Maass is running with elite company
When Ethan Maass tallied the
1,000th point of his GSL basketball
career Jan. 15, 2013, during a home
game with New London-Spicer, he
joined a rather elite club.
Indeed, only six other boys — fel-
low Panthers Nic Adrian (graduating
class of 2001), Jerad Huepenbecker
(1998) and Mitch Stuewe (1996),
plus Glencoe Eagles Scott Phifer
(1977) and Gale Kottke (1964), and
Silver Lake Lakeite Keith Stifter
(1976) — preceded Maass on the
school’s list of boys with 1,000-point
basketball careers.
The first, Kottke, went on to the
University of Minnesota, where he
played with the likes of Paul
Presthus, Archie Clark and LeRoy
Gardner as a 6-7 forward on a few of
coach John Kundla’s last teams.
At Glencoe, Kottke is believed to
have set the Eagles’ single-game
scoring record by scoring 47 points
in a 1964 contest. That feat stood
alone until Adrian matched it during
a game in the GSL Booster Club’s
2000 holiday tournament.
GSL’s current all-time points
leader is Stifter, who finished his Sil-
ver Lake career with 1,188 counters.
Prior to last Friday’s game with Holy
Family Catholic, Maass was an even
100 behind, with 1,088 — and eight
regular-season contests and at least
one section game to play.
Currently, Kottke is second with
1,124 career tallies.
Phifer had 1,020; Stuewe needed
13 points in what proved to be his
final game (against Watertown-

Dave Dostal rebuilt his 1979 Polaris TXC for the 180-mile Vintage
Sled Race that begins and ends in Thief River Falls on Saturday,
Feb. 9. It will be Dostal’s first vintage race.
Dostal’s goal is to ‘just finish’
Silver Lake man enters race for vintage snowmobiles
By Alyssa Schauer

When it comes to competitions,
like NASCAR racing, or biking the
Tour de France, or go-kart racing, the
objective is to win.
For Dave Dostal, who will partici-
pate in the annual USXC Vintage
Snowmobile Race on Feb. 9 in Thief
River Falls, the objective is “to just
finish the race.”
Dostal, 48, of rural Silver Lake,
said this will be his first time racing
a vintage sled.
“I was registered last year, but
with lack of snow, the race was can-
celed. So this is the first year, and I
guess my goal is to just finish,” he
laughed.
The track is 180 miles, beginning
and ending in Thief River Falls.
Dostal explained that the map from
two years ago shows the race track
looping through nearby towns.
“The first gas stop is 60 miles
from the finish line, at the (Seven
Clans) casino, and then the track
loops around 60 miles, and we return
to that same gas stop for a second
stop to fill up before heading to the
finish line,” Dostal said.
He said two years ago, 38 sleds
participated in the vintage race and
only eight finished.
“The biggest reason racers do not
finish is because of sled breakdowns,
such as engine failures, or they hit
debris and the skis break off,” he
said.
For the race, Dostal built his 1979
Polaris TXC. “I had the engine and
drive train, and I bought parts to du-
plicate it for cross-country racing. I
bought the hood and running gear
from Tony Humlicek and Bruce
LaMott, and another piece from Jeff
Mallak. Jim Zeik did the body work.
It took about a week, on and off, to
finish it,” Dostal said.
He added that Humlicek, LaMott,
Mallak and Zeik will be his “pit
crew.”
“They will be at the gas stop, with
goggles, and gloves, and whatever

eaton Anderson tallied 29
points, including 17 of
Glencoe-Silver Lake’s last
26 counters, as the Panthers ended a
six-game losing streak by defeating
Holy Family Catholic, 73-70, last
Friday in Glencoe.
“It was a big win,” said Anderson,
one of the Panthers who stepped up
his game after fouls reduced senior
guard Ethan Maass’ playing time.
Going lengthy stretches with their
all-conference ace occupying bench
space, Robb DeCorsey’s boys still
managed to score on 21 of 31 sec-
ond-half possessions (67.7 percent).
As a result, GSL improved to 2-6
in the Wright County Conference and
9-10 overall. This week, the Panthers
remain at home for league games
with Dassel-Cokato on Friday
evening and Mound-Westonka the
following night. GSL is at Sibley
East on Monday, Feb. 11.
Holy Family, whose league wins
are over Orono (74-54) and Mound-
Westonka (72-61), is 6-12 overall.
The Fire is 0-2 against GSL, having
also dropped the championship game
of the Panther boosters’ holiday tour-
ney, 72-59,

Maass was whistled for his third
foul with 7:56 still to play in the first
half. On GSL’s next possession, An-
derson narrowed the Panther deficit
to one (23-22) by swishing a triple
out of the right corner.

The GSL list of top girl
scorers still is topped by Brit-
tany Thiesfeld, who graduated
(class of 2009) with 1,446.
However, current senior
Clarissa Ober is second now
and closing hard. As of Jan.

Four others also had 1,000-
point careers. They are: Hali
Haukos (’07) 1,210; Jalissa
Huepenbecker (’04) 1,187;
Robyn Ruschmeier (’95)
1,088; and Silver Laker Kelli

else I will need to help me
keep going,” Dostal said.
Dostal will be outfitted with
snowpants, boots, a Tech vest,
protective armor, knee and
shin guards, a warm coat, and
an “approved helmet,” for the
race.
His sled is outfitted with
stickers from his sponsors,
Mies Equipment from
Watkins and Emme’s Repair
from Silver Lake, and his rac-
ing number, 234.
“That’s pretty neat because
that was Bruce Svanda’s num-
ber when he raced in the
1970s. He’s my next-door
neighbor,” Dostal said.
He added that the race track
is busy with volunteers work-
ing the races, including flag-
men who are stationed along
the track and at intersections
to make sure the racers stop
for traffic.
“It’s a pretty neat sight.
There are all kinds of people
with their campfires and cool-
ers along the race track, too,”
he said.
“It is so busy up there. I had
to book our hotel in July,”
Dostal said.
The vintage class is the last
to race.
“We follow the newer sleds.
There are six race classes in
the entire circuit. There’s even
a Vintage Legends class for
those 50 and older. I get to
race with the younger kids,”
Dostal said.
“The guy who won two
years ago finished in four
hours. I just want to finish,”
he said.
Dostal said the average
speed for racers is about 85 to
90 miles per hour, “but will be
20 miles per hour in some
spots and then will pick up to
60 miles per hour in another
area.”
He is concerned with finish-
ing because “vintage sleds do
not handle like the newer
sleds. They have half the sus-
pension, and the vintage sleds
are narrower and can easily
tip.”
The race circuit has a re-
sponse crew, but it’s not big
enough for the entire 180-mile
track.
“I hope I don’t breakdown,
especially in an area where
there aren’t any crew mem-
bers,” he said.
“I am most excited to just
be a part of it. I have wanted
to do this since the ’90s, but I
never did,” he added.
Dostal and his wife, Angie,
have two daughters, Emma, 7,
and Caroline, 5. Dostal rents
and farms 800 acres for corn
and soybean crops, and when
he is not farming, he restores
IH tractors and works on re-
modeling projects.
“The kids love going for
snowmobile rides. They have
a blast,” he said.

GSL girls fall twice

Annandale sophomore
guard Kaytlin Kuefler tallied
31 points, including 18 from
long distance, as the Cardinals
rallied to defeat host GSL, 62-
55, Jan. 29 and extend a win-
ning streak to 10 games.
Following a 68-60 win at
Waconia, Annandale was 8-1
in the Wright County Confer-
ence and 16-3 overall.
GSL — which led 25-22 at
halftime and stayed close deep
into the second half, trailing
by only 48-47 with 5 minutes
remaining — dropped to 1-8
in the WCC. With its 70-35
loss at Holy Family Catholic,
the Panthers are 5-13 overall.
Prior to a Feb. 5 home game
with Spectrum, GSL was
mired in its second six-game
losing skid this season.
Yet, you would not know it
watching the Panthers battle
with Annandale last Tuesday.
With the score 22-22, there
was GSL gem Clarissa Ober
giving her team its intermis-
sion bulge with a three-point
play on the offensive boards.
With Annandale ahead 34-
31, there was Samantha Lange
popping a triple that tied the
score with under 12:00 to go.
And with Annandale ahead
48-44, there was eighth-grader
GSL junior Steph Klockmann (44) sets sail for the
other end after grabbing a rebound off the Panthers’
defensive board.
Maddie Monahan collecting a
long D-board and soloing for
another three-point play with
5:02 remaining.
But the Panthers could not
slow down Kuefler, who hit a
triple on Annandale’s next pos-
session to start a 10-2 surge.
***
— Ober finished with 17
points and 12 rebounds. Junior
Steph Klockmann had 16
points and 11 boards.
— GSL and Mound-West-
onka varsity teams will play a
double-header Saturday in
Glencoe. Opening tip for the
girls’ game is 6 p.m.
Anderson banked in another
three.
At intermission, HFC led,
34-31.
The Fire still led, 48-47,
after Colton Stenerson coaxed
down a pair of free throws
with 8:16 to go in the second
half.
But GSL crashed the Fire’s
defensive board to open a little
lead. First, Anderson convert-
ed at the end of a four-chance
possession. Then, following
Stenerson’s missed shot, the
Panthers raced to the other
end, where 6-foot-5 senior
Trent Draeger tipped in a
teammate’s miss.
The Panthers led, 51-48.
Anderson, a 6-foot-2 sopho-
more lefty with hops, went the
back side to receive an in-
bounding feed from Reed
Dunbar; then finished the play
for a 53-50 lead.
With 5:55 to play, Anderson
connected from the left elbow
for a 55-52 lead.
After Draeger put back his
own miss for a five-point ad-
vantage, GSL went back to
Anderson, who worked with-
out the ball, off screens set by
GSL posts, for close-range
cripples.
The second, off a nifty feed
by Dunbar, gave GSL a 61-55
lead with 3:43 to go,
“I just took what they gave
me,” said Anderson, who
slashed to the hoop for a deuce
and came off one of Draeger’s
back screens — clean! — to
take another pass from Dunbar
and tally two more for a 68-60
bulge with 1:21 to go.
But HFC kept up the fight.
Five straight points by 6-4
Joe Hanel— the last, a three-
point play that drew Maass’
fifth foul — closed the Fire to
within 71-70 with 17.2 sec-
onds still showing.
However, freshman guard
Teddy Petersen poured down a
pair of crucial free throws and
GSL’s perimeter defense frus-
trated Holy Family Catholic’s
final attempts. Anderson raved
about Petersen.
“Those (free throws) were
huge,” he said.
***
— Anderson finished 12-
for-14 from the field and 3-for-
5 at the line. He made both
triples he attempted.
— Litchfield knocked off
Delano, 60-49, in a WCC fea-
ture Feb. 1. The Dragons, 11-4
overall, have lost twice in the
league, each time by a point.
Delano dropped to 16-2.

the tourney with 187 points.
F o u r t h - p l a c e
Annandale/Maple Lake tallied
22 fewer points than GSL/LP.
The Panthers filled all 14
weights while producing two
firsts, two seconds, one third,
two fourths, two fifths and
two sixths. Of the three Pan-
thers who did not place, two
still helped their team by win-
ning matches.
A few highlights:
• Hartwig, a senior, now
sports a 30-2 season mark
after defeating Jordan Hanan
of Annandale/Maple Lake, 6-
2, in the finals at 152 pounds.
Hartwig had never before
beaten Hanan, who most re-
cently edged the GSL/LP ace,
3-2, on Dec. 20, 2012, in the
teams’ league dual.
Hartwig reached the finals
by pinning Cole Schmidt of
Dassel-Cokato (1:38) and de-
cisioning Mason Hemze of
Waconia (3-1).
• At 106, Jewett took his
season record to 28-4 by pin-
ning Hunter Martin of DC
(1:24), decisioning Thomas
Stageboard of NLS (6-2) and
stopping top-seeded Tucker
Sjomeling of Delano (5-4).
• Michael Donnay notched
his 75th career win last Thurs-
day at Howard Lake. After
winning twice at the WCC
tourney, where he placed sec-
ond at 120 pounds, he is 31-4
for the 2012-13 season.
• Brandon Richter, who
placed 5th at 126 in Delano,
picked up his 60th career win
Jan. 31 at HLWW.
• Dalton Clouse and Nate
Tesch each hauled a 25-7 sea-
son mark out of the WCC
tournament. Clouse placed
second at 195 pounds, while
Tesch took third at 138.
• Richter (27-9) and Aaron
Donnay (21-12) defeated
Hutchinson wrestlers who had
pinned them earlier this win-
ter. Richter decisioned Tyler
Karl, 5-4, in the 126-pound
match for fifth place. Aaron
Donnay pinned Logan
Wadsworth (4:53) in the
wrestlebacks at 113.
• At the state tournament for
ninth-graders, GSL/LP’s Nick
Brelje (160 pounds) and Tris-
tan Weber (170) each placed
third with a 3-1 record. Alex
Mielke also qualified for state.
He went 0-2.
• First-round matches and
quarterfinals of the Section 2
(Class AA) team tournament
are at four locations Thursday,
Feb. 14. The final four ad-
vance to Saturday’s final two
rounds at Waconia.
Currently, the top four seeds
look like New Prague, Water-
town-Mayer, Scott West and
Hutchinson, with GSL/LP
probably a fifth seed.

GSL/LP senior Martin Lezama, pictured
here working over an opponent at the
Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial tour-
nament Jan. 19, did not place at last Fri-
day’s WCC tourney. However, he did
win a match; thus contributing to the
Panthers’ strong, third-place standing.

SAINT PAUL — In re-
sponse to a number of recent-
ly introduced bills aimed at
curbing Second Amendment
rights, District 18B state Rep.
Glenn Gruenhagen, R-Glen-
coe, issued the following
statement:
“I have received hundreds
of e-mails from constituents
over the past several days
who are concerned about
DFL efforts to curb our Sec-
ond Amendment rights. I am
a fervent supporter of the
Second Amendment, and will
staunchly oppose any legisla-
tion that infringes on those
rights. I encourage con-
stituents to continue contact-
ing their legislators, and urge
them to oppose these mis-
guided efforts.
“I will support a review of
mental illness laws regarding
access to guns, and believe
that these efforts, combined
with the true enforcement of
existing gun laws, will im-
prove public safety and pre-
vent more gun violence than
many of the proposed bills
that unfairly target law-abid-
ing gun owners.”

specific gun-related legisla-
tion, please visit the House
