The Plato Blue Jays got back to work in the
South Division of the Crow River Valley
League with a 4-0 win over the Hamburg
Hawks Monday.
The South Division tilt was a “battle for the
ages” said Plato Manager Adam Dammann,
as CRVL veterans Tony Wischnack of the
Blue Jays and Mike Mueller of the Hawks du-
eled for the win.
It was only Wischnack’s third start of the
season, who said he expected the hurler show-
down with Mueller, but said he’s just starting
to find his groove.
“Every start is getting better,” he said,
adding with a laugh, “After that first week I
could hardly move.”
The right-hander cruised through nine in-
nings, and never gave up his first hit until the
fifth. Hamburg finished the contest with only
three hits, while Wischnack struck out nine,
and walked and beaned one batter.
With only six games remaining in the regu-
lar season, the Blue Jays are in second place in
the South at 12-3, a game-and-a-half back
from the 14-2 Green Isle Irish. So Monday’s
win was crucial as the post season looms.
“I think every win is a big win now,” Wis-
chnack said, “so we can keep ourselves right
up at the top and get a good seeding.”
The time off was welcome Dammann said,
as it allowed some of his pitchers to get some
rest, but with seven games over a two-week
span, the manager said it’s time to get ready
for the playoffs.
“This is a huge win for us, but we’ve got to
go forward,” Dammann said of Monday
night’s win. Adding about the upcoming
schedule, “It’s a huge week … but this will
also allow us, with this many games in a row,
to find our groove again and get ready for
playoffs.”

After the holiday weekend, the Glen-
coe Brewers improved to 9-7 and
moved within a half game of third after
scoring wins over the Cologne Hollan-
ders and New Germany Dutchmen.
Glencoe had a come-from-behind 5-3
victory against Cologne Sunday, after a
12-0 dismantling of New Germany on
July 2.
The Brewers have benefitted from the
return of Jaime Paumen in the pitching
rotation to give Glencoe another starter
opposite of workhorse Derek Bratsch.
Paumen has a team-leading 1.18
ERA, and has a 2-2 record while lead-
ing the team in strikeouts with 40 over
29.67 innings pitched.
Against the Dutchmen, Paumen only
allowed four men on base, a pair of hits
and as many walks, while striking out
12. With only five games left on the
schedule in the regular season, he and
Bratsch will be counted on heavily.
Co-manager Stephen Wiblemo will
be missing from action over the next
couple weeks on vacation, leaving the
team in the hands of Matt Godel and
Marc Wawrzyniak.
The Brewers started off the second-
to-last week of games with a rematch
against Waconia Tuesday night in Glen-
coe. Plato visits Friday to make up the
Glencoe Days rivalry game that was
washed out, and the Brewers cap off the
weekend by hosting the Brownton Bru-
ins at 2 p.m. Sunday.

With two outs and no one on in the
first, Colt Trebesch connected with Kyle
Knox’s fourth pitch for a single before
eventually stealing home to put Glencoe
up 1-0.

July 2. Action is from the third inning, where Macemon reached
on an error and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Brody
Bratsch, resulting in the play at the plate with Dutchmen catcher
Sam Schiffmann. The Brewers put a hurt on New Germany, win-
ning 12-0 in seven innings before coming away with a 5-3 win
over Cologne on Sunday. Glencoe currently sits in fourth place
of the North Division in the Crow River Valley league.

Hamburg pitcher Taz Siebert beaned
Brownton batter Bryant Nordby to start
a series of miscues in the bottom of the
sixth inning Sunday, allowing the Bruins
to score five runs and break a 1-1 tie.
Brownton went on to win 6-2 over the
Hawks.
The Bruins scored the first run in the
bottom of the first, with lead-off batter
Spencer Glaeser singling to get on base.
He then stole second, reached third on a
passed ball, and scored by stealing home
when Ryan Grams, who walked, was
chased down by Hamburg shortstop Tim
Willems while trying to steal second.
The 1-0 lead held until the top of the
sixth, when the Hawks’ Clint Aretz hit a
two-out single that plated Eric Crane.
Crane had singled to get on base, and ad-
vanced on a single by Justin Perlich.
In the bottom of the sixth, Nordby got
on base right away after getting beaned.
Two errors and a fielder’s choice got
more Bruin runners on the bags, al-
though Nordby was thrown out at third.
However, a single by Chad Genz, a sac-
rifice by Jason Rosenau, another field-
er’s choice play, and singles by Glaeser
and Matt Schwichtenberg all combined
to allow the Bruins to rally for five runs
and a 6-1 lead.
In the top of the eighth, Hamburg’s
Crane walked and Perlich singled to put
runners on base, with Crane scoring
when Alex Kroells grounded out to sec-
ond. But that was the last run the Bruins
allowed as they held on for a 6-2 win.
Cody Hallahan pitched a complete
game for Brownton, allowing two runs
on six hits as he fanned 13 and walked
one.
Brownton also had six hits, paced by
Glaeser with two singles and Schwicht-
enberg, Nordby, Genz and Deryk Randt
with one each.
Siebert had a six-inning start for Ham-
burg, during which he gave up six runs,
three earned, on six hits as he walked
one and beaned three. Andy Schatz
threw the final two innings, striking out
one.
Bruins 3, Carver 1
Grams threw a complete game against
Carver on Wednesday, July 2, as the Bru-
ins won another Crow River Valley
League tilt, 3-1.
Grams scattered four hits, struck out
eight and walked none.
The Black Sox scored their only run in
the bottom of the second on a double by
Tim Campbell and a sacrifice fly by Josh
Mensch.
Carver held onto its 1-0 lead until the
fifth, when the Bruins scored a run to
knot the score at 1-1. Nordby started the
frame with a walk, and reached third
when Taylor Schuette belted a double.
Nordby scored when Genz grounded out
to short.
The Bruins scored a go-ahead and an
insurance run in the seventh. Nordby was
again the lead-off batter, and laced a sin-
gle to get on base. He reached second on
Schuette’s bunt. Genz was hit by a pitch
for a free trip to first, where he was re-
placed by pinch runner Seth Schuette.
Both runners advanced on a single by
Hallahan, who was thrown out trying to
reach second. Brad Daak and Randt had
back-to-back singles that plated Nordby
and Seth Schuette.
Brownton out-hit the Black Sox 6-4,
with Nordby going two for three while

Post 641 gets swept by Norwood, thwarts Watertown 11-0
Bratsch kept the Hollanders at
zero until the fourth, when
Cologne scored all three of its
runs.
Tim Swanson took a walk be-
fore Erik Braund and Tyler
Swanson singled to make it 1-0.
Braund ended up scoring on a
wild pitch before Bratsch was
called for a balk that plated Tyler
Swanson and gave Cologne a 3-1
lead.
Defensively, Bratsch and the
Brewers responded by retiring
the Hollanders 1-2-3 in every in-
ning after the three-run fourth.
On offense, Glencoe picked
back up in the sixth as Brody
Bratsch and Trebesch scored on a
pair of Cologne errors to notch
the game at threes.
It wouldn’t take long for the
Brewers to take the lead, though,
as Trebesch and Josh Kraby gave
Glencoe the insurance it needed
in the eighth. Trebesch singled,
and Kraby was beaned before
Derek Weber notched his first hit
of the game and promptly stole
second and third before being left
on base.

Paumen had a field day against
the Dutchmen, striking out at
least one batter in every inning
except the second, accrueing 12
Ks in the process.
Keegan Macemon got the
scoring started for Glencoe in the
first after drawing a walk from
Adam Lehrke, and scored on a
sacrifice fly by Kraby to go up 1-
0.
Glencoe took off in the third as
it posted an eight on the score-
board with every starter either
notching a run or a hit, with the
exception of Brody Bratsch. But
Bratsch recorded an RBI with a
sacrifice fly to center field that
scored Macemon as the Brewers
rode a 9-0 lead into the fifth.
The highlight of the game was
a lead-off homer by Weber in the
fifth, who took Lehrke’s fourth
pitch for a sky ride over the left-
field wall as the Brewers eventu-
ally came away with a 12-0 lop-
sided victory after seven innings.
Paumen also went 2-2 at the
plate with two singles, an RBI
and was beaned once. Weber
went 2-4, notching a double and
the homer for four RBIs on the
night.

The Plato Legion Post 641 baseball
team went 1-2 last week against Water-
town and Norwood.
Most recently, Norwood’s Post 343
came away with a 12-11 victory on Sun-
day after drubbing Plato 8-0 on July 2.
Post 641 dismantled Watertown 11-0 in
six innings July 1 on the road. Cole Pe-
tersen was phenomenal in the victory over
Watertown, pitching all six innings and
striking out 11 while surrendering one hit
and a pair of walks through 20 at-bats.
But the bats swung in Norwood’s favor
a day later, as it teed off on Aaron Boraas,
scoring seven of eight runs on the right-
hander in three innings before coming
away with an 8-0 victory.
Sunday, Plato looked to exact revenge
for the loss, but wound up falling just
short 12-11.
Monday was supposed to feature a
game against Holy Family, but rain and
wind postponed the tilt to 11 a.m. Satur-
day in Plato.
Post 641 made the trek to Winsted on
Tuesday for a double header against Post
463.
As of right now, the only game remain-
ing on the team’s regular season schedule
is Saturday’s game with Holy Family.
Norwood 12,
Post 641 11
Sunday’s game against Norwood was a
stark contrast from the previous meeting
four days earlier when Post 641 was
blanked.
After one inning, the teams were
locked 2-2 until Norwood went up 4-2 in
the third.
Tyler Chap went the distance for Plato,
but couldn’t keep Norwood off the board
late in the game despite an 11-8 lead
heading into the bottom of the fifth after
Post 641 had put together back-to-back
innings of scoring.
Chap allowed the first three batters on
before recording an out. Norwood
matched Plato’s scoring in both the fourth
and fifth, retaining the lead after each in-
ning, and scoring four in the fifth for the
12-11 win.
Norwood 8,
Post 641 0
Norwood hopped out to a 2-0 lead in
the first, scoring both runs on a one-out
double before Boraas was able to get out
of the inning.
The bleeding stopped in the second, but
Norwood had runners on third and first
before shortstop Teddy Petersen flipped
the ball to Reed Wawrzyniak at second
for the 6-4 putout.
Despite the defensive help, Post 641’s
offense just wasn’t there, and Norwood
promptly took to expanding its lead with
five runs in the third before eventually
claiming the game 8-0.
Post 641 11,
Watertown 0
It makes for an easy day when your
starting pitcher only gives up one hit and
strikes out 11, and that’s exactly what
Cole Petersen did against Watertown.
The lefty overwhelmed opposing bat-
ters for six innings while offensively,
Plato finally looked like its usual produc-
tive self.
It did take a bit for the runs to come
when Levi Vorlicek, Cole Petersen and
Mason Goettl gave Post 641 a 3-0 advan-
tage in the fourth.
Bennett Bielke made it 4-0 in the fifth
before Plato batted through the order in
the sixth, amassing seven runs as every-
one but Cole Petersen and Goettl scored
in the inning.

Mason Goettl, left, fires the ball down to first after scooping up a
Norwood sacrifice bunt early in the second inning of a July 2 tilt in
Plato. Norwood came away with a clean sweep over Post 641 last
week, winning 8-0 on July 2, and 12-11 on Sunday.
Randt had one hit each. Andrew
Weber had two of Carver’s four
hits, with Campbell and Taylor
Nelson having one hit each.
Mark Ulrich threw a complete
game for Carver, giving up three
earned runs on six hits as he
struck out four and walked two.
— The Bruins have a full
schedule this week, which started
Tuesday night with a make-up
game at Hamburg. They travel to
Norwood tonight (Wednesday)
and will host Green Isle Friday
night, which also is the Bruins’
fan appreciation night. Sunday,
the Bruins travel to Glencoe for a
2 p.m. tilt, and then they will face
Carver again Tuesday, July 15, at
Norwood.

weeks after fracturing his hand
while stealing second base at
Carver.

conia Lakers on Sunday for a 1

Plato 4, Hamburg 0
Things looked a little shaky for
Wischnack to start, as he beaned
Hamburg’s Tim Willems to lead
off, but bounced back with a pair
of ground outs and a fly out to
end the inning with Willems
stranded on third.
Mueller kept the Jays scoreless
until the third, when Wischnack
forced an error from Willems. He
later scored on a hard-hit ball
down the left-field line by Chris
Odegaard that put Plato up 1-0.
Three scoreless innings ensued
before Plato fortified its lead in
the seventh with three runs.
Adam Prehn ripped Mueller’s
first pitch right up the middle and
moved over on a sacrifice bunt
by Nolan Lepel.
It looked like Prehn would get
stranded on second as Wischnack
went down swinging for the sec-
ond out. But Boomer Graup-
mann’s grounder prompted a
fielding and throwing error from
Willems at short, plating Prehn
and advancing Graupmann to
second. Things didn’t get any
better for Willems, who bobbled
a hopper by Nick Johnson in the
next at-bat before Chris Ode-
gaard recorded his second RBI of
the game with a single up the
middle.
The younger Odegaard, Matt,
followed with a walk to load the
bases for Tyler Lang. Lang
watched Mueller slowly lose his
handle, and cool, as he walked
him to score the final run of the
game.
Wischnack retired all three bat-
ters on strikes in the eighth before
letting his defense put the game
away in the ninth.
Chris Odegaard went 2-4 at the
plate with three singles and a pair
of RBIs to help lead Plato to its
12th win of the season.

Getting out of God’s Way
“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to
do.” — Ephesians 2:10
T
he late writer Flannery O’Connor kept a devotional journal when she was in her twenties and a student at the
Iowa Writers’ Workshop. It has recently been published under the title A Prayer Journal. O’Connor was a fer-
vent Catholic and her journal is filled with interesting reflections on spirituality, as well as writing, which she
saw as a way to express her spirituality and hopefully lead others to God. She laments early on that “I do not know
you God because I am in the way. Please help me to push myself aside.” Throughout the journal we witness an
earnest young woman struggling heroically to be more pious, and striving to get out of God’s way, i.e., how to get rid
of the ego and let God fill up the space. Her simultaneous struggle to destroy the ego while seeking literary fame is
sometimes the focus of her reflections, as when she says “Don’t let me ever think, dear God, that I was anything but
the instrument for Your story, just like the typewriter was mine.” God desires to work through all of us, through our
words and our deeds, if we can only get our egos out of His way.
