With a number of seniors departing
after last year’s track season, Head
Coaches Josh Metcalf and Robb
DeCorsey are now trying to filter in
replacements in numerous spots.
At last year’s state track meet,
Glencoe-Silver Lake had three boys
medal in different events, as well as a
girls’ 4x200-meter relay team, which
failed to make it to the final round.
Total, GSL competed in six differ-
ent events at last year’s state meet.
This year’s team only boasts 13
seniors, but they will be counted on
for plenty of points.
Both Metcalf and DeCorsey got a
chance to see their teams in action as
indoor meets at St. John’s and St.
Thomas Universities afforded coach-
es and athletes a welcome change
from running in hallways.
The first meet of the season is
scheduled for April 8 at Mankato
West.
With a new track surface intact,
GSL will host three meets: a confer-
ence meet on April 28, followed by
an invitational the next day. The final
home meet is May 22 for the subsec-
tion championship.
Boys
“We have a lot of holes to fill,”
Metcalf said of the boys. “Especially
with (Trent) Draeger gone, who we
could count on scoring in three jump-
ing events. (Greg) Ober usually
scored in three or four (events), as
well as (Ryan) Kuester. Tanner
Konen qualified for state in the pole
vault ... I don’t know if there’s any
one person that’s going to be able to
cover those four. Hopefully we’ll be
able to piece together some people to
compete.”
The biggest concern for Metcalf is
finding some points from the field.
“I think we’ll be OK on the track,
but we’ll definitely have to find some
field guys to step up and replace
those points we’ve lost from last
year.”
Helping to generate some scores in
the field will be throwers Tyler Don-
nay and Adam Eberhard, a pair of
seniors who competed regularly last
year.
The boys’ 4x2 relay team had its
ticket to state punched with only two
runners left, but a botched hand off
kept the boys at home.
Making up this year’s 4x2 are a
quartet of seniors, one of which par-
ticipated in the event last year.
Keenan Mehlos is the lone returnee
from last year’s group. Gus Mendoza
and Kyle Beck, along with newcomer
Jake Stuedemann, round out the rest
of the 4x2 relay.
One area Metcalf has his sights set
on for some points is distance.
Members from this year’s GSL
boys’ cross country team who placed
sixth at state will test their spring-legs
in track.
Metcalf plans to throw Brandon
Richter, Garret Ardolf, Cody Becker,
Jac Chelman, Michael Schaefer and
Freddy Pena in the mix. All but Pena
saw varsity experience in cross coun-
try.
More cross country boys are set to
feature in the mile and two mile. Isiah
Herout, Casey Schulz and Austin
Schroepfer will focus in on those
events, and possibly Chelman as well.
Metcalf said the goal for this year’s
boys’ team is solid finish in the con-
ference and section.
“We’ve been very competitive year
in and out in the Wright County Con-
ference,” Metcalf said. “Being the
last year where it’ll be a full confer-
ence meet, it would be a nice chance
to be in the top three again ... Our real
focus is essentially true team, confer-
ence, subsections, section and state.
Those are the only five that really
matter. Outside of that, at the other
meets we’ll be trying to figure out
what our strongest lineup is.”
Girls
The girls may not have lost as
many pieces, but the ones they did
lose will be tough to replace as well.
Kelly Beneke was part of the 4x2
relay team that participated in state.
Stepping in to fill Beneke’s shoes this
year is junior Emily Muetzel, who ran
on last year’s 4x400-meter relay.
“She’s put in a lot of work in the
weight room,” DeCorsey said of
Muetzel. “So I expect them to do
well.”

throwers in the conference,” accord-

The 16th-annual Tim Orth Founda-
tion Basketball Jamboree kept audi-
ences entertained this past weekend,
while introducing some local youths
with costly medical needs to the area.
Patrons packed the Glencoe-Silver
Lake gymnasium with an abundance of
events and activities scheduled and
plenty of silent auction items to mull
over.
This year’s recipients were honored
in between boys’ and girls’ basketball
games made up of area all-stars.
Each recipient and their family were
recognized by the audience, and escort-
ed by a Crown College basketball play-
er as they made their way to half court.
Emotions ran high during the power-
ful ceremony that left many applauding
and cheering the families who stood
before them.
The basketball games were inter-
rupted frequently, but with good rea-
son, as many organizations, groups and
clubs displayed entertaining talents or
put on events for onlookers, including a
Buffalo Wild Wings eating contest.
Claiming the girls’ game 55-46 was
the red team, which was led by
Hutchinson’s Taylor Jurgenson, who
finished with 18 points. Miranda
Schulz (Waconia) also chipped in 16 of
her own while Madison Christie
(Hutch) scored seven.
The Black team’s Andi Gayner
(Dassel-Cokato) scored 13, while her
Charger teammate Brenna Olsen (DC)
finished with 10.
While the Black team lost, Megan
Eckberg brought home a scholarship
from the girls’ shootout, making five
three-pointers.
For the boys, the Black team edged
the Red team 80-77 in a back-and-forth
battle.
Leading the way for the victors was
Austin Smith (Howard Lake-Waverly-
Winsted) with 18. His Laker teammate
Alex Smith (HLWW) finished with 11,
while Eric Madsen (Litchfield) and
Cole Petersen (Glencoe-Silver Lake)
each finished with 10 a piece.
Waconia’s Tommy Gove led Red
scorers with 15, while Nick
Machemehl (Lester Prairie/Holy Trini-
ty) dropped 14.
Hunter Hulley (Watertown-Mayer)
and Alex Heigl (LPHT) each scored 10
as well for the Red in a losing effort.

Coming off a 5-10 season from
last year, a young Glencoe-Silver
Lake softball team gained some ex-
perience, and now hopes to compete
more within the Wright County Con-
ference.
The only face missing from last
year is Cortney Lemke, who the Pan-
thers will miss on the mound.
Lemke earned all-conference
recognition, but was forced primarily
into pitching duties with an inexperi-
enced squad.
While his girls are still green,
Head Coach Steve Davis likes the
look of his team this year.
“We have a pretty strong, deep
team,” Davis said. “We’re deeper
than the past. We’ve actually got
some competition in spots.”
Davis even looks to have an actual
pitching rotation on his hands, in-
stead of leaning on one horse, like
Lemke, last year.
“We’ve got three very good pitch-
ers who have added more velocity,”
Davis said of Moriah Maunu (9),
Maddy Kalenberg (10) and Becca
Green (11). “Now we’ve got options,
instead of one girl.”
Steph Klockmann also earned all-
conference last year as a junior, and
will be counted on heavily in her
senior season.
“She’s our best player. She can
play any position,” Davis said.
“Right now, she’s kind of penciled
into first (base), but she can play
anywhere. We’ll see how the season
goes, and she’ll fill in the gaps.”
Amanda Meyer is the only other
senior on the roster. Davis said she
could see time at a number of spots,
though she’s currently vying for a
position in the field.
Juniors Josie Schmitt and Rachel
Rusten earned honorable mention
honors last season, with Schmitt cov-
ering second and Rusten patrolling

In her freshman season as a
South Dakota State University
Jackrabbit, Clarrissa Ober, of
Glencoe, has helped the girls’
basketball team to the Final
Four of the Women’s National
Invitation Tournament (WNIT).
Ober has come off the bench
this season for the Jackrabbits,
but has averaged 14 minutes
per game.
Currently, she’s shooting 44
percent from the field and aver-
aging 4.6 points a game.
Where Ober has really made
her mark is rebounding. The
freshman is fourth on the team
in total rebounds with 141, and
second on the team in offensive
rebounds with 43.
Since entering the WNIT,
Ober has shot 35 percent from
the field, ripped down 23 re-
bounds, scored 22 points and
tallied seven blocks in 66 min-
utes of playing time.
One of her biggest nights
came in a 70-62 victory of
Minnesota, where Ober played
24 minutes and had nine re-
bounds, eight points and two
blocks.
SDSU now plays the Univer-
sity of Texas El Paso at 8 p.m.
tonight (Wednesday) for the
chance to play in the WNIT
championship against the victor
of Rutgers versus South Flori-
da.
It’s hard to believe, but it’s
already been a year since I
took the reins from Lee Os-
trom as the sports editor here
at the Chronicle.
When I walked into the of-
fice last year at this time I
was full of anticipation and
nervousness.
Those feelings still remain,
although it’s mainly because
I’m not sure what I’ll be
blamed for or asked to do
next.
As sports editor, part of my
duties include changing
clocks during daylight sav-
ings time, and I even
swapped out fluorescent light
bulbs one slow afternoon as
our receptionist, Trish, was
on the verge of a seizure.
I’ll admit. I was a little
leary coming back to work in
my hometown, but with a
year under my belt, I’m con-
fident it was the right deci-
sion. At least for myself.
I’m sure some of you out
there have no idea what I’m
talking about at times. That’s
fine, because I don’t always
know either.
It truly has been great get-
ting back in touch with old
teachers and coaches, though
it’s kind of weird since we’re
on a professional level now.
Patrolling the sidelines at
Panther football games, I
found myself instinctively
corresponding to the coach’s
shouts of “BACK UP! GET
BEHIND THE LINE!” Until
I remembered that I have a
camera and a note pad in-
stead of a helmet and nut cup.
Indeed, my job keeps me
busy and traveling all over
the state, which I thoroughly
enjoy. Though, the Panther
girls’ basketball playoff-game
versus Norwood-Young
America that was scheduled
in Northfield in the middle of
winter was a tad idiotic. But I
ended up finding a little hole-
in-the wall bar that serves ex-
cellent chili. So I guess I
can’t complain.
But by far, my favorite part
about this job is the interac-
tion with the kids, because
after all, it’s about them.
There are plenty of stories I
cover that don’t feature high
school athletes, but that’s
where the majority of my
time is spent.
Even on days when I’m a
bit crabby, all it takes is a
walk through the high school
or a sporting event to bring a
smile across my face.
It’s all sort of come full cir-
cle for myself, and I can cer-
tainly tell you that I didn’t
plan on coming back to Glen-
coe once I was done with col-
lege.
Just like I didn’t plan on
having a still swollen finger
from my tussle with Dalton
Clouse in December, but,
hey, the beat goes on. Literal-
ly.
I can tell you without a
shred of doubt that I am in a
much better place overall
since I moved back a year
ago.
When I wrote my introduc-
tory article at this time last
year, I asked you to bear with
me as I adjust to my new po-
sition.
I thank all of you for going
through this transition phase,
as I know it was an adjust-
ment after I took over for
Lee, who did such a fantastic
job for over a decade.
I just hope that all of you
are as excited about my sec-
ond year as sports editor, as
much as I’m excited to be
here, no matter how unlikely
we all thought this would be.

himself a scholarship.
Jayden Juergensen (Hutch) claimed the
three-point challenge for the boys and also
walked away with a scholarship.
The Panther gymnasium and commons
area was filled to the brim, as this year’s
Orth recipient list swelled to 12.
“We had to do it right this year,” Don
Tangen said, “because there were so many
recipients who needed help.”

What really has the coach
excited is his batting order.
“If you look at the lineup,
we’re pretty good one-to-
nine,” said Davis. “These nine
will put it in play and give us a
chance to win. We’ve got a
good competitive batting order
for our conference.”
Right now, it’s looking like
Rusten could lead off, with
Schmitt behind her and Klock-
mann rounding out the top
three.
Piper Davis will most likely
bat cleanup, though Becca
Green could see time there as
well.
“It kind of depends on who’s
starting,” said Coach Davis.
The West Division of the
Wright County Conference is
where the Panthers hope to
challenge.
“We hope to compete on our
side of the conference, or win
it,” Coach Davis said. “Our
skills are good enough. I
would be disappointed if we’re
not toward the top (of the divi-
sion).
And for sections, I think it’s
time that we win a section
game and get to Mankato.
We’re good enough for that.”

ing to DeCorsey, who will now
be replaced primarily by Zoe
Christensen, an eighth grader.
Jenna Haag was a regular
fixture in the 4x400-meter
relay, as well as the 400-meter
dash.
DeCorsey said there’s a
“slew of freshmen” that could
fill in for Haag, including Erica
Hecksel and Maddie Monahan.
“With the events that they
covered and excelled in, we
have a lot to replace,”
DeCorsey said. “Those three
girls are gigantic to lose.”
Though DeCorsey’s lost
some valuable assets, he still
has two senior leaders in Kelly
Arnold and Tori Burr.
Burr is also hoping to turn
success from the fall into
points for the track team, as
she finished 21st at the state
cross country meet this past
fall. She’ll be competing in the
one and two mile.
“She’s always been a solid at
the one and two (mile),”
DeCorsey said of Burr. “She’s
definitely the leader of the dis-
tance bunch. They follow her
lead. I’d love to see her break-
through and get to state this
year.”
Arnold returns after a junior
season where she made it to
state on the 4x2 relay team,
and as an individual in the 200-
meter dash.
“I really think she can get
back to state in both events,”
DeCorsey said of Arnold.
“Kelly is the leader of the other
half of the team. She spent a
lot of time in the weight room
during the off season, and I
want that to pay off for her.”
Like the boys, DeCorsey
will need some help in the
field. Despite that, the coach
said his team should have their
gaze upon subsections.
“It would be nice to win the
subsection again, and I think
there’s a chance of that,” said
DeCorsey. “But we need to
find some people in the field
events.”

The Minnesota Department
of Health (MDH) Immuniza-
tion Program is collaborating
with the Office of Emergency
Preparedness to provide vac-
cines to the local public
health department for a full-
scale mass vaccination exer-
cise.
The vaccines are available
through Federal 317 vaccine
funding, but can only be used
in very specific circum-
stances. In this case, MDH
can provide vaccines for any
child, including fully insured
children, only during mass
vaccination exercises for pub-
lic health preparedness pur-
poses.
MDH encouraged the local
public health department to
consider using this opportuni-
ty to conduct school-located
vaccination exercises (an al-
lowable type of mass vacci-
nation exercise).
MDH recommended
choosing adolescent vaccines
to meet the proposed updates
to the School and Child Care
Immunization Law, vaccines
such as meningococcal or
Tdap.
“Do Something Easy
Today: Get immunized” is the
theme of the reminder card
sent to parents of adolescents
this month in preparation for
the coming changes to the
immunization laws.
On Sept. 1, changes to
Minnesota’s immunization
law will take effect. Medical
and conscientious exemptions
are still allowed under the
law. The new vaccines that
will require documentation of
immunization or a legal ex-
emption include:
• Tetanus, diphtheria, per-
tussis (Tdap) – Required for
all students entering seventh
grade in September 2014.
Students in eighth through
12th grade must show docu-
mentation if the school re-
quests it.
This replaces the Td immu-
nization requirement.
• Meningitis (meningococ-
cal) – Required for all stu-
dents entering seventh grade
in September 2014. Students
entering eighth through 12th
grade must show documenta-
tion if the school requests it.
To assist in the transition of
the changes public health de-
partments in McLeod, Meek-
er and Sibley counties have
partnered with all the schools
in each of their counties.
McLeod County Public
Health, Glencoe Regional
Health Services, Hutchinson
Health, McLeod County
Emergency Management and
Minnesota Responds (a com-
ponent of the Medical Re-
serve Corps) have joined to-
gether to create a mass vacci-
nation exercise for 11- and
12-year-olds who will be en-
tering seventh grade in Sep-
tember 2014.
Director of McLeod Coun-
ty Public Health, Kathy
Nowak said, “It’s a great way
to build community partner-
ships while serving a large
population of kids.”
The immunizations to be
given on April 9 will be free
for all children 11-12 years
old regardless of insurance or
pay status while supplies last.
Information packets will be
sent home with the children
through each of the schools
that house sixth-grade stu-
dents. Parents should look
over the information, deter-
mine which immunization(s)
their child needs, sign the
consent form and return it to
school.
The four immunizations of-
fered during the exercise are:
meningococcal, Tdap, (both
are required) hepatitis A and
human papillomavirus
(HPV). These are recom-
mended. Parents who need
help determining what vacci-
nations are needed for their
child to enter seventh grade
this fall should call McLeod
County Public Health (320-

their health-care provider.
These immunizations do
not replace a child’s physical,

Free vaccinations planned for county 6th graders April 9
Two items which have pret-
ty much become staples in
my fridge or freezer are a ring
of smoked sausage and
frozen meatballs.
They are both great helpers
to throw together a quick and
tasty meal, with lots of op-
tions to do so.
Here are a few of my fa-
vorites.
One-Pan Cheesy Smoked
Sausage and Pasta Skillet
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 pound smoked sausage, sliced
1 cup diced onion
1 tablespoon minced garlic
(about two fresh cloves)
2 cups chicken broth
1 10-ounce can diced tomatoes
1/2 cup milk or heavy cream
8 ounces dry pasta (any small pasta will do)
1/2 teaspoon each of salt and pepper
1 cup shredded cheddar-jack cheese
1/3 cup chopped scallions, for garnish
Add olive oil to a 4-5-quart saute pan over
medium high heat. Add onions and sausage
and cook until lightly browned. Add garlic
and cook for about 30 seconds.
Add chicken broth, tomatoes, milk, pasta,
and seasonings. Bring the mixture to a boil,
cover, and reduce heat to low. Simmer for
about 15 minutes, or until pasta is tender.
Turn off the heat and stir in 1/2 cup of
cheese. Sprinkle remaining cheese on top and
cover for about five minutes to allow cheese
to melt. Top with sliced scallions and serve.
Meatball Sub Hotdish
1 loaf Italian bread, cut into 1-inch-thick
slices
8 ounces cream cheese, softened
2 tablespoons mayonnaise
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
1/2 teaspoons black pepper
2 cups grated mozzarella cheese, divided
1-2 pounds frozen meatballs, thawed
4 cups marinara sauce
1/2 cup water
Arrange your bread slices in an ungreased
9x13-inch baking dish; set aside. In a bowl,
combine cream cheese, mayonnaise, season-
ings, and pepper; spread over bread slices.
Sprinkle with half of the mozzarella; set aside.
Mix together the meatballs, marinara and
water; spoon over mozzarella. Sprinkle with
remaining cheese. Bake uncovered in a pre-
heated 350-degree oven for 30 minutes.

Are you qualified for heaven?
T
he NCAA basketball tournament is in progress again with a very limited number of teams that make it into the tournament. So, what de-
termines who gets in? Answer: teams qualify for the tournament by the quality of their play during the season.
Now consider a much more important issue: are you qualified to go to heaven? According to logic, many people agree that some kind of
‘good’ must be attained in life in order to qualify. However, not one of us likes to hear that God’s qualifying standard for heaven is perfection.
What is our record in meeting God’s standard for heaven? Admittedly, we must confess that during times of hardship or stressful situations,
we have not always acted with endurance and great patience. When we experience life that treats us ina devastatingly unfair way, we have not
always raised our voices in joyful thanksgiving to God - just to list a few of many situations. The truth is: we have a losing record and have
failed miserably to attain perfection.
Do we have no chance to reach heaven? the good news is: God qualifies us for heaven. That’s right. Jesus came into this world on a mis-
sion - to qualify us for heaven. Where we failed, He did it all perfectly. When we were stuck in darkness and death, He came and rescued us
by enduring the punishment for all of our sins. He removes all the failures from our records and He replaces them with His perfection. In
Christ, that is trusting in Him as our Savior, we are qualified for heaven!
“Giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light. For He has rescued us
from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son He loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.” —
Colossians 1:12-14.
