Wednesday, April 16, 2014 The McLeod County Chronicle By Josh Randt Sports Editor t’s been a while since we’ve started 2-0,” Head Softball Coach Steve Davis said after his team notched victories over Lester Priairie/Holy Trinity and Mound Westonka last week. In fact, it’s almost been a decade since the 2005 team downed Lester Prairie 10-0, and BOLD 11-1 to open the season with back-to-back wins. But after beating the Bulldogs 9-3 Thursday, and the White Hawks 11-1 in six innings Friday, the GlencoeSilver Lake Panthers find themselves in a position that’s been foreign for multiple years, sitting at 2-0. It’s still early, but the wins, and runs, are very encouraging. Especially considering that GSL only broke double digits in runs twice last season, and never strung together more than two victories more than once. “It’s the perfect way to start the year,” Davis said happily. “The pitching has been very good … Their hitting the ball well. I just think the kids are focused in, and they’re a little more confident.” The Panthers are hitting the ball well. In just two games, GSL has three home runs from three different batters. Steph Klockmann and Erika Ribar went long Thursday, and Piper

GSL beats up on White Hawks 11-1
By Josh Randt Sports Editor Prior to the start of the season, Head Coach Dean Scwhirtz of the Panther baseball team said this year’s squad would have to score more runs in order to compete. It only took two innings Friday against the Mound Westonka White Hawks for Glencoe-Silver Lake to go up 7-0, on its way to an 11-1 victory. A seven-run second inning sparked by pitcher Cole Petersen’s lead-off single carried into the sixth, when GSL went up 9-0. “I was very happy,” Schwirtz said of Friday’s victory. “Anytime you can start the year out with a win — and to play it with only one error — at the high school level, I’ll take that any day.” Captain Cole Petersen started out a little shaky on the mound for the Panthers, loading the bases in the first inning of the season after getting Reid Dahl to fly out leading off. With two out and the bases juiced, Cole Petersen kept throwing heat and got Shane Henry to ground out to Bennett Bielke at second, ending the early-inning threat. The Panthers went to work immediately as Cole Petersen singled off Dan Brenk to open up the second. Pinch running for the pitcher, Reed Wawrzyniak stole second during Tanner Grack’s turn at the plate, which resulted in a strikeout. Mason Goettl and Colton Lueders followed with a pair of singles, stacking baserunners for Josh VonBerge. VonBerge slapped one back at Brenk, who went for the force out at home, but overthrew his catcher, resulting in a snowball fight and a pair of runs. Brenk then struck out Carter Pinske for the second out, but walked Teddy Petersen, leaving runners on first and second. Bielke took Brenk’s first pitch opposite field and drove in Wawrzyniak

Panthers still strong in relays Ruud to coach
By Josh Randt Sports Editor It’s only been one week of outdoor competition, but the Panther track and field teams have had an opportunity to see some different competition, and try individuals in events they may not normally compete in. Thursday at Willmar, the girls took fifth out of eight teams with 42.9 points, while the boys claimed sixth out of nine teams with 55.5. Previous to Thursday, Glencoe-Silver Lake traveled to Mankato for a quad featuring Mankato West, Waconia and Waseca on April 8. Finishing with just 15 points, the girls took fourth while Waconia claimed first with 101. The boys were one spot better in third with 50 as the hosting Scarlets of Mankato West took first with 95. “We’re letting a few kids try some different events,” boys’ Head Coach Josh Metcalf said of Mankato. “It’s just nice to be outside instead of indoors.” While GSL lost a number of athletes from last season, both the girls’ and boys’ teams have kept the tradition of at least one strong relay team alive. The girls’ 4x200-meter relay team took first Thursday, while the boys’ 4x8 team took third. Running for the girls’ 4x2 was Kelly Arnold, Taylor Novak, Emily Muetzel and Shelby Clouse. For the boys’ 4x8, runners included Garret Ardolf, Jac Chelman, Freddy Pena and Cody Becker.
in MFCA game
By Josh Randt Sports Editor The Minnesota Football Coaches Association Tackle Cancer All-Star Football Game will have a few familiar faces on the sideline when the game kicks off on June 28. Defensive assistant for the Glencoe-Silver Lake football team, Paul Ruud will get the opportunity to be an assistant coach for the South team. Also donning the colors of the South team is Dalton Clouse, who had a stellar year at fullback for GSL. He even filled in on the defensive line on key plays. In 30 years of teaching and coaching, Ruud has never had the opportunity to coach in the all-star game, but was picked from a pool of coaches after he won the Butch Nash award in 2012. “It shows how Panther football is respected in the state,” Ruud said of being picked. “It is an honor to be chosen by your peers.” Ruud took some time to reflect on the journey his coaching career has been. “This is my 30th year teaching and coaching — 23 years of football at Glencoe and GSL,” Ruud said. “I have enjoyed watching the program grow. When I started with

Coach (Jim) Zaske and Coach (Dave) Dose, we struggled some early. We never gave up and made it into the program we have today. It takes a lot of time and effort by a bunch of people. We wouldn’t have done as well as we did without them. Hats off to the booster club, school staff, grounds crew, and school administrators. And we can’t forget the parents.”

Spring cleaning
I think my body is attempting some form of spring cleaning, because it seems as though it’s trying to rid me of fluids and the will to live. I don’t know how or why it happened, but I’ve been struck — thunderstruck, even — with sickness. After two beautiful days outside covering softball and baseball on Thursday and Friday, I was primed for a weekend that was supposed to feature some awesome weather, at least on Saturday. But my plans were soon foiled when I woke up Saturday morning to a faint sore throat and an overall feeling of weakness. “Let’s see if I can nip this in the bud,” I thought as I downed my third glass of orange juice in about five minutes. But it was all in vain, as my health continued to deteriorate as the day went on. I had plans to hang out with my friends Alex and Brendan in the afternoon. Needless to say Alex was a bit surprised to find me sleeping on the couch with a massive blanket up to my nose when he arrived at 3 p.m. with the sun begging us to go outside. You know it’s bad when you’re friends are reconsidering staying in your presence. “We can leave and let you rest,” Brendan offered. Though, I think it was more for his health than mine. Regardless, I survived the weekend ... barely. It’s only been two days at the office and I think there may be a threat of quarantine if I don’t start to improve

quickly. Although, this sickness thing works quite well for dealing with the ladies here when they start giving me too much sass. I offered Lori Copler a hug as I was blowing my nose when she arrived Tuesday morning. She graciously declined and for some reason disappeared from the newsroom for a large chunk of time. While I didn’t hear anyone shout, “GO BED!” at me this past week, it seems my body took it upon itself to physically shout it at me. I’m just hoping it’s the last time for this year, because Karin Ramige Cornwell just came into the newsroom and asked me a question, to which she immediately followed with, “Are you even here right now?” I certainly don’t feel like I am. So if you see a stiff, pale figure mumbling and oozing snot at a game or event this week, the zombie apocalypse has not begun. It’s just your local sports editor trying to get coverage while his immune system takes batting practice on his insides.

and VonBerge, before Vorlicek forced another White Hawk error in the next at bat, scoring two more to complete the lineup. Cole Petersen notched his second single of the inning in the next at bat, plating Vorlicek, who scored from second after advancing on a wild pitch. The seven-run swing deflated the White Hawks, who managed to score with two outs in the bottom of seventh to avoid the shutout. By then, the Panthers had added four runs, including two in the top of the seventh. “When they load the bases and we’re able to get out of it and then score some runs,” Schwirtz said, “that’s what we want to see.” Schwirtz was also pleased with the way his starting pitcher handled himself on the mound. “I thought he (Cole Petersen) did a great job, and to be able to get that out without giving up a run is very encouraging,” Schwirtz said of Cole Petersen’s first inning. “He just did it himself on the mound and got after it.” “The first inning was a little shaky, but I’m always that kind of guy the first inning. I don’t know why,” Cole Petersen said. “Once I get into a groove it goes a lot better. I can work the count more and get them to ground out. The defense played really well behind me. Everybody was hustling and diving. It was a good team win.” Vorlicek relieved Cole Petersen in the sixth with one out and a man on second. Cole Petersen faced 23 batters, walked three, struck out six and scattered three hits in his first start. Vorlicek faced seven batters, walked one, struck out two and gave up one run and one hit. MW went through three pitchers, with Brenk earning the loss for the White Hawks. Brenk faced 14 batters, walked two and struck out as many. He gave up five hits and seven runs, two of which were earned.

Davis collected her first of the year Friday. “Erika probably could’ve had another one Friday,” said Coach Davis, “but I held her up at third with no outs.” Klockmann scored on a deep fly ball over the left-fielder’s head with two outs in the first versus LPHT. Ribar’s came in the next inning as GSL went up 3-0. Piper Davis sent hers to the fence in the third against MW, and also plated Klockmann, who reached on a triple. Scoring 20 runs in two games is something GSL hasn’t done since 2012, when they beat Litchfield 22-9, and Hutchinson 7-5 in consecutive days in May. Handling the mound so far for GSL has been sophomore Moriah Maunu, who earned her stripes last year as a freshman, rotating with ace-pitcher Courtney Lemke. “Moriah is pitching really well, we just walked a few too

many that first game,” Davis said. “She did a little better the second day. She’s done a good job keeping the ball low, and hasn’t given up hits. The hits she has given up, she’s scattered them around pretty well.” Maunu has pitched all 13 innings for GSL, though Coach Davis admitted he’ll be using some different girls in the rotation this week. “Layne (Herrmann) will do some pitching this week, but we’ll kind of see how the games go,” Coach Davis said. “For sure we have to get some of our other pitchers some innings.” Absent from Thursday’s
game and most of Friday’s was Josie Schmitt, who started last year at second base. Schmitt was sick, so Ellie Lepel filled in. With Schmitt set to return to the lineup this week, Coach Davis said Lepel and Amanda Meyer will most likely split time. “Whoever is hitting will get more time,” Coach Davis said bluntly. The Panthers traveled to New London-Spicer yesterday (Tuesday) for a Wright County match up. GSL hosts Litchfield on Thursday and Hutchinson on Monday before traveling to Orono on Tuesday, April 22.
Carter Pinske laid out for a fly ball late in Friday’s 11-1 smashing of the Mound Westonka White Hawks. Pinske and the Panthers put an exclamation mark on the first win of the season, and it’s plays like the one Pinske made that have Head Coach Dean Schwirtz excited about this year’s team.

Thursday’s event in Willmar was a bit more serious, as the majority of teams GSL faced were from Class AA, while the Panthers are in Class A. Of the nine girls’ teams present at Willmar, six were from Class AA, and of the eight boys’ teams, five were from Class AA. The girls’ best performance on the track was the 4x200-meter relay. GSL eked out a first-place finish over Willmar with its time of 1:51.76 to the Cardinals’ 1:52.57. Other notable finishes from Thursday for the girls include: Shelby Clouse taking fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.68; Muetzel earned fourth as well in the 400-meter dash with a 1:03.74; the 4x100 relay team claimed third with a time of 53.36. In the field, Courtney Konen’s third-place, 7-foot pole vault was good enough for third. Standouts for the boys from Thursday are Jake Stuedemann and Tyler Donnay. Stuedemann came up just a bit short in the 100-meter dash, earning second place with a time of 11.62. Willmar’s Chris Cunningham took first with 11.55. Donnay also took second in the discus with a throw of 125 feet, 8 inches. St. Cloud Apollo’s Benjamin Miller threw a massive 137 feet, 6 inches for first. Other notable finishes from Thursday for the boys include: Chelman’s third-place performance in the 3200-meter run with a time of 10:22.41; in the 110meter hurdles, Dalton Clouse’s time of 16.06 was good for third; the 4x800 relay team came in third at 9:31.16; and Keenan Mehlos claimed fourth in the long jump with a distance of 19 feet, 3.5 inches. The meet with Holy Family Catholic School Monday was postponed. The Panthers now compete at Annandale on Thursday. Metcalf said some of the relay teams will be competing for a spot at the Hamline University meet, which teams qualify for strictly on time. The first nine fastest times will compete at the

Take action to stop distracted driving as prom approaches
Distracted driving is a leading crash factor, and the McLeod County Sheriff ’s Department, along with McLeod County Public Health, are urging McLeod County motorists to pay attention behind the wheel. Safety advocates are highlighting the issue during the prom and graduation seasons — in the last three years distracted teen drivers were involved in crashes that resulted in 25 deaths and 4,505 injuries. Driver distraction is a leading crash factor in Minnesota, accounting for around 20 percent of all crashes annually, resulting in at least 70 deaths and 350 injuries, according to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety (DPS) Office of Traffic Safety. In Minnesota, it is illegal for drivers to read, compose or send texts or e-mails, and access the web on a wireless device while the vehicle is in motion or a part of traffic, such as at a stoplight or stuck in traffic. It also is illegal for drivers under age 18 to use a cell phone at any time. “Your focus behind the wheel is far more important than the text message you are sending or reading behind the wheel,” says Kerry Ward, traffic safety advocate and certified child passenger safety technician. “Drivers need to make a serious effort to recognize and limit dangerous and unnecessary distractions, and passengers need to speak up to stop and prevent drivers from texting.” Distractions cause drivers to react more slowly to traffic conditions or events, such as a vehicle stopping or pulling out in traffic. A University of Utah study reports that using a cell phone while driving, whether hands-free or hand-held, delays a driver’s reactions as much as having an alcoholconcentration level of 0.08 percent. And when texting, drivers take their eyes off the road for up to 4.6 out of every six seconds — equivalent to traveling the length of a football field at 55 mph hours without looking up. Driver distractions include reaching for items, fiddling with radio, music and vehicle controls, eating and drinking, dealing with rowdy passengers, grooming and more. Tips to minimize distractions: Hang Up and Drive • Turn off the cell phone, or place it out of reach. • If on a phone conversation with someone while driving, ask them to call you back. • Texting, e-mailing and web use while driving is illegal in Minnesota — including when stopped in traffic. • Drivers under age 18 are prohibited from any cell phone use. Passengers • Speak up to stop drivers from engaging in distracted behaviors. • Assist with phone, directions and radio and music controls. More Tips • Map out and study directions before your trip. • Teach children the importance of good behavior in a vehicle. Distracted driving education is a component Minnesota’s core traffic safety initiative, Toward Zero Deaths (TZD). A primary vision of the TZD program is to create a safe driving culture in Minnesota in which motorists support a goal of zero road fatalities by practicing and promoting safe and smart driving behavior. TZD focuses on the application of four strategic areas to reduce crashes — education, enforcement, engineering and emergency trauma response.

The middle section of the former Independent Coop Elevator, now Olson Elevator, along Hennepin Avenue was demolished Wednesday morning. April 20, 1994 Rich Glennie, Editor The Glencoe City Council added a storm water utility fee to residential, business and industry utility bills at its meeting Monday night. The fee will create revenues and build a fund for storm water improvement projects. The city of Glencoe Community Center Task Force will conduct three surveys in the next two weeks — a citizen input survey, a focus/user group survey and a business survey. The intention of the surveys is to determine community interest levels in the posvided from the I&I budget line item of the WWTP budget. Questions and clarifications of the project led to Councilor Dietz motioning to accept the low bid of VisuSewer in the amount of $33,500.00. Councilor Ziemer seconded the motion with all members voting in favor. Motion carried. PW Director Drew presented the quotes for a leaf vacuum. Old Dominion Brush Co., Inc of Richmond, Virginia was the low quote in the amount of $41,701.00. This model is a 74 HP John Deere diesel engine with a 25 ton box container. This is a Street Department 2014 budged item. Discussion led to Councilor Adamietz motioning to approve the purchase of a leaf vacuum from Old Dominion Brush Co., Inc. in the amount of $41,701.00. Councilor Ziemer seconded the motion with all members voting in favor. Motion carried. City Administrator Mark Larson presented the quote from SEH for Architectural and Project Management Services for the Glencoe City Center Brick Rehabilitation Project. Scope of work included in the bid: initial site visit, construction documents, bidding services, contract preparation, construction administration and project meetings for the sum of $9600.00. Discussion led to Member Perschau motioning to award SEH $9,600.00 for project management services for rehabilitation of the brick on the north wall of the Glencoe City Center. Council member Adamietz seconded the motion. All members voted in favor. Motion carried. PW Director Drew informed the council that the 99 Chevrolet 1 ton and 95 Chevrolet Blazer are not worth fixing. Harpel’s has a 2014 ¾ ton pickup with a 9 foot Hinniker plow that they have been using to plow their lot this winter. The vehicle has 500 miles on it with a full warranty. Proceeds from the sale of the 1 ton, the blazer and the road grader and the plow from the 1 ton will be used to purchase the truck and plow. Councilor Ziemer motioned to approve the purchase of the 2014 ¾ ton truck from Harpel’s for $24,877.99. Councilor Schrupp seconded the motion with all members voting in favor. By separate motion of Councilor Dietz to approve purchase of the 9 foot Hinniker plow for $3750 already mounted on the truck from Harpel’s. Councilor Adamietz seconded the motion. All members voted in favor. Motion carried. Separate motions required as no sales tax is payable on the plow. Scott Qualle, MN Spect, Inc. ap-

The finance plan is to issue bank-qualified, tax exempt bonds to be repaid over a ten year period from 2016 to 2025. There were 10 bidders. The lowest bidder was Raymond James and Associates Inc., New York, New York with a true interest cost of 1.9287811%. Total finance costs $1,952,466.20. The City’s general obligation rating was reaffirmed at “A1” by Moody’s. Councilor Perschau then introduced the following resolution and moved for its adoption: RESOLUTION NO. (2014-07) A RESOLUTION AWARDING THE SALE OF $ 1,952,466.20 GENERAL OBLIGATION IMPROVEMENT BONDS, SERIES 2014A; FIXING THEIR FORM AND SPECIFICATIONS; DIRECTING THEIR EXECUTION AND DELIVERY; AND PROVIDING FOR THEIR PAYMENT Complete resolution on file in the office of the City Administrator. Councilor Adamietz seconded the motion. Upon a roll call vote all members voted in favor. Whereupon said resolution was adopted and approved. PW Director Schreifels informed the council that the South Trunk Sewer Line was televised after the June 2013 flooding event. The 24” clay pipe entering the WWTP was not passable by the camera due to heavy roots in 200 feet of the 250 foot pipe. This pipe is 15 feet deep making it cost prohibitive to open cut this sewer line and replace. Three quotes were presented for CIPP. Visu-Sewer project bid was the low bid in the amount of $33,500.00. Funding for the project will be pro-
peared before the council to propose that the City of Glencoe adopt the 1994 Uniform Building Code Fee Schedule. The fees on this schedule are approximately 40% higher than the current schedule used by the City for the past 20 plus years. The Planning and Industrial Commission recommends approval of the adoption of the 1994 fee schedule. Discussion and clarification of fees led to a motion by Councilor Perschau to approve the first reading of the ordinance amending the Municipal Code to adopt the 1994 Uniform Build Code Fee Schedule and to authorize the City Attorney to draft the ordinance and to set the public hearing for April 7, 2014. Councilor Schrupp seconded the motion with all members voting in favor. Motion carried. City Administrator Mark Larson informed the council of the calculation for the City contribution to the west ditch at 16%. The petition draft language includes that the City contribution would not exceed the 16% of Total project costs for the Marsh Ditch project as proposed. Discussion led to Councilor Dietz motioning the approve the 16% contribution of total costs to the Marsh Ditch Project and to approve the Mayor and City Administrator to execute the petition to the Buffalo Creek Watershed District for West Ditch Improvements. Councilor Adamietz seconded the motion with all members voting in favor. Motion carried. Motion to approve payment of the city bills by Member Adamietz, seconded by Member Perschau. All voted in favor. Motion carried. Member Adamietz motioned to adjourn the meeting as Mayor Wilson stated it is not necessary to close the meeting to review disciplinary action. No member seconded the motion. Motion failed. Mayor Wilson then called for a motion to close the meeting. Member Schrupp motioned to close the regular meeting with Member Ziemer seconding the motion. Members Schrupp, Dietz, Ziemer and Perschau voted in favor. Member Adamietz voted no. Motion carried. Meeting was closed and moved to West Conference Room. Motion to reopen the meeting made by Schrupp and second by Ziemer. All voted in favor. Motion to adjourn: Councilor Schrupp. Second Councilor Ziemer. All voted in favor. Meeting adjourned. The above minutes are the official actions taken by the Glencoe City Council. The complete minutes are on file and available for review in the office of the City Administrator. Check out the “Herbicide Spray Drift Demonstration” video for an in-field comparison of herbicide applications using various spray nozzles under high drift conditions. Would you like a better understanding of how herbicide resistant weeds develop and how different types of herbicides affect or kill susceptible plants? Check out the herbicide resistance management videos which help explain how herbicide resistant populations develop and the mode of action of important herbicide chemistries. The site also contains a series of videos on soil compaction. Topics covered range from a discussion describing the effects of soil compaction on crop production and the importance of soil structure in defending against compaction to how managing wheel traffic and tire inflation can help prevent soil compaction. The site also contains a video demonstrating the use of drones in pest management research. More videos on a range of crops topics will be posted in the future.

Some different chicken recipes
Chicken is a staple in most families’ menus. There is a ton of options for preparation, but I often find myself in a chicken breast rut, making the same thing over and over. I have been trying to step outside that chicken box and try something new. Here are a few that are easy and really good. Sour Cream and Bacon Slow Cooker Chicken 8 bacon slices 8 boneless, skinless chicken breasts 2 (10 oz) cans roasted garlic cream of mushroom soup 1 cup sour cream ½ cup flour Salt and pepper to taste Cook bacon until some of the fat is rendered. Be sure that the bacon is still pliable and not crisp. Drain on paper towels. If you use this method, reduce the flour to ¼ cup. Or don’t cook the bacon and proceed with the recipe. Then wrap one slice of bacon around each boneless chicken breast and place in a 4-5 quart slow cooker. In medium bowl, combine condensed soups, sour cream, and flour and mix with wire whisk to blend. Pour over chicken. Cover slow cooker and cook on low for 5-8 hours until chicken and bacon are thoroughly
My Turn Now
By Karin Ramige Cornwell cooked. (Check the chicken after about 5 hours if your slow cooker is newer.) You may want to remove the chicken and beat the sauce with a wire whisk so it is very well blended. Pour sauce over chicken. I halved the recipe which worked well. As I am writing this, I realized I forgot the flour in the sauce, but it turned out well anyway. Cilantro Lime Chicken With Black Beans and Corn 3 chicken breasts 1-1/2 tablespoons olive oil 1 limes, juiced 1 cup cilantro 1 small bag of frozen corn 2 minced garlic cloves 1/2 red onion, finely chopped 1 can of black beans, drained, rinsed 1 teaspoon cumin or chipotle powder Salt and pepper to taste Place all ingredients into the slow cooker. Cook on low for 8 hours or high 4 hours, serve with tortillas and/or rice. Dress with sour cream, guacamole, and/or cheese.

County Board approves annual Winstock large assembly permit
By Lori Copler Staff Writer The McLeod County Board of Commissioners approved a large assembly permit for the annual Winstock celebration at its April 8 meeting. The event is scheduled for June 13-14 in Winsted. Tom Ollig of the Winstock Country Music Festival committee said about 20,000 people are expected at the festival, similar to last year’s levels. The festival celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2013. Ollig said there were about 1,200 attendees the first year of the annual festival, which experienced a large financial loss. Ollig said last year’s festival, the 20th, had a net profit of about $700,000. Over its 20-year history, the festival has raised and donated over $4 million to Holy Trinity Schools in Winsted. In addition, Ollig said the festival “brings an additional $500,000 in commerce to the community each year” as attendees patronize gas stations, restaurants, bars and grocery stores in the area. In other business April 8, the County Board: • Heard from Jail Administrator Kate Jones that the jail had donated eight mattresses to a youth camp. Jones said the mattresses were part of a shipment of 12 new mattresses that came in on Jan. 8, but eight were damaged when the shipment froze and plastic pieces on the corners broke. Jones said the mattresses were still usable, but weren’t allowed in the jail because of the plastic shards. The company replaced the mattresses at no cost to the jail, but didn’t want the damaged ones back. Jones said she then contacted Common Cup Ministry, which put her in contact with the youth camp. • Agreed to allow Parks Director Al Koglin to spend up to $30,000 on a used Tool Cat to move chairs and tables between buildings at the fairgrounds. Koglin said he felt a Tool Cat would work better than a skid steer for that purpose. • Agreed to replace carpet in the Parks and Extension offices at a cost of $7,388. Building Maintenance Supervisor Wayne Rosenfeld said the current carpeting is over 20 years old, as it was installed when the new fairgrounds buildings were constructed. • Welcomed Dillon Hayes, the new environmental technician in the Environmental Services office, and recognized Karen Kohler-Nelsen, a McLeod County social worker, as the recipient of a Minnesota Social Service Association (MSSA) staff achievement award.
