Sports Editor
Well, it happened. I’ve returned to
the area as the sports editor of The
Chronicle after graduating in 2005
and telling myself that Glencoe would
remain in my rearview for the foresee-
able future.
My parents, Chuck and Linda
Randt, still live in town for the time
being and have graciously spared their
living room and home for myself and
all of my belongings while I try to
find an apartment. My brother, Matt,
lives in Glencoe, which I’m sure will
afford many more brotherly
outings/squabbles reminiscent of our
younger days. My grandmother, Ruth
Randt, also lives in Glencoe, as well
as a number of other relatives.
Despite the strong ties, I never real-
ly thought that I’d move back to the
area. As a youth, McLeod County did-
n’t offer much for entertainment. For
myself, there was fun to be had in ath-
letics, so it should be no surprise that
sports have brought me back to the
area.
During my time as a student at
GSL, I participated in football,
wrestling, basketball and baseball.
The latter two I never played or pur-
sued at the varsity level.
For a brief moment, I only played
football until some friends from the
wrestling room invited me to join
them. They brought me in midway
through an afternoon practice and let
me roll around with some of the guys.
Despite the grueling, and sometimes
torturous, practice routine of
wrestling, I stuck with the sport be-
cause it offered something to do dur-
ing the grueling, and sometimes tor-
turous, winter months.
When I first dressed for varsity
football games as a sophomore, I
couldn’t believe the number of people
in the crowd. Growing up in Glencoe,
I remembered the championship team
from 2000 and was an audience mem-
ber for a lot of those games. But when
you take the field wearing that varsity
uniform, even as a puny little sopho-
more, you feel an energy and excite-
ment that is unparalleled. That energy
and excitement is then amplified
when you earn a spot on varsity.
The same can be said about any
varsity sport; and I’m now tasked with
capturing that energy and excitement,
and conveying it in a way that makes
sense, but is also entertaining.
My road to this position is much
like my time in high school when I
was trying to figure out exactly which
sports to play. Except, choosing a ca-
reer is a little more serious than figur-
ing out if I wanted to shoot jump shots
or takedowns.
After a brief stint at the Minnesota
School of Business in Waite Park,
studying health and exercise sciences,
I worked full-time for about a year
and a half. I then enrolled at Minneso-
ta State University, Mankato and
graduated in May of 2012 with a
bachelor’s degree in mass communi-
cations with a focus in journalism.
As an undergrad, I interned at The
Enterprise in Glencoe for about two
months from January 2012 through
February of 2012, and worked at a
group home in Mankato for the last
two years of college.
I then worked temporarily at the
Hutchinson Leader for about two
months this past fall, filling in for a
writer in their newsroom, while con-
tinuing with my position at the group
home.
A full-time position as the editor of
the Lafayette Nicollet Ledger came
available in December of 2012, which
I accepted. I worked there for a little
over three months before accepting
the position here.
A former classmate sent me a mes-
sage on Facebook, notifying me that
the Chronicle/Leader was looking for
a sports editor. I was elated to think
that I might be able to cover athletics
in my hometown.
When I was still in high school, I
remember seeing Lee Ostrom with his
camera and notepad at all the different
athletic activities and thinking, “Wow.
He’s got the coolest job. He just talks
with people and takes pictures at local
sporting events, and then writes about
it.”
Meeting with Lee and the staff here
I was informed that Lee was really in
charge of the “toy department.” Toys
or not, the fact of the matter is that
Lee loved his position and that
showed through his work.
Lee stressed that I need to be my-
self and do things my way, but I can’t
help but look at what he’s done for
sports in the area during his time here,
and hope to emulate him just the
slightest bit. I’ll be me, but Lee has set
a standard of quality here that I would
like to maintain, because this position
isn’t about myself, it’s about the com-
munity.
Lee captured the 2003-04 state foot-
ball championship team that I was a
part of. He also covered the final
game ever to be played on Allen Field
the next year when I was a senior.
Without searching through almanacs
of newspapers, I can vividly recall the

The GSL gi rl s’ gol f t eam has
been utilizing the snow to breakup
indoor practices that most spring
sports team are faced with, to work
on physical, as well as mental, con-
ditioning.
Head coach Scott Eckhoff has
had his team cross country skiing
on the Glencoe golf course while
talking hole strategies. They’ve
also been practicing in the snow
with tennis balls in anticipation of
t he season opener on Monday,
April 8 at Waconia.
The Panthers will miss Caitlin
Miller from last year. Miller was a
six-time letter winner for the Pan-
thers and earned All Conference
honors at the end of last season,
with a 46.22 nine-hole stroke aver-
age.
Eckhoff has a team full of young,
promising golfers who will open up
opportunities for plenty of varsity
experience.
“Alexis Kerslake (sophomore)
finished the season strong last sea-
son,” Eckhoff said. “She advanced
to the second round of section play,
and we look for Alexis to be our
lead golfer this season.”
While Kerslake looks to be the
leader and build off of her 52.56
nine-hole average from last season,
three other sophomores with varsi-
ty experience are looking to be-
come st apl es on t he gi rl s’ gol f
team.
Ashlyn Ratike, Claire Wraspir
and Allie Eischens join Kerslake as
the most experienced members of
the team. Ratike had a 58.78 nine-
hole average, Wraspir a 61.44 and
Eischens a 66.33.
“All three of these girls have
shown steady improvements with
each year of experience,” Eckhoff
said. “Elizabeth Gran (sophomore)
is in her second year and played
good golf toward the end of last
season, and Madeline Kuehn and
Jenna Lokensgard (freshmen) show
good promise as young golfers.”
Whi l e f i el di ng such a young
t eam may gi ve some coaches a
cause for concern, Eckhoff has
young golfers with varsity experi-
ence that could lead to success, if
not this season, in seasons to come.
“We are returning five golfers
with varsity experience, and we
look to have improved individual
and team scores from last year,”
Eckhoff said.
The Panthers finished eighth out
of 10 teams in the Wright County
Conference last season. While los-
ing a steady golfer like Miller may
not improve the chances of moving
up in the conference, it will allow
this young team to grow together
and gai n i nval uabl e experi ence
moving forward.
Working with such a young team,
Eckhoff said the key to success for
this year’s team lies within their
mental psyche.
“Golf is such a mental game,”
Eckhoff said. “We will really stress
the mental aspect of golf along
with good techniques and making
good golf decisions. We need to
have consistent play from each of
our varsity golfers.”

Who owned this trophy?
Ron Knick of Brownton, a former Glencoe street depart-
ment employee, found this trophy marked Miss Glencoe
1936. He was emptying garbage cans on 12th Street for
the city in 1971 when he found the trophy had been
thrown away. He kept it, and now is seeking more infor-
mation about the trophy and who it belonged to. He
added he has no idea who Miss Glencoe 1936 was either.
