to level their
record at 2-2 on the year.
The backcourt sister act of
Mac and Maddie Monahan
paced GSL with 21 and 18
points in the game, with the
Panther defense holding
TCU’s top scorers to 12 points
apiece.
Maddie Monahan also led
GSL with seven assists four
steals. Forward Maddy Kalen-
berg logged five assists and a
team high eight rebounds –
six of those coming on the de-
fensive boards.
Win No. 2 in the books, the
Panthers took their show on
the road for a Saturday after-
noon matchup in Henderson
and came away with their
largest win of the season thus
far.
“We came out ready to play
with full court pressure.
Scouting them gave us an idea
of what we could do against
them to succeed,” coach Zach
Otto-Fisher said. “The girls
did a great job of listening to
the plan and executing.”
GSL took it to the Giants
from the start, rolling up a 37-
22 halftime lead. The Panthers
put up 31 points in the second
half while holding LSH to a
scant 16 points – just six of
which were scored off the
Panthers’ starters – en route to
a 30-point triumph.
“The starting five came out
with energy and ran the floor
really well,” Otto-Fisher said.
“They pushed the ball up,
made great passes and most
importantly finished at the
hoop.”
Guards Mac and Maddie
Monahan once again led the
squad in scoring with 24 and
17 points, respectively. The
Panthers allowed their hosts
just one double-digit scorer in
the game.
Maddie Monahan posted
team bests in assists (8) and
steals (5), while Mac Mona-
han had seven assists and four
steals. Molli Cacka posted a
team high seven rebounds,
while fellow guard Rachael
Popp had four rebounds with
three steals. Forward Saman-
tha Voigt hauled in six re-
bounds, with five of those
coming on the offensive end.
“The only downfall was
when Ashley Bandemer
popped her elbow out of place
and it looks to be a fractured
elbow – not good,” Otto-Fish-
er said. “I thought Molli
Cacka came in, picked up the
extra minutes really well and
did a nice job finishing her
shots as well.”
The Panthers traveled to
Mayer Lutheran on Tuesday,
Dec. 15, after the Chronicle
went to press.
The Crusaders entered that
game with a 4-1 record, with a
three-point loss to Watertown-
Mayer as its only blemish.
GSL returns home for a
Thursday night matchup
against Lester Prairie, before
heading back out on the road
to play at Jordan next Tues-
day.
Panthers on a roll

It was the only game of
the week for the Glencoe-
Silver Lake boys’ basketball
team – and it wasn’t much to
write home about. A
matchup at New Prague on
Tuesday, Dec. 8 turned out
to be a forgettable affair,
with the Panthers falling 67-
25 to drop to 1-3 on the sea-
son.
Whereas GSL’s previous
two losses both came in the
final moments of games
against Hutchinson and Sib-
ley East, this time matters
were settled early on. The
Trojans led 39-17 at half-
time, then held their visitors
to a miniscule eight points
after the break en route the
42-point decision.
No Panther hit double dig-
its in scoring, with forward
Jacob Popelka and guard
Shane Ehrke leading the
squad with seven and six
points, respectively. Guard
Luke Frahm and forward
Jacob Litzau mustered up
five points apiece, with for-
ward Alex Romano wrap-
ping up GSL’s scoring with
two points.
The Panthers had a full
week to let the loss sink in,
followed by a long road trip.
GSL traveled to New Lon-
don-Spicer to begin this
week’s slate of games on
Tuesday, Dec. 15, after the
Chronicle went to press.
A two-game homestand
awaits the Panthers follow-
ing their trip to New Lon-
don. Norwood Young Amer-
ica visits GSL on Thursday
night, followed by Dassel-
Cokato on Friday.
The Panthers close out
their pre-Christmas slate of
games with a trip to Jordan
next Tuesday.

Tuesday, Dec. 8, for the first of the three

285.
GSL hosted Spectrum and St. Agnes in
a triangular meet on Tuesday, Dec. 15,
after the Chronicle went to press and
compete at Dassel-Cokato on Thursday.

8 a.m. start in an invitational meet at

Competing in its first
dual meet of the season, the
Glencoe-Silver Lake gym-
nastics team came in sec-
ond to host New Prague on
Thursday, Dec. 10,
135.225-119.000.
“I think they did a great
job. I could see a huge im-
provement just from the
Northfield meet,” coach
Kim Hahn said. “They real-
ly took the critiques that we
gave them from the first
meet and their scores re-
flected that.”
Marissa Greeley led the
Panthers with a second-
place finish in the all-
around with a score of
31.925. Teammates Gia Ve-
nier and Ellie Schmidt fol-
lowed in third- and fourth-
place with respective scores
of 29.525 and 26.725.
Greeley was the Pan-
thers’ top finisher in all four
events. She took third on
balance beam with a score
of 7.925 and took fifth on
floor exercise with an 8.35.
Greeley shared her place-
ment with teammates in
two events. She split fifth
on uneven bars with Venier
after both notched a 7.35
and fifth on vault with
Kirsten Barott after each
logged an 8.3.
GSL was originally
scheduled to host a home
triangular meet against An-
nandale and Dassel-Cokato
this Thursday, but that com-
petition has been moved to
Jan. 26.
The Panthers are now off
of competition until 2016,
with a trip to St. Peter next
up on Tuesday, Jan. 5.

Border to Border Broad-
band: Better Together con-
ference co-hosted by
Blandin Foundation and the
Minnesota Office for
Broadband Development,
will propel future broad-
band work around the state.
Erickson was there repre-
senting the Renville and
Sibley counties as a
Blandin Broadband Com-
munity (BBC). Selected as
a BBC in 2014, local lead-
ers have since convened a
planning team to identify
best opportunities for en-
hancing broadband access
and use.
In 2015, Renville and
Sibley counties were
awarded $24,605 to equip
20 schools and businesses
with Wi-Fi access, $10,000
to create e-marketing plat-
form and tourism apps, and
$3,750 to market the con-
cept of tech centers and
maker spaces across the
two counties.
This work is one step on
a crucial journey many
rural Minnesota communi-
ties are making to ensure a
vibrant prosperous econo-
my and a high quality of
life for their residents
through access to and use
of high-speed Internet.
Last week, these rural
Minnesota communities
came together to set a com-
mon trajectory for their in-
dividual journeys.
Driven by a sense of ur-
gency and a shared need to
coordinate, conference at-
tendees walked through the
two-day long process to
create and develop a plan
for sharing and a vision for
the broadband network
Minnesota needs to ensure
a vibrant prosperous econo-
my and quality of life for
all.
The vision states,
“Everyone in Minnesota
will be able to use conven-
ient, affordable world-class
broadband networks that
enable us to survive and
thrive in our communities
and across the globe.”
“If we don’t all work to-
gether we are going to fall
short of our goal of improv-
ing access to the Internet
for all Minnesotans,” said
Erickson. “And falling
short will leave future gen-
erations at a disadvantage.
Without a common effort,
we cannot realize the full
potential of what ubiqui-
tous border to border
broadband can do for our
state.”
In her remarks to confer-
ence goers, Blandin Foun-
dation President Dr. Kath-
leen Annette said, “It is our
shared responsibility and
opportunity to partner bet-
ter together for a better
Minnesota. But collabora-
tion often is not easy. It
takes trust and will and,
most of all, a common
commitment.”
This commitment will
manifest itself in the next
year as broadband champi-
ons work to share the vi-
sion with their local com-
munities, counties and leg-
islators.
Blandin Foundation
works for vibrant rural
Minnesota communities by
investing in community
leaders and working with
partners to expand opportu-
nity for all residents. Locat-
ed in Grand Rapids, it is
one of only a handful of
foundations in the U.S. fo-
cused exclusively on rural
communities and the
largest rural-based private
foundation in Minnesota.

Dr. Tom Rakow, Pastor
Grace Bible Church of Silver Lake
Good news at a bad time
M
y dad, stripped down to his t-shirt and dress pants, was sitting on the exam table with my mom on his left,
and I on his right. The lung cancer doctor slowly opened the door, and stood in silence with a somber look
on his face. The message the doctor meant to convey was obvious.
However, my dad the eternal optimist, eventually decided to break the awkwardness of the moment by asking, “What’s the good news?”
To which the doctor responded slowly and with great seriousness, “Mr. Rakow, I have no good news.”
Immediately the words, “I have good news!” shot through my mind. Although many years have now passed, I cannot think of a time when I
was more grateful for being entrusted with sharing the good news of eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ.
At times we are all required to share sad or even bad news. For example, there is the company boss who finds it necessary to tell a longtime
employee that their position is being eliminated. Indeed, it can be an unpleasant job to tell a person they are being let go from their place of
work.
No one envies the doctor who must explain that the cancer has spread, or that “it’s just a matter of time.” Certainly no one wants to share –
or receive – that kind of news. Then there is the police officer or pastor who must notify a parent that their child has died.
Nevertheless, the Christian has the privilege of sharing the good news that everyone needs. While it is true that not everyone will receive
Jesus Christ as their Savior, it is still wonderful news that He is available to all. Yes, Jesus is the prescription that a dying world needs. He is
the life preserver that, when grasped, can carry a person safely into eternity. Indeed, we can say as the angel who announced Christ’s birth
said, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people" (Luke 2:10). God’s good news was meant to be
shared – and received!

The Minnesota Department
of Health (MDH) recently an-
nounced that it has awarded
$467,889 in funding through
the Statewide Health Im-
provement Program (SHIP)
to Meeker-McLeod-Sibley
(MMS) Community Health
Services (CHS).
SHIP funding is available
to community health boards,
which work in partnership
with communities, work-
places, schools and health
care, to support efforts that
increase opportunities for ac-
tive living, healthy eating and
avoiding commercial tobacco
use and exposure to second-
hand smoke.
According to Allie Frei-
drichs, MMS CHS adminis-
trator, “SHIP is about bring-
ing everyone together to fight
obesity and chronic diseases.
The needs of each communi-
ty can be better met through
collaborative work. The im-
pacts of obesity are felt by
everyone.”
SHIP has been instrumen-
tal in helping Minnesota
make progress on obesity and
commercial tobacco use, fac-
tors that contribute to chronic
diseases, disability and death.
All Minnesota counties are
participating in SHIP, which
is in its fourth round of fund-
ing.
Minnesota has more work
to do, considering 27.6 per-
cent of adults in Minnesota
are obese (CDC), 14.4 per-
cent of adult Minnesotans
smoke (Minnesota Adult To-
bacco Survey), and cancer,
heart disease and stroke were
among the top five leading
causes of death in Minnesota
in 2013 (Minnesota Depart-
ment of Health Center for
Health Statistics).
SHIP communities choose
from a menu of strategies
based on the latest science
that MDH compiled in col-
laboration with local public
health. Communities select
strategies that best align with
local needs to address chronic
disease.
Among the efforts, Meek-
er-McLeod-Sibley SHIP
plans to:
• Work with local commu-
nities and school districts to
make it easier and safer for
students to walk or bike to
school.
• Work with local growers,
farmer’s markets and schools
to make it easier for students
and community members to
eat healthy, locally grown
foods.
• Work with local health-
care providers to help people
quit smoking.
Launched in 2008 as part
of Minnesota’s bipartisan
health reform effort, SHIP
helps Minnesotans live
longer, healthier lives while
building healthy, vital com-
munities.
