GSL alumnus Cody Chris-
tensen helped the UMD
Fighting Penguins bring
home their second D II Na-
tional Championship on
Dec. 6 in Greenville, S.C.
Kelly Arnold broke the
school record in the 100-
meter dash on April 22
with a time of 12.28, shat-
tering the previous record
of 12.5 set in 1988.
Dietrich Holzäepfel of Seehausen, Germany, smiles next
to his long-time friend Barbara Behrens of Glencoe,
whose house on the south side of town has served as
Holzäepfel’s destination for four cross-country U.S. bicy-
cle tours. Holzäepfel’s journey took 38 days, arriving at
Behrens’ house in May after biking about 2,600 miles.
Capping off his Glencoe-Silver Lake/Lester Prairie
wrestling career, senior captain Jacob Jewett placed fifth
at 113 pounds by defeating Nate Carlson of
Annandale/Maple Lake 8-1. He moved up one spot from
his previous season when he placed sixth at 106. Jewett
was 27-8 in his final year, and finished 115-34 overall.

For the first time in Panther tennis history, Piper Davis (left) and
Rachel Rusten took the podium at the Class A state tournament.
The duo finished fifth with a two-set victory over Chessa Jones
and Emma Dietrich of East Grand Forks, winning the first 6-0,
and the second 6-4 at the Reed-Sweatt Tennis Center on Oct. 24.

Ranked in the top five at the beginning of the season in
Class A, the Glencoe-Silver Lake boys’ cross country
team showed its worth when it took third place at the
state cross country meet at St. Olaf College back on
Nov. 1. Pictured in order of their places at state are: Jac
Chelman, 10th-16:12; Brandon Richter, 30th-16:46; Gar-
rett Ober, 58th-17:08; Michael Schaefer, 65th-17:11; Isiah
Herout, 73rd-17:19; Austin Schroepfer, 77th-17:21; and
Garret Ardolf, 83rd-17:23. The Panthers scored 117 team
points in a very close finish with Mora (1st, 104), and
Martin County West (2nd, 108). There were only three
meets in which the boys didn’t claim first place in 2014.

The Panther football team made a return to the
Class AAA state semifinals for the first time since
2009, and finished at the top of Section 2 for the
second consecutive year in 2014. Glencoe-Silver
Lake finished with a 9-4 record after starting out 1-3
— also a first since 2004. The Panthers eventually
fell to New London-Spicer in the state semifinals
13-12, bringing an end to the season and quarter-
back Keaton Anderson’s four-year reign at the helm
of the GSL offense.

Not only did the Glencoe-silver Lake baseball team
bring home the third-place trophy at the Class AA
state tournament in June, but months later, most of
the same members made history as a part of the Plato
641 Legion team by winning the Great Plains Division
II championship in Millbank, S.D., in August. Longtime
coach Dean Schwirtz skippered his high school team
to an 18-5 record, and handed over Post 641 to Matt
Odegaard, who saw his players continue to excel.
Teddy Petersen was named the tournament’s MVP, as
he went 13-17 at the plate with 10 runs.

Maddie Monahan broke the school record for assists on
Dec. 4 when the Glencoe-Silver Lake Panther girls’ bas-
ketball team defeated Willmar 38-33. Monahan totaled
three assists on the evening, setting the record at 307
after it stood at 305 for years.

After doling out loss after
loss to opponents at or below
its level, the Panther boys’ bas-
ketball team lost its first set of
consecutive games at the Tartan
Holiday Tournament on Dec.
27 and Dec. 29.
Entering the tourney on a
five-game win streak, Glencoe-
Silver Lake couldn’t match the
scoring of Forest Lake (Class
4A), losing 69-58 Saturday, be-
fore wilting under the defensive
pressure of Chisago Lakes (3A)
two days later, 58-35.
While he gave credit to the
teams GSL played against,
Head Coach Robb DeCorsey
commented that the games
were lost because of turnovers,
and that his Panthers’ chemistry
is off.
“We turn the ball over too
much,” a frustrated DeCorsey
said Tuesday morning with
Monday’s loss still fresh on his
mind. “I swear we’ve turned it
over more times in the last two
games than in the first six
games combined.
“We don’t have chemistry
because they don’t pass enough
and take care of the ball,” he
added later. “We can’t win
when the ball is tossed all over
the place.”
In a back-and-forth battle,
GSL hung with Forest Lake
until midway through the final
half, when the Rangers’ Noah
Alm and Connor Knutson took
over the game.
Alm sniped from outside all
afternoon to the tune of 24
points with six three-pointers,
and Knutson complemented
him with 18 of his own, with
half of his damage done at the
charity stripe (nine for 13).
Momentum completely
swung in the Rangers’ favor
with seven minutes remaining,
when Alm made his sixth three
that gave Forest Lake a four-
point advantage. The Rangers
then expanded that lead to 58-
51, and slowed the tempo of the
game down, forcing GSL to
trap, which exposed scoring
lanes.
Keaton Anderson (24) and
Garrett Ober (18) combined for
42 of GSL’s 58 points. Ander-
son tried to keep the Rangers
outside of the paint with four
treys and pull-up jumpers just
inside the arc, while Ober pre-
dominantly pulled the trigger
from his 17-foot sweet spot.
The consolation bracket did-
n’t get any easier on Monday,
as Chisago Lakes only allowed
38 Panther points – GSL’s low-
est score since falling to
Bloomington Jefferson 68-36
in the second game of the sea-
son a year ago. Not a single
Panther scored double digits in
the loss, while three of Chisago
Lakes’ cagers accomplished
that feat.
Anderson was held to six –
his lowest of the season – and
Ober was blanked by the Wild-
cats, as Jacob Popelka led the
team with 10 points
Teddy Petersen had eight
points – all but two of them
coming from the free-throw
line, where the junior point
guard went six for eight.
GSL played again on Tues-
day against Prairie Seeds Acad-
emy for seventh place.
After Tuesday’s game, the
Panthers are off until Tuesday,
Jan. 6, when they hit the road
for Hutchinson to take on the 5-
2 Tigers.

A scrappy game took place between the Glencoe-Silver
Lake Panthers and the Forest Lake Rangers during the
Tartan Holiday tournament on Saturday, Dec. 27. Action
is from the second half, as Jacob Popelka (facing) and
Garrett Ober (10) fight for the ball on the floor with For-
est Lake’s Brent Kinder.
It’s been four months shy
of two years since I came to
The McLeod County Chroni-
cle, and with the slightest bit
of trepidation, I have to in-
form readers my time as
sports editor has come to an
end.
I’ve accepted a position
with Wright-Hennepin Elec-
tric in Rockford, Minn., as a
communications specialist,
starting Jan. 5, leaving smack
dab in the middle of the win-
ter sports season.
While I could easily rant on
the angers, difficulties and
stresses faced at this job, it
would serve no one any good.
Instead, I choose to focus on
the fun I’ve had in my time
spent since returning to my
native land.
Covering Glencoe-Silver
Lake High School athletics
has been a blast, as I’ve got-
ten to know the athletes,
coaches and parents on a
deeper level.
I donned some of the same
uniforms and played for some
of the same signal callers be-
fore I graduated from GSL in
2005, and coming back as the
sports editor afforded me
unique glimpses of all the
athletics I never got to see as
a participant or spectator.
The insight and quotes
coaches like Robb DeCorsey,
Zach Otto-Fisher, Lance
Wurm and Dean Schwirtz
have given me in my seasons
here have been a staple to-
ward my enjoyment of this
position. That’s not to slight
the other coaches I’ve worked
with, because I’ve built rela-
tionships with every one of
you, and I thank you for all
that you’ve done to help me,
and our conversations have
always been terrific.
But interviewing and inter-
acting with the athletes is
probably the best thing about
this job, as the kids have
come to accept and welcome
me as part of their activities –
shouting “Camera boy!” and
other nicknames when I ar-
rive on scene, giving me fist
bumps, high fives, hand-
shakes and pats on the back
when you’re caught up in the
same moment they’re in.
It’s also been special, as
I’ve played a pivotal part in
capturing some of their best
and worst moments. While
being in the midst of the for-
mer is more enjoyable, some
of the best and most powerful
photos I’ve taken have been
after a heart-wrenching loss.
And I’d just like to remind
readers that those photos
were not meant to bring the
athletes down, but to tell the
story of what happened.
I knew coming into this I’d
have a blast with high school
sports, but I’d have to say the
biggest surprise for me was
the passion I developed for
amateur baseball while cover-
ing the Brownton Bruins,
Glencoe Brewers and Plato
Blue Jays.
I’ve never been a big fan of
Major League Baseball, or re-
ally any level outside of high
school after I stopped playing
back in 2003. And while it
can still be one of the most
boring sports to cover at
times, the characters on each
team, and the jabbing before,
during and after games made
it easier to head to a ballpark
on a Saturday or Sunday af-
ternoon.
One of the things I’ll miss
most of all is the atmosphere
in the office. I’ve grown close
to all my coworkers, and had
a lot of fun in the process.
The fact that my senior pho-
tos from high school are plas-
tered across the back room
walls with fake mustaches
and hairdos can attest to that.
I want to sincerely thank all
of you who have been patient,
understanding and helpful in
my time here.
My new job won’t have
nearly as hectic a schedule as
I’ve been accustomed to, and
I plan to make it out to some
sporting events yet before I
end up moving closer to my
new location.
I’m excited for a new expe-
rience, but as Richard
Ashcroft of “The Verve” said,
“It’s a bittersweet symphony,
this life.”
This chapter of my life is
coming to a close, and with-
out a doubt I’ll look back
with a fond nostalgia of all
that it entailed.

Up north where the cold air
seems colder, Zach Otto-
Fisher’s Panther girls’ basket-
ball team found some success
at the Pequot Lakes Holiday
tournament,
The first day of action was
Monday, Dec. 29, when
Glencoe-Silver Lake played
its first game in a week
against the hosting Patriots.
Maddie Monahan and compa-
ny couldn’t come away with
a win, falling 48-46 before
taking home the consolation
trophy with a 76-71 win over
Roseau the following day.
The Panthers outscored Pe-
quot by two points in the sec-
ond half, but came into the
break trailing 23-19.
Maddie Monahan scored
12 of her 17 points in the
final 18 minutes, helping to
spark GSL’s run, but ulti-
mately couldn’t close the gap.
Zoe Christensen and
Rachael Popp each had eight
points, while Molli Cacka
chipped in six, and Keisha
Prafke five. Maddy Kalen-
berg rounded out the scoring
with one field goal for two
points.
Pequot Lake’s Haley
Wiebolt led the Patriots with
17 points of her own, but it
was 11 points from Catie
Ryan that proved to be the
difference maker.
Barely missing out on the
championship game meant
the Panthers had to face the
Roseau Rams, which hadn’t
lost a single game until run-
ning into the Crookston Pi-
rates at the tournament the
day before.
Both teams were upset
after losing games the previ-
ous day, and a back-and-forth
scrap ensued.
This time, the Monahan
sisters made sure they came
out on top, as Maddie and
Mac combined for 49 points.
Maddie Monahan scored
29 from her point guard posi-
tion, while her little sister
Mac kept the Rams off bal-
ance with 20 of her own.
Popp was relatively quiet
until the closing moments of
the first half, when she hit a
pair of three-pointers, making
the Rams have to account for
her in the second half.
Mac put the game away
when she got loose on a
breakaway layup and got an
intentional foul called as she
was pushed from behind. The
four-point play put the Pan-
thers up by six with 30 sec-
onds remaining.
GSL is off until Monday,
Jan. 5, when Mayer Lutheran
visits Glencoe. The Sibley
East Wolverines come to
town one day later.
The Panthers then travel to
Minnehaha Academy on
Tuesday, Jan. 13.

Does Christmas get old?
C
hristmas Day has passed. Are you tired? The commercialization of this holiday can have that effect on us. By the time we
get to Christmas, we are ready to be done with it.
Much like a commercialized Christmas, enslavement to sn gets old really fast. That tempting master never satisfies. he only
takes. And in returen for a lifetime of service, the pension is death.
But an the real Christmas celebration ever grow old? Christmas reveals God’s base of operations in his campaign against sin
and death. It waas a campaign into wich he sent his Son to fight victoriously from the cradle to the cross. As a result, you are no
longer a slave to sin. Sin may badger you. Sin may threaten you. However, when sin comes knocking, you don’t have to an-
swer. Sin has no authority over you life.
Through faith in Jesus, you have a new, life-giving master. He has made you into a new creation. He gives you the freedom to
be who you were created to be. He created you to be healthy in holiness, not sick in sin.
Many may be acting as if Christmas is over. Traditionally, however, the 12 days of Christmas were celebrated from Dec. 25
through Jan. 5. And really, the celebrating lasts throughout the year.
The gift which we receive from God, wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger, is a gift that always amazes. For when we were
at our worst, God gave us His best. And no matter how long we’ve had it, God’s gift of a Savior, Jesus Christ, never gets old.
For His salvation outweighs our sin; His rescue ends our rebellion and gives us life.
“But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the
result is eternal life.” – Romans 6:22
“For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and you have been given fullness in Christ, who is the head
over every power and authority.” – Colossians 2:9-10
