4H shooting sports season opens tomorrow at fairgrounds

Youth from across McLeod County can join the 2020 4-H shooting sports project kick off Thursday, Jan. 16, 7 to 9 p.m., at the Little Crow Archery Building on the McLeod County Fairgrounds in Hutchinson.
4-H shooting sports is led by screened, certified instructors who teach safety, concentration, self-discipline, self-confidence, goal setting, decision-making and courtesy as the young people learn basic skills and build toward more advanced activities. Both competitive and cooperative skills are included. Participants are exposed to local policies, regulations, laws and ethical behavior both by repeated demonstration and through personal practice.
The program’s goals include teaching shooting sports as a hands-on project where students learn the proper way to use air pistols, air rifles, BB guns, .22-caliber rifles, shotguns, archery, and black-powder guns. The teachers promote learning about wildlife and the environment and our impact on it through conservation projects, promoting standards of safety, sportsmanship and ethical behavior in the use of firearms and archery equipment, and encouraging parents to participate in all aspects of the project.
The shooting disciplines include wildlife for kindergarten and older students, archery and BB gun shooting for third-graders and up, air rifle/pistol for fourth-graders and up, .22-caliber rifle/pistol, muzzle loading and shotgun shooting for seventh-graders and up.
McLeod County 4-H has bows, air rifles, pistols, and shotguns. Students should bring ammunition and safety glasses.
Winter practices for archery, BB guns, air rifle/pistol on Thursday at the fairgrounds run from Jan. 16 to April 9. Summer practices for archery, BB gun, air rifle/pistol, shotgun, .22-caliber rifle, muzzle loading on Tuesdays run from May 19 to Sept. 8.
