A split of last week’s pair of
games has the Glencoe-Silver
Lake girls’ basketball team
entering February with a 10-9
overall record.
Even better news is that the
Panthers are also entering
their final seven-game stretch
of the regular season with the
services of forward Zoe
Christensen.
Christensen made her sea-
son debut in a 46-43 win over
visiting Dassel-Cokato on Fri-
day, Jan. 29, scoring six
points with five rebounds in
17 minutes of play.
“We had her out there a lit-
tle longer than we would’ve
liked,” coach Zach Otto-Fish-
er said. “But it was good to
have her back and she was so
happy to be back. It’s been a
haul for her.”
The victory halted a two-
game losing streak and pre-
vented GSL from dropping
below .500 for the first time
since mid-December.
“It was a good confidence
building win for the girls,”
Otto-Fisher said.
The Monahan sisters, Mac
and Maddie, led the Panthers
with 12 and 11 points, respec-
tively. Maddie Monahan had
seven rebounds with five as-
sists and five steals.
Forward Maddy Kalenberg
hauled in seven rebounds
while guard Miranda Grack
posted eight points in the
three-point victory.
In their final pre-Chris-
tensen contest on Tuesday,
Jan. 26, GSL came up just
short in a nip-and-tuck battle
at New London-Spicer, falling
56-49 to the Wildcats.
“We were down three with
a minute left after being down
15 in the first half,” Otto-
Fisher said. “We felt pretty
good leaving there after get-
ting over that early hump.”
Maddie Monahan had 21
points with 10 rebounds and
seven assists, while Mac
Monahan had 16 points with
four rebounds, three assists
and three steals. Grack tallied
five rebounds.
This week is a brief one for
the Panthers, with just one
matchup at Litchfield on
Thursday, Feb. 4.
“It’s nice having a week to
work on fundamentals,” Otto-
Fisher said. “This will be a
good week for the girls to re-
group and get ready for the
games to come.”
GSL returns home to take
on Watertown-Mayer on
Tuesday, Feb. 9. The Panthers
bested the Dragons 56-42 on
Friday, Jan. 8, and lost 78-59
at W-M on Tuesday, Jan. 12.
GSL enters Thursday’s
game smack dab in the mid-
dle of the Wright County
Conference West standings,
sporting a 4-3 circuit record.

A rare Monday night game
against the Wright County
Conference West co-leaders
proved to be just what the
Glencoe-Silver Lake boys’
basketball team needed to
cure what was ailing them.
The Panthers, who entered
the evening on a four-game
losing streak and had lost
their past two contests against
New London-Spicer and Das-
sel-Cokato by double digits,
overcame a 15-point first half
deficit to defeat Rockford 79-
78 and improve to 6-15 on the
season.
“It feels great, ” guard
Teddy Petersen said. “The last
few weeks have been really
tough on us. We’ve had a lot
of downs and it’s just nice to
get an up here. Maybe it’ll get
us rolling a bit.”
Petersen led the Panthers
with 25 points in the game,
sinking five three-pointers
and drawing comparisons to
Golden State Warriors star
guard Stephen Curry from his
coach, Robb DeCorsey.
“Teddy was fantastic
tonight,” DeCorsey said. “But
overall, you have to hand it to
our kids – they really stepped
up in the second half. They
needed to close out and win a
game like this.”
As triumphant as the con-
test finished, it sure didn’t
start that way.
Early on, Rockford ap-
peared to want no part of a re-
peat performance of its nail-
biting three-point win that
began GSL’s recent skid on
Friday, Jan. 22. The Rockets
took off and had a double-
digit lead within the contest’s
first seven minutes. While the
Panthers battled back to
close the cap midway through
the frame, Rockford surged
again to hold a 13-point lead
at 48-35 as the halftime
buzzer sounded.
“I did not think we could
come back the way we were
playing in the first half, ”
DeCorsey said. “But the kids
responded and were heading
back out on the court telling
one another ‘Come on, let’s
go.’”
Petersen spearheaded the
comeback effort early in the
stanza, draining a pair of three
pointers and then sinking a
trio of free throws to help
bring GSL within three points
at 54-51 after four minutes
had elapsed.

The Glencoe-Silver Lake dance team had its best
outing of the year at the Section 3AA meet on Satur-
day, Jan. 30. It was the final competitive routine of
the season for the Synergy, who finished 12th over-
all in the high kick category at the meet. GSL did
not compete in the jazz category.

The competitive season
came to a close for the Glen-
coe-Silver Lake dance team
as the Synergy put on their
best effort for the Section
3AA meet at Mound Weston-
ka on Saturday, Jan. 30.
“We ended with our high-
est scores and highest plac-
ing over the past two sea-
sons,” coach Bertina Miller
said. “We also received our
first 7 from a judge, which is
really awesome seeing as the
teams that made it to state
were primarily 7/8’s with
some 9’s.”
Miller noted that during
the season, the Synergy had
been receiving “primarily
4’s/5’s with a few 6’s.”
GSL finished 12th overall
with a total of 48 ranking
points in the high kick cate-
gory, coming in ahead of
New Ulm (49 points), Mayer
Lutheran/Watertown (54) and
Jordan (60).
Mound Westonka took the
top spot in both high kick as
well as jazz.
The Synergy did not com-
pete in the jazz category.
“It was a great way to end
our season and it motivated
the girls to make some plans
for next season,” Miller said.
“However, we will greatly
miss our two seniors Shelby
(Clouse) and Emily (Ober-
lin). Our next year’s seniors
have huge shoes to fill.”

Venier won the individual all-around in a dual
meet against Delano on Thursday, Jan. 28,
recording a four-event score of 30.95.

With the Section 2A meet
right around the corner, the
Glencoe-Silver Lake gymnas-
tics team had another busy
stretch last week.
The Panthers hosted a trian-
gular meet against Wright
County Conference opponents
Annandale and Dassel-Cokato
on Tuesday, Jan. 26 and then
welcomed Delano to town
two nights later.
“I feel the week went really
well,” coach Kim Hahn said.
“(We) were really strong dur-
ing both meets.”
GSL posted 120.925 points
to 121.375 for Annandale and
123 for Dassel-Cokato in the
Tuesday tri. Marissa Greeley
and Gia Venier finished sec-
ond and third, respectively in
the individual all-around with
scores of 31.575 and 30.975.
Greeley finished tied for
first on vault with an 8.55,
followed by Nichole Binder
(8.425) in third and Ellie
Schmidt (8.3) in fourth.
Venier took second on bal-
ance beam with a 7.475, with
Greeley tied for third at 7.45.
Greeley (8.375), Venier
(8.275) and Binder (8.175)
finished second through
fourth, respectively, in floor
exercise. The trio finished in
the same order on uneven
bars, with Greeley at 7.2, Ve-
nier at 7.0 and Binder at 6.9.
Against Delano, Venier
claimed first place in the indi-
vidual all-around with a 30.95
as Greeley took second at
30.6. However, the Tigers
won the dual 130.95-120.55.
Delano swept four of five
top positions in beam and
floor competitions. Venier
broke up the Tigers’ block
with fourth place finishes in
both, scoring an 8.2 on beam
and a 7.85 on floor.
Greeley had the top event
finish on the night, tying for
second place on vault with an
8.55 as Schmidt tied for fifth
at 8.4. Greeley (6.95) and
Shawna Goettl (6.7) placed
fourth and fifth, respectively
on bars.
“We had strong scores on
all events against Delano and
looked really great out there,”
Hahn said. “I hope this
strength and momentum
keeps up for sections.”
Binder suffered a sprained
ankle in the Delano meet, but
Hahn hopes to have her back
in time for the sectional meet.
“We will continue to tweak
our routines and work on exe-
cution, amplitude and form as
well as add in some different
skills if need be,” the coach
said.
GSL’s final regular-season
matchup on Tuesday, Feb. 2,
against Orono was postponed
due to the threat of inclement
weather and no makeup date
had been announced as the
Chronicle went to press.
The Section 2A meet is
scheduled for Friday, Feb. 12
at the K & G Center in
Mankato.

The Glencoe-Silver
Lake/Lester Prairie wrestling
team was swept in its lone
competition last week, losing
a trio of matchups in the
Hutchinson Quadrangular on
Friday, Jan. 29 at Buffalo
Lake-Hector High School.
The Panthers were defeated
48-18 by Waseca, 42-30 by
Hutchinson and 43-21 by Sib-
ley East on the night.
Sibley East took a 25-0
lead on GSL/LP before 138-
pounder Aaron Donnay
claimed the Panthers’ first
victory by pinning Colton
Harens at the one minute, 27
second mark of the match.
After a Wolverines’ win at
145, Dylan Melchert gritted
out a 10-9 win against Logan
Tesch to make the score 28-9.
Two more Sibley East wins
were countered by three
GSL/LP victories. Nick Brel-
je won by fall at 182, defeat-
ing Paul Glisczinski at 2:52
before Tristan Weber and
Peyton Sell each earned nar-
row wins at 195 and 220, re-
spectively.
Weber went to overtime to
defeat Cody Voigt 3-2, with
Sell posting a 3-0 defeat of
Christian Figueroa.
The three straight wins
made the score 37-21 before
Sibley East won the final
match of the night to bring
the count to the final 22-point
spread.
GSL/LP claimed points in
four matches against Waseca,
the first coming from Donnay
at 138, who dominated Dylan
Spencer in a 21-5 technical
fall at 4:00 before Andrew
Harpel won by forfeit at 145.
Brelje earned an 8-0 major
decision against Lucas
Maxon at 170 and Weber de-
feating Cy Kuschel 6-0 at
195.
It was a far closer contest
between GSL/LP and
Hutchinson, with both teams
claiming a number of forfeits.
The Tigers had four forfeits
go in their favor, compared to
two for the Panthers.
In contested matches, Don-
nay won again at 138, via a 4-
0 decision over Dylan Pund-
sack. His win kicked off a
four-match unbeaten streak
for GSL/LP.
Alex Mielke topped Jordan
Stenzel 4-0 at 138, Melchert
bested Logan Wadsworth 11-
5 at 152 and Cody Rae won
by forfeit at 160.
The Panthers won three of
the final five matches, but it
wasn’t enough to score the
team victory.
Brelje defeated Christian
Kurth 6-4 at 182, Weber won
by forfeit at 195 and Sell
pinned Nate Dettman in 3:25
at 285 to finish off the con-
test.
This week, GSL/LP grap-
ples at Canby on Friday
evening. The Panther junior
varsity is slated to wrestle at

League (MSHSL) conferred its Aca-
demics, Arts & Athletics Award (AAA)
on GSL students Kirsten Barott and
Teddy Petersen – pictured above
from right to left. The MSHSL AAA
Award is presented to students with a
grade-point-average of 3.0 or higher
while participating in athletic and fine
arts activities.
Barott, Petersen named AAA Award winners
the score at 63-all before for-
ward Jacob Litzau hit a free
throw to give the hosts their
first lead at 64-63 with just
over six minutes to play.
Rockford regained a five
point edge from there, but the
Panthers roared back to tie the
score at 77-all on Petersen’s
final three-pointer of the
evening.
The Rockets took their final
lead with a free throw on the
ensuing possession, but for-
ward Alex Schrader’s layup
off a Petersen drive-and-pass
with nine seconds to go
proved to be the decisive tally.
Two timeouts later under the
Rockford basket, guard
Mason Ahlbrecht ensured the
Rockets could not launch their
final shot attempt; the way-
ward basketball was corralled
by Litzau as time expired with
GSL jubilantly recording the
upset.
“I do think that the last time
we played (Rockford) when
we were down 7-8 points late
and then came back and had a
chance to tie at the end
showed us that we can stick
with these guys,” Petersen
said. “This is the first step to
getting back to where we need
to be for the playoffs.”
Guard Luke Frahm scored
14 points and Popelka tallying
10 points in the Panthers’ top
win of the year to date.
Now, GSL – 4-6 in WCC
West play – has an opportuni-
ty to go on a winning streak
with a Friday home game
against Litchfield.
The Panthers mauled the
Dragons 54-32 in their previ-
ous meeting at Litchfield on
Friday, Jan. 8.

First Ev. Lutheran Church, Glencoe
Stand firm and hold fast to the teachings
T
his coming Sunday many churches will observe “Transfiguration Sunday”. We will again hear about this
event from the Gospel of Luke (9:28-36). Jesus takes three of His disciples up to the mountain to pray
with them. Jesus’ face changes and a heavenly light made Him look so glorious. Moses and Elijah appear
and they are speaking about Jesus’ death on the cross which shall soon take place. Out of this story we learn much
that is both interesting and important, even though some of the things told us here are hard to understand.
This event shows how Jesus cared for His own then, and He cares for His own today. He knows when the river of
our life will encounter rapids and waterfalls, when great peril and pain are on our horizon, straining our faith and pa-
tience to the utmost.
To prepare us for that, He takes us into the holy mount of His Word to see His glory. Let us ever follow His lead-
ing. He will never fail us. He will be with us in the darkest hour and lead us to the sunshine on the other side.
God bless your day.
