Section B
9-1 defeat of Annandale on Friday, April
22, as the Glencoe-Silver Lake baseball
team improved to 6-0 on the season.
By Tom Carothers
Sports Editor
A perfect start to the season
was run to 6-0 as the GlencoeSilver Lake baseball team
won both of its Wright County
Conference West matchups
last week. On the road for
both games, the Panthers won
8-6 at Mound Westonka on
Tuesday, April 19, and 9-1 at
Annandale on Friday, April
22.
Mitch Pinske went 4-1/3 innings for the win in the victory against the White Hawks.
Pinske struck out five batters
while walking four and allowing nine hits and five earned
runs.
Alex Troska earned the save
with 2-2/3 innings of hitless
work, striking out two and
walking one in a scoreless appearance.
“Mitch had kind of a rough
start, but he settled in and
took control of the game at
some points,” coach Dean
Schwirtz said. “When he has
control of his split finger
(pitch) he can be unhittable at
times. Mitch will only get better as the season progresses.”
It was a back-and-forth affair, with Mound Westonka
leading 2-1 after the first.
GSL took a 6-2 lead in the top
of the fourth, but the White
Hawks rallied to knot the
score at 6-all after the fifth.
The Panthers put away the
game with lone tallies in the
top of the sixth and seventh
frames while holding their
hosts scoreless.
Teddy Petersen went 3-for4 with two RBI and four runs
scored. Tristan Weber logged
a game-high four RBI on a 2for-3 day at the plate, with
Mitchell Boesche posting a 2for-4 game with two runs
scored.
“At the plate, Teddy and
Weber were key,” Schwirtz
said. “Teddy is a run factory.
He just makes things happen
with his constant pressure on
the defense. Weber has been
clutch with timely hitting.”
GSL kept its winning streak
alive in resounding manner
three days later with an eightrun besting of the host Cardinals. Starting pitcher Peyton
Sell went the distance, striking out five batters over seven
innings, while scattering two
hits and two walks and allowing no earned runs.
“(Sell) was great on the
mound. Out of 29 batters he
faced, he threw 18 first-pitch
strikes He was also able to
mix his pitches up and keep
them off balance,” Schwirtz
said.
Boesche was spotless at the
plate, going 4-for-4 with one
RBI and one run scored.
Mitch Kettner was 2-for-2
with one RBI and one run
scored, while Mitch Pinske
went 2-for-3 with two runs
scored and Petersen went 2for-4 with two runs and one
RBI.
“(Boesche) was the hot bat.

walking none; he gave up a
lone earned run in the second

runs. Bratsch and Erkenbrack
were each credited with an
RBI in the inning.

Frahm, Rachael Popp and
Hermann won in a time of
55.54.
The 4x200-meter relay of

ready for seedbed preparation
when soil in the depth of
tillage crumbles when
squeezed. Pre-plant tillage
when soils are wet can create
a cloddy seedbed that reduces
seed-to-soil contact. Achieving excellent seed-to-soil
contact is important for rapid
and uniform imbibition of
moisture by seeds. Tillage
when soils are wet also can
create a zone of compaction
just below the depth of tillage
that can restrict root development.
Sidewall compaction can
occur when planter disc
openers cut through wet finetextured soil, resulting in
compacted soil around the
seed that is difficult for nodal
roots to penetrate. In addition, seed furrows can open
following planting in such
conditions, resulting in poor
seed-to-soil contact and poor
stand establishment.
Optimize planting rate:
Optimal corn planting rates
vary somewhat with hybrid,
soil productivity, and expected yield. However, planting
rates of 34,000 to 36,000
seeds/acre generally maximize economic return in most
fields in Minnesota.

lowing guidelines for successful corn establishment
this spring:
Achieve good seed-to-soil
contact and root development: A firm seedbed at
planting is critical for good
seed-to-soil contact and establishment of the nodal roots
which develop near the soil
surface. A seedbed can be
considered too loose if one
sinks greater than one inch
when walking through the
field, but this can vary with
planting equipment. At the
same time, avoid excessive
pre-plant tillage, which can
result in surface crusting and
emergence problems if heavy
rainfall occurs prior to emergence. Excessive pre-plant
tillage also enhances the risk
of wind erosion and sandblasting to corn seedlings.
A planting depth of 2 inches is optimal for corn in most
situations in Minnesota. Shallow placement of seed increases the risk of poor nodal
root establishment. High
planting speeds that result in
bounce of planter units
should be avoided, as this can
result in shallow placement
of some seeds and variable
emergence.
Avoid tillage when soils
are wet: In general, a field is

Warm weather favors rapid planting
Source: Dave Nicolai, Extension educator, crops, University of Minnesota Extension.
Warm and dry conditions
allowed Minnesota farmers to
begin planting in earnest,
with significant progress in
planting small grain acreage
during the week ending April
17, according to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics
Service. Over one-half of the
sugarbeet acreage was planted during the week, resulting
in the largest percent of the
crop planted by this date on
record. There were 5.1 days
suitable for fieldwork.
Thirteen percent of Minnesota’s expected corn
acreage has been planted,
eight days ahead of the fiveyear average and three days
ahead of last year. Twentythree percent of the spring
wheat acreage has been planted, which is equal to the 5year average, but five days
behind last year.
Maximum corn yield in
Minnesota is generally obtained when planting occurs
in late April or early May. In
years when spring arrives
early, a mid-April planting
date can produce similar
yield if young plants are not
damaged by a freeze in May.
In years when few growing
degree days are accumulated
during late April and the first
half of May, maximum corn
yield also can be obtained
when planting occurs in midMay.

ircumstances may be stacked against you, which are leaving you feeling like the entire world opposes you
at every turn as you follow Jesus. The added piece is that your current pursuit of God could find you feeling like your paddling upstream against various perceptions. Perhaps a perception or two that is completely different from your reality and who you are at all. However, you who follow Christ are never bound by perceptions. Remember your reality! God sees you as His child; the Lord is not blind to your circumstances and uses them
for what is most important to Him. This may even be shaping you into His likeness through your current circumstances.
God uses the difficult things to strengthen your relationship with the Lord and continues preparing you for what is
ahead. Godly character is built in the difficult stretches. The battle against misconceived perceptions may continue
for a long time, so focus on your reality. The truth of who you are in God’s eyes has not changed. God alone is the
one who took away your sin and continues to transform you into His beautiful reality, as His magnificent creation.
So we fix our eyes not on what is seen (perceptions), but on what is unseen (reality), since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal 2 Corinthians 4:18. Perception is not your reality.
