A 10-8 defeat of Albert Lea
in the Section 2AA winner’s
bracket final on Saturday,
May 30 has the Glencoe-Sil-
ver Lake baseball team within
one win of returning to the
state tournament.
“We are very happy with
what we have done,” coach
Dean Schwirtz said. “But this
team is always focused on the
next game and we still have
work left to do.”
It was a perfect morning for
baseball – or just about any-
thing, for that matter – as the
Panthers and Tigers took the
field at Veterans Park in St.
Peter.
Off the bat, it appeared the
day might belong to Albert
Lea as the south subsection’s
top seed staked itself to a 3-0
lead after two innings before
the top team from the north
got on the board.
Mason Goettl – who had six
RBI over two mid-week sub-
section wins against Norwood
Young America and Belle
Plaine – struck again in the
third, knocking in Teddy Pe-
tersen with GSL’s first run of
the contest, bringing the score
to 3-1 in favor of the Tigers.
That tally was mere pro-
logue for what was to come.
In the fourth, the Panthers
took full advantage of a bout
of wildness on account of two
Albert Lea pitchers to put up
seven runs with two outs to
seize a sudden 8-3 lead.
After Petersen launched a
two-out, two-run single, Ben-
nett Bielke walked and Goettl
singled to load the bases.
The Tigers went to the
bullpen, bringing in Johnathon
Fleek for starter Tyler Steele.
However, Fleek could not find
the strike zone, walking Tan-
ner Grack, Tyler Chap and
Peyton Sell to plate three runs
before starting pitcher Jacob

The season came to a
close for the Glencoe-Silver
Lake golf teams with the
conclusion of the Section
5AA tournament at Pebble
Creek Golf Club in Becker.
Neither the girls’ nor boys’
teams advanced to the sec-
ond round of the 36-hole
competition that was held
over two days, beginning on
Thursday, May 28, and con-
cluding on Monday.
One member of the girls
squad, Ashlyn Ratike, ad-
vanced to individual compe-
tition on Day Two, while the
team finished Thursday with
a total score of 424. The
boys wrapped up their year
on Day One with a team
score of 400.
GSL Girls’ Golf
Ratike put the finishing
touches on her high school
career by carding a 96 on
Monday after leading GSL
with a 101 last Thursday.
“Ashlyn played very good
golf thoughout the section
tournament. She stayed pos-
itive over the two days of
section play,” coach Scott
Eckhoff said. “She had sev-
eral excellent holes with
great shots and recovered
from the holes she made
mistakes. We were very
proud of her performance.

Baseball one win from state return
Chronicle photos by Tom Carothers
Among Glencoe-Silver Lake’s five qualifiers for the state Class A track and field
meet this weekend are (pictured from left) Jac Chelman, Zoe Christensen and
Brandon Richter. Chelman, defended his Section 2A 3200-meter run title last Sat-
urday in Mankato and will run the event this Friday at state. Christensen is making
her first state appearance after winning the section shot put title and competes on
Saturday. Richter was the section runner-up in the 800-meter run and is slated to
run in the state preliminary round on Friday. Chelman and Richter also joined
Michael Schaefer and Garret Ardolf in qualifying for the state 4x800-meter relay
competition, which will be run on Saturday at Hamline University in St. Paul.

Glencoe-Silver Lake will be repre-
sented by four boys and one girl at
the state Class A track and field meet
this weekend after Panthers competi-
tors qualified in four total events at
the Section 2A championship meet in
Mankato on Saturday, May 29.
In the sectional team competition,
the 12-man GSL boys contingent fin-
ished in a three-way tie for eighth
with 41 points, while the 10–member
Panthers girls squad placed 10th with
40 points.
Christensen wins 2A
shot put title
Zoe Christensen will carry the flag
for GSL in the girls meet after the
freshman won the section title in shot
put with a personal-best throw of 38
feet, 9.75 inches.
“It feels good,” she said of her
achievement. “The throw that won it,
I don’t really remember. It just kind
of happened.”
While the moment itself was not
stashed away in the memory bank,
the freshman was thrilled with the re-
sult and is looking forward to com-
peting at the state level for the first
time in her young high school career.
“I was very humble about it, just
punched the air a lil’ bit,” she said.
“I’m really excited about state, but
nervous. I’m looking forward to the
experience.”
Chelman, Richter back
in state meet
Seniors Jac Chelman and Brandon
Richter are returning to the state
meet this season, not only in their re-
spective individual events, but also
bookending the Panthers’ 4x800-
meter relay team.
“It’s tremendously exciting to fi-
nally be able to run the 4x800 at
state,” Chelman said.
Chelman defended his section
3200-meter run title with a winning
time of 9 minutes, 55.83 seconds on
Saturday. He said he “felt good” in
Mankato after finding it difficult to
break the 10-minute mark in the
event this season and hopes that feel-
ing will carry through to the state
meet.
“I’m going in knowing that I’m
ranked fifth,” he said. “I’ll be look-
ing to drop 10 seconds and go for a
top-three finish.”
Chelman placed ninth at last year’s
meet as a junior.
Richter cruised his way to a return
trip to state in the 800-meter run by
placing second in the event at sec-
tions with a time of 2:00.12.
He is looking to run the 800 multi-
ple times this weekend – twice on his

Popelka helped his own cause with a two-run
double to cap off the rally.
“That game came down to a few instances
where we were able to get the third out of an
inning,” Schwirtz said. “Albert Lea was get-
ting big outs as well, but there we were able
to do just enough that inning and I’m thank-
ful.”
The 7-spot was the turning point of the
game, but the contest was far from over.
Albert Lea recorded three runs in the bot-
tom of the fourth and another pair of runs in
the bottom of the sixth.
GSL was able to cling to its tenuous advan-
tage by means of a pair of RBI singles from
Goettl and Grack in the top of the fifth. Those
RBI proved critical in the final result with
Schwirtz’s side holding off the Tigers with a
whip and a chair to record the win.
“That game was a testament to two great
teams,” Schwirtz said.
Popelka earned the victory, with Chap
picking up an unofficial hold after each
tossed three innings apiece before Grack
pitched a 1-2-3 seventh to earn the save and
send the Panthers to the title round.
Goettl recorded three RBI in the game and
now has 12 RBI through four playoff games.
Petersen scored three times Saturday and has
crossed home plate nine times so far in sec-
tional play.
The Section 2AA title round begins at 5
p.m. Thursday in St. Peter. If the Panthers
win that game, they advance to state. A loss
means an immediate one-game playoff for the
section championship and state berth.
GSL found out its sectional final opponent
– either Albert Lea, Norwood Young Ameri-
ca, or Belle Plaine on Tuesday night after the
Chronicle went to press. The Panthers have
defeated all three teams in this year’s tourna-
ment, but Schwirtz preached caution.
“They are all talented teams,” he said.
“With the quality of teams remaining, they
can always come back and get you.”
Alex Romano is scheduled to start Thurs-
day’s 5 p.m. contest, regardless of opponent.
If a second game is necessary, Grack will get
the nod.
“We’re lucky to have two No. 1’s on our
staff in Alex and Tanner,” Schwirtz said. “We
have our aces going, rested and ready.”

Brewers’ skid
hits four games
By Tom Carothers

A 4-3 defeat at Dassel-
Cokato on Saturday, May 30
pushed the Glencoe Brew-
ers’ losing skid to four
games heading into a six-
game homestand. The
Brewers dropped both of
their contests on the latter
end of last week, previously
falling 10-6 at Waconia on
Thursday, May 28.
Lakers 8, Brewers 1
Glencoe suffered an 8-1
setback at Waconia last
Thursday, mustering up just
four hits against a trio of
Lakers pitchers. Brody
Bratsch recorded two of the
hits, with Josh Kraby and
Stephen Wiblemo notching
one hit apiece.
Gannon Jordahl drove in
Colt Trebesch with Glen-
coe’s lone run of the game
in the sixth inning, but Wa-
conia scored in four of their
eight turns at the plate.
Starting pitcher Justin
Erkenbrack went the dis-
tance for the Brewers.
Erkenbrack was charged for
six earned runs out of the
eight allowed, giving up
seven hits and eight walks
while striking out five.
Saints 4, Brewers 3
Glencoe took a 2-0
fourth-inning lead at Dassel-
Cokato, but could not hold
on as the host Saints an-
swered with four runs of
their own over the next
three frames and clung to
the one-run differential for
victory.
The Brewers made things
interesting in the eighth in-
ning, as Bratsch drove home
Trebesch with an RBI dou-
ble for the team’s third run
of the game. Bratsch made it
as far as third base later in
the inning before being
forced out, extinguishing the
would-be tying run. Glencoe
went 1-2-3 in the ninth to
lose by the lone tally.
Brewers starter Derek
Bratsch took the loss after
allowing four earned runs
on seven hits and two walks
in 6-1/3 innings. Jacob Kraft
went 1-2/3 in relief, striking
out two and walking one.
Back at Vollmer
Glencoe, 3-5 on the sea-
son, commences what is
scheduled to be a six-game
homestand with a pair of
contests this week at
Vollmer Field. The Brewers
are slated to host Mayer on
Wednesday and Young
America on Thursday. First
pitch for both games is 7:30
p.m.

Early bragging rights
along Highway 212 belong
to the Brownton Bruins,
who remained undefeated
on the season by means of a
5-2 win at the Plato Blue
Jays on Sunday, May 31.
Brownton took a 2-1 lead
after the first inning with
Ryan Grams and Matt
Schwichtenberg scoring for
the Bruins in the top of the
frame. Matt Odegaard dou-
bled and was driven home
by Chris Odegaard for
Plato’s opening-inning tally.
Odegaard scored again in
the third on an RBI sacrifice
grounder by Tyler Lang, but
the first three innings were a
theater of Blue Jays
baserunning errors that cost
the team a chance to take an
early lead.
Brownton starter Dylan
McCormick got stronger as
the game went along, de-
spite dealing with a sore
back, as Plato did not get a
runner past first base until
Adam Prehn reached third
in the ninth.
Prehn, who started the
game for the Blue Jays and
notched nine strikeouts,
ended up saddled with the
loss despite giving up three
hits, four walks and two
earned runs in 6-1/3 innings.
Brownton pushed across
the go-ahead run in the top
of the fifth as Spencer
Glaeser scampered home on
a wild pitch to make the
count 3-2.
The Bruins tacked on two
more runs in the seventh,
with Glaeser and Grams
each scoring once again to
bring the tally to the eventu-
al final of 5-2.
McCormick came within
one out of a complete game,
but ran into a bit of trouble
in the bottom of the ninth,
putting two runners on be-
fore Grams came on to earn
the save by recording the
final out.

each age bracket.
Tournament play begins on Friday at 5:30

broke the Glencoe-Silver Lake school
record in the 300-meter hurdles with a
third-place time of 47.82 seconds at the
Section 2A meet on Saturday, May 30 in
Mankato. Emily Muetzel (pictured

59.65 to finish third in the 400-meter
run. Isiah Herout (pictured at bottom)
concluded his high school career by
taking fifth in the 3200-meter run and
sixth in the 1600-meter run at sections.
own and once in a relay. After
finishing a de facto 10th in the
800 at last year’s state meet,
his goal is to qualify for the fi-
nals this season. But after that,
his mind is on the 4x800.
“I’m excited to go back and
run the 800,” he said. “But I
really want the relay to do
well.”
The relay quartet of Chel-
man, Michael Schaefer, Garret
Ardolf and Richter took fourth
at the section meet, as their
time of 8:13.51 was over four
seconds back of the top two
finishers that automatically
qualify for the state meet.
However, after Richter’s
personal-best run of 1:58 on
the anchor leg, the foursome
believed that they had put up a
time good enough for state.
Within a half-hour, coach Josh
Metcalf was able to confirm
that notion.
“We were really excited
when coach told us we were
going to state,” Chelman said.
Section 2A Meet
The GSL girls narrowly
missed out on qualifying three
girls for state as Emily Muet-
zel and Maddie Monahan
claimed third-place finishes in
their respective individual
races – one spot away from a
Class A berth.
Monahan notched a school-
record time of 47.82 in the
300-meter hurdles, while
Muetzel ran a personal-best
time of 59.65 in the 400-meter
dash. Despite the accomplish-
ments, neither result made the
state cut. However, both
Muetzel, a junior, and Mona-
han, a sophomore will have
another crack at the rarefied
air of the Class A meet next
spring.
The pair also teamed up
with Taylor Novak and Shelby
Clouse to take third in the
4x200-meter relay in a time of
1:49.37, just over 1.5 seconds
away from finishing in the top
two.
The 4x400-meter relay
quartet of Muetzel, Novak,
Monahan and Elise Graup-
mann placed fifth in 4:16.65.
Individually, Shelby Clouse
took eighth in the 100-meter
dash (13.58); Taryn Reichow
placed 13th in the 100-meter
hurdles (18.10), as did Anna-
maria Falcon in the 1600-
meter run (5:47.51); Deanna
Bondhus was 12th in the long
jump (14-7).
In the boys’ competition,
Isiah Herout concluded his
high school career with a pair
of respectable distance finish-
es. He took fifth in the 3200
with a time of 10:26.33 and
sixth in the 1600-meter run
with a 4:40.83. Fellow senior
Garrett Ober placed eighth in
the 1600 in 4:45.23.
Aaron Giesen took seventh
in the 400 (53. 39) with
Grayson Maresh placing 11th
in the discus (108-07) and
Shane Ehrke taking 14th in
the long jump (17-02).
The 4x400 squad of Giesen,
Kyle Beck, Schaefer and
Richter placed seventh in
3:37.53.
Dylan Melchert finished in
a 10th-place tie in the 100
(11.90), with Patrick Kunkel
(25.30) and Kyle Beck (26.30)
taking 13th and 16th in the
preliminary round of the 200-
meter dash.
State Class A Meet
The Class A meet begins at
3:30 p.m. Friday afternoon.
Chelman is scheduled to make
his final high school 3200 run
at 6:33 p.m. Richter is slated
to make his 800 prelim run at
5:48 p.m.
Christensen will take to the
pit for the girls’ shot put com-
petition at 3:30 p.m. Saturday,
with the boys’ 4x800 to take

She was pleased the way she finished her
high school career.”
Also finishing up their senior seasons at the
section meet were Alexis Kerslake and Claire
Wraspir. Kerslake carded a 106, with Wraspir
finishing with a 109.
“We were always proud of the way they
stayed positive and handled themselves on
the golf course,” Eckhoff said of his seniors.
“Their leadership will be missed.”
Lindsay Wedin and Jenna Lokensgard,
both juniors, ended their spring with respec-
tive scores of 108 and 118. Eckhoff noted the
team will be counting on them as seniors next
season, as well as Rachel Reichow, who will
be a junior in 2016.
“Lindsay, who earned honorable mention
in the conference, Jenna and Rachel all con-
tinued to show improvement this season and
will be our leaders next year,” the coach said.
“We have a very good nucleus of young
golfers returning next season. The future of
GSL girls’ golf looks bright.”
GSL Boys’ Golf

Thursday, carding a 97 and a 100, respective-

spective scores of 101 and 102. Trevor Posus-
ta and Tyler Hausladen rounded out GSL’s

The enduring Word
I
t was an attention-grabbing headline a couple of weeks ago: “Christians lose ground, ‘nones’ soar in new portrait of
US religion.” The article’s first line was even more alarming: “The United States is a significantly less Christian
country than it was seven years ago.”
That Religion News Service article, reporting on a recent Pew Research Center report regarding the state of religion in
America today, was meant to shock us and wake us up. It did just that because the numbers don’t lie. The percentage of
“nones,” or atheists and agnostics, in the United States is growing. Persecution of Christians is on the rise, especially in
the Middle East. Christian morals and values are increasingly denounced in the public square, particularly in the United
States and Europe.
This shouldn’t scare us, and, really it shouldn’t surprise us. The truth is, the Church has always been in the minority, be-
cause the Word of God has always been a stumbling block to those who don’t believe it. Today, we’re seeing what many
Christians all throughout the history of the church observed in their lifetimes as well.
The good news is that the Word of the Lord endures! It endures no matter what is currently popular with the world’s cul-
ture. Our Lord is timeless and unchanging. His love endures, despite polls, statistics, and the spirit of the times.
That’s why it’s important for us Christians to continue focusing on teaching the faith in our homes and in our Church —
regardless of what the popular culture says. It’s important that we set aside time each day to spend in God’s Word and to
pray. It’s important that we commit Bible verses and hymns and prayers to heart. It’s important that we teach. It’s impor-
tant that we study.
Let’s keep on learning and teaching Christ and His Word, despite the world’s distractions. Let’s listen to what He has to
say, so that we aren’t scared or surprised. Instead, let’s live in and by His mercy and forgiveness, day in and day out.
This weekly message is contributed by the following concerned citizens and businesses who
urge you to attend the church of your choice. To be added to this page, contact us at 320-864-5518.
