39 GSL students participate in WE DAY Nov. 12

To the Editor:
Last Wednesday, I had the opportunity of bringing 39 Glencoe-Silver Lake (GSL) seventh through 12th graders to St. Paul for WE DAY.
You may have seen this event on the news last week. It is a celebration of our youth and the service they provide to make our schools, communities, and even our world a better place.
The students who were selected had to have “earned” their ticket to WE DAY by performing service. Unfortunately, we were limited to 39 tickets for our students, as we have all of our students helping out in one way or another. Our students at GSL really do a great job of serving others and this is something we should all be very proud of.
At GSL, academic student achievement is our focus. It has been, and will always be, the reason why we go to school. With that being said, our commitment to having as many different learning opportunities as possible isn’t limited to the classroom. When you stop to think about it, at GSL, we have countless opportunities and experiences that are an invaluable part of our culture at school. We expect our students to be good citizens, respectful peers and all-around good people.
From blood drives, to food drives, to student tutoring programs, to working with our Rotary on clean water in Zambia, our students put service above self time and time again. So, at this opportunity, I would like to say thank you to all of our students and staff for the work they do in making our district a better place.
