SE School Board
receives update on
church parking lot
By Amy Newsom
Correspondent
Sibley East Superintendent
Jim Amsden has made contacts to explore the potential
uses and number of possible
parking spots in the lot offered by the Arlington United
Methodist Church.
Amsden made the statement during the regular
monthly meeting of the Sibley East School Board on
Monday night, Dec. 19.
Sibley East Attorney Tony
Nerud has also discovered
that the lot is currently zoned
residential. Nerud stated that
he contacted City of Arlington Attorney Ross Arneson to
see how willing the city
would be to rezone the lot.
Arneson, according to
Nerud, said he thought the
city would look favorably on
this as parking has been a
problem near the school. Arneson is also checking into
the street assessments.

Final tax levy will increase
by 2.5% in City of Arlington
By Kurt Menk
Editor
The Arlington City Council, during its regular meeting
on Monday night, Dec. 19,
unanimously adopted a resolution to approve the final
2015 tax levy for collection
in 2016. The tax levy will increase from $791,644 to
$811,428. This reflects an increase of 2.5 percent over last
year.
City Council members
Michelle Battcher, Jim Heiland, James Jaszewski, Jennifer Nuesse and Galen Wills
all voted in favor of the resolution.
The final tax levy is lower
than the preliminary tax levy
which was originally set in
September. The City Council,
at that time, unanimously
adopted a resolution to approve the preliminary tax
levy for collection in 2016.
At that time it reflected a 4.2
percent hike over last year.
Since that time, the City
Council has held a couple of
workshops and has cut over
$13,500 from the budget.
Arlington once again has
the lowest municipal per
capita tax in Sibley County.
Arlington has accomplished this ranking even
though its state aid has been
reduced since 2002. Of those
five times, four have taken
place in the past nine years.
The City Council, during
the previous eight years, has
approved final tax levies of
2.2, zero, 5.9, three, three,
zero, 1.6, 2.96 and 2.5 percent increases respectively.
In addition, the City Council unanimously adopted a
resolution to approve the
2016 municipal budget.
Fiber
Frontier Communications
representatives Mike Paletta
and Matthew Kallsen presented a brief update on their
company.
Paletta and Kallsen said
there are currently local technicians who cover the Arlington area.
They said the company is
in the second year of a fiveyear plan with Connect
America Funding. This will
bring faster and more reliable
internet speeds to the area.
Up to 40 MPS is already offered in the Arlington community.
In addition, Frontier Communications currently has
77.276 feet or 14.64 miles of
fiber in Arlington.
Paletta and Kallsen added
that Frontier Communications continues to invest in
and develop its fiber network
throughout the Arlington
area.
Bus Barn
Lease
The School Board unanimously approved a motion to
approve a bus barn lease between the School District and
the Sibley County Fair
Board. The lease allows Sibley East to use building number 11 at the fairgrounds for
$1,000 per month. According
to Amsden, that is an increase
of $25 per month.
Nerud stated that Sibley
East could terminate the lease
with the Fair Board with a
90-day notice.
He mentioned that if the
City of Gaylord decides to
use the bus garage/shop located in Gaylord for the proposed medical school, Sibley
East could consider a new
larger facility to serve as a
shop and garage.
5-1 Vote
The School Board voted 51 and approved a motion to
approve the 2016 payable in
2017 levy of $3,945,208.11.
That is an increase of 1.91
percent over the actual 2015
payable in 2016 levy which
was $3,871,180.26.
School Board member
Nathan Kranz voted against
the levy. Kranz felt the
School Board should have
gone with the “voter approved referendum.”
On Sept. 19, the School
Board voted 5-1 to authorize
an additional new Board approved referendum authority
in the amount of approximately $74.84 per adjusted
pupil unit. The School Board
approved referendum is $300
per adjusted pupil unit;
$225.16 voter approved allowance and $74.84 Board
approved allowance.
Kranz voted against the
Board approved referendum.
Non-Exempt
Employee
The School Board voted 51 and approved a motion to
delay implementing the approved designation of nonexempt employee status for
the Sibley East Community
Education coordinator and
Sibley East transportation assistant.
At the Nov. 22 Sibley East
School Board meeting, Board
members voted 5-1 and approved a motion to designate
the Community Education
coordinator and transportation assistant as non-exempt
employees. The School
Board had to review those
positions before the Fair
Labor Standards Act (FLSA)

Council votes 3-2 for economic development,
and planning and zoning services at meeting
By Kurt Menk
Editor
The Arlington City Council, during its regular meeting
on Monday night, Dec. 19,
voted 3-2 and approved a motion to offer a one-year contract to the Municipal Development Group to handle the
economic development duties
and retain Cynthia SmithStrack to handle the planning
and zoning duties for the City
of Arlington in 2017.
Smith-Strack, who had
handled both the economic
development, and planning
and zoning duties in the past,
will be paid $80 per hour to
provide the planning and zoning services.
The Municipal Development Group will be paid $85
per hour to provide the economic development services.
Arlington resident Holly
Kreft is a consultant for the
Municipal Development
Group and will provide those
services. She will be in Ar-
lington one day a week.
City Council members Jim
Heiland, James Jaszewski
and Jennifer Nuesse voted in
favor of the motion.
City Council members
Michelle Battcher and Galen
Wills voted against the motion.
Battcher said the Arlington
Economic Development Authority (EDA) members supported a move to have Sibley
County provide economic development services at a much
lower rate of $40 per hour.
Wills was concerned that
there would be no daytime
hours with Smith-Strack for
planning and zoning. He also
said it is difficult to describe
plans over the phone and
through e-mail. Wills added
that Smith-Strack did not return some telephone calls in
the past.
City Administrator Liza
Donabauer replied that
Smith-Strack would be willing to set up appointments
and meet citizens.
Jaszewski said he could not
believe that Smith-Strack did
not return phone calls.
Heiland said the Planning
& Zoning Committee seems
to be happy with SmithStrack.
Prior to the 3-2 vote,
Mayor Rich Nagel stated that
the Planning & Zoning Committee was very complimentary of Smith-Strack. That
same seniment was echoed
by committee members in the
audience.
Nagel, however, stated that
EDA members believed a
change was needed in that
particular area.
Dick Thomes, who serves
on the EDA, said that group
favored going with Sibley
County because its director
has already contacted every
business in town and the
services provided would cost
much less. Thomes added
that the EDA group would
like to change its monthly
meeting date from Thursday
nights to either the second or
fourth Monday evening.
About one month ago, the
City Council also interviewed
representatives from WSB &
Associates to provide both
economic development, and
planning and zoning services.
The cost would have been
$2,000 per month for both
services plus $300 per meeting.
Donabauer contacted cities
and received some favorable
reviews on WSB & Associates, but she also received an
unfavorable review from one
community.
Nuesse, prior to the decision, said she was set to vote
for WSB & Associates until
she heard that unfavorable review.
The Arlington City Council
will hold its next regular
meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday,
Jan. 3.

Recycling will soon be available in Faxon Township
By Amy Newsom
Correspondent
The Sibley County Board,
during its recent regular
meeting, gave Tri-County
Solid Waste Director Al
Christensen the go ahead to
carry out a rural recycling
pilot project in Faxon Township.
Waste Management will
provide three, six-yard dumpsters off County Road 6
(Scenic Byway Road) north
of the county gravel pit in
Faxon Township. The recy-
cling dumpsters will be accessible to all Sibley County
residents.
Christensen considered a
couple different options for
recycling dumpsters and
found Waste Management to
be the best option. Christensen feels that smaller lidded dumpsters will discourage people from dropping off
large unwanted items like refrigerators and mattresses.
Public Works Director Tim
Becker also voiced concerns
over people dropping off tele-
visions and refrigerators stating that Public Works did not
want to be responsible to dispose of them. Christensen
stated that if someone left
something like a refrigerator
at the recycling center Waste
Management would remove it
for a fee of $55 per appliance.
County Commissioner Bill
Pinske asked that if this project is successful could they
add “additional ones in other
areas of the county?” Christensen said yes, it’s up to the
townships, but pointed out
that 50 to 60 percent of residents already have garbage
and recycling services.
The project will be funded
from Environmental Services
solid waste fund and Al
Christensen and Commissioner Bobbie Harder will educate residents about the recycling program. Christensen would like to try the
program for one year and
then decide if it is doable.

311 - An Ordinance Amending the Arlington Zoning Ordiance relating to Outdoor Storage.

Nuesse and Galen Wills all voted in favor of the motion.

members believed the amended ordinance was still too
restrictive for citizens.

Compost site will close Jan. 2
By Kurt Menk
Editor
The compost site in Arlington will close for the season
on Monday, Jan. 2 until the
spring thaw, according to
City Administrator Liza Donabauer.
In the meantime, if a resident needs access to the com-
post they are welcome to contact the Arlington City Office
and a staff member can meet
the resident on-site.
The reason for the closure
is to prevent illegal dumping,
according to Donabauer.
“City staff and police have
found furniture, kitchen
garbage, mattresses and non-
compost items at the site, putting the city at risk of losing
its permit to operate a compost site,” said Donabauer.
The staff can be reached at
the City Office by calling
507-964-2378.

Jordan Knutson, 25, New
Auburn, was driving a Lexus
southbound on Highway 22
and attempted to pass a
southbound Sibley County
snowplow driven by Kevin
Weber, 62, Arlington, according to the report. Weber was
in the process of making a
left turn onto 320th Street
when Knutson attempted to
pass the snowplow using the
left oncoming traffic lane.
Knutson was transported
by ambulance to the hospital,
according to the report.
Weber was not injured.

Libraries Update
Julie Trebelhorn, chair of
the Traverse des Sioux Regional Library Board and
member of the Sibley County
Library Board, presented the
annual Sibley County Library
Board update to County
Commissioners.
Trebelhorn thanked the
County Commissioners for
their support, and felt that a
truer county library system is
about to be established with
all employees now being paid
under the county library system instead of some employees being paid by the county
and some employees being
paid by the cities.
County Commissioner Jim
Swanson asked about ordering books from other libraries. Trebelhorn said that
it is fairly even, “sometimes
we request more and sometimes we send out more.”
Swanson asked if RS Fiber
could help with ordering
books through Traverse de
Sioux. Trebelhorn said probably not because RS Fiber
doesn’t “cover the entire region.”
Trebelhorn stated that Sibley County library use is
higher than average, and that
the national average of library use is trending down.
She also stated that the number of new titles available at
libraries in Sibley County is
comparable to other larger
areas such as St. Peter.
Trebelhorn stated that the
use of electronic books is up
in Sibley County, but also
pointed out a concern about
electronic books. Unlike
hard copies, electronic books
have a short shelf life. They
can disappear from the catalog after 24 months.

Qualey of Novel Energy Solutions/Minnesota Community Solar presented the Sibley
County Board with options
on participating in a solar
garden during its recent regular meeting.
Sibley County could sign
up to be part of the solar garden in Hector. The county
could contract for 40 percent
of the garden. The county
would pay a monthly subscription to Novel Energy to
be in the solar garden with
two percent rate increases
each year. If Xcel Energy
rate increases are greater than
two percent, the county
would save the difference.
Sibley County could also

Snow and cold weather helps
some and hurts others
Our View: It’s Minnesota. Each year is different
While some people would be happy to go without snow and the
cold temperatures during the winter months, others are delighted
that there will be white stuff on the ground before Christmas this
year. That is something that has not happened in three years.
Snow and cold temperatures can be beneficial to many people in
Minnesota.
Some businesses depend on the cold and snowy winter weather.
It helps the sales of shovels, snowblowers, gloves, boots, ice melt
and other winter related items. Other businesses and individuals depend on the income from snow removal and car repairs.
Kids have the opportunity for ice skating, sledding and playing in
the snow, especially during their Christmas break from school. The
Arlington Enterprise has more photo opportunities during a winter
with snow and at least some cold weather.
Cities, counties and schools, however, can be hurt by the snow
and cold temperatures. Unlike the past few winters, cities, counties
and schools have been forced to use part of their budgets early for
snow removal this year. These government entities have also been
forced to crank up the heat in their buildings.
In addition, the snow and cold weather can cause unsafe driving
conditions, especially around the holiday. People have to warm up
their vehicles and scrape their windows. Residents have the fear of
walking outside in the cold weather and on slippery sidewalks. During the past two weekends, people have had to wake up early to
shovel or snowblow their driveways. The snow and frigid temperatures are also not kind to domestic and wild animals.
Minnesotans have experienced a variety of winters over the years.
That is the beauty of the Gopher state. Each year is different. The
weather can change in one forecast. It was 31 degrees below zero
last Sunday morning and 30 degrees above zero a couple days later.
Good for some and bad for others, there are still three-plus
months of winter left which just officially began on Wednesday,

Letter To The Editor
Help the president keep the ship on course
To The Editor,
First off I must tell you I have
been decimated by this year’s presidential election. I came of age when
president Kennedy was running for
election and later became president.
That was the highlight of my young
life. I absorbed everything he said
and tried to live up to his words the
rest of my life.
I enlisted in the Air force because
I believed and still do that we owe
our country not the country owed
me. When I came back to the U.S.
we were ordered to return home in
civilian clothes as to not attract attention. This was the lowest point in
my life up till then.
Tonight I watched Mrs. Obama
interviewed on TV. This classy lady
never once blasted anyone although
she and Barack weathered attacks
from the morning after the first election to today. She said we will not
take the low road and will instead
take the high road.
This had the same affect on me
that John F. Kennedy had on me 56
years ago. I am again back on track
after these many years and especially these past few months and hope
anyone who watched the first ray of
civility in months joins her and
Barack to help the incoming president to keep the ship on course.

Our Christmas perspective changes throughout life
By Glenn Mollette
I was saddened when I saw the report of a group of little children hiding in a basement in Aleppo, Syria.
Sadly this is where most of Aleppo's
remaining children are located. They
are holding on to life, hopefully another day.
Many of us grew up loving the
Santa Claus story and honestly I'm
still holding on just a little bit. I
don't have a big list for him. However, most of what I'm hoping for is really out of Santa's league.
Santa Claus is good for fun and
games. I asked Santa for some
games when I was a kid and received a Password game and a game
called Mystic Skull. Those were fun
games. I also asked Santa for a plastic bowling ball set. I got up on
Christmas morning very early and it
wasn't under the tree. My mother
went to the hall closet and pulled out
this big box and said, "Santa told me
to put it in here until you got up
from bed." I accepted that story as
only a six or seven year old would
do."
Christmas lists change with age.
What I hoped for at five became
very different throughout the years.
I had wish lists pertaining to career,
children and other aspirations.
Today I'm so very happy to simply

enjoy health, trips to the grocery
store and a warm house. Amazingly
what makes me happy today is far
more complicated than when I was
preparing my toy lists for Santa.
I once asked for a $29 white electric guitar for Christmas. My hard
working coalmining daddy and
mom were able to buy that for me. I
was so happy. It seemed like I had
just gotten everything in the world
for Christmas. A few days later one
of my relatives was visiting in our
home and he was admiring my
white electric guitar. He didn't make
a lot of money but admired my gift
and later commented that it was
hard to buy many Christmas gifts on
$20 a week. I felt a little bad about
my beautiful guitar and sad for him.
This was back in the day when decent money was $125 a week.
Looking back I can now see more
clearly that his perspective was that
of a struggling adult.
I enjoyed that feel of being a little
child. I didn't worry about healthcare. I didn't worry about having
food to eat or paying all the bills. I
didn't worry about sickness or life's
longevity. I was free to enjoy the
child's perspective of Christmas.
Today as adults we are hammered
with the harsh realities of life. We
deal with the daily grind of life that
includes all the pains of having
enough money and enough health to
enjoy Christmas. We have other
family members who we agonize
with and relate to in their struggles.
We also have national concerns.
We are blessed in America where so
much of what we enjoy is almost a
miracle every day. With all that we
see and hear about in Syria and so
many other troubled places in the
world surely to just sleep and live in
peace has to mean everything to all
of us. I think this is something we
grow into in America. The news
tonight about little children hiding in
a basement in Aleppo fearing for
their lives was heartbreaking. They
hold onto hope of their lives being
spared and maybe a better day.
However, a night of peace and rest
is almost inconceivable to them.
Whatever you have this Christmas
in America cherish and respect it.
Thank God for everything you have.
The perspective of everything we
have changes throughout life from a
five year old child to someone barely holding on to life in a nursing
home or a family huddled together
in a basement in Aleppo.

Despite mayor’s concerns, Gaylord City Council
stands firm on the hiring of city administrator
After hearing opposing
views on the matter, Gaylord’s City Council unanimously approved an employment agreement for new city
administrator Kim MooreSykes, according to an article
in the Gaylord Hub.
City Council members, by
a 3-1 vote last month, approved offering the city administrator position to
Moore-Sykes. The City
Council reconsidered MooreSykes, Sibley County’s
Human Resources Director,
after finalist Jeffrey McCormick,
Chief
of
Police/Emergency Management Director with the Cannon Falls Police Department,
declined the offer. City Coun-
cil member Jim Landaas, who
is the raw material warehouse/logistics manager at
Cambria, was also a finalist.
Prior to approving the employment agreement recently,
City Council members heard
opposing views from interim
City Administrator Rick
Almich and Mayor Don
Boeder.
Almich defended the recruitment process and said
Moore-Sykes had the highest
marks of any of the candidates interviewed.
Compared to the other finalists “(Moore-Sykes) has
the best skills set coming into
this situation,” Almich said.
“Yes, there are weaknesses,
but (Moore-Sykes) does bring
strengths to the position.”
Boeder believed the City
Council did not have enough
information before making a
decision and expressed concern about the question
process when candidates
were interviewed. He also felt
“the ball was dropped” when
the process transitioned from
pre-interviews to the City
Council.
“I think the whole process
was bad,” Boeder said.
“There are red flags and I’m
not comfortable with the hire.
This has been the most troubling for the council in my
four years as mayor.”
Almich said he respectfully
disagreed with the mayor. He
feels he never pressured the

Both Almich and Boeder
expressed concern about the
lack of discussion amongst
City Council members during
the hiring process. As a candidate, City Council member
Landass excused himself
from those discussions.
Council member Chad Muchow, who defended MooreSykes, said there was little
discussion because a motion

My Christmas Story to Santa
Editor’s Note: The following boys from Kid’s Kingdom
Daycare (owned by Chris
Pichelmann) wrote “My
Christmas Story to Santa.”
Santa Claus will come on
his sleigh. He will park on the
roof and bring my presents to
me under the tree. He will
bring me a baby gun. The
bullets will have fur on them
and be pointy like a needle. I
think I will get a chainsaw
too!
Jack will get a BB gun because he is ten now. He is
old enough! Jack is my
biggest brother. Will is bigger, but Jack is more older.
Will will get a BIG bow
with LOTS of arrows. He really likes chicken. Maybe he
could bring him some chickens. The elves can make
cages in the toy shop for
them so they don’t fly away
from Santa on the sleigh.
Ellie will get a puppy. A
REAL puppy because she is
nice. She is nice to me too
and she plays with me a lot.
I will leave butter cookies
out for Santa and some water.
The reindeer will drink water
and eat corn.
Louis Feterl
4 years old
Santa will open the door in
the garage. He will bring my
presents in Mommy’s bedroom.
He will bring me a chocolate chip cookie. A BIG
ONE!!!! I would like a yellow truck too. Yellow is my
favorite! My favorite new toy
at daycare is the red motorcycle. Can he bring me a motorcycle too? Please!
He will bring Arthur a fire
truck. It will be red and be
REALLY loud!
I think he would like to
share it with me. I will let
him play with my toys too.
Mommy and Daddy will
get a cake. Santa only brings
presents if you are little. My
mommy and daddy are not
little anymore. My Daddy has
an old car. Santa will not
bring him a new car. He does
not need a new car. He just
needs his old car.
I will leave carrots for the
reindeer and Rudolph will get
a pickle. Santa will eat oatmeal squares and milk.
Henry Hokenson
2 years old…almost 3!
Santa will drive his sleigh
at the North Pole and I am
coming with him!!!! It will
be REALLY COLD so I will
have to wear my boots,
Chris!
He will bring me some
presents. A yellow truck like
Henry’s and a BIG M&M
cookie. Do you think he can
bring me some paper, colors
and painting stuff too?
I am going potty in the toilet now! I get a M&M sticker
on my chart when I go. Chris
gives me a M&M to eat after
I wash my hands! We hide
the M&Ms in the bathroom
away from Bob. Don’t tell
him where they are. HE
WILL EAT THEM ALL
GONE!
Tucker is my brother. I
think he might like a shovel
with some snow. He will
scoop the snow with me. We
will make a HUGE PILE as
high as my daddy!!! Is my
daddy bigger than “Big
Daddy Mike?” Lou said his
daddy is bigger than my
daddy.
I will leave the reindeer
corn on the cob and water.
Santa will get M&M cookies
and milk. I will share my
cookies with him because
“sharing is caring.” He will
say “Thank You”.
Trey Husfeldt
2 ½ years old
I am a boy that smiles a lot.
I like to snuggle and read
books. Books with animals
are my favorite at daycare.
I
REALLY
like
“Baby”(Arthur). I can’t wait
to see him and I give him a
hug when he comes to daycare. I am a good helper in
the kitchen and my job is to
see that Bella the boxer dog
gets a doggy bone treat. I am
gentle with her. I sit on her
when I look at books and she
loves me.
I am talking a lot now!
Some of my favorite words at
daycare are BOB, Woo Woo
(Lou Lou), baby, Bella,
please and thank you. I love
to sing and learn new songs.
I even get to sing “Baby
Mine” with Chris when she
tucks me and Arthur in at
nap.
I would like Santa to bring
me some blocks. I am up to
stacking five blocks high
now! I smile when they fall
down. I would love a few
new books and music tapes
too please.
I will leave Santa a cookie
AND one for my brother Trey
too!
Tucker Husfeldt
1 ½ years old
I can hold my bottle all by
myself now! I cannot say any
words yet.
MY favorite toys are
BALLS!!!!! The ball that has
eyes, ears and lights up is my
favorite! It is yellow.
I like to eat MUSH! Mush
that has fruit in and vegetables. I do not have very many
teeth. As of today, we counted three uppers and two
downers! I like star treats at
snack. I’m not too sure about
my big boy sip cup yet. I
throw it on the floor!
I’m starting to walk already!!!. I can stand up and
play by the daycare table like
the big boys! Lou watched
me walk and he says that I
walked five steps! Everyone
clapped. I smiled.
I really like dumping out
baskets of toys and I if I am
fast enough, I knock toys
down that my big buddies are
playing with.
Santa should bring me
baby toys and balls. Maybe,
more teeth so I wouldn’t have
to eat mush all the time
too!!!!

The Sibley East Wolverine football team recently presented a $1,444.43 check to the
Sibley County Relay For Life. The football
team raised the funds by selling hooded
sweatshirts during its annual Pink Out Night
this past fall. The football team has raised
over $3,000 for the Relay For Life during the
past four years. The Sibley East Wolverines
will now be recognized as a corporate sponsor
during the Relay For Life event next June.

Winter truck load increases begin Dec. 22 for
central, metro, south and southeast frost zones
Winter truck load increases
will begin Thursday, Dec. 22,
on unrestricted highways in
the central, metro, south and
southeast frost zones, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation. Winter load increases are already
in effect for the north and
north central frost zones.
Vehicles will be allowed to
operate up to 10 percent over
the standard legal maximum
loads on unrestricted highways during the winter load
increase period. However,
trucks must comply with current registration weight laws
and not exceed registered
gross weight tolerances.
Drivers should check with
local agencies before increasing any weights on city,
county and township routes.
The sign erected on the roadway governs the load limit in
effect. A winter weight in-
crease permit is required to
take advantage of the 10 percent weight increase on interstate highways only; a permit
is not required for state trunk
highways.
For questions about over
legal weight/size “heavy
haul”
trucking,
call
MnDOT’s Freight and Commercial Vehicle Operations Oversize/Weight Permits,
651-296-6000 or email:
ofcvopermits.dot@state.mn.u
s.
For questions about enforcement call the Minnesota
Department of Public Safety State Patrol - Commercial
Vehicle Enforcement; 651405-6196 (select option 3,
option 3).
The start and end dates for
winter load increases are
based on how weather is affecting roadway strength.
These dates are established
by monitoring roadway
strength as weather conditions change. The end date
for winter load increases is
variable and drivers should
check for updates throughout
the year. Vehicle operators
are required to check with
MnDOT for the exact start
and end dates.
All changes are made with
a minimum three-day notice.
For the most current information, go to MnDOT’s automated 24-hour message center at 800-723-6543 for the
U.S. and Canada, or locally at
651-366-5400 for the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. This
information is also published
on the MnDOT seasonal load
limits
website
at
mndot.gov/seasonal-loads.
For updated road condition
information, call 511 or visit
www.511mn.org.

MnDOT adds new features to its
511 traveler information system
Motorists using the Minnesota Department of Transportation’s 511 traveler information system this winter
have several new features to
help them know what the
state’s road conditions are before they venture out on the
roadways.
“Overall, the 511 traveler
information system is getting
better each year and more
people are using it,” said
Kelly Braunig, 511 program
manager. “These new features will help the traveling
public make good decisions
about winter travel.”
She said one million more
motorists used the mobile app
from the 2014-15 to the
2015-16 winter seasons.
There were also significant
increases in the number of
users on the truckers’ and
full-featured web pages.
Some of the new features
this winter are:
Personalize Your 511 –
Motorists can enter up to 20
routes they travel to see
where incidents, such as
crashes or construction, are
located. Users can also click
on a specific incident to see a
camera view. This is available on the full-featured and
truckers’ pages.
Smart 511 – This is the
same as Personalize Your
511, but for a smartphone.
Motorists sign up online and
then enter their phone number to receive information.
Citizen Reporting – Motorists can submit driving
conditions to the 511 system
along a saved route. To use
this function, users have to
have an account through the
“Personalize Your 511” feature. Users take a short online
course to get registered. Motorists are advised to report
driving conditions after they
reach their destination. This
is available on the full- featured site, but soon will also
be on the truckers’ site.
Tell Me – Motorists receive
hands-free and eyes-free
audio notifications on their
smartphones about traffic
conditions. Users download
and open the app before they
start driving. The feature uses
motorists’ GPS information.
Traffic Delay – On the traf-
fic map, there is now an orange glow around an icon
when there is a traffic delay
due to a crash, construction
or other traffic-slowing incidents. When users click on
the orange glow, information
will be provided on delays,
travel times and direction of
the delay. This is currently
available only for interstate
driving and shows a delay
within two miles in each direction of an incident. This
feature is on the truckers’ and
full-featured sites.
Road Weather Information
System Alert – On the fullfeatured and truckers’ sites,
motorists will see a red triangle over a weather station
icon when weather conditions
such as fog, high winds, rain,
ice and snow exist.
Most of the features are
beneficial for winter driving,
but they can also be used
year-round.
Braunig encouraged people
to go to www.511mn.org to
check out how the site and
features work. The mobile
device app is free to download.
