For the seventh time in the
last 10 years, the Glencoe-Sil-
ver Lake boys’ track and field
team is a conference champi-
on. The Panthers claimed their
latest title on Tuesday, May 12
by winning the Wright County
Conference West champi-
onship meet on their home
track.
GSL not only won the
championship, the squad did it
in a convincing manner by
scoring 178 points. WCC
West runner-up New London-
Spicer at 102.5 points was the
only other team to record
triple-digits at the competi-
tion.
“It was very neat to win a
conference title,” coach Josh
Metcalf said. “Winning seven
of 10 titles is pretty dominant
for one school.”
The Panthers won 11 of 18
events at the meet in rolling to
the title and were dominant
across the board in sprint and
distance events, as well as
relay and field competitions.
“To not only win it, but win
it convincingly, was pretty ex-
citing,” Metcalf said.
GSL’s throwers had a great
day, claiming first-place fin-
ishes in both shot put and dis-
cus. Jacob Litzau earned the
conference shot put title with
a toss of 43 feet, 9.5 inches,
with Grayson Maresh doing
likewise in the discus with a
fling of 121-09 – 2 1/2 feet
better than the runner-up fin-
isher.
Giovanni Ramirez claimed
a third field-event conference
title by winning the pole vault
in clearing 10-0.
Kyle Beck doubled-up on
conference sprint champi-
onships, winning both the
100- and 200-meter dashes
with respective times of 11.49
and 23.20 seconds.
Panthers runners kept pace
as the distances increased.
Aaron Giesen seized the con-
ference 400-meter dash title in
52.44, while Brandon Richter
cruised to the 800-meter dash
title in two minutes, 1.36 sec-
onds – nearly a full second
faster than his seed time of
2:02.33.
When the distances hit
1600- and 3200-meters, Jac
Chelman and Isiah Herout
were up to the challenge, as
the pair finished 1-2 in both
events.
“We knew based on how
strong our distance runners
were that we were going to
score a lot of points in those
events,” Metcalf said.
Chelman took first in both
races, finishing the 1600 in
4:41. 80 and the 3200 in
10:31.73. Herout was right on
Chelman’s tail in both runner-
up efforts, running a 4:43.85
in the 1600 and a 10:32.79 in
the 3200. Another GSL senior,
Garrett Ober, made it a happy
trio in the 3200 by claiming
third place in the event with a
10:37.32.
The Panthers also earned a
pair of conference relay cham-
pionships by taking top honors
in both the 4x400- and 4x800-
meter relays.
The team of Giesen,
Michael Schaefer, Patrick
Kunkel and Richter won the
4x400 by just under a second-
and-a-half in 3:35.28, while
the quartet of Garret Ardolf,
Schaefer, Ober and Richter
ran away with the 4x800 with
a time of 8:40.13.
In addition to his contribu-
tions to two relay victories,
Schaefer was second to only
Richter in the 800, finishing
second in a time of 2:06.99.
GSL claimed points in all
four relay events, with the
4x100-meter relay squad of
Dylan Melchert, Mason
Ahlbrecht, Shane Ehrke and
Mitchell Rothstein placing
third in 46.76 and the 4x200-
meter relay foursome of Beck,
Agustin Mendoza, Kunkel and
Giesen taking fifth in 1:39.68.
Ehrke tied for second in the
high jump by clearing 5-8 and
placed sixth in the long jump
at 18-5.50. Rothstein earned a
second-place finish in the
triple jump by landing an ef-
fort of 38-6.
Tyler Ehrke earned GSL
points in both hurdling events,
placing fourth in the 110-
meter hurdles in 18.71 and
coming in sixth in the 300-
meter hurdles with a result of
47.63. Zachary Pierson was
sixth in the 110 hurdles in
18.9.
Mendoza individually se-
cured GSL points in two
events, by taking fourth in the
100 (11.88) and sixth in the
200 (24.41). Also earning
points individually for the
Panthers were Austin
Schroepfer, by means of a
fifth-place result of 4:56.91 in
the 1600 and Ardolf, by taking
fifth in the 800 with a 2:10.89.
“I think overall, we outper-
formed what was thought to
be realistic for us,” Metcalf
said. “Winning 11 events and
scoring in all 18 events, it was
truly a team championship.
All the athletes contributed.”
The WCC West champi-
onship now in the books, Met-
calf’s team is prepared for this
week’s subsectional competi-
tion. GSL also hosts the Sec-
tion 2A subsection meet on
Thursday. Individuals qualify-
ing from Thursday’s meet ad-
vance to compete in the Sec-
tion 2A championship meet,
which is scheduled for Satur-
day, May 30 at Mankato West
High School.
“Conference is our team
goal. Now that it’s subsection,
we want to advance individu-
als and relays to section,”
Metcalf said. “We are in a
pretty tough subsection. We
all have to be on.”

Cold and blustery condi-
tions at Vollmer Field Mon-
day evening could not chill
the Glencoe-Silver Lake
baseball team’s collective joy
after the Panthers claimed
the Wright County Confer-
ence West championship
with a 6-2 defeat of visiting
Annandale.
“Like any year or any
sport were very happy to be
winners of the Wright Coun-
ty West division,” coach
Dean Schwirtz said. “Any-
time you're able to beat the
quality teams that we have in
the WCC it's a big accom-
plishment.”
While the Cardinals took a
1-0 lead in their first turn at
the plate, GSL roared ahead
for good with three runs in
both the second and third in-
nings. Annandale managed
one more run in the fourth,
but never seriously chal-
lenged the host’s superiority
under slate gray skies.
Starting pitcher Tanner
Grack was not to be denied a
conference title, giving up
just three hits with an equal
number of walks while strik-
ing out six and allowing just
one earned run in a com-
plete-game gem.
Teddy Petersen led the
Panthers’ offensive attack by
going 3-for-3 with two RBI
out of the leadoff spot.
Mason Goettl – who claimed
a stolen base — Tristan
Weber, Mitch Pinske and
Reed Wawrzyniak tallied one
RBI apiece. Tyler Chap and
Tristan Weber each scored
twice, with Weber also steal-
ing a pair of bases. Bennett
Bielke, Tyler Chap and
Wawrzyniak were all mem-
bers of the two-hit club in
the game.
The win was GSL’s third
in a row, with the Panthers
heading into Tuesday’s game
against Mayer Lutheran with
an opportunity to notch the
team’s third four-game win-
ning streak of the season.
GSL’s previous four-game
win streak was halted before
it reached five by means of a
4-2 loss at Dassel-Cokato on
Wednesday, May 13. The
two teams split their regular-
season series at a game
apiece.
The Panthers also split the
season series with just one
other team – WCC West run-
ner-up Litchfield. However,
the Dragons finished one
game behind GSL in the final
West standings following

“It was a special night for
GSL girls golf.”
Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’
golf coach Scott Eckhoff
summed up the feelings of the
team after the Panthers
clinched a third-place finish in
the Wright County Confer-
ence West and also saw three
of their individuals earn all-
conference honors.
Seniors Alexis Kerslake,
Ashlyn Ratike and Claire
Wraspir were each conferred
with all-conference plaques
after clinching qualifying top-
nine finishes in the final WCC
West individual standings.
“Having all three of our
seniors be all-conference was
a great accomplishment,”
Eckhoff said.
Kerslake finished fifth in
the West with a 46.25 stroke
average. Ratike was seventh
at 47.75 and Wraspir tied for
ninth at 49.38.
The Panthers laid their final
claim on third place at the
conference tournament on
Monday in a 13-team Charger
Invitational hosted by Dassel-
Cokato at Albion Ridges Golf
Course in Annandale.
The invitational, which in-
cluded all the teams from the
WCC West and East other
than Hutchinson, also counted
as the final conference meet.
GSL finished third behind
WCC West champion Litch-
field, and Orono. The Pan-
thers carded a team score of
191 in the meet, which was
shortened from 18 to nine
holes on account of poor
weather.
“We put together our best
golf of the season with this
final conference golf event,”
Eckhoff said. “The conditions
were extremely poor but the
girls played with great atti-
tudes and all six golfers
played excellent golf for the
conditions.”
Individually, Wraspir led
the way for GSL with a per-
sonal-best nine-hole score of
46, which proved crucial for
her all-conference qualifica-
tion. Ratike posted a 47, with
Kerslake and Lindsay Wedin
each logging a 49 to account
for the team score. Jenna Lo-
kensgard and Rachel Reichow
recorded personal-best nine-
hole scores of 51 and 53, re-
spectively.
In the end, GSL recorded
1,996 strokes as a team to
earn third place in the final
West standings. Litchfield
won the conference again with
1,883 total strokes and Annan-
dale took second at 1,972.
Mound Westonka was fourth
at 2,007.
“With sections coming up
we wanted to end the season
with a strong team showing
and we accomplished this,”
Eckhoff said. “We are going
into sections with confi-
dence.”
The upcoming Section 5AA
Tournament is scheduled to
take place over two days, May
28 and June 1, at Pebble
Creek Golf Course in Becker.

A 1-2 record in the final
week of regular-season play
gave the Glencoe-Silver Lake
softball team a 6-8 overall
record as the squad headed
into postseason on Tuesday.
The Panthers wrapped up
Wright County Conference
West play with a 6-3 mark.
GSL snagged a No. 7 sub-
sectional seed for the Section
2AA Tournament, which
began at second-seeded Belle
Plaine after the Chronicle
went to press. If the Panthers
claimed the opening-round tri-
umph, a subsectional semifi-
nal at either Jordan or Nor-
wood Young America awaits
on Thursday, May 21. The
sectional semifinals and finals
are slated to take place at
Caswell Park in North Manka-
to on Saturday, May 23.
As for the final stretch of
the regular season, GSL sand-
wiched a final conference win
in-between a pair of losses.
The Panthers last regular-
season came on Wednesday,
May 13 in a 6-2 defeat of
Mound Westonka. Pitcher
Moriah Maunu struck out five
while scattering seven hits and
four walks in the contest, giv-
ing up the two earned runs
over seven innings. Piper
Davis knocked in three RBI
on a 2-for-4 day, while Becca
Green notched two RBI in
also going 2-for-4. Maddy
Kalenberg went 3-for-3 with
three runs scored.
One day earlier, the Pan-
thers were done in by a six-
run first inning by visiting De-
lano in a 9-6 loss to the
Tigers. GSL claimed a six-run
frame of its own in the second
frame, but could manage no
further scoring while the visi-
tors put up two runs in the
fourth and one more in the
seventh. Only three of De-
lano’s nine runs were earned
off Maunu, who struck out
seven batters. Kalenberg and
Maunu each logged two RBI
apiece, with six different play-
ers scoring for GSL.
The regular season closed
out with a game that was orig-
inally intended to begin the
spring campaign.
A rescheduled game at New
Prague ended the Panthers’
pre-playoff slate on a down
note, however, as the Trojans
claimed a 13-1, five-inning
defeat of the visitors. Green
plated Jordan Rolf with GSL’s
lone run of the contest.

The Glencoe-Silver Lake
girls’ track and field team
concluded its regular season
schedule by earning a third-
place finish in the Wright
County Conference West
championship meet on Tues-
day, May 12. The Panthers
recorded 93.75 points on their
home track, with Litchfield
winning the WCC West title
and Annandale placing sec-
ond.
Kirsten Barott won one of
the three conference titles
earned by GSL individuals,
Barott topped the charts in the
pole vault competition, win-
ning the West with a vault of
eight feet even. Joining Barott
among the top pole vaulters
were Courtney Konen, who
was credited with third place
after also attaining an 8-foot
vault, and Teanna Vorlicek,
who took fifth after clearing
7-0.
Emily Muetzel won the
West championship in the
400-meter dash, taking first
place in the finals with a time
of one minute, 1.42 seconds –
more than a second ahead of
her closest competition.
Muetzel was also part of
the conference-winning
4x200-meter relay team. She
joined fellow victors Taylor
Novak, Maddie Monahan and
Shelby Clouse to win the two-
lap event by nearly four full
seconds with a time of
1:51.43.
All four GSL relay teams
earned top-four placements at
the meet.
The 4x400-meter team of
Muetzel, Novak, Monahan
and Elise Graupmann took
second in 4:16.22, just .11 off
the winning quartet.
The 4x100-meter squad of
Jamie Kosek, Callie Raduenz,
Marlaina Chelman and
Rachael Popp took third in
55.37 seconds. The 4x800-
meter quartet of Gia Venier,
Annamaria Falcon, Tarin
Michaelis and Erica Hecksel
placed fourth in 10:56.89.
Monahan ran to a runner-up
finish in the 300-meter hur-
dles with a time of 49.21.
Clouse placed third in the
100-meter dash in 13.20 and
fourth in the 200-meter dash
in 27.42. Megan Siewert also
took third place after her run
of 12:35.65 in the 3200-meter
run. Falcon ran to sixth in the
1600-meter run in 6:02.07.
Taryn Reichow claimed
points for the Panthers both
on the track and in the field.
She placed sixth in the 100-
meter hurdles with a 18.33
and fifth in the high jump at
4-6.
Deanna Bondhus leapt her
way to a pair of fourth-place
results, recording a 14-6 in
the long jump and posting a
31-0.50 in the triple jump.
With the conference meet
now behind them, the Pan-
thers have been preparing for
this week’s subsection com-
petition. GSL also hosts the
Section 2A subsection meet
on Thursday. Individuals

Brian Graupmann and his fellow Plato Blue Jays
are on the road for two more games before their
home opener on May 30.
Blue Jays now 3-0
By Tom Carothers
Sports Editor
The Plato Blue Jays have
proven to be excellent road
warriors. Plato remained
undefeated on the season,
winning the third contest of
a five-game road swing to
begin the season on Sun-
day, May 17, defeating
Carver by a score of 8-3.
The Blue Jays, now 3-0,
are playing away from
home to start the season
due to renovations being
made at the stadium. Plato
actually trailed for the first
time this spring in the early
innings at Carver after the
Black Sox went on top 1-0
in the first inning. Carver
continued to hold onto a 3-
2 lead after five innings
when the rains fell and held
up the contest for a half an
hour.
The rain delay served to
rejuvenate the visitors,
however, as the Blue Jays
seized control of the game
with one run in the seventh
and two in the eighth be-
fore finishing off matters
with a trio of runs in the
ninth. In the end, the Blue
Jays’ 15-hit attack was
more than enough to make
up for three defensive er-
rors in the five-run victory.
Adam Prehn claimed the
win with six innings of re-
lief work after starting
pitcher Tony Wischnack

West individual standings on Monday. Her stroke average of 46.25 this spring
helped lead the Panthers to a third-place team finish in the WCC West.
The McLeod County Chronicle, www.glencoenews.com, Wednesday, May 20, 2015, page 3B
The following is a run-
down of results and high-
lights regarding Glencoe-Sil-
ver Lake junior varsity teams
from the past week.
Baseball
The GSL baseball team
went 4-0 last week, including
two tournament wins in Min-
neapolis on Saturday, May
16.
On Tuesday, May 12, the
Panthers claimed a 13-0
shutout victory against
Mound Westonka, with start-
ing Peyton Sell tossing the
five-inning complete game
win. Sell also went 3-for-3 at
the plate with a team-high
three RBI. Alex Schrader
went 2-for-4 with two RBI,
while Axel Schulz was 2-for-
2 with two RBI. Cam Chap
and Luke Frahm also gar-
nered two hits apiece in the
blanking.
GSL followed up that
Wright County Conference
win with another the next
day, topping Dassel-Cokato
by a score of 8-7. Starter
Alex Troska pitched six in-
nings for the win, with Sell
earning a one-inning save.
Troska knocked in three runs
on a 2-for-3 day, with Cole
Mathews also claiming two
RBI. Schulz went 2-for-2.
At the tournament, the Pan-
thers opened up their two-
game set with a 12-2 blasting
of Spring Lake Park behind a
five-inning complete game
win from Mathews. Troska
accounted for half of GSL’s
runs with six RBI in a 3-for-4
effort. Jacob VonBerge and
Schrader both went 2-for-2,
with two and one RBI, re-
spectively. Chap and Nick
Schmidt each had two hits in
the game.
A wild affair against Frid-
ley wrapped up the weekend
as the Panthers held on to top
the Tigers 10-8 in eight in-
nings. The contest was tied 3-
3 after the seventh before the
teams exploded for a com-
bined 12 runs in the added
frame.
Starter VonBerge went six
innings before Schmidt came
on in relief and took the win
with one inning of work, with
Troska pitching one inning as
well for the save. VonBerge
hit a home run in the game to
highlight a 2-for-5, two RBI
afternoon at the plate. Chap
knocked in three runs while
going 2-for-5, with Mathews
knocking in two runs with a
pair of hits.
The Panthers wrap up their
season with two games this
week.
Softball
The GSL softball team lost
both of the games it played
last week, falling 18-0 to De-
lano on Tuesday, May 12 and
11-7 to New Prague three
days later to conclude its sea-
son.
Destiny Talbot-Senn, Lexi
Hansch and Ashlyn Stuewe
each recorded one of the Pan-
thers’ three total hits against
Delano.
Versus New Prague, GSL
held a 7-6 lead into the bot-
tom of the sixth before the
Trojans turned the tables on
their visitors with a five-run
frame to settle the game out
of the Panthers’ favor.
Stuewe led her squad’s of-
fense with three RBI, with
Colbie Kuras scoring twice
after reaching base via both
hit and walk. GSL logged
five hits in the game, each
coming off the bat of a differ-
ent player.
Assistant coach Gina Prehn
noted that Isabell Mallak was
missed at the Mound Weston-
ka Tournament on May 9.

The Brownton Bruins slipped past
St. Bonifacius 4-3 Saturday to pre-
serve its perfect season start, scoring
a run in the top of the ninth to break a
3-3 tie.
The Saints took an early 3-0 lead
with a run in the second and two in
the third. The Saints’ Mike Drber sin-
gled in the second inning to plate
Dan Jede, who had walked and stolen
second base. In the third, Jake Hen-
dricks got on base on a defensive
error and scored on Max Gregory’s
double. Gregory scored on a base hit
by Jede.
The Bruins cut the Saints’ lead to
3-2 with two runs in the fifth. Deryk
Randt drew a walk to start the inning.
Two outs later, he scored on Dylan
McCormick’s double. McCormick
reached third on a wild pitch, and
also scored on a wild pitch.
The Bruins evened the score at 3-3
with a run in the eighth. Lucas Doel-
ger walked, and Jaden Katzenmeyer
came in as a courtesy runner. Katzen-
meyer reached second on Bryce Lin-
deman’s sacrifice bunt, and scored on
Randt’s double.
In the top of the ninth, Schuette
singled with one away to get on base,
then stole second. He reached third
on an error, and scored on Chad
Genz’ sacrifice bunt.
Relief pitcher Ryan Grams retired
the Saints in order in the bottom of
the ninth to preserve the win for
Brownton.
Josh Wendlandt started for Brown-
ton, giving up three runs, two earned,
on 12 hits as he struck out eight and
walked one in 7
1
⁄3 innings. Reliever
Grams earned the win, going 1
2
⁄3 in-
nings, in which he allowed no runs or
hits, struck out three and walked one.
Gregory led the Saints’ battery
with four of the team’s 12 hits, while
Jede and Drber contributed two each.
Brownton had five hits, with
Schuette getting two and Randt, Matt
Schwichtenberg and McCormick
contributing one each.
Gregory started for the Saints and
pitched four innings in which he gave
up no runs on two hits as he struck
out seven and walked four. Tony
Carlson pitched two-thirds of an in-
ning, allowing two runs on no hits
with one strikeout and one walk. Jack
Standard pitched the final 4
1
⁄3 innings,
giving up two runs on three hits as he
struck out five and walked five.
The Bruins’ Sunday game with
Hamburg was postponed because of
inclement weather, and is yet to be
rescheduled.
Brownton, now 5-0 overall and 4-0
in the Crow River Valley League,
will host the Fairfax Cardinals
tonight (Wednesday) at 7:30 p.m. for
a non-league game. The Bruins re-
turn to their league schedule Sunday,
hosting the 2-2 Carver Black Sox at 2
p.m.

GSL Silver streaks through spring unbeaten
The Glencoe-Silver Lake Silver
fourth-sixth grade girls’ soccer team
went undefeated this season. Team
members are: front, Cassidy Rislund;

and Breann Goff; back row from left,

clinching win.
“This team does not
worry about who gets the
credit,” Schwirtz said.
“Each kid goes out and does
his job and if he does it that
do it to the best of his abili-
ties somebody else is usual-
ly there to pick them up.
Each win that we've had this
year I believe is a true team
effort.”
Sandwiched in-between
the most recent and final
conference matchups, the
Panthers traveled to Min-
neapolis for a two-game
tournament on Saturday,
May 16.
GSL made the excursion
count, winning both of its
games against metro-area
opponents. The Panthers
took down Spring Lake
Park 4-1 and bested Fridley
4-2 for their 12th and 13th
wins of the spring.
Mitch Boesche went six
innings for the win against
Fridley, with Alex Romano
tossing the seventh inning
for the save. Jacob Popelka
went all seven innings for
the complete-game win
against Spring Lake Park.
With Tuesday’s regular-
season finale in the books,
Schwirtz’s squad now pre-
pares for the Section 2AA
Tournament, doing so as the
top seed in the northern sub-
sectional.
After going 14-4 with an
8-2 conference record head-
ing into Tuesday’s determi-
nation of seedings, GSL
earned the No. 1 slot for the
playoff opener and will host
eighth-seeded LeSueur-
Henderson on Friday at 4:30
p.m.
“Our subsection is a very
difficult subsection. Any
team one through eight I can
honestly see winning it,”
Schwirtz said. “If we con-
tinue to do the little things
like throwing strikes and
making the routine defen-
sive plays I think we have
as good as chance of anyone
coming out of it.”

Hardy and hopeful
W
e Minnesotans, if for no other reason than our geographical location, are story tellers. The great
winter storms of the past and water that froze before it hit the ground are just a few of them we pass
on to the generations behind us. It’s true we can be scoffed at because of statements like, “Oh, I’m
not too awful bad.” when being asked about our personal well-being and people in other parts of the United
States actually think we have an accent! Imagine that!! But telling stories, yes, even the Texans perk up when
someone begins an Ole and Sven tale! And, of course, though we are in the last half of May, we know it is still
too soon to pack away our winter wear. No matter how understated the hardy people of the Midwest may sound,
we are an inherently hopeful people; why else would we live here?
In fact, as we experience another shivery cold day, trusting that the promised warmer weather will come soon,
I am reminded of the first Pentecost! The book of Acts opens with Jesus instructing the first disciples to remain
in Jerusalem until they were baptized with the Holy Spirit. Ordinary people, fearful, scoffed at, yet inherently
hopeful, waited for the promised Holy Spirit. The story is told that there was a mighty rush of wind and tongues
of flame settled on each of the disciples, transforming their timidity into boldness…and so the Church came into
being. Nearly two thousand years have passed, yet the hardy and inherently hopeful still celebrate the gift of the
Holy Spirit and tell of God’s creative and redeeming love in Jesus Christ for all people! Despite the sin, death,
and destruction evidenced in our world, we trust in his promised return and the making of all things new! In the
meantime, we torch bearers have the greatest story ever told to share and live by.
This weekly message is contributed by the following concerned citizens and businesses who
urge you to attend the church of your choice. To be added to this page, contact us at 320-864-5518.
