By Lee Ostrom Sports Editor erek Dittmer’s two-out, two-run double off Mac Zachow ignited a four-run second inning, and Tony Wischnack limited Green Isle’s offense to four one-base hits, as Plato continued its recent run of success against one of its chief CRVL South Division rivals by capturing a 7-5 victory over the Irish last Sunday (July 14) at Blue Jay Stadium. After beating Winsted ace Tony Kley on July 9 and Green Isle top pitcher Zachow five days later, the Jays woke up Sunday morning a losscolumn game off the lead in the South. However, a 7-4 loss at home to Hamburg later that day sends Plato into the last weekend of the regular season in third place; its 13-6 mark two losses behind Brownton and Green Isle, and a half-game in front of fourth-place Young America, which is 12-6. The Jays close with home games against Mayer on Saturday and Cologne on Sunday — each game has a 2 p.m. start.

One round of region-qualifying playoffs follows. If Plato holds the third seed, it would have an extra home game in a best-of-three series with the sixth seed, which currently is Hamburg. Plato now has won its last four meetings with Green Isle. In three of those games, Wischnack, who turned 40 last month, notched a completegame victory. For six innings Saturday, Green Isle managed a mere two base runners against the right-hander — Jeremy Ische, who singled with two outs in the third and was stranded, and Brian Scherschlight, who reached on a Plato fielding error with two outs in the fourth and, like Ische, never advanced to second. Leading 6-0, the Jays looked like sure winners. Suddenly, though, momentum shifted. It started with right fielder Tyler Lang dropping Zachow’s high fly. It continued with Wischnack issuing a pair of walks — the only two he

Derek Dittmer knocked home Plato’s first two runs with a twoout double in the second.
By Lee Ostrom Sports Editor Josh Kraby knocked home three runs with the second of his two long doubles, and batterymate Stephen Wiblemo pitched a masterful 2-hit shutout, as the Glencoe Brewers downed St. Bonifacius, 10-0, last Tuesday evening at Vollmer Field. The CRVL North Division clash ended abruptly when, with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, Brad Hundt smacked a bases-loaded hit to right-center, bringing the 10-run mercy rule into effect. Wiblemo, who walked none and struck out eight, threw only 83 pitches, 55 of them strikes. The

righthander retired the last 13 Saints to bat. He pitched to 22 batters, which is one over the minimum for a seveninning game. Kraby helped out by throwing out attempted base stealers in the first and third innings. The Glencoe catcher pegged out Michael Dumas, who tried to steal second after opening the game with a bloop single to shallow left. History repeated itself in the third, when Tony Carlson singled to right and was gunned down by Kraby a few pitches later. St. Boni’s only other base runner was veteran Mike Mickelson, who was hit by a Wiblemo serving with
By Lee Ostrom Sports Editor Between 30 and 40 GSL basketball players have been routinely gathering Tuesday and Wednesday mornings this summer, to work on their games. Top emphasis has been on scoring basics, specifically passing and shooting, says head coach Robb DeCorsey. A coach for all seasons since arriving at GSL prior to the 1993-94 school year, DeCorsey took charge of the boys’ basketball program Oct. 10, 2011, making this his first summer off-season with the boys.

one out in the second. As things turned out, Mickelson was the Saints’ one and only stranded runner for the evening. The Brewers did not score off St. Boni starter Austin Ellis until Kraby boomed a double to center with one out in the third. Courtesy runner Derek Weber did the rest, running the bases aggressively to force a Saints throwing error and fashion a 1-0 Brewers lead. Glencoe tacked on four runs in the fourth. The big inning was capped by Kraby’s two-out, bases-loaded double to deep left-center.

Bruins edge Hollanders 5-4 in 15-inning marathon game
The Brownton Bruins capped a four-game week with a 15-inning, 5-4 win over Cologne in tropical weather Sunday afternoon. Hollander errors contributed to nearly all of Brownton’s runs, including the game winner in the bottom of the 15th — when the Bruins‘ seventh, eighth and ninth hitters came to the plate. Blake Lindeman started the action with a base hit. Deryk Randt followed with another single, putting two men on base with no outs. Spencer Glaeser then tapped a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners, and a throwing error on the play allowed Lindeman to score the winning run. The Bruins had taken an early 3-1 lead with a run in each of the second, third and fourth innings, while Cologne scored a run in the top of the fourth. In the second inning, the Bruins’ Taylor Schuette reached base on an error, advanced on Bryant Nordby’s sacrifice and scored on a base hit by Randt. In the third, Ryan Grams reached base on an error, stole second and scored on Schuette’s RBI single. In the top of the fourth, Cologne scored on singles by Chris Daney and Eric Braund and a Bruins’ error. In the bottom of the frame, Chad Genz was hit by a pitch for a free trip to first, reached second on a wild pitch and scored on Brad Daak’s single. Brownton went ahead 4-1 in the sixth as Glaeser singled, advanced on Daak’s base hit and scored on a Hollander error. The Bruins’ lead held until the top of the ninth, when Cologne rallied for three runs; knotting the score at 4-4 on a two-run double by Bret Pexa and a Bruin error. The teams battled through scoreless innings until the bottom of the 15th, when the Bruins finally managed to pull out the win. Cologne had 12 hits to the Bruins’ 11. Daak, Matt Schwichtenberg, Schuette, Randt and Glaeser had two hits each for Brownton, while Lindeman had one. Nick Heller hurled 81⁄3 innings for the Bruins, allowing two earned runs of four scored on 10 hits. He struck out nine and walked none. Grams threw 62⁄3 innings and was awarded the win. He gave up two hits, struck out two and walked none. Alex Buckentine threw 10 innings for Cologne, allowing four runs, one earned, on seven hits. He struck out six and walked five. T.J. Koehler was tagged with the loss. He threw the final four innings, allowing one run on four hits, while walking one and striking out one. Brandon Buesgens had three hits for the Hollanders while Justin Loehrs and Pexa, had two each. The Bruins posted three CRVL wins in their four-game week, and one non-league loss. The week opened Tuesday, July 17, with a 9-2 win over Young America. Brownton led 3-0 after three innings, with all three runs batted in by Heller, who singled in both the first and third — driving in one run in the first and two in the third. The Bruins then rallied for six runs in the fifth on six hits to take a 9-0 lead. Nordby drove in two runs on a double

The Cardinals’ Brandon Stender drove in two runs with a single in the seventh for both of Young America’s runs. Grams threw a complete game for the Bruins, allowing one earned run of two scored on eight hits. He struck out eight and walked four. The Bruins had 10 hits, paced by Heller with his three hits and four RBI. Daak had two hits.

Bruins 9, YA 2
The Bruins’ only loss of the week was 13-2 to the Bird Island Bullfrogs in a non-league game Wednesday evening in which several younger Bruins got significant playing time, while many veterans got a night off. A double by Chad Draeger and a single by Joe Ahlers in the second scored the Bruins’ first run, while Bryce Lindeman drove in the second with a single in the fifth. Draeger had three of the Bruins’ nine hits while Randt contributed two. Michael Hahn, Nordby, Jeff Wendlandt and Schwichtenberg all had some mound action against the Bullfrogs.

The Hawks knotted the score at 3-3 with three runs in the third on a double by Scott Argenbright and singles by Eric Crane and Taz Seibert. Hamburg went ahead 4-3 in the top of the eighth as Tim Willems led off with a double and scored on a fielder’s choice. But Brownton came back in the bottom of the eighth as Randt drove in two runs with a single. Josh Wendlandt tossed a complete game for the Bruins, giving up one earned run of four scored on seven hits. He struck out five and walked two. Brownton had 11 hits to Hamburg’s seven, paced by Daak, Genz, Randt and Glaeser with two each.

at Watertown on Sunday (2 p.m.) Then it’s playoffs. *** — John Thell was Glencoe’s tough-luck losing pitcher at Carver. In tossing a complete game, the righthander allowed nine hits and walked one. Kraby and Scott Wawrzyniak each had a two-hit game. Glencoe only had three hits at Winsted, where Kraby picked up two more.
Dittmer, the Jays’ 26-year-old catcher, said. After the game, Wischnack still was shaking his head about the Green Isle seventh. “You can’t open the door like that,” he said. To the Jays’ credit, they did regain their composure and finish strong. At bat, Lang led off the Plato eighth by lining a double into the left field corner; then scored an insurance run on Wischnack’s sharp one-out single through a drawn-in Irish infield — Plato’s 11th hit off Zachow. Meanwhile, Wischnack hurled 1-2-3 innings in the eighth and ninth innings — looking as good as he did in the fifth and sixth innings. Wischnack said he had command of all three of his pitches Saturday, and relied most heavily on a forkball. “I just love to compete,” he said. “He makes my job easy,” Dittmer said. *** Eric Engelmann opened the second by dropping a single to right, but remained at first two outs later. However, Wischnack rifled a single to rightcenter and Dittmer, on Zachow’s first serving to him, laced his double up the gap in
left-center. Dittmer said he was looking for a first-pitch fastball and got one. “I’m not the most patient hitter,” he said. Nick Johnson used good hustle to reach on an error, stole a base and came home behind Dittmer’s courtesy runner on Hunter Dunbar’s single to right field. Plato added an unearned run on Adam Prehn’s RBI single in the third and an earned run on Prehn’s RBI hit in the fifth. *** The Blue Jays’ week started with a 6-2 win Monday evening at Winsted, as Wischnack twirled a five-hitter to outduel Kley. Kley, who entered the game with a 0.00 ERA (for 41 CRVL innings pitched), was tagged for five hits in the third inning alone. Indeed, after Dunbar’s double and singles by Johnson, Matt Odegaard, Lang and Prehn, the boys from Plato enjoyed a 3-1 lead. Ahead 3-2, the Jays tallied twice in the sixth on a walk to Joe Nix, a single by Engelmann, a sacrifice bunt by Wischnack, Dunbar’s sacrifice fly and a Winsted error. Overall, Plato rapped Kley for 11 hits, including two apiece by Engelmann, Ode-
gaard and Prehn. Odegaard also scored twice and finished with two RBIs. Wischnack, whose complete game included three walks and eight strikeouts, allowed only one earned run. Through games July 15, Wischnack is 3-1 with a 1.62 ERA in 39 innings pitched. His lone loss was 1-0 to Waconia. *** Plato got more quality pitching and timely hitting Tuesday at Arlington, as Cody Christensen hurled seven shutout innings in a 7-3 Jays win. Dunbar led a 12-hit attack with two doubles and a single. Wischnack, who scored two runs and knocked in two others, was one of four Jays with two hits — the others being Prehn, Nolan Lepel and Whitey Sanken. Christensen and A’s ace Joe Lucas dueled in a scoreless tie for four innings, before Plato struck for one run in the fifth, two in the sixth and two more in the seventh. Arlington scored three times off Jays reliever Nix in the eighth, before Lang came on to get the final four outs. Lang, who did not allow a hit, walked one and struck out three.

Measurable hail
Chronicle photo by Brenda Fogarty
Hail the size of ping pong balls was recorded at Silver Lake last Friday. A penny is in the middle of the big hail stones to give a comparision. The storm also caused a fire when lightning struck a Silver Lake house. While Silver Lake took the brunt of the storm, most of the remainder of McLeod County missed the storm altogether. The area continues to swelter under the heat and humidity. Temperatures have topped 85 degrees for the past 19 days with little relief in sight.
