Blue Jays win High Life Invitational title
By Tom Carothers
Sports Editor
The Plato Blue Jays remained on their midseason
roll by winning the Miller
High Life Invitational on Sunday, June 19. Plato went 4-0
in tournament play, including
a 10-0 shutout of Fort Ripley
in the championship game.
Zack Stockman took to the
mound for his first Blue Jays’
start and tossed a gem against
the Rebels. He pitched all five
innings for an abbreviated
complete game victory, scattering six hits and three walks
while striking out four.
Stockman’s Plato teammates ensured a quick game
by knocking in five runs in
the third inning, three in the
fourth and two more in the
fifth to hang a 10-run rule loss
on their foe.
Ben Slater drove in three
runs and scored once with a
2-for-3 game, while Kyle
Panning, Chris Odegaard and
Joe Nix drove in two runs
apiece. Panning and Nolan
Lepel scored twice each.
To get to the title game,
Plato defeated Savage 6-4 in
Sunday’s
preliminary
matchup.
Chris Odegaard got the start
and struck out seven batters
over seven innings before
Matt Odegaard claimed the
win after tossing two innings
of relief.
Nix notched two RBI, with
Lepel scoring twice in the
contest, won by Plato with
two runs in the top of the
ninth inning.
Prior to the Blue Jays double-win Sunday, the team
went 1-1 on Saturday’s first
day of tournament play.
Plato opened the invitational with a 4-3 besting of Owatonna, as starting pitcher
Adam Prehn earned a seveninning, complete game win.
Lepel accounted for the
major share of Blue Jay offense in the tightly-contested
game, driving in three runs on
a pair of singles. Panning
went 2-for-4 with one RBI
and one run scored.
Plato finished off Saturday
with a 2-1 defeat of host Gaylord in the invitational’s sec-
ond round.
Cody Hallahan held off the
Islanders by allowing one unearned run over a seven-inning complete game performance. He struck out six batters, while giving up five hits
and one walk.
The Blue Jays scored one
run in both the first and third
innings, while Gaylord
pushed across its lone tally in
the fourth.
Matt Odegaard scored both
of Plato’s runs, with Tyler
Lang notching one RBI.
The four-win weekend
pushed the Blue Jays’ overall
record to 13-3 on the season.
Plato will bring a ninegame winning streak into a
Friday night matchup against
the Glencoe Brewers, with
first pitch scheduled for 7
p.m. at Vollmer Field.
The Blue Jays, currently
second in the CRVL West
with a 9-1 league record, are
also scheduled to host Watertown at 4 p.m. Saturday before traveling to face Waconia
at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, June
29.

Brewers walk
past Cologne
By Tom Carothers
Sports Editor
With the help of 15 walks,
the Glencoe Brewers ran
their Crow River Valley
League (CRVL) winning
streak to four games with a
6-3 win at Cologne on
Wednesday, June 15.
Glencoe garnered just
four hits – including a tworun homer from Gannon Jordahl in the first inning – but
eased their way to victory
despite committing six errors in the field.
“Our pitchers did well,
but other than that we did
not play a very good game,”
coach Stephen Wiblemo
said. “Only four hits, six errors and we had at least five
base running mistakes that
either cost us outs or runs in
the game.”
Starting pitcher Justin
Erkenbrack earned the win
for the Brewers after going
6-1/3 innings with two
strikeouts while allowing
four walks, two hits and one
earned run.
Derek Bratsch struck out
a pair while allowing two
hits, two walks and no
earned runs in 2-2/3 innings
of relief before Tanner
Grack struck out the lone
batter he faced to close out
the game and claim the save.
The win improved Glencoe to 10-6 overall and 7-3
in CRVL play. As of June
19, the Brewers were third
in the CRVL West, 2.5
games behind division-leading Green Isle.
Glencoe traveled to play
in the Atwater Days Tournament on Saturday, June 18,
coming away with a pair of
losses.
The Brewers fell 2-1 to
the Minneapolis Angels in
the tourney opener, with
Mason Goettl’s seventh-inning solo home run accounting for all the Glencoe offense.
Starting pitcher Jaime
Paumen struck out three in a
six-inning complete game
effort, but came away the
hard-luck loser despite giving up just two earned runs
on five hits and no walks.
The Brewers provided
more scoring in their second
tourney game, but also gave
away more runs in a 6-5 loss
to St. James.

I
n my impatient and prideful youth I found much in my father to criticize, especially,
when from my immature point of view, he was resistant to what I thought were my perfectly reasonable desires to do what I wanted, how I wanted and when I wanted. In my more angry moments I would think, but
never dare to say, “I will never be like you.” As I matured and have grown to be more reflective and honest about
myself, I regret having thought such an ugly thought. More often than not, I now wish that I could become more
like the loving, dedicated, principled and faithful man I have grown to appreciate. The unshakeable values and faith
that guide my father’s life that I found so irritating in my youth have become a valued witness to the truth about our
lives that I find to be a refuge in my own struggles.
In the Gospel we heard in church on Father’s Day, Jesus asks his disciples to make a profession of faith. When
they correctly answer that he is the Christ, he warns them not to tell this to others. This warning is not given because
it is incorrect, but because their vision of the Christ as a great and conquering hero and king misses the true meaning
of his message. Jesus immediately teaches them that salvation is gained through faithfulness to God in the most difficult of times and in the greatest moments of stress and suffering. The true meaning of being the Christ is to live in
absolute fidelity to the Father, to know in the depths of one’s being that nothing is more powerful that being loved
by God, and that no difficulty, suffering, pain or desolation can overwhelm the power of that love. It is in imitation
of the complete abandonment of Christ to the will of God that we will find light and life. The command to “pick up
your cross daily and follow me,” is not an invitation to seek out suffering, but an invitation to conquer the uncertainties and suffering of human existence with the power of faithfulness and hope in God.
Throughout his life my father has taught me that truth. In 41 years of marriage he saw those he loved suffer terribly, and often he was helpless to calm that suffering, but he never turned away from it and never gave up. There was
not one moment in my life that I thought my father would shrink from those he loved when things got difficult. He
was at my mother’s side through the death of three of their children, through dozens of hospitalizations and surgeries, through moments of unrelenting pain and sadness, yet he did not turn away from the path of love. He was faithful through all these sufferings and trials, and he held my mother in his arms as she died. In the darkness of those
moments he did not lose faith or despair. In the aching isolation and loneliness after my mother’s death he prayed
constantly and in the darkness sought the guidance of the God whom he knew loved him.
On this Father’s Day I prayed that God will bless my father and fill him with light and peace, and that I might
learn to live my life with the same grace, faithfulness and integrity with which he lives his.

Rate Increase Notice
Notice of public hearings for Xcel Energy
Xcel Energy has asked the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (MPUC) for a three-year increase in
electricity rates. For 2016, the requested increase is for $194.6 million or about 6.4 percent. For 2017,
the requested incremental increase is for $52.1 million or about 1.7 percent. For 2018, the requested
incremental increase is for $50.4 million or 1.7 percent. The total increase for the three-year period is
$297.1 million or about 9.8 percent.
Public hearings
Alternatively, Xcel Energy has proposed a settlement plan offer which asks the MPUC to approve a five-year
increase in electricity rates. Under this rate-setting approach, the requested increase for 2016 is for $163.7
million or about 5.4 percent, based on the 2016 cost of service. For 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020, the requested
incremental increase for each year is $54.6 million, or about 1.8 percent per year. Depending upon customer
class and use, the actual percentage of any increase will vary under either the three-year or five-year proposal.
We requested the rate changes described in this notice. The MPUC may either grant or deny the requested
changes, in whole or in part, and may grant a lesser or greater increase than that requested for any class or
classes of service.
The MPUC will likely make its decision about the final rates in 2017. While the MPUC reviews Xcel Energy’s
request, state law allows Xcel Energy to collect higher rates on an interim (temporary) basis. The interim
rate increase for 2016 is $163.7 million or about 5.5 percent over total current rates. Because Xcel Energy
is requesting a multi-year rate plan, we also requested an increase to the interim rate starting January 1,
2017. If approved, the Company will provide additional details before this increase happens. If final rates
are lower than interim rates, we will refund customers the difference with interest. If final rates are higher
than interim rates, we will not charge customers the difference.
If you move before a refund is issued and we cannot find you, your refund may be treated as abandoned
property and sent to the Minnesota Department of Commerce, Unclaimed Property Unit. You can check for
unclaimed property at missingmoney.com. To make sure we can send you any refund owed, please provide a
forwarding address when you stop service.
Public hearings
Administrative Law Judge Jeffery Oxley is holding eight public hearings. You are invited to comment on the
adequacy and quality of Xcel Energy’s service, the level of rates or other related matters. You do not need to
be represented by an attorney.

monthly customer charges.

Area FFA corn drives aid Camp Courage
Glencoe-Silver Lake FFA
and Buffalo Lake-HectorStewart FFA are outstanding
supporters of True Friends
Camp Courage with their annual corn drives. This past
school year the Buffalo LakeHector-Stewart FFA was the
seventh top FFA supporter,
raising $7,107. GSL FFA was
the sixteenth top FFA supporter, raising $4,300. Funds
raised will help provide
scholarship and program support for kids and adults with
disabilities to attend camp.
The corn drive tradition
began in 1953 after a large
storm passed through the
area. Freeborn FFA Advisor
Lee Asche had the idea to
gather the corn that fell to the
ground and sell it to the elevator. They took the money
raised from this effort, $90,
and donated it to Camp
Courage, which allowed one
Freeborn resident with polio
to attend summer camp.
Since then the corn drive has
raised over $5.5 million for
Camp Courage and True
Friends.
Today over 60 chapters
participate in the corn drive
each year to help support
campers while they have a
blast tubing, fishing, horseback riding and zip lining.
Just in time for summer
camp, a brand new ropes
course was built at Camp
Courage. This course is oneof-a-kind because it is completely wheelchair accessible.
Campers will have independent control of deciding when
they would like to ascend and
descend rather than relying
on staff. This is one of many
examples of True Friends carrying out our mission of providing life-changing experiences and adventures that enhance independence and selfesteem for children and
adults with disabilities.

Courage call 952-852-0101
