Blue Jays remain red hot

A 10-0, seven-inning shellacking
of host Waconia on Wednesday, June
29, gave the Plato Blue Jays a perfect
month of June, with the defending
state champions riding a 12-game
winning streak as the calendar turns
to July.
Plato, in a virtual tie with Green
Isle – the last team to defeat the Blue
Jays, with that decision coming all
the way back on May 22 – atop the
Crow River Valley League (CRVL)
West, had little trouble with the
northern division-leading Wildcats in
moving to 16-3 overall this season,
breaking open the contest with a sixrun fourth inning.
Matt Odegaard led Plato’s 16-hit
attack by hitting for the cycle on a 5for-5 day at the plate. He knocked in
three runs and scored three himself
with two singles, a double, a triple,
as well as his fifth home run of the
season.
Not to be outdone, starting pitcher
Chris Odegaard kept Winsted largely
off the bases by allowing just one hit
and no walks while striking out eight
in a complete-game gem. He also
went 2-for-4 with two runs scored
and one RBI.
Tyler Lang and Nolan Lepel each
had two hits in the contest. Lang netted two RBI and one run scored with
a triple and a single. Lepel drove in a
run and scored twice following a pair
of singles.
Three of the Blue Jays’ previous
four games have come by 10 runs or
more. Plato also topped Fort Ripley
10-0 to win the High Life Tournament on June 19 and Glencoe by a
17-1 on June 24. Only Watertown
has been able to somewhat temper
the red-hot Jays’ bats by holding
Plato to a handful of runs in a 5-3
contest on June 25.
The Waconia win was the Blue
Jays’ lone game of last week as the
team – along with a majority of the
CRVL – took it easy schedulingwise as part of the July 4 holiday
weekend.
However, Plato is back in action
this coming weekend with the middle
two games of a four-game road
swing – including a crucial matchup
at Green Isle on Sunday night, with
first pitch slated for 6 p.m.
The Irish have yet to lose in CRVL
play this season, sporting a 11-0
league record to the Blue Jays’ 12-1
mark. Green Isle has won 15 of its
last 16 games, with the lone setback
a 3-2 loss to Hutchinson on June 26.
Not to be overlooked, Plato is
scheduled to play at Carver at 2 p.m.
Saturday afternoon in the lone regular-season meeting between the
clubs.
Brewers snap skid
By Tom Carothers
Sports Editor
The Glencoe Brewers tasted victory for the first time in
more than two weeks on
Thursday, June 30, snapping a
five-game losing streak and
closing out last month with an
8-7 defeat of visiting Mayer
at Vollmer Field.
Glencoe was facing its
sixth-straight setback, trailing
the Blazers 7-6 heading into
their final turn at the plate in
the bottom of the ninth inning.
However, one-out singles
by Mason Goettl and Stephen
Wiblemo drove home Teddy
Petersen and Brody Bratsch,
respectively, with the tying
and winning runs to hand the
hosts a hard-earned victory.
Glencoe held a 4-0 lead
heading into the fifth inning
before Mayer surged ahead
by hanging a five-spot on the
scoreboard.
While Glencoe responded
with two runs of its own in
the bottom of the frame, the

in its lone game last week,
shutting out Mound 10-0 on
Wednesday, June 29.
Starting pitcher Taylor

Glencoe took a 1-0 lead in
the first, and then broke the
game open with five runs in
the third inning and four more
in the fourth to cruise to the
victory.
Gabe Roepke drove in four
runs with a single and a double as part of a 2-for-2 day at
the plate. Carsen Streich went
3-for-4 and scored two runs.
Schauer helped his own

Bruins fall to Wildcats
By Tom Carothers
Sports Editor
The Brownton Bruins
missed out on a chance to hit
the .500 mark with a 4-2 loss
to visiting Winsted on Thursday, June 30.
Brownton entered the game
at 8-9 overall, but could not
break even on the season as
the Wildcats never trailed
after scoring a lone run in the
top of the first inning.
Winsted held a 3-0 edge
into the bottom of the third inning before the Bruins got on
the board via a solo home run
by Josh Dietz.
Dietz swung the big stick
for Brownton in the contest,
going 4-for-5 on the day, but
the Bruins would not draw
closer than the two-run
deficit.

Bruins starting pitcher Josh

Special CRVL meeting
to be held on Monday
By Tom Carothers
Sports Editor
A special meeting of the
Crow River Valley League
(CRVL) has been called for
Monday, July 11 at Dubb’s
Grill and Bar in Glencoe.
The purpose of the meeting,
as per a CRVL release, is:
“Topic of discussion to be
presented by Glencoe/Watertown/Mayer for the purpose
of discussing the recruiting
practices of the Green Isle
Irish ball team.”
Green Isle currently coleads the CRVL’s western division with the league’s lone
undefeated in-circuit record of
11-0.
Discussion points for the
special meeting of CRVL directors and teams are to include, per the release, a
protest that “Green Isle’s 23man roster consists of 16 current or former college baseball players, many of whom
have been recruited from
communities far from Green
Isle such as Minnetonka, Victoria and Excelsior. Eight of
those players have addresses
from 25 miles out or further,
and 10 are from 20 miles out
or further. Just six players on
their roster come from their
home school district, Sibley
East, and 11 are within a 15mile radius.”
The league release notes
among the meeting’s discussion points that “there seems
to be a consensus that the current system (of what constitutes a Class C team) is
flawed” and “while some leeway is necessary to help
teams from small communities find players, it has also
left the door wide open for
teams to abuse and manipulate the rules to build elite
squads of top tier, collegelevel players that have little or
no connection to the communities they are playing in.”
