The Plato American Le-
gion Post 641 baseball team
went 3-2 in the final week of
its regular season and earned
the No. 2 seed for the up-
coming Third District, Divi-
sion II playoffs.
Plato finished the pre-post-
season schedule with a 12-6
overall record, 9-3 in league
play and is slated to open
districts against Zumbrota-
Mazeppa at 1:30 p.m. Satur-
day in Lonsdale.
After taking a doublehead-
er against Mayer by scores of
5-3 and 6-1 on Wednesday,
July 15, Plato bested Nor-
wood 6-3 two nights later to
clinch at least the second dis-
trict seed.
However, a two-game bat-
tle for the top seed against
Woodbury on Saturday, July
18, went the way of the
metro suburbanites with
Plato falling 5-2 and 5-4.
“We’ve played some very
good defense and have had
very good pitching,” coach
Jeff Cummings said. “Our
hitting has been spotty and
our success in the districts
will come from how well we
hit the ball.”
Plato’s pitching in the final
week was highlighted by
Jacob Popelka’s start in the
second game of Wednesday’s
doubleheader as well as
Mitchell Pinske’s complete-
game victory on Saturday.
With the lightning-quick
regular season now in the
books, Plato now prepares
for the bevy of postseason
contests that now beckon as
long as the team keeps win-
ning.
Whether Plato wins or
loses its Saturday opener, it
will play later in the day
against either Watertown or
Sibley East in either Lons-
dale or Montgomery.
A defeat of Zumbrota-
Mazeppa sends Plato to
Montgomery to play the win-
ner of the Watertown/Sibley
East contest. An opening loss
keeps Plato in Lonsdale to
play the Watertown/Sibley
East loser. Either game is
scheduled to commence at
6:30 p.m.

Playoff time for 5102
By Tom Carothers

With four wins over its final
five regular-season matchups,
the Glencoe VFW Post 5102
baseball team is locked and
loaded for the playoffs, which
begin this week.
Four victories against
neighboring opponents were
only mildly tarnished by a 5-4
loss at Maple Plain on Mon-
day, July 6.
“I would have said before
last night we have been play-
ing really good ball, so hope-
fully it was just a little bump
in the road and we will be
ready to go on Thursday,”
coach Dave Sell said regard-
ing Monday’s final-inning set-
back in relation to the opening
of the subdistrict tournament.
Before hitting the “bump in
the road,” Glencoe rolled
through four victories buoyed
by a quartet of complete-game
pitching performances from
Peyton Sell, Taylor Schauer,
Mitchell Boesche and Luke
Frahm.
Sell got the ball rolling in a
9-3 defeat of the Hutchinson
16-year-olds on Tuesday, July
7. Boesche, Alex Troska and
Nick Schmidt each had two
hits, with Carson Streich and
Cameron Chap scoring two
runs apiece.
Schauer helped make it a
Hutch sweep in a dominating
11-1 five-inning win over the
Tigers on Thursday, July 9.
Boesche and Troska again had
two hits each.
Saturday, July 11, was very
good to Glencoe as Boesche
and Frahm each went the dis-
tance in respective 3-0 and
11-6 triumphs against Nor-
wood at Vollmer Field.
In Game One, Boesche was
perfect at the plate, going 3-3,

iting Norwood on Saturday, July 11.

Fans can always expect a
good game when the Plato
Blue Jays and Brownton Bru-
ins meet up on the field, and
they got their money’s worth
Wednesday, July 8, at Barney
Tadsen Field in Brownton.
The Bruins scored two runs
in the first inning, which
were tied up by Plato in the
fifth, before Brownton finally
scored the winning run in the
seventh for a 3-2 victory.
In the bottom of the first,
the Bruins’ Ryan Grams dou-
bled with one out, and was
joined on base by Matt
Schwichtenberg, who
walked. Bryant Nordby sin-
gled to score Grams.
Schwichtenberg reached third
on a base hit by Deryk Randt,
and scored on Mason Goettl’s
base hit.
The Bruins’ lead held until
the top of the fifth, when an
error and a wild pitch put
Nolan Lepel on second base
with no outs. Mitchell Pinske
ran for Lepel and scored on a
double by Ben Slater. Tony
Beringer ’s sacrifice bunt
moved Slater to third. Slater
scooted home on Brian
“Boomer” Graupmann’s sac-
rifice fly to center field.
The two runs knotted the
score at 2-2, which held until
the bottom of the seventh.
The Bruins’ Chad Genz led
off with a single, and Jaden
Katzenmeyer came in to run.
A walk by Spencer Glaeser
moved Katzenmeyer to sec-
ond base, from where he
scored on a single by
Schwichtenberg with two
outs to give the Bruins a 3-2
lead and, eventually, the win.
Grams hurled a complete
game win for Brownton, giv-
ing up two runs on five hits
as he struck out four and
walked one.
Adam Prehn threw 6-2/3
innings for Plato before being
relieved by Cody Hallahan.
Prehn was tagged with the
loss, giving up three runs on
seven hits as he struck out
five and walked two. Halla-
han struck out three of the six
batters he faced in the final 1-
1/3 innings.
Randt had two of Brown-
ton’s eight hits, while
Glaeser, Grams, Schwichten-
berg, Nordby, Goettl and
Genz had one each.
Chris Odegaard had two of
Plato’s five hits, with Lepel,
Slater and Graupmann con-
tributing one each.
Carver 4, Bruins 3
Down 4-0 going into the
bottom of the ninth, the Bru-
ins tried to rally against Carv-
er Sunday afternoon but fell
to the Black Sox 4-3.
The Sox scored their first
run in the bottom of the sec-
ond as back-to-back singles
by Josh Mensch and Anthony
Grass put two runners on
base. A sacrifice bunt by
David Dolan moved the run-
ners up, and Mensch was able
to score on a sacrifice fly by
Ross Tichy.
A run in the third put Carv-
er ahead 2-0. Brett Nelson
singled, advanced on a base
hit by Stuart Mars and scored
on a single by Adam Freder-
icks.
Carver added two insur-
ance runs in the sixth, with
Dolan, who doubled, and
Tichy, who singled, scoring
on singles by Dustin Brock-
off and Nelson.
The Black Sox took their
4-0 lead into the bottom of
the ninth. With one out,
Grams walked and Schwicht-
enberg singled to put runners
on base. Carver recorded the
second out, but then allowed
a single to Nick Heller to
load the bases. Randt tripled
to bring all three runners
home and set himself up in
position to score the tying
run. Goettl got on base with a
walk, but Genz’ fly ball to
left field was caught for the
final out, and the Bruins were
left on the short end of a 4-3
score.
Each pitcher threw com-
plete games. Josh Wendlandt,
hurling for Brownton, gave
up four runs on 12 hits. He
struck out three and walked
none. Andrew Weber, throw-
ing for Carver, gave up three
runs on six hits as he struck
out seven and walked three.
Grams, Schwichtenberg,
Nordby, Heller, Randt and
Genz each had one hit for the
Bruins. Mars, Mensch and
Nelson each had two hits for
Carver, while Weber, Freder-
icks, Grass, Dolan, Tichy and
Brockoff each contributed
one.
The Bruins have a full
week of baseball, starting
tonight at Green Isle. On Fri-
day, they host neighboring
Glencoe for fan appreciation
night at Barney Tadsen Field.
They host Norwood Sunday
at 2 p.m., and have a makeup
game scheduled at Young
America Tuesday evening,
July 21.

Blue Jays split weekly set
By Tom Carothers

The Plato Blue Jays nar-
rowly missed out on a
chance to catch the Brown-
ton Bruins atop the Crow
River Valley League (CRVL)
standings after falling 3-2 at
Brownton on Wednesday,
July 8.
However, the Blue Jays
stayed right on the Bruins’
tail as both teams met with
opposing outcomes in their
respective weekend follow
ups.
Plato did its part to stay
just one game off Brown-
ton’s lead pace in the CRVL
South by topping New Ger-
many 7-2 at Blue Jay Stadi-
um on Saturday, July 18 be-
fore the Bruins 4-3 decision
at Carver the next day.
Bruins 3, Plato 2
Host Brownton set out to a
2-0 first-inning lead in the
taut division battle, before
Plato knotted the count at 2-
all in the top of the fifth in-
ning.
Ben Slater plated Mitchell
Pinske with the Blue Jays’
first run of the game on an
RBI double, before Slater
himself was driven home on
a sacrifice fly by Brian
Graupmann to tie the game
into the seventh inning.
Brownton broke the dead-
lock with what became the
game-winning tally on a sin-
gle, a walk and another sin-
gle to emerge with the one-
run victory and regular-sea-
son sweep.
Starting pitcher Adam
Prehn took the loss after al-
lowing seven hits, two walks
and three earned runs in 6-
2/3 innings on the mound.
He struck out five.
Plato 7, D’men 2
It took a little while, but
the Blue Jays put away a
pesky New Germany side in
their lone weekend contest.
The Dutchmen held a 2-1
lead on the hosts after three
innings of play, with Plato
knotting the game in the
fourth and eventually taking
the lead and game with five
runs over the final three in-
nings.
Chris Odegaard swung the
big bat for the hosts, mash-
ing a pair of home runs, with
Kyle Panning also launching
a solo round tripper in the
five-run victory. Odegaard
and Panning each accounted
for a pair of runs on the day.
Starting pitcher Brian
Graupmann earned the win
with six innings of work, al-
lowing six hits, one walk and
two earned runs with five
strikeouts. Chris and Matt
Odegaard pitched two and
one shutout innings, respec-
tively, to finish out the win.
Plato has a three-game
week on tap, beginning with
a trip to Norwood on
Wednesday night at 7:30
p.m. The Indians currently
reside in the CRVL cellar
with a 1-15 league mark.
Following that game, the
Blue Jays return to Plato for
their final two home games
of the regular season this
weekend.
Young America comes
calling on Saturday, with
Carver visiting on Sunday.
First pitch for both games is
2 p.m.
Plato, 14-5 overall, begins
this week with a 12-4 mark
in the CRVL North — one
game back of Brownton and
Green Isle, both of whom are
13-3 in league play.

Brewers take
two, lose two
By Tom Carothers
Sports Editor
The Glencoe Brewers
snapped a six-game losing
streak with a pair of week-
end wins to keep hopes of a
.500 regular-season finish
within sight.
After dropping a pair of
mid-week games to Jordan
and Winsted, the Brewers
picked up road victories at
Mayer and St. Boni to give
the team a 10-13 overall
record heading into the final
six games of the pre-playoff
schedule.
Glencoe dropped a 5-1 de-
cision at Jordan on Tuesday,
July 7 as the hosts scored all
their runs in the first inning
at the Mini Met. Josh Kraby
drove in Alex Romano with
the Brewers’ lone run of the
game in the third inning.
Glencoe out-hit Jordan 7-6
for the game.
The Brewers suffered the
most lopsided loss of the
six-game skid in a 10-4 loss
to visiting Winsted on
Wednesday, July 8.
The Wildcats, who are
nipping at Waconia’s heels
atop the Crow River Valley
League (CRVL) northern di-
vision, scored in five of the
first six innings, recording
10 runs on 10 hits. Each
team was tagged with three
errors in the contest.
Glencoe recorded a pair of
runs in both the second and
fifth frames, with Jacob
Kraft, Cole Petersen, Derek
Weber and Kraby crossing
the plate for the home team.
The Brewers put that loss
in the rearview mirror two
days later with an 11-4 win
at Mayer on Saturday, July
11.
Starting pitcher Derek
Bratsch went eight innings
for the victory, allowing four
hits, four walks and three
earned runs while striking
out five. Brody Bratsch,
Gannon Jordahl and Derek
Bratsch each notched two
RBI in the contest.
Glencoe capped off the
weekend in fine style with a
6-2 win at St. Boni on Sun-
day, July 12. The Brewers
broke open a close game
with a three-run seventh in-
ning en route to the win.
Brody Bratsch went 3-for-
4 with three RBI, while Colt
Trebesch scored twice.
Starting pitcher John Thell
earned the win with six in-
nings of work, giving up
seven hits with no walks on
five strikeouts.
With the 2-2 set of games,
Glencoe brought an 8-7
record in CRVL play into
this week. The Brewers are
holding onto fourth place in
the CRVL’s northern divi-
sion, 3.5 games off the lead.
Glencoe begins its final
six-game stretch at Cologne
on Wednesday night before
traveling to CRVL South
leader Brownton on Friday
night. First pitch for both
games is 7:30 p.m.
The Brewers travel to
New Germany for a 2 p.m.
game on Sunday before
hosting their final regular-
season game at 7:30 p.m.
next Tuesday versus Gay-
lord.
while also recording the
shutout on the mound.
Spencer Lepel, Chap and
Boesche accounted for
Glencoe’s three runs.
Game Two was more of a
slugfest, with Glencoe
bouncing back from a 3-0
first-inning deficit to win by
five runs. Chap gave the
home side the lead for good
with a three-run single in a
five-run second inning.
Hunter Glaeser and Troska
each went 2-for-2, with
Lepel scoring two runs.
The 4-1 stretch gave
Glencoe a 12-3 record head-
ing into playoffs. Dave Sell
said that team will be really
looking to get the bats going
as subdistrict play begins at
1 p.m. Thursday against
New Ulm in Hutchinson.
“Our pitching has really
been our best part of our
game,” he said. “Defense
has stepped up but still need
to improve our hitting. We
have shown that we can hit,
now we just have to do it on
a regular basis.”

Public Works Director Schreifels
presented three quotes for the re-
moval of the basement foundation,
sidewalk area, garage floor and water
and sewer disconnect at 1814 Tech-
nology Lane.Ken’s Excavation pro-
vided the low quote of $2290.00.
Councilor Perschau motioned to ac-
cept low quote of Ken’s Excavation.
Councilor Dietz seconded. All mem-
bers present voted in favor.
Public Works Director Schreifels
addressed the council concerning the
quotes for water service at the camp-
ground in Oak Leaf Park. After re-
viewing the approved quote of Fer-
guson Waterworks in was determined
that the quote was incomplete. It was
rebid and Henry’s Waterworks was
the low quote in the amount of
$4,954.71. It was recommended to
the council to reject the Ferguson
Waterworks quote and award the
quote to Henry’s Waterworks.
Discussion led to a motion to re-
ject the Ferguson quote previously
awarded and accept the low quote in
the amount of $4,954.71 of Henry’s
Waterworks by councilor Robeck and
second by councilor Ziemer. All

along Highway 212 that were re-
moved during construction of the

The Light and Power Commission
would have to reimburse the State for
this amount. Instead MNDOT will
allow the City to put new plantings in
the 212 corridor.
Kahnke Brothers is the only quote
obtained as the MNDOT specifica-
tions are very stringent and most
landscapers will not bid. $4,412.25
was quoted for the cemetery retain-
ing wall. $5,780.00 quoted for the
area between the retaining wall and
Go For It Gas. These two areas will
be planted this spring. The balance of
the plantings will be done in the fall
and the quote will be brought before
the council for consideration at that
time. The Light and Power Commis-
sion will reimburse the City for the
cost of the project.

prove the quote of Kahnke Brothers

schedule of the 2015 Building Code

520 Lafayette Road North
Saint Paul, MN 55155
In the matter of a petition for a

pality, each affected soil and water
conservation district and the DNR.
Now therefore, the Board hereby
issues the following:
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN
