By Lee Ostrom Sports Editor The Glencoe-Silver Lake/Lester Prairie wrestlers went to Hutchinson last Thursday, hoping to spring an upset on the Wright County Conference champions. The setup was the quarterfinals of the Section 2 (Class AA) team tournament, for which Hutch was the fourth seed and GSL/LP the fifth. Sure enough, the Panthers started strong, tallying the dual’s first 10 points on a win by fall by Jacob Jewett at 106 and a major decision by Aaron Donnay at 113. Neither was a surprise. Any sort of a GSL/LP victory formula had to include a great deal of success by its lighter weights — starting with Jewett and the Donnays, Aaron and 120pounder Michael. So, Hutchinson scored a signifi***

GSL/LP head coach Lance Wurm tries to inspire his boys prior to their Section 2 (Class AA) quarterfinal at Hutchinson last Thursday. Indeed, the Panthers jumped ahead, 10-0. Ultimately, though, Hutchinson won at 10 of the 14 weights. 29-4. With Drew and Pundsack leading the way, Hutchinson wound up taking four of the first six weights. After Nate Tesch and Mitchell Hartwig captured back-to-back wins by fall, GSL/LP led 22-15, But the Tigers would sweep the last six weights, including three by fall. Final score: Hutchinson/Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart 42, GSL/LP 22. *** The Panthers finished their dualmatch season with an overall mark of 14-7. That includes a 6-3 record (good for a share of second place) in the
cant three points when Riley Drew defeated familiar foe Michael Donnay, 10-3. Donnay’s record, as a result, dipped to 32-5. Any winning formula for GSL/LP also required success in the close individual bouts. Instead, Hutchinson won both of the dual’s overtime bouts, as Luke Pundsack edged the Panthers’ Bran-
don Richter, 4-2, at 132 and Paxton Jordahl slipped by Dalton Clouse, 53, at 195. Pundsack scored a takedown in the final second of overtime to deny Richter his 29th win (Richter now is 28-10), while Jordahl took down Clouse with three seconds remaining in overtime. The result dropped Clouse to 29-8 and lifted Jordahl to

Girls stun NLS, Waconia
Panthers find heroes galore in consecutive WCC upset victories
By Lee Ostrom Sports Editor ew London-Spicer was the first Wright County Conference girls’ basketball power to pay a visit to Glencoe last week. Eighth in the state Class AA rankings, 18-3 overall and a winner in seven straight outings, NLS looked like a pretty sure thing to down the 615 GSL Panthers for a second time this winter. When the teams met Jan. 15 in New London, guard Taylor Thunstedt poured in 50 points herself, helping her Wildcats roll, 73-59. But in last Tuesday’s rematch, Kelly Beneke stuck like glue to Thunstedt, limiting the junior guard to 10 points. Meanwhile, 6-foot-1 Clarissa Ober scored 23 points and took down 14 rebounds, and eighth-grader Maddie Monahan swished the winning free throw with :00.8 remaining, as GSL rallied from as large as a 17point deficit to shock NLS, 46-45. Waconia’s Wildcats arrived in town Friday, leading the WCC with but a
N
single blemish on their league record. But they left Glencoe with a second loss; that after Stephanie Klockmann posted a 19-points, 10-boards doubledouble, including a go-ahead free throw with 19 seconds remaining in a 55-53 GSL stunner. “It was a great week to play the Wildcats,” a tickled Cullen Ober said. GSL’s head coach lauded the game of keep-away his girls played while protecting a one-point lead. Indeed, the Panthers ran off all but the final 1.5 seconds before a Waconia player fouled Erin Nowak, who tallied her fifth clutch point down the stretch. “They did a beautiful job of moving and passing,” coach Ober said. A closer look at GSL’s back-toback upset wins:

Maass is GSL’s all-time top scorer
Panther boys win 74-60 at New London-Spicer
By Lee Ostrom Sports Editor Ethan Maass scored 31 points in an 85-66 thumping of Sibley East last Monday (Feb. 11) and 32 more in a 74-60 triumph at New LondonSpicer three evenings later, making the senior guard Glencoe-Silver Lake’s all-time leader for most points scored in a basketball career. Maass, whose 1,167 points prior to the opening tip at New London trailed only 1976 Silver Lake graduate Keith Stifter’s 1,188, now has 1,199 as a Panther — including the 90 he scored as a ninth-grader. And he’s still counting! The 2012-13 GSL boys, who left New London riding a five-game winning streak and sporting a 13-10 overall record, close their regularseason schedule with consecutive home games against Wright County Conference powers Litchfield (last night), Delano and Annandale. Then it’s on to the Section 5 (Class AA) tournament, where every team has a winning record, Jordan (18-4) looks like a top seed, and GSL head coach Robb DeCorsey won’t be happy if his Panthers fail to receive one of the South subsection’s four top seeds. “We played pretty well, offensively, in both games (last week),” DeCorsey said, noting that his team did not always “settle” for the threepoint shot; but instead, either took the ball to the basket, or made the extra pass. Showing his all-around game, Maass charted for 11 rebounds and

Petersen, Ebbers shine in Section 2

Glencoe-Silver Lake gymnasts have completed their first season under the direction of head coach Ashleigh Moelter. After losing varsity regulars Paige Anderson (back) and Chrissy Helmbrecht (knee) to late-season injuries, the Panthers tallied 117.175 team points at last Friday’s Section 2 (Class A) meet at Watertown-Mayer — nearly three full points off their
season-best 119.9. Section champion New Prague posted a school-record 146.675 points. Moelter praised her girls for the “hard work” they put in while adapting to a new coaching staff. A key for next winter, she says, is what the girls do to improve their routines between seasons. Team leaders Ashley Petersen and
Becca Ebbers gave quality performances at the Section 2 meet. Petersen, a sophomore, tallied a season-high 34.15 in all-around. Her career-best vault (8.925) and a 9.0 mark on floor exercise highlighted her day. “She’s made huge progress this year,” said Moelter said, who expects to see Petersen challenge for a state berth on floor exercise next winter. Ebbers, an 11th-grader, marked an
8.7 for her new half-twist-on, 11⁄2twist-off vault. She stuck her beam routine (8.325) without a fall, and earned a 32.7 in all-around. Junior Chantelle Wolff also showed a fall-free beam routine, while ninth-grader Amanda Anderson received a 25.475 all-around. Kirsten Barott, Erica Hecksel, Shawna Goettl and Sierra Trebesch all got tastes of section competition.

43 with 2:06 to go. Megan Thorson’s one of two free throws made it 45-43. Then with 48 seconds remaining, the Panthers got the ball to Clarissa Ober on the low block. Ober made a move, got up a shot and watched — like everyone else in GSL’s gym — as the ball bounced on the back of the rim, at least three times, maybe four, before falling into the basket. 45-45! Two NLS timeouts later and with 15.2 seconds showing on the clock, the Wildcats inbounded to Thunstedt, who quickly felt pressure from Beneke and Samantha Lange. Thunstedt’s pass up the left side was intercepted by Clarissa Ober, who stepped up for a clean pick just the way her dad called it in the timeout huddle. After the steal, Cullen Ober started using his timeouts. Twice, Monahan got an inbounding pass and was immediately fouled by NLS, which had fouls to give. The third time, Monahan received the ball in front of the GSL bench with enough space to heave up a long shot — most importantly, while being fouled again. Three free throws for the lead! The first one missed. “I knew I screwed up,” Monahan said. “I usually do four dribbles before shooting (a free throw), but I only did three. “I rushed myself.” The second stroke looked pure, but the basketball softly rolled off. “I thought the second one was going in,” Monahan said. One more shot for the win. “I told her to take a deep breath, and just shoot her shot,” Clarissa Ober. Monahan looked calm at the stripe. “I felt real confident,” she said. Clarissa Ober talked about the win. “I think we just all wanted it so bad. ... We all put our hearts into it and got it done.” The victory had a good taste. “It’s a very good ‘W’ for us,” Clarissa Ober added, “a very good ‘W.’” more for a 53-48 bulge. After another triple by Jacobs and a steal-and-solo layup by quick guard Anna Schmitt, the stage was set for Klockmann’s free throw and GSL’s keep-away. “It’s the (growing) confidence,” Cullen Ober said, “but it’s the (improving) patience, too.”

six assists, in addition to his 31 points, at Sibley East. Sophomore Keaton Anderson, who like Maass is a lefty, tallied 22 points with seven boards and three assists at Gaylord; then added 21 with seven boards and six assists at New London. While two of his guards were combining for 50 points a night last week, DeCorsey said GSL’s defense did a good job at contesting opponents’ perimeter shots and limiting second chances. Against Sibley East, eight of senior Trenton Draeger’s 12 rebounds came off the defensive glass. Indeed, GSL shot 53 percent from the floor at Sibley East, where the Wolverines connected on only 33 percent of their shots. Panther marksmanship dipped to 43 percent at New London, but GSL got to the line for 27 attempts, which included 18 makes. DeCorsey said his boys are playing with excitement during their current winning steak. At Sibley East, he thought the Panthers took on energy from plays like Maass’ first-possession triple out of a corner (off a pass from Anderson); Draeger’s leap-and-stuff finish with an “Alley Oop” lob the first time Sibley East tried playing man-to-man; and Anderson’s steal, solo and stuff early in the second half. Thursday at New London, GSL played without Teddy Petersen, a key member of DeCorsey’s guard rotation, and with limited minutes for ailing Greg Ober, another explosive guard. Stepping up and playing big minutes was Brody Bratsch. “I’m proud of Brody,” DeCorsey said.

Manure presents challenges with varying analysis, nutrient availability and credits based on livestock species and method of application. Learn how to manage these variables, and with grid soil sampling, enhance the value of manure on your farm. Farmers are welcome, but not required, to bring their own grid soil and manure analysis along to the workshop. The first presenter is Paulo Pagliari, University of Min-

The Glencoe Rotary Club held its annual pancake breakfast fund raiser Sunday in the high school cafeteria in conjunction with the Glencoe Business Expo. While the public enjoyed the pancakes, behind the scenes, these three Rotarians — Glencoe Police Chief Jim Raiter, Russ Runck and McLeod County Sheriff Scott Rehmann — were busy flipping and collecting the flapjacks. Not sure why that many law enforcement personnel was needed in the kitchen, but there were no reports of any stolen pancakes. The Rotary Club raises the funds for a variety projects throughout the year.

The Cub Scout program is for Kindegarten-5 grade boys who may join at any time. Each year our pack holds a number of events, including: Pine Wood Derby, Camp-in, Blue and Gold Ceremony, Cubmobile Run, among others. The pack also does community service projects each year like holding food drives for the McLeod County Food Shelf. Dens for each age group have their own additional activities and meetings. The highlight of the year for most boys is going to resident camp in the summer. The boys have a ball and learn lots at the camp. They leave with great memories. Scouting has been billed as "A Game with a Purpose." Our pack works to live up to that billing by teaching our kids great values while they're having fun. The Boy Scout Program is for boys in 6th grade up through age 17. The program achieves the BSA's objectives of developing character, citizenship, and personal fitness. Boys are trained to lead their own meetings and to plan and execute outings and activities. They also actively participate with leading many activities in the Cub Scouts program. Camping is a focus and highlight for Boy Scouts. If you'd like your son to benefit by being a part of scouting or if you'd like to help make an even better program for our kids, please contact us. Volunteering is a great investment in all of our futures!
