A three-run home run from Mason
Goettl helped the Glencoe-Silver
Lake baseball team hold off an upset
bid on the part of LeSueur-Hender-
son and win its Section 2AA Tourna-
ment opener 4-2 on Friday, May 22
at Vollmer Field.
The Panthers, the top seed in the
north subsection, looked prepped to
make short work of the eighth-seed-
ed Giants under sunny skies. Teddy
Petersen led off the bottom of the
first inning with a hard double into
the left field corner before a fielding
error put No. 2 hitter Bennett Bielke
on at second base with Petersen
moving to third with nobody out.
Goettl promptly brought both run-
ner home with a booming shot over
the left-center field wall to make the
score 3-0. The Panthers appeared
poised to tack a few more runs on
the board as Tyler Chap and Peyton
Sell both logged one-out singles, but
LSH starting pitcher Tyler Kotasek
limited the damage by stranding both
runners.
GSL starter Alex Romano cruised
through the first two innings before
allowing a run on three singles in the
third. The score remained 3-1 into
the fifth before the Giants notched
another run on a leadoff triple and
sacrifice fly to pull within a single
score.
With the game proving a bit too
close for comfort, the Panthers
recorded an insurance run in the bot-
tom of the fifth. Petersen got on base
with a one-out single, then stole sec-
ond and advanced to third base on a
throwing error.
He was brought home on a Bielke

fied for the sectional final

A 6-3 loss at Belle Plaine
in the opening round of the
Section 2AA Tournament on
Tuesday, May 19 brought an
end to the season for the
Glencoe-Silver Lake softball
team. The Panthers’ 2015
campaign came to a close
with a 6-9 overall record.
Belle Plaine, seeded sec-
ond in the 2AA north subsec-
tion, seized a 3-0 lead in the
bottom of the first and dou-
bled that edge to 6-0 by the
time No. 7 seed GSL had its
first baserunner in the top of
the fifth.
“We just gave up a few too
many runs in the first in-
ning,” coach Steve Davis
said. “And we had a hard
time against their pitcher at
first. Once we got adjusted
and put the ball in play, we
did better.”
Rachel Rusten broke up
Tigers pitcher Maddie
Haller’s no-hitter with a one-
out bloop single that fell in-
between the shortstop and
left fielder. Rusten advanced
as far as third base on a two-
out throwing error, but was
stranded there.
The Panthers weren’t
cooked just yet, however. In
the sixth inning, Layne Her-
rmann worked out a walk to
give the visitors a baserunner
with one out. Ryley Oliver
came on to run for Herrmann
– and run she did. Maddy
Kalenberg drove home Oliv-
er with a double, took third
on a throw to the plate, and
then scored herself on a
throwing error to give GSL
two sudden runs and new life
in the contest.
With Panthers pitcher Mo-
riah Maunu shutting down
the hosts after allowing a
two-out home run in the
fourth, GSL remained in the
game into its final turn at the
plate in the seventh.
Ellie Lepel drove home
Rusten with a two-out single
in the final frame to bring the
Panthers to within three runs,
but that proved to be the final
tally GSL would score this
spring. Haller shut the door
with the last of her 16 strike-
outs on the afternoon to end
the game and eliminate the
Panthers from the postsea-
son.
“The girls fought the
whole way, much like the
season,” Davis said. “The
season didn’t go quite the
way we wanted, but the girls
held their heads high.”
With season’s end, GSL
bids farewell to six seniors,
with Lepel, Rusten, Courtney
Zajicek, Becca Green, Piper
Davis and Josie Schmitt all
slated to graduate this Friday.

Brewers fall back to .500
By Tom Carothers
Sports Editor
The Glencoe Brewers fell
back to .500 after two losses
over the Memorial Day
weekend.
Hutchinson proved to be
rude visitors on their trip to
Vollmer Field on Thursday,
May 21, hanging a 10-2 loss
on the host Brewers to bring
a previous two-game win-
ning streak to an end.
The Huskies put up two in
the top of the first inning,
then broke the game open
with four in the third.
Glencoe countered with a
lone run in the second and
fifth, but Hutchinson re-
mained well out front with
one in the fourth, two in the
eighth and one in the ninth
en route to the eight-run win.
Both teams committed
four errors apiece, with the
Huskies out-hitting the
Brewers 13-4.
Colt Trebesch and Derek
Weber scored the runs for
Glencoe, Weber’s coming by
means of a home run in the
big blast of the day for the
home side.
Starting pitcher Justin
Erkenbrack pitched four in-
nings and took the loss.
The Brewers returned to
Crow River League play on
Monday, falling 10-6 at
North Division foe Winsted.
The host Wildcats put up a
six-spot in the first inning for
nearly all the runs they need-
ed to win. Winsted’s three-
run fifth proved to be the dif-
ference with Glencoe rally-
ing in the final frames.
Josh Kraby and Travis
Rothstein logged two RBI
apiece, with Brandon Ebert
scoring twice for the Brew-
ers.
Starting pitcher Jaime Pau-
men took the loss after five
innings of work.
Glencoe plays at Waconia
on Thursday, hosts Norwood
Friday and travels to Dassel-
Cokato on Saturday.

Brownton Bruins’ skip-
per Doug Schuette took ad-
vantage of the May 20 ex-
hibition game against Fair-
fax to give his reserves
some significant playing
time.
They came through for
their manager, pulling out a
6-2 win to preserve the
Bruins’ spotless season
record, which is now 6-0
overall and 4-0 in the Crow
River Valley League.
Brownton’s Sunday
game against Carver was
called because of the rainy
weather, and has yet to be
rescheduled. The Sunday,
May 17, game against
Hamburg, which also was
victim to foul weather, has
been rescheduled to Tues-
day, June 30, at Barney
Tadsen Field in Brownton.
After giving up a first-in-
ning run to Fairfax, Brown-
ton scored two runs in the
third to take a 2-1 lead.
Spencer Glaeser and Deryk
Randt both singled with
one out, with Glaeser scor-
ing on Matt Schwichten-
berg’s sacrifice fly and
Randt reaching home on a
Dylan McCormick single.
After allowing the Cardi-
nals to score in the top of
the fourth, Bryce Lindeman
scored the Bruins’ third run
of the game almost all by
himself in bottom frame.
After walking, he reached
second on Seth Schuette’s
sacrifice bunt, then scooted
his way to third and home
on wild pitches.
The Bruins finished their
scoring with three runs in
the seventh. Jaden Katzen-
meyer and Ryan Grams
both singled to start the
Bruins’ half of the inning,
with Katzenmeyer eventu-
ally scoring on a wild pitch
and Grams scoring on an
error. Schwichtenberg
drove in a run with a sin-
gle.
Jeff Wendlandt started
for the Bruins giving up
two runs, one earned, on
four hits as he struck out
two and walked two in
three innings. Grams
pitched four innings of re-
lief and was awarded the
win, as he gave up just two
hits and struck out five.
Schwichtenberg took a turn
on the mound, throwing the
final two innings and giv-
ing up one hit and striking
out one.
The Bruins had nine hits
to the Cardinals’ seven.
Seth Schuette had two hits
and Glaeser, Randt,
Schwichtenberg, Mc-
Cormick, Lindeman,
Katzenmeyer and Grams
each had one.
The Bruins have a three-
game run on the road this
week. They traveled to
Cologne on Tuesday and
will head to Young Ameri-
ca Friday and Plato on Sun-
day.

RBI single that brought the
scoreboard count to its
would-be final.
Romano allowed LSH just
one single over their final two
at-bats, ending any hopes the
visitors might have had of
toppling the subsection’s
pole-sitter. The junior hurler
went the distance, allowing
eight hits, one walk and two
earned runs over seven in-
nings while striking out four.
Petersen and Bielke record-
ed two hits apiece, with GSL
amassing just seven hits total
– just three after the first in-
ning.
Kotasek, who appeared on
the verge of being knocked
out in the first inning, also
logged a complete game with
seven hits and three earned
runs allowed while striking
out six.
The Panthers took on Nor-
wood Young America in the
second round of subsection
play on Tuesday evening after
the Chronicle went to press.
GSL won 7-6 at NYA on Fri-
day, May 8.

“The ‘Long, Long, Long, …’ Creed”
S
o why do we need creeds? Is the Bible not enough? Yes, the Word of God is sufficient, the Bible contains
everything we need to know for salvation. However, sometimes in church history, the church has had to
reaffirm and clarify its beliefs when faced with the challenges of false teachers.
This coming Sunday will be the celebration of the Holy Trinity in many of our churches and we will confess
that “long, long, long, …” creed. Let’s talk about the Athanasian Creed. What does it say that the others do not?
This creed focuses upon and confesses what the Bible says about God the Father, God the Son, and God the
Holy Spirit and their relationship to each other as the Bible gives it to us. But, “there are not three Gods, there is
only one God.” It is a mystery as to how this is true, but nevertheless it is what the Bible says and what the
Christian Church has confessed from its very beginning and continues to confess today. It also expresses, accu-
rately, what the Bible teaches about the co-equality of each person of the Trinity. In other words, no one person
of the Trinity is the “boss” of the other, none is of higher “rank” than the other. Once again, this is a mystery,
but it is true- they work together. There is more, but these are enough examples.
So, why do we take time to confess this “long, long, long, …” creed? We confess in this creed clearly what
we believe about the Holy Trinity to avoid confusion and help prevent false teachers from sowing doubt among
believers. But, also, to be faithful in our witness concerning the Holy Trinity and to everything the Lord has
given to us- forgiveness, life, and salvation- through the life, suffering, death, and resurrection of our Savior
Jesus Christ! Amen, amen, amen!
This weekly message is contributed by the following concerned citizens and businesses who
urge you to attend the church of your choice. To be added to this page, contact us at 320-864-5518.

As a possible relief for
staff space issues, the
McLeod County Board of
Commissioners voted to form
a work group to discuss the
feasibility of allowing staff
telecommuting at its May 19
meeting.
The idea came as one of
the recommendations made
by the personnel committee.
The work group will include
Gary Sprynczynatyk, Vince
Traver, Linda Senst and Mary
Jo Wieseler. A 90-day dead-
line was added.
The county will increase
all wages on Aug. 1 to the
new Minnesota minimum
wage of $9 if they are below
that. Some employees will be
benefited.
The board voted to hire a
full-time communications of-
ficer due to a resignation.
Approved was the previous
promotion of a public health
nurse (grade 24) to a school
nurse (grade 25). This was an
oversight of timely process-
ing and was to be effective
Dec. 2, 2013.
The board voted to hire a
28-hour public health nurse
(grade 24) if no one applies
for the public health nurse
position. Or the county can
consider hiring a 28-hour reg-
istered nurse (grade 22) due
to a resignation.
A new job description for
the mental health profession-
al/team lead was approved.
There will not be a grade
change at this time, waiting
for results of the Keystone
Classification Study.
Jim Fowler will replace
Chris Otto on the Pioneer Li-
brary Joint Powers Board.
Mary Jo Wieseler will replace
Betty Werth on the employee
enrichment and development
committee.
Mary Krueger will take
over for Charlie Lemke on
the HRA board. Ryan Lemke
will replace Doug Krueger on
parks commission.
