Post 5102 bows out
in subdistrict playoffs
By Tom Carothers
Sports Editor
The Glencoe VFW Post
5102 baseball team saw its
season come to a close following back-to-back losses to
New Ulm Gold and DasselCokato in the Second District
Northwest Subdistrict Tournament held in Sleepy Eye last
weekend.
Glencoe opened tournament
play by being shut out 12-0 by
New Ulm on Friday, July 22,
with the opponent posting
seven runs in the second inning and five more in the
fifth.
Post 5102 managed just two
hits in the game, with Carsen
Streich and Gabe Roepke
notching one each.
Roepke again logged one of
his team’s two hits in Glencoe’s final tourney game – a
6-1 loss to Dassel-Cokato –
the next day.
Spencer Lepel recorded
Post 5102’s other hit, an RBI
double that scored Taylor
Schauer with the only run
Glencoe scored in its time at
Sleepy Eye. Schauer and
Roepke also stole one base
each in the contest.

game, was safe on the play. Pictured below, Ben

Plato win streak hits two months
By Tom Carothers
Sports Editor
At one point early this season, the defending state Class
C champion Plato Blue Jays
had a rather slight 4-3 overall
record.
That was on May 25, after
Plato dropped a 4-2 decision
to Green Isle at Blue Jay Stadium.
Fast forward two months,
and Plato put the finishing
touches on its 18th-consecutive victory – an 11-0 defeat
of visiting Glencoe on Sun-
day, July 24 – giving the Blue
Jays a mighty 22-3 overall
mark as the squad now gets
to kick back and relax during
this week’s first round of the
Region 7C Tournament.
The Blue Jays, who already
had locked up the region’s
top seed before clinching a
17-1 record in Crow River
Valley League (CRVL)
matchups with their defeat of
the Brewers, also won 6-1 at
Gaylord on Friday, July 22.
Plato seized a 1-0 lead in
the bottom of the first against
Glencoe as Chris Odegaard
drove home Nolan Lepel on
an RBI triple in the bottom of
the first inning.
The score remained that
way until the fourth, when
Tony Beringer cracked a
three-run home run over the
left-center field wall – scoring Tyler Lang and Ben
Slater – to make the score 40.
Plato added three more
runs in the fifth, with Lang
driving home Jake VonBerge
on an RBI single before both
Lang and Odegaard crossed
the plate on a two-run double
by Slater.
The game was already allbut clinched by the time the
Brewers batted around in
their final turn at the plate in
the sixth.
Kyle Panning walked to
lead off the stanza and was
promptly driven home on a
ringing double to center by
Matt Odegaard, who was
later plated on an RBI single
by Nolan Lepel.
VonBerge, courtesy running for Lepel came home
along with Lang after the latter crushed a two run homer
over the left field wall that
brought the count to its eventual 11-0 tally.
Adam Prehn finished off
the abbreviated contest with a
one-hit, one-strikeout seventh
inning in relief of starter
Chris Odegaard.
Odegaard dominated his
six-inning start, allowing one
hit and no walks while striking out 10 for his seventh win
of the season.

Season ends for Post 641

was eliminated from postseason play after a 4-1 loss
to Belle Plaine in a fourth-round game at the Third

Mitch Kettner (pictured above) and his Plato teammates went 2-2 overall in tourney play.
Bruins lose twice to close out regular season
By Tom Carothers
Sports Editor
A pair of losses – one inleague, one out – brought the
regular season to an end for
the Brownton Bruins last
week, though the squad
didn’t go down without a
fight in its Crow River Valley
League (CRVL) finale at
Green Isle on Sunday, July
24.
Four days after losing 10-0
to visiting Chaska, Brownton
trailed the host Irish 9-0
heading into the eighth inning
of their concluding CRVL
clash before this week’s Region 7C playoffs begin.
In no mood to be blanked
yet again, the Bruins put together a hellacious rally over
their final two turns at the
plate before falling just short
in a 9-8 decision.
Brownton loaded the bases
in the top of the eighth following a pair of walks, a single and a fielder’s choice before Ryan Grams strode to
the plate and smashed a
grand slam home run to cut
the Bruins’ deficit to 9-4.
Spencer Glaeser, who
along with Reggie Valek and
Nick Heller, scored on the
grand slam, knocked in Seth
Schuette with a ninth-inning
double to make the score 9-5.
After a walk to Deryk
Randt loaded the bases, Josh
Dietz was hit by a pitch to
force home Jason Rosenau
and make the count 9-6.
Grams came to the plate
once again with the bases
loaded and two outs and
drove in what became
Brownton’s final two runs on
a double before a strikeout
ended the game.
The Bruins finished the
year with a 9-9 record in the
CRVL.

July has not been a kind
month for the Glencoe Brewers.
Having entered the month
with a 12-9 overall record that
included its forfeit victory
against Norwood, Glencoe
lost five of six games in July
to close out the regular season
with a 13-14 overall record
and a 9-9 mark in the final
Crow River Valley League
(CRVL) standings.
The Brewers dropped both
of their matchups last week –
8-1 at Gaylord in a nonleague matchup and 11-0 at
Plato in the CRVL finale – to
run their losing streak to four
games as the postseason begins this week.

Gifts of the Holy Spirit
C
onfirmation occurs when a young person confirms the promises made on his or her behalf during
baptism. Confirmation marks the final sacrament of Christian initiation and further links a person to
the Church and his or her faith. A key aspect of confirmation is the presence of the Holy Spirit.
Although the Holy Spirit acts in each of the sacraments, it is perhaps during confirmation when the greatest connection is
made. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, “the effect of the sacrament of confirmation is the special outpouring
of the Holy Spirit as once granted to the apostles on the day of Pentecost.” The Holy Spirit serves as a guide and helper to all.
What gifts does the Holy Spirit bring? Various theologians describe them as such.
1. Wisdom: This is a person’s ability to value spiritual things over worldly possessions. It helps one desire items that bring
people closer to God.
2. Understanding: A gift of comprehension, understanding is the ability to absorb the meanings and teachings of the Church.
This gift also helps people to be more tolerant of and sympathetic toward others. Having understanding means being able to
recognize when others need compassion or assistance.
3. Right judgement/Council: A person who has received this gift knows the difference between right and wrong. This is essential for avoiding sin and leading a life that mirrors that of Christ. The gift of council also inspires people to encourage others
to do what is right.
4. Courage: Being faithful requires courage, especially when a person’s beliefs may not be accepted, and may even be
feared, by others. Courage allows one to stand up and defend his or her faith and be firm in decisions as they pertain to religion.
5. Knowledge: The gift of knowledge guides a person on the path that will lead to God. Knowledge assists as the faithful look
to avoid any obstacles that would derail their efforts.
6. Reverence: Also known as piety, this gift is confidence and obedience in God. It also makes a person want to serve God
and others. Reverence fosters a greater respect for the Church and its teachings.
7. Wonder and awe: This gift makes the magnificence of God that much more apparent. A portion of this gift is fear; not a
fear in God, but a fear of offending him through sin.
Confirmation is marked by the sealing of one’s faith through the power of the Holy Spirit, further strengthening the seven
gifts bestowed upon believers at baptism.
