Four losses by a grand total of six runs.
Such was the fate suffered by the Glencoe
Brewers last week as the squad incurred a nar-
row home loss to one of the top teams in the
Crow River Valley League (CRVL) followed
by a trio of slim setbacks at the Rosen Tourna-
ment over the weekend.
“Played three games, lost all three by close
scores,” coach Stephen Wiblemo said of the
tournament. “Only had 10 guys there, so that
hurt us, especially on offense. But we made the
most of it and played some good teams.”
The quartet of unfortunate outcomes dropped
the Brewers to 8-11 on the season, though
Glencoe entered this week holding onto fourth
place in the CRVL northern division with a 6-6
league mark with a light league schedule to
start the month of July.
Waconia 4, Glencoe 2
Glencoe gave CRVL North leader Waconia a
tough battle when the two teams met at
Vollmer Field on Tuesday, June 23, but the
Brewers came up on the short end of a 4-2 loss.
Starting pitcher Colt Trebesch gave up seven
hits, no walks and just two earned runs (out of
four total) but was tagged with the loss.
Waconia manufactured a run in the third in-
ning and pushed across two more in the fifth to
lead 3-0 before Glencoe, who had been putting
runners in scoring position all game, finally got
on the board with two runs in the bottom of the
seventh.
However, those runs, scored by Cole Pe-
tersen and Derek Weber, proved to be the
Brewers’ lone tallies of the night. Waconia net-
ted an insurance run in the top of the eighth to
put the finishing touches on their victory.
Glencoe left 10 runners on base in suffering
the loss.
Raymond 5, Brewers 4
The Brewers opened tournament play on
Saturday, June 27 by facing Raymond. In what
proved to be the rule of the tourney and week
as a whole, Glencoe fell 5-4 to the Rockets.
Jaime Paumen went all seven innings for the
Brewers, striking out seven batters while giv-
ing up 10 hits and five earned runs.
Glencoe notched three hits in the game, with
Brody Bratsch going 1-for-3 with two RBI to
lead the offense. Derek Bratsch scored twice.
Ortonville 2, Brewers 1
Glencoe mustered up just three hits once
again in its Saturday tourney follow-up, falling
2-1 to Ortonville.
Justin Erkenbrack allowed two earned runs
on 11 hits and three walks in his complete-
game effort, but took the loss as Colt Trebesch
recorded the team’s lone run in the sixth in-
ning.

Matt Odegaard scored three runs and

near the top of the Crow River Valley
League standings with a 17-2 defeat of
Norwood on Sunday, June 28, at Blue
Jay Stadium.
Blue Jays blast Norwood
By Tom Carothers
Sports Editor
A pair of home victories last
weekend kept the Plato Blue
Jays near the very top of the
Crow River Valley League
(CRVL) standings, as the
squad posted a 7-2 record in
the month of June.
The Blue Jays carry a 12-4
overall record into July and
begin the month one-half
game off the lead pace of
Brownton in the CRVL south-
ern division with a 10-3
league mark.
Beaudreau’s 12,
Blue Jays 4
A non-league loss to Class
B Beaudreau’s Saints was just
the second loss of the month
for Plato, who traveled to St.
Cloud to take on the Saints on
Friday, June 26.
Nolan Lepel drove in all
four of the Blue Jays’ runs on
a 3-for-3 day with two singles
and a double. Kyle Panning
was the only other Plato play-
er to amass more than one hit,
striking two singles and scor-
ing twice, in the five-inning
defeat. Joe Nix pitched three
innings and took the loss on
the mound for the visitors.
Blue Jays 6,
Watertown 1
Back in their own ballpark
on Saturday, June 27, the Blue
Jays got back to their winning
ways by means of a 6-1 defeat
of Watertown.
Chris Odegaard hit a three-
run home run to help make a
winner of starting pitcher
Adam Prehn in the five-run
triumph. Prehn went all nine
innings, striking out nine
while scattering 10 hits and
one walk.
Nix, Panning, Matt Ode-
gaard and Lepel all had two
hits apiece, with Odegaard
scoring twice.
Blue Jays 17,
Norwood 2
Plato had no trouble with
Norwood, the last-place team
in the CRVL, when the teams
met on Sunday, June 28.
The Blue Jays got out to a
3-0 first inning lead and al-
most seemed to be angered by
the Indians’ audacity to post a
run in the top of the second by
answering that tally with eight
of their own in the bottom of
the frame en route to a 17-2
win.
Plato took advantage of six
Norwood errors to score their
bevy of runs on just nine hits.

Michael Schaefer (left) and Rachel Franklin were the men’s and
women’s winners in the Glencoe Days 2-mile Fun Run at Oak Leaf
Park on Saturday, June 27. Schaefer, who competed at state for
the Glencoe-Silver Lake boys’ track and field team two weeks earli-
er, led the race from the very start and earned the overall win by a
sizable margin with a time of 12 minutes, nine seconds. Franklin, a
Dassel resident who says she “grew up in the area,” placed high in
the overall standings and first among women with a time of 17:06.

Fun Run finishes with a flourish
By Lori Copler

The Brownton Bruins post-
ed yet another Crow River
Valley League (CRVL) win
Wednesday night, June 24,
by edging Winsted in a 2-0
pitchers’ duel.
The team’s two aces —
Dylan McCormick for
Brownton and Tony Kley for
the Wildcats — battled it out
on the mound as each threw
complete games.
McCormick scattered three
hits, fanned 13 and walked
just one in his best perform-
ance yet this season, while
Kley allowed two runs on
five hits, struck out nine and
walked two for the Wildcats.
The Bruins scored their
first run in the bottom of the
first on two outs. With one
away, Matt Schwichtenberg
hit into a fielder’s choice that
recorded the second out.
Bryant Nordby slammed a
double to plate Nordby be-
fore the Wildcats recorded
the third out of the frame.
Brownton carried a 1-0
lead into the bottom of the
fifth, when a pair of doubles
netted the Bruins their sec-
ond run of the game. With
one out, Spencer Glaeser
smashed the first double. It
appeared he might get left
stranded out second as Kley
fanned the next batter, but
Schwichtenberg then con-
nected for the second double

Clinton 7, Brewers 5
The Brewers’ bats awakened on Sunday,
June 28, but it still was not enough to gain a
win in the team’s tourney finale – a 7-5 loss
to Clinton.
Erkenbrack hit a three-run home run and
Josh Kraby smashed a solo shot, but the
Cards hung crooked numbers on the board
in three of six innings at the plate en route
to the win.
This week
Glencoe plays at Jordan on Tuesday, July
7, with the first pitch from the Mini Met
scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
to bring in Glaeser. Schwicht-
enberg was stranded as the
Wildcats recorded the third
out.
Glaeser had two of the Bru-
ins’ five hits, while Schwicht-
enberg, Nordby and Taylor
Schuette had one each. Kley
had two of his team’s three
hits, while Gregg Kohler had
the third.
Hutch 11, Bruins 6
The Bruins’ Friday night
exhibition game with Willmar
was cancelled when Willmar
was unable to field a team.
On Sunday, the Bruins trav-
eled to Hutchinson for a non-
league game as the Huskies
began a week of events dedi-
cated to the memory of Dave
Mooney, also known as
Hutchinson’s “Mr. Baseball”
for his contributions to the
sport.
The Huskies opened the
week of events with a win
over the Bruins, 11-6.
The Huskies got off to an
early lead with four first-in-
ning runs on three hits and an
error. Brownton scored two
runs in the second, both un-
earned, to cut the Hutchinson
lead to 4-2.
But the Huskies came right
back with a four-run fourth in-
ning to boost its lead to 8-2.
Brownton had its own four-
run rally in the eighth, with
Lucas Doelger and Seth
Schuette driving in runs,
while one scored on a wild
pitch. A three-run homer by
the Huskies’ Jake Wendland
in the eighth finished out
Hutchinson’s scoring for the
afternoon.
The Huskies had 13 hits to
the Bruins’ five. Wendland
paced the Huskies with a 4-
for-5 performance that netted
4 RBI, while Seth Schuette
had two hits for the Bruins.
Seth Schuette also was
tagged for the loss for Brown-
ton. In a five-inning pitching
start, he gave up eight runs,
six earned, on 10 hits as he
struck out one, walked one
and beaned two. Schwichten-
berg threw the final three in-
nings, giving up three earned
runs on three hits as he struck
out two and walked one.
Jayden Juergensen earned
the win for Hutch, giving up
two runs on two hits as he
walked two in a three-inning
start. Mitchell Kurth threw
four innings, giving up no
runs as he allowed two hits,
struck out four and walked
two. Mike Kobow tossed the
final two innings, allowing
four runs on one hit as he
walked five, struck out one
and hit one.
The Bruins hosted Hamburg
Tuesday in a make-up game,
and will host the Gaylord Is-
landers tonight (Wednesday)
at 7:30 p.m. in a non-league
game. They return to CRVL
play Sunday when they host
the Carver Black Sox at 6
p.m.
Brownton is now 10-2 in
the CRVL and continues to
lead the South Division. The
Bruins are 12-3 overall.

The generosity of summer
S
ummer is upon us. The trees have leafed out, the grass is growing too fast to keep up with and the crops
seem to be growing an inch a day. Nature is flourishing all around us. The Farmer’s Market next to my
house is open each week and fresh vegetables are already being harvested and sold. While most of us
are still working every day, the pace of life seems to be a bit lazier and relaxed. Young people and children are
out of school and our community pools are busy and filled with the shouts and laughter of summer vacation.
The weather has been pleasant, and except for a bumper crop of mosquitos and gnats in the early morning and
early evening we can all enjoy being outside. Summer is indeed a generous time when God’s gift of nature
seems to be flourishing everywhere we look.
In this time of joyous abundance it is easy to forget that not all of us are doing well. Amidst thoughts of vaca-
tions, lazy evenings in the out of doors and stolen moments in the sun it is hard to remember that there are those
among us who struggle to keep going. Some of our neighbors struggle to put food on the table, others wrestle
with the devastating effects of illness, and still other families try to resolve seemingly insurmountable problems.
There are those among us who feel alone and abandoned. Perhaps this time of God’s generous gift of summer
abundance could be transformed into a season of generous recognition of the needs of others.
Our local food shelves still are in need of food to share with our hungry neighbors, our sick brothers and sis-
ters and those confined to their homes or long-term care facilities could perhaps use a visit, and those we meet
in the streets are perhaps waiting for someone to greet them and make them feel welcome. As the generosity of
summer blooms around us let us follow nature and bring mercy, kindness and generosity to those in need. May
this time of God’s gifts make us a sign of God’s providence in our communities.
This weekly message is contributed by the following concerned citizens and businesses who
urge you to attend the church of your choice. To be added to this page, contact us at 320-864-5518.
