The Glencoe-Silver Lake
girls’ and boys’ golf teams
competed in some wildly var-
ious weather conditions as
both squads got their spring
seasons underway over the
past week.
The GSL girls swung away
under sunny skies and warm
temperatures when they com-
menced their campaign at
Burl Oaks Golf Club in
Mound on Tuesday April 14,
as did the Panthers boys when
they began their schedule on
their home course at Glencoe
Country Club two days later.
However, fast forward to
Monday, and both squads had
to abbreviate their own invi-
taional meet to nine holes as
slate gray skies and frigid,
swirling winds invaded the re-
gion.
However, both girls’ coach
Scott Eckhoff and boys’ coach
Chad Koenen agreed on one
thing: it still beat snow.

The Brownton Bruins ama-
teur baseball team opened its
2015 season with an 8-4 win
over St. Croix Falls.
While a victory was appre-
ciated, the non-league game
also gave the Bruins the op-
portunity to give five of its
pitchers live experience on
the mound, as well as the de-
fense a chance to try more
than one position.
Manager Doug Schuette
said that while the bullpen
this year has significant depth
— with five potential starters
and seven relievers — it will
not be able to count on two of
its starters from the 2014 sea-
son.
Cody Hallahan, who had a
6-1 record, 82 strikeouts and
a 1.68 ERA last year for the
Bruins, asked for a release
from his contract for 2015.
“Due to a job change, Cody
won’t be back as he has de-
cided to work closer to home
and his work site,” said
Schuette.
Nick Heller, another Bruin
pitcher, is recovering from
shoulder surgery. He may bat
and, hopefully, take some in-
nings at first base as he re-
covers.
Schuette said Josh Wend-
landt, Joe Ahlers, Ryan
Grams, Dylan McCormick
and Bryant Nordby “will
pitch the majority of our in-
nings. All can be starters and
relievers. Wayne Kujas, Jeff
Wendlandt, Matt Schwichten-
berg, Lucas Doelger, Chad
Genz, Jason Rosenau and
Bryce Lindeman also will get
relief innings.”
Schuette said as of right
now, left fielder Brad Daak
may or may not be back for
the 2015 season. Michael
Hahn, a pitcher and first base-
man, isn’t planning on com-
ing back for 2015, “but that
could change.” The remain-
ing roster from 2014 will be
back, with the addition of
Jaden Katzenmeyer.
With the majority of the
roster back for 2015, both the
batting lineup and defensive
positions will be very similar
to 2014, Schuette indicated.
“With work schedules and
other commitments, there will
be opportunities for all to
contribute,” the Bruins’ skip-
per added.
The Crow River League
will continue to provide
tough competition, Schuette
said, with the three W’s —
Winsted, Waconia and Water-
town — being the teams to
beat in the north division,
while Plato and Green Isle
will be the icons to topple in
the south.
“With the middle tier teams
being more balanced, each
year it gets more challenging
to qualify for the region tour-
nament,” said Schuette. “In
order to qualify for the region
tournament again, we’ll need
to be healthy and playing at a
high level come playoff
time.”
*****
Four of the five potential
starting pitchers saw mound
time in Saturday’s game.
Josh Wendlandt tossed the
first two innings, giving up
two runs, one earned, on
three hits as the St. Croix
Falls Bandits got off to a 2-1
lead in the first two innings.
Taylor Schuette, in his first
at-bat of the season, blasted
one over the center-right field
fence for a solo home run in
the bottom of the second to
score the Bruins’ first run of
the game.
The Bruins took advantage
of back-to-back doubles by
Deryk Randt and Ryan
Grams, a single by Bryce
Lindeman and a couple of
pitching miscues to tally three
runs in the third and take a 4-
2 lead. Singles by Lindeman
and Grams, three walks and a
couple of passed balls al-
lowed the Bruins to score two
in the fourth for a 6-2 lead.
Chad Genz had the Bruins’
second home run of the game
in the bottom of the seventh
for two runs to finish out the
locals’ scoring for the game.
The Bruins ceded a run in
each of the sixth and ninth in-
nings to the Bandits to end up
with an 8-4 win.
After Josh Wendlandt’s
start, Ahlers came in for two
innings and allowed two hits
as he walked one. Mc-
Cormick threw the next two
innings, giving up one run on
two hits as he struck out three
and walked four. Grams then
hurled the next two frames,
striking out three and walking
four. Jeff Wendlandt pitched
the final inning, giving up
one run on one hit as he
walked one.
Brownton had eight hits to
the Bandits’ eight. Randt,
Grams, Schuette, Genz and
Lindeman had two hits each,
while Schwichtenberg and
Doelger each had one.
The Bruins will have their
Crow River League opener
Sunday at New Germany.
First pitch is at 2 p.m.

GSL golf teams
keep on playing

The Glencoe-Silver Lake
track and field teams took
their collective show on the
road last week for a pair of
outdoor meets, before Moth-
er Nature once again proved
to be a prankster on Monday.
While Panthers competi-
tors found their share of suc-
cess in both male and female
competition, the week was
particularly good for the
boys’ team, who won their
first meet of the season at
Foley on Friday, April 17.
GSL Boys
After a pair of runner-up
finishes to begin the spring,
the GSL boys found their
way to the top of the heap
with a victorious perform-
ance at the Foley Invitational
to close out last week.
The Panthers posted a top
score of 157 points, outpac-
ing their hosts, who finished
second with 151 points. GSL
was also 46 points better than
third-place Pierz.
The Panthers won three of
four relays, claiming victory
in the 4x100-, 4x200- and
4x800-meter competitions
with respective times of
47. 66 seconds, 1 minute,
35.27 seconds and 8:54.73.
GSL runners also claimed
two individual events, with
Brandon Richter winning the
800-meter run in 2:04.58,
while Jac Chelman was tops
in the 3200-meter run with a
10:38.01.
Three days earlier, the
Panthers took second in a
Wright County Conference
quadrangular meet at Orono,
GSL relay teams placed
first in the 4x200 and 4x800
relays, taking second in the
4x100 and 4x400.
Panthers competitors
claimed a pair of first-place
results in field events.
Mitchell Rothstein won the
triple jump with a leap of 36
feet, 10 inches and Grayson
Maresh won the discus with
a hurl of 116-8.5.
GSL Girls
The GSL girls claimed
their second second-place
finish in as many meets at
the Orono Quad.
Panthers individuals
claimed four first-place fin-
ishes at the conference meet.
Shelby Clouse won the 100-
meter dash in 13.12, while
Emily Muetzel was tops in
the 400-meter dash in
1:02.02.
Zoe Christensen earned a
pair of top finishes, one on
the track and one in the field.
She won the 100-meter hur-
dles in 16.99, then was tri-
umphant in shot put with a
toss of 36-6.
GSL won one relay on the
day, taking the 4x200 in a
time of 1:52.36.
At Foley, the Panthers girls
team came in fourth with
102.5 points, edging out con-
ference rival Litchfield’s
fifth-place total of 95 points.
The hosts won the meet with
163.5 points.
Christensen again won the
100 hurdles with a time of
16.66, with Maddie Monahan
winning the 300-meter hur-
dles in 50.75.
Megan Stewart earned a
first for the Panthers’ dis-
tance troupe, winning the
3200 in a time of 13:12.97.
This Week
A meet in New Prague, ini-
tially scheduled for Monday,
April 20, was pushed back
three days to Thursday due to
inclement weather.
GSL is also slated to run in
a conference quad at Mound
Westonka next Monday.

It was a stretch full of performances both
impressive and disappointing as the Glencoe-
Silver Lake baseball team squeezed in five
games last week.
The week commenced with a convincing
15-5 win at New London-Spicer in the Pan-
thers’ first road game of the season on Tues-
day, April 14. GSL returned to Vollmer Field
with a thrilling, come-from-behind defeat of
Dassel-Cokato on Thursday, April 16, before
hitting the wall in an 8-0 loss to visiting
Hutchinson the next day — a game in which
the Panthers could not muster up a single hit.
“In the D-C game I was very happy with a
relentlessness of not giving up and battling
back in the final inning to pull out the victo-
ry,” coach Dean Schwirtz said. “In the Hutch
game, nothing seemed to go our way.”
GSL recovered from Friday’s blanking by
claiming a split in the Watertown-Mayer
Tournament on Saturday, losing 9-7 to the
hosts in the tourney opener before defeating
Rockford 9-6. The split kept the Panthers’
record above .500 at 4-2 entering this week.
“Overall I'm happy with the progress that
we are making,” Schwirtz said. “We are
starting to see better pitching as we progress
throughout the year. These pitchers will only
help us as we move towards the postseason.
Defensively I think we can do much better.”
Aaron Boraas earned the win in his start
against NLS, scattering seven hits and four
earned runs over 4 1/3 innings while striking
out four and walking one.
Teddy Petersen drove in a third of his
team’s runs with five RBI while going 3-for-
3 with three runs scored.
Defeat was staring GSL in the face after
the team gave up five runs in the top of the
seventh to turn a 5-1 lead into a 6-5 deficit,
but the Panthers roared back with two runs in
the bottom of the frame to steal away the
one-run victory in a balanced offensive at-
tack. Mitch Pinske got the win with one in-
ning of work in relief of starter Tanner
Grack, who gave up three hits and one run
over six innings while striking out five with
an equal number of walks.
Grack was GSL’s lone baserunner of the
game against Hutchinson, as his second-in-
ning walk proved all the offense the Panthers
could muster as Tigers pitcher Jayden Fleck
tossed a no-hitter with three strikeouts.
At Watertown, GSL dug itself an 8-1 hole
that it could not quite fight its way out of in
the two-run loss to the Royals. Errors ruled
the day as Panthers starting pitcher Jacob
Popelka was hung for the loss despite just
one of the eight runs he was charged with
being earned. Popelka struck out six with
four walks, while giving up seven hits. Ben-
nett Bielke and Mason Goettl notched two
RBI apiece during their team’s attempted
rally.
The up-and-down week ended on a happy
note as GSL used a six-run second inning to
defeat Rockford in its tournament finale. Pe-
tersen directed the offense by going 2-for-4
with three RBI, with Mitch Boesche also
driving in a pair of runs. Starting pitcher
Tyler Chap earned the win with three innings
Chronicle photo by Tom Carothers
Tanner Grack shared a laugh with Jake Arlt at first
base when the Glencoe-Silver Lake baseball team
hosted Hutchinson on Friday, April 17. Grack, who
earned a walk, was the Panthers’ lone baserunner of
the game in an 8-0, no-hit loss.

Schultz earns first-degree black belt
Haley Schultz of the Glencoe Karate
Club passed her shodan exam to earn
a first-degree black belt during quar-
terly training in Brookings, S.D., April
10-11. Schultz, who earned the honor
two weeks shy of her 12th birthday, is
the youngest member of the club to
accomplish this feat. She began train-
ing at the age of 6 with the Hutchin-
son Karate Club before joining Glen-
coe in 2011. Schultz is pictured front

knowledging the achievement. Be-

The Western Warriors Junior Olympic vol-
leyball teams that represent Glencoe-Silver
Lake concluded their seasons in a tourna-
ment at GSL High School on Saturday, April
18.
The Western Warriors 14’s team won the
tournament, the fourth time out of five op-
portunities that the squad has done so. The
team, coached by GSL varsity coach Lori
Schwirtz, also earned tourney titles in
Mankato, LeSeuer and Orono.
The 14’s lone second-place finish in its age
bracket came in a second-place finish in a
tournament hosted by Watertown. The team
also competed in a 16-year old tournament
this season, “playing well,” according to
Schwirtz.
There are two Western Warriors 13-year
old teams, 13-1 and 13-2. The 13-1 team also
competed in Saturday’s tournament, finishing
fourth.
“They are a scrappy bunch of players and
what I like about them is they don’t like balls
dropping, so they will do what they can to
get the ball over the net to defend the next
play,” Schwirtz said of the 13-1 team.

second, just three strokes
behind WCC West jugger-
naut Litchfield, at the first
conference meet of the year
at Burl Oaks.
“It looks like the confer-
ence race will be closer this
season,” Eckhoff said.
GSL carded a 402 to the
Dragons’ 399. Fellow con-
ference heavyweight Annan-
dale was third with a 411.
Ashlyn Ratike led the
Panthers with a third-place
score of 94, followed by
Alexis Kerslake’s 97 that
was buoyed by a 43 on the
front nine. Claire Wraspir
and Lindsay Wedin finished
with a 106 and 107, respec-
tively.
A noticably more bundled
squad hosted the GSL Invi-
tational six days later, with
Kerslake claiming the indi-
vidual championship with a
43 over nine holes.
Ratike fired a 52, Wedin a
55, Wraspir a 58 for a team
score of 208.
Annandale got a measure
of revenge, however, by
winning the meet with a
score of 192.
Still, Eckhoff was pleased
with the first week of com-
petition as a whole.
“We are very excited
about the season at this
point. I think our conference
is going to be a tight race
with Litchfield, GSL, and
Annandale shooting good
scores the first round of con-
ference play. Alexis and
Ashlyn have played a few
excellent rounds and are
proving they can play with
the top players in the confer-
ence,” he said.
GSL Boys
The GSL boys took sixth
in their conference opener at
home, as Dylan Schuth’s 99
led the Panthers to a team
score of 433.
Trevor Prosusta carded a
109, Mitchell Beneke a 112
and Jayden Lachermeier a
113 to contribute to the final
score.
Leam Armstrong was the
Panthers’ top golfer in the
GSL Invite on Monday,
carding a 51 in competition
that was limited to the back
nine at GCC.
Schuth finished the frosty-
round with a 53, with
Beneke posting a 55 and
Christian Higgins a 56 for a
team score of 215.

record. In its lone home game
of the stretch last Tuesday, the
Panthers doubled up New
London-Spicer 20-10 at Oak
Leaf Park before falling 24-13
at Dassel Cokato on Thursday
and 17-3 at Hutchinson on
Friday.
Lexi Hansch earned the win
against NLS with three in-
nings of pitching in relief of
starter Maddie Posusta. Both
pitchers also figured in the
Panthers’ offense with one run
scored and two runs batted in
each.
Molli Cacka had a big day
at the plate against the Tigers,
going 3-for-3 with five RBI
and three runs scored. Colbie
Kuras logged four RBI with
two runs scored. Marisa
Luchsinger also scored three
times in the decisive home
victory.
Destiny Talbot-Senn led the
Panthers offense at Cokato,
going 3-for-4 with three RBI
and two runs scored, with
Hansch driving in two and
scoring three times. Morgan
Mathews scored a pair and
drove in two runs.
At Hutchinson, Posusta led
a sparse offensive afternoon
with one run scored and one
driven in on a 1-for-3 day at
the plate. Kylie Ness and Tal-
bot-Senn posted GSL’s other
two RBI.
Baseball
A 3-2 mark in five games
played last week gave the
GSL baseball team a 3-3
record after its first half-
donzen contests.
The Panthers won their first
two matchups of the five-
game stretch, topping New
London-Spicer 15-3 and Das-
sel-Cokato 10-6 last Tuesday
and Thursday, respectively,
before losing 5-2 to visiting
Hutch on Friday.
GSL split its two games at
the Watertown-Mayer Tourna-
ment on Saturday, falling 2-0
to the hosts before blowing
out Rockford 14-2.
Mitch Boesche (NLS), Pey-
ton Sell (D-C) and Cole Math-
ews (Rockford) each earned a
pitching victory.
Alex Troska also claimed a
save in the win over the
Chargers, though he was the
hard-luck loser agianst Water-
town, despite allowing only
one earned run as GSL logged
just one hit in the game.
Sell and Nick Schmidt
topped the Panthers’ offensive
charts last week. Sell went 3-
for-4 against NLS, 2-for-3
versus Hutchinson and 3-for-3
with four RBI in the Rockford
win. Schmidt was 3-for-4 with
three RBI against D-C and 2-
for-3 with two RBI versus
Rockford.
Luke Frahm was 2-for-4
with two RBI against the
Chargers.

By Tom Carothers
Sports Editor
Glencoe-Silver Lake softball coach Steve
Davis characterized last week as a “fair” one
after the Panthers went 2-1 over three games
in Wright County West Conference play.
“We could’ve made a few more plays here
and there, but the girls are working hard and
with a little bit more, we’re right where we
should be,” he said.
Coming off its first loss of the season to
non-conference opponent Norwood Young
America on Monday, April 13, GSL dove
right back into WCC West play one day later
against New London-Spicer.
The Panthers got out any frustrations they
might have had from the previous defeat on
the Tigers, rolling to a 12-2 victory in five in-
nings. GSL filled the scorsheet with Maddy
Kalenberg’s five-RBI effort on a 3-for-4 af-
ternoon leading the way. Layne Herrman and
Becca Green also chipped in with two RBI
apiece with Kalenberg and Moriah Maunu
scoring three runs apiece.
Maunu pitched her way to a second victory
by striking out three while scattering four
hits and two walks in the abbreviated contest.
GSL kept the bats going two days later at
Dassel-Cokato, pummeling the Chargers 15-
6 for its third conference win.
Maunu struck out three batters, giving up
eight hits and one walk while being charged
for four earned runs of the six allowed.
Offensively, Erika Ribar drove home near-
ly one-quarter of the Panthers’ runs by going
2-for-3 with four RBI, also scoring twice.
Josie Schmitt accounted for three RBI, as did
Green, who also went 3-for-4 with four runs
scored. Davis drove in two runs while scor-
ing three herself on a 2-for-3 afternoon.
Rachel Rusten also went 2-for-3 with two
runs scored.
“The New London-Spicer and Dassel-
Cokato games were very good ones for us,”
Davis said.
The offensive fireworks that GSL were
throwing up mid-week were squelched at the
end of the stretch, however, as host Hutchin-
son dealt the Panthers their first conference
loss in a 6-4 decision.
GSL led their hosts and spirited rivals 4-1
heading into the bottom of the third inning,
but the Tigers surged ahead with a four-run
inning of their own en route to the two-run
victory.
“We made one mistake defensively and
that led to us giving up three runs,” Davis
said. “We just need to clean up mistakes like
that and we should.”
The Panthers mild offensive output was
balanced, with four different players driving
in one run each, as well as a quartet scoring
one run apiece. Davis and Green each scored
one run with one RBI, with Davis going 3-
for-4.
A bout of troublesome weather moved into
the area following the weekend, forcing the
postponement of games at Willmar and
Mound Westonka.
While Davis does not know whether the
non-conference matchup against Willmar,
which had been scheduled for Monday, will
be made up, Tuesday’s contest against the
White Hawks was initially moved just one
day back to Wednesday.
It’s an otherwise light stretch for GSL,
who entered the week at 3-2 overall and sit in
a second-place tie in the WCC West stand-
ings with a 3-1 conference mark.
The Panthers’ next scheduled contest after
Wednesday’s prospective Mound Westonka
tilt is on Monday, April 27 against Holy
Family Catholic at Oak Leaf Park. GSL is
also slated toreturn to conference play the
next day when Litchfield pays a visit.

on the mound, before Bielke struck out five
batters in middle relief.
In addition to the Panthers’ 4-2 overall
record entering this week, the team also sits
in third place in the WCC West with a 3-1
conference mark.
A game against Mound Westonka, initially
to open this week’s round of games on Tues-
day, was pushed back to Wednesday on ac-
count of poor weather.
GSL is scheduled to host another confer-
ence opponent, Orono on Friday afternoon,
before traveling to Victoria to take on Holy
Family Catholic on Monday, April 27.

St. Paul’s UCC, Plato
Awe-moments
H
ave you ever had an “awe-moment?” Maybe you have had your breath taken away by the sight of a waterfall, or
heard the sound of ten thousand Sandhill Cranes as they flew along the Platte River in Nebraska, or witnessed the
birth of a calf?
The people at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Plato recently experienced a God-with-us-awe-moment on Easter
Sunday morning. Shortly after seven o’clock, while singing “Christ the Lord is Risen Today,” the west wall of the chancel
suddenly lit up in gold. As we continued singing “Death in Vain forbids him rise” the full-sized shadow of a man appeared
in the middle of the illuminated square on the wall. It was mine!
I quickly pivoted and stepped aside to witness the orange sun floating over the rooftops of Plato’s east side. It was per-
haps no miracle or half-miracle, but certainly was a time of having been in the right place at the right time - an awesome
moment!
Christ the Lord is Risen! Christ is risen indeed!
But do we base our faith only on such synchronicities? Awe-moments and nice experiences? But is there more to a life
of trusting in the Divine day by day? A good clue to answering the question of what more is found for me in the words of
the spiritual we at St. Paul’s UCC sing every time we have communion:
“Let us break bread together on our knees
(repeat)
When I fall on my knees
With my face to the rising sun
O, Lord, have mercy on me”
Sunrise surprise, every day as we walk together in humility. Awesome!
