Silver Lake’s 71-47 defeat of Mound
Westonka on Tuesday, Jan. 24.
By Tom Carothers

Riding high on a four-game
winning streak, the GlencoeSilver Lake girls’ basketball
team entered this week with a
12-7 overall record.
The streak also boosted the
Panthers into a second-place
tie in the Wright County Conference West with a 5-2 mark
in circuit play.
Boosted by a 72-57 win at
Annandale on Friday, Jan. 20,
GSL opened a four-game
home stand with a 99-70 defeat of Dassel-Cokato on
Monday, Jan. 23.
“We really built off that
first-ever win at Annandale,”
coach Jeff Monahan said.
As lopsided as that 29-point
win was, it was not even the
greatest score differential of
the week.
After thumping Mound Westonka 71-47 on Tuesday, Jan.
24, the Panthers obliterated
Rockford 80-43 to close out
the string on Friday, Jan. 27.
“We played really well
against Mound Westonka and
Dassel-Cokato,” Monahan
said. “Rockford is a little bit
beat up right now; it has been
a real tough stretch for them.”
The 37-point defeat of the
Rockets was GSL’s largest
margin since a 92-41 dismantling of LeSueur-Henderson in
the Panthers’ home opener on
Dec. 5.
With GSL scoring a total of
250 points last week, Panther
players filled the statsheets.
Guard McKenna Monahan
led the squad with 21 points
and five steals against DasselCokato, with guard Maddie
Monahan scoring 13 points
and forward Samantha Voigt
10 points.
Forward Mickalyn Frahm
hauled in a team-high six rebounds, with Maddie Monahan pacing the squad with
eight assists.
Against Mound Westonka,
guard Miah Monahan led the
way with 17 points, followed
by McKenna and Maddie
Monahan with 16 points
apiece and forward Kendra
Ziebarth chipping in nine
points.
Voigt’s seven rebounds
topped the squad, as did Maddie Monahan’s eight assists.
Miah and McKenna Monahan
tied for the team lead with
five steals each in the contest.
Maddie Monahan’s 23
points were tops against
Rockford, with McKenna
Monahan scoring 12 points
and Miah Monahan tallying
10 points.
Frahm and fellow forward
Kaitlyn Uecker recorded nine
points each. Voigt led the team
with seven rebounds, which
McKenna and Maddie Monahan had eight assists apiece to
lead the squad.

Panther gymnasts
earn win vs. Saints
By Tom Carothers
Sports Editor
The Glencoe-Silver Lake
gymnastics team claimed a
home victory last week with a
win over St. Peter before
falling in a dual meet at New
Prague.
A score of 120.375 earned
the Panthers a win against the
visiting Saints on Tuesday,
Jan. 24, with St. Peter mustering up a score of 118.600.
Gia Venier placed second in
the all-around with a score of
30.850, while Marissa Greeley took fourth with a 30.050.
GSL won all four events via
four separate competitors. Venier won the vault with an
8.625, with Alexis Bergstrom
taking first on the uneven bars
with a 7.3; Breana Templin
was first on the balance beam
with a 7.875, before Greeley’s
8.375 earned first in floor exercise.
Two nights later in New
Prague, the Panthers came up
on the short end of a 135.975119.700 decision.
Venier’s 30.775 was good
for second in the all-around,
followed by Greeley’s 30.15.
JV Update
The GSL junior varsity fell
to St. Peter 87.700-82.550.
Amber Orr and Kelsey Rae
finished 1-2 in the all-around
with respective scores of
23.150 and 18.550.
The Panther JV also fell

A 63-50 win at Mound Westonka
last week snapped a three-game losing streak for the Glencoe-Silver
Lake boys’ basketball team. However, the Panthers could only manage a
split for the week after losing 72-71
at Rockford.
GSL held a 44-36 halftime lead
against the Rockets on Friday, Jan.
27, but could not hang on in losing
by a single point. Forward Kyle
Christensen led all scorers with 26
points, with guards Luke Frahm and
Tyler Ehrke chipping in with 12 and
nine points, respectively.
The loss put a bit of a damper on
GSL’s 13-point win at Mound Westonka on Tuesday, Jan. 24. Individual
scorers were not available.
This week concludes the first run
through the Panthers’ Wright County
Conference West schedule. GSL
traveled to the circuit’s westernmost
outpost with a trip to New LondonSpicer on Tuesday, Jan. 31, after the
Chronicle went to press.
GSL returns home on Friday to
take on Dassel-Cokato, and then
takes a week off before beginning
the second trip through conference
play on Friday, Feb. 10, at Litchfield.
Entering this week, the Panthers
were 10-7 overall, but 1-4 against
their WCC West competitors.

Heavy workweek for GSL/LP wrestlers
By Tom Carothers
Sports Editor
In its busiest week in over a month,
the Glencoe-Silver Lake/Lester
Prairie wrestling team came up on the
unfortunate end of the scoresheet in a
trio of dual competitions last week.
On Wednesday, Jan. 25, the Panthers fell 58-21 to Dassel-Cokato.
GSL grapplers claimed four victories
on the evening, while having to forfeit five matches.
Tanner Chmielewski earned one of
GSL/LP’s three wins by fall after pinning the Chargers’ Ben Zobel at 120
pounds. Kole Polzin followed that pin
up with another against Kaden
Schmidt at 132.
The third such win came from Paul
Lemke at 285 after he pinned Blake
Snyder. At 220, Aaron Castillo gritted
out a 10-8 decision over Jack Zobel.
The Panthers were at Paynesville
the next night, falling 66-15 to the
Bulldogs. GSL/LP won three matches, while again offering up five forfeits.
Eric Williams scored a win by fall
over Paynesville’s Brett Mages at
113, with Polzin winning 5-2 over
Daltin Christinsen at 132.
Lemke finished up the competition
with his second win by fall in as
many nights after pinning Paityn
Fiecke at 285.
Last week finished off in a difficult
manner as GSL/LP fell 75-3 against
Scott West at Jordan on Saturday, Jan.
28.
Zach Voelz gave the Panthers an
early 3-0 lead with a 4-0 win against
Colton Bahr. However, the hosts won
the next 13 matches – six by forfeit –
to cruise to the overall victory.
GSL/LP is back in action this week
with road trips to Mound Westonka
on Thursday and Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted on Friday.

“It’s really good to see so
many girls contributing and
getting on the statsheet,”
Jeff Monahan said. “It’s really nice to see some scoring in the post as well, that
really helps expand things.”
The Panthers began the
second half of their conference schedule as New London-Spicer visited GSL on
Tuesday, Jan. 31, after the
Chronicle went to press.
The Wildcats beat the Panthers 77-53 on Jan. 6.
“The last time we played
New London-Spicer, it was
our third game of the week.
Add that up with a long bus
trip out there and I think we
just had some tired kids,”
Jeff Monahan said. “This
time around, we are ready
and the girls are really looking forward to it.”
Maddie Monahan, already the program’s alltime leading scorer, entered
the NL-S game just three
points short of 2,000 points
for her high school career.
“We were trying to get
her to 2,000 last week, but
just not quite there,” Jeff
Monahan said. “It’s really
quite an accomplishment
for her and I know her
teammates are pulling for
her to get there.”
GSL wraps up this week
with a trip to Dassel-Cokato
Thursday night before taking a well-earned eight-day
break from competition before hosting Litchfield on
Friday, Feb. 10.
“It’s going to be real nice
to get that break in there,”
Jeff Monahan said. “We can
rest up and heal up a bit as
well.”
With just seven games remaining until the end of the
regular season, coach Monahan said the Panthers will
be continuing to work on
their defense in the time between now and the playoffs.
“Defense, and the No. 1
thing is rebounding,” he
said. “Good things can happen when you rebound
well.”

Tips for pruning trees, shrubs
Source: Beth Berlin, University of Minnesota Extension, Stearns, Benton and
Morrison counties.
This winter has been a
swing of temperatures and
everything from well below
0°F to unseasonably warm
weather. Now that February
is in sight, it is time to consider pruning your trees and
shrubs. An old rule of thumb
was to prune in winter while
the plant was dormant; well,
for best results we need to be
a bit more specific than that.
When to prune depends on
the species, but for most, late
winter into early spring is the
best time to prune.
Pruning near the end of the
dormant season has several
advantages, including: limited time remaining before the
tree or shrub will begin its
spring growth and healing
process; avoiding certain diseases and pests, and providing easier sight and access
without deciduous foliage.
Oak wilt can be a devastating disease and continues to
spread throughout Minnesota
and, therefore, oak trees
should not be pruned during
April, May, or June. If an oak
tree is damaged or wounded
during this time period, it is
best to mask the cut with a
wound dressing material to
help minimize the attraction
of pests that may spread the
disease.
Fruit trees such as apples,
crabapples, mountain ash,
hawthorns, and cotoneaster
shrubs should be pruned in
February through early April.
This reduces the chance of
the bacterial disease fireblight and infection from occurring. Pruning in fall or
early winter may cause drying out and die-back at the
pruning sites.
Trees with sap will “bleed”
during late winter or early
spring pruning. Although it
may look alarming, this does
not cause harm to the tree.
Farm Notes
By Karen Johnson
One option with these types
of trees or shrubs such as
maples, boxelders, birch, and
walnut or butternut, is to
prune them after their leaves
are fully developed in late
spring or early summer.
However, never remove more
than one-quarter of the live
foliage.
Early spring blooming
trees and shrubs such as forsythia, flowering plum, lilac,
azalea,
chokeberry,
chokecherry and flowering
crab, should not be pruned in
the late winter or early
spring. Instead, these early
bloomers should be pruned
after they have finished
blooming. If they are pruned
at any other time, once the
flower buds are set, you will
be pruning off next spring’s
flowers.
Once you’ve determined
the best timing to prune your
trees or shrubs, it is important
to know how to properly
prune. First, it is critical to
have the proper tool for the
job, and ensure the pruner,
lopper, or saw is sharp.
Know the limitation of the
tool, and use the proper sized
pruner, or lopper, or instead
use a saw.
Second, determine what
branches should be pruned.
Consider on young trees to
remove: branch stubs, rubbing branches, water sprouts,
sucker growth, closely
spaced, and weak or narrow
crotched branches. On established trees, the three most
common types of pruning
are: crown thinning, selectively removing branches,
specifically the weak, in the
crown to promote air movement; Crown raising, removing the lower branches to
provide more clearance for
mowing, sidewalks, streets,
etc.; and crown reduction, removing some of the large
branches at the top of the tree
to reduce its height. This is
not topping the tree because
the branch is removed directly above the lateral branches.
This form of pruning should
only be done when absolutely
needed.
In regards to pruning
shrubs, up to one-third of the
oldest, damaged, thickest
stems or trunks should be
pruned right slightly above
the ground. This technique
will revitalize the plant and
encourage new growth from
the roots. Hedge pruning
needs to be done often. After
the hedge has reached the desired size, prune back the six
to eight inches of new
growth. This form of pruning
should be done in spring and
again in mid-summer to give
the hedge a dense and attractive appearance.
Remember that late winter
and early spring are the best
times to prune many of your
trees and shrubs. Do your research, have the proper tools,
and be careful. For more information on pruning visit
http://www.extension.umn.ed
u/garden/ and search for
“pruning.”

“[St. Paul wrote] I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow.” (1Corinthians 3:6)
C
an man be a co-worker with God? We are incapable of coming to faith in Jesus Christ by our own reason or strength.
Neither can we create faith in another person. As Scripture points out, it is the Holy Spirit who, through the Gospel,
kindles faith in cold hearts so Jesus is professed as the Savior. Human effort is totally ruled out.

Yet the faithful have work to do. Paul told his readers that he, as the pioneer missionary, sowed the seed of God’s Word. After
him others, like Apollos, did the irrigating. Christ called them to this work. Paul, as he did for the Corinthians, clarifies for us
teachings of the Bible, thus helping us to distinguish between sin and grace, law and gospel. But all the while it was God who
made the seed of faith grow into a harvest of faithful service.
