By Rich Glennie and Lee Ostrom of The Chronicle staff Clarissa Ober scored 23 points and grabbed 18 rebounds, leading Glencoe-Silver Lake to its first win of the season, a 46-37 decision over visiting Mayer Lutheran last Thursday evening. The Panthers had dropped their first six starts, including 58-54 to Belle Plaine on Dec. 4. On Dec. 18, Mayer Lutheran downed Belle Plaine, 50-34. But GSL was not to be turned back again. Mayer Lutheran to six first-half points; then starting the second half with a 10-2 run. With 12:34 to go, GSL led 29-8. When the Crusaders finally got some shots to drop, and closed to within six (40-34) with 79 seconds remaining, the Panthers knocked down six (of 10) pressure free throws to seal the deal. Afterward, the Panthers were elated. “It felt good,” coach Ober said. He noted that assistant Dave Wendlandt told the girls: “What better way to celebrate Christmas than by giving yourselves your first win.” From the start, GSL threw a fullcourt trap at the Crusaders, from which it dropped back into either a 1-2-2 zone or a 2-3 zone. The game plan worked. Indeed, Mayer Lutheran did not tally a point during one 12-minute stretch of the first half. Nico Schmidt finally scored a basket for the Crusaders with 2:43 left in the half to break the long drought. But GSL added baskets by Taylor Breidenbach, on a feed from Ober, and eighth-grade point guard Madison Monahan, whose nice drive down the lane with two seconds left

Panthers surprise Rocori
GSL boys improve home record to 3-0
By Lee Ostrom Sports Editor he Glencoe-Silver Lake boys’ basketball team remains unbeaten on its home court, following last Friday’s 67-60 victory over Class AAA state power Rocori. The Spartans, who arrived in Glencoe with a 3-0 mark and a sixthin-state ranking, were outrun 14-3 for starters, trailed by as many as 14 points on a couple of first-half occasions, and went to intermission down 31-21. When they rallied back to 45 apiece — behind 6-5 senior Jonah Eisenschenk, a rugged inside-outside threat with touch — GSL refused to buckle. Instead, the Panthers
T
outscored Rocori 22-15 during the final 6 minutes, 50 seconds. Seniors Ethan Maass and Reed Dunbar led GSL with 24 points and 16, respectively, and those two took the big shots and made the big shots down the stretch. However, it was Travis Rothstein, another Panther 12th-grader, who may have removed the last rays of belief from the Spartans. With only 36 seconds to go, the steady guard stuck two free throws for a 65-60 bulge. Indeed, Rocori turned the ball over seconds later; then after one free throw by Keaton Anderson, it turned the ball over again. “I think we play better on our home court,” senior Brandon Ebert said. “When the crowd really gets

The moving traffic is going in different directions on the Rocori end of the court. Pictured are Zach Templin of the Spartans and Travis into it, we seem to respond.” Maass agreed. “The more support we get, the better,” he said.
Rothstein (5) and Reed Dunbar of GSL. The Panthers won, 67-60.
Panther seniors Reed Dunbar and Trenton Draeger stretched out prior to last Friday’s non-
conference clash with Rocori.
About the fast start, Maass said GSL’s game plan called for playing active defense (the Panthers were charted for 13 steals) and pushing the ball forward at every opportunity. Ebert thought the Panthers might have “shocked” their highly regarded guests. Head coach Robb DeCorsey did not think the Panthers did anything terribly complicated. “They bust their butts,” he said about his boys. “That’s how they win games.” *** At 45-45, the 6-4 Dunbar hit a 17footer from the side. On GSL’s next possession, Maass pushed the pace; then finished by getting down a floater. GSL, 49-45. After an exchange of deuces by Eisenschenk (17 tallies overall) and Dunbar, guard Mac Mueller posted a traditional three-point play from inside, which Anderson matched on the run with an assist from Maass. GSL, 55-50 — 4:19 to go. The teams continued to go back and forth. Rocori’s Zach Templin and GSL’s Trenton Draeger traded deuces after collecting in-close
feeds. After Templin scored again, Maass and Eisenschenk exchanged triples. GSL, 60-57. With 1:30 remaining, Rothstein — on a fast-breaking pass from Maass — converted, making the count 6257. Dunbar’s one free throw lifted GSL’s lead to six, but Mueller knocked down a triple with 58 seconds remaining. Rothstein nailed his two free throws 12 seconds later. Rocori, meanwhile, would not score again. *** — Rocori’s previous games were wins over St. Cloud Tech, Willmar and Sauk Rapids-Rice. — GSL made 26 of 55 shots from the field, 47 percent. Maass was 10for-22, including four triples. Dunbar was 6-for-10 from the floor and 4for-5 from the line. Rocori shooters were 7-for-24 in the first half, 17-for-26 in the second half and shot 48 percent for the game. Rebounds went to GSL, 27-25. In-

Short-handed wrestling team tumbles twice
By Lee Ostrom Sports Editor What a difference one week can make. On Thursday, Dec. 13, at Litchfield, the 2012-13 GSL/Lester Prairie wrestlers celebrated being the first Panther squad since 2007 to win dual meets over Dassel-Cokato (42-30) and Litchfield (5314). On Thursday, Dec. 20, at Hutchinson, the 2012-13 Panthers hoped to knock off two more Wright County Conference wrestling powers — namely New London-Spicer and Annandale/Maple Lake. But it didn’t happen. Instead, several Panthers came down with colds, while another sat out because of concussion symptoms from a Dec. 15 match. Indeed, lineup regulars Dalton Clouse, Michael Donnay and Nate Tesch did not wrestle at the Hutchinson doubledual. Same with at least four other Panthers. As a result, GSL/LP forfeited five weights in a 66-9 loss to New London-Spicer; then six weights in a 60-8 loss to Annandale/Maple Lake. On top of that, last GSL/LP unbeaten Mitchell Hartwig is unbeaten no longer. Jordan Hanan of Annandale/ML scored a last-seconds escape to edge Hartwig, 3-2, at 152 pounds.

gave the Panthers a 19-6 halftime lead. GSL scored the first six points to open the second half on baskets by Briedenbach and Ober and a pair of free throws by Monahan. At the same time, coach Ober had switched defenses to a manto-man, which had Mayer Lutheran struggling some more. The Panthers led, 25-6. With a blowout imminent, Mayer Lutheran switched to a full-court press, which shook loose a few GSL turnovers. From a 29-8 deficit, the Crusaders scored 10 of the next 12 points to make it 3118 with 7:05 left to play. Schmidt and Christina Bruggman scored four each for Mayer Lutheran in that stretch. A nice baseline drive by GSL’s Steph Klockmann snapped GSL’s scoring drought, but the Crusdaders roared back with the next five points to creep to within 3323 with 4:33 left. Long-range shooting by Shelby Sicheneder gave the Crusaders a big boost. Klockmann and Sicheneder traded baskets before a deuce by Ober put GSL up 37-25. Mayer Lutheran’s Breena Larsen then hit a three-pointer to pull the Crusaders to within 37-28 with 3:44 remaining. When Josie Peters nailed another long three-pointer, Mayer Lutheran was within 38-32. But an offensive rebound and basket by Ober seemed to shake the Panthers out of their doldrums. With time running out, Mayer Lutheran was forced to foul.

2012 U of M crop varietal trials bulletin now available
A comprehensive comparison of most crop varieties grown in Minnesota is now available in print and electronic forms. Minnesota Varietal Trials 2013, published by the Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Station, provides the results of the 2012 University of Minnesota evaluation of more than 1,000 individual entries of plant varieties. Multiple trials throughout the state compared how varieties performed in the wide range of soil types and climatic conditions found in Minnesota. This is hands-on production agriculture information that farmers can take to the field and use. Growers can use this data to make informed choices on which varieties will perform well in their fields. The varieties tested are from both private and public breeding programs and include University of Minnesota developed forage, grain, and oilseed crop varieties. Plant varieties tested include alfalfa, barley, birdsfoot trefoil, corn grain, corn silage, oat, canola, soybeans, spring wheat and winter wheat. The test plots are grown at the University’s Research and Outreach Centers and also in field research plots on privately-owned farms. The replicated trials provide Minnesota farmers with objective evaluations of how plant varieties perform in various conditions. University researchers, Extension educators, USDA scientists and graduate students conducted the trials. The complete results of the variety trials are available on the Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Station website: http://www.maes.umn.edu. Limited print copies will be available from the University of Minnesota Extension Store or call 1-800-876-8636. Limited print copies are also available free from the University of Minnesota Sibley County Extension office located in Gaylord, the McLeod County Extension office in Hutchinson and the Meeker County Extension office in Litchfield.

2 more charges filed against Bryan Koepp
The criminal complaint against former Glencoe businessman Bryan Koepp was amended Dec. 17 to add two more felony counts of theft, according to court documents. Koepp now faces eight felony charges for alleging swindling several victims by obtaining loans from them, with promises to repay them from a loan for which he was allegedly applying for through the federal government. The latest two charges contend that between December 2008 and April 2009, Koepp allegedly obtained a total of $55,000 from two other parties — $19,000 from one of the parties and $36,000 from the other. Koepp was already facing six felony charges alleging that he falsely obtained a total of $333,500 from 13 separate individuals. With the new charges, the amount is now $388,500 total. Koepp had been slated to appear at an omnibus hearing Dec. 17, but with the filing of the new charges, the hearing was changed to a Rule 8 hearing. According to Minnesota Court Rules, a Rule 8 hearing advises a defendant of the charges, informs him or her of legal rights and allows them to enter a plea of guilty. Only a guilty plea can be entered at a Rule 8 hearing. If the defendant pleads guilty, the court case moves into the pre-sentencing and sentencing phase. If the defendant does not wish to plead guilty, the arraignment is continued to an omnibus or evidentiary hearing. An omnibus hearing determines the admissability of evidence, and whether there is probable cause to continue proceedings to a jury trial, as well as outlines other court procedures that may apply to the case. A new omnibus hearing has been set for Jan. 23, and a jury trial has been set for April 4. Each felony charges carries a potential penalty of 20 years in prison and/or a $100,000 fine. Koepp is free on his own recognizance, with the stipulations that he have no contact with his alleged victims, that he report any address changes to the court, and that he does not leave the state without court approval.
