Paumen, who won Game 1 with 42⁄3 innings of two-hit relief July 25, was better as a starter Sunday. The righthander allowed two singles, issued two walks and permitted no runner to reach third base while pitching Glencoe to a 7-0 victory over the Dutchmen and into the Region 7 (Class C) tournament at Young America’s Wilkomen Park. The Brewers (10-13) face CRVL South Division top seed Green Isle in a first-round clash Thursday. First pitch is scheduled for 8 p.m. Back to Sunday: Paumen needed to throw only 94 pitches to claim his shutout. Sixty-seven were strikes. “He was on,” Wawrzyniak said. “He had three pitches going for him.” Wawrzyniak said Paumen changed

Plato plays next in state opener this Friday a.m.
By Lee Ostrom Sports Editor dam Prehn ripped three doubles and knocked home three runs, and Ethan Maass spun a brilliant two-hitter, as the Plato American Legion Post 641 baseball team topped Jordan 5-0 in Sunday’s (July 29) championship game of the Third District (Division II) tournament in LeSueur. After compiling a 6-0 record at the double-elimination event, Plato takes its 14-4 overall mark to Sacred Heart for this weekend’s Division II state tournament. Post 641 tangles with Eden Valley-Watkins in Friday’s opening game of the first round, with first pitch at 9:30 a.m. Format for the state eight is singleelimination with full consolation brackets. The state champion advances to Wahpeton, N.D., for this year’s Central Plains Regional. *** Plato outscored three opponents by a combined tally of 29-6 during the 16-team district tournament’s first weekend. That advanced Post 641 to a July 27 showdown with Jordan, the only other team to avoid a loss during the first three rounds. The first meeting did not disappoint for back-and-forth drama. Getting a two-out, two-run single from Cole Petersen in the second and an aggressive, self-manufactured run by Maass in the fifth, Plato built a 3-1 lead. However, Jordan rallied off Prehn for three runs on three hits after two were out in the sixth. Jordan threatened for more in the seventh, but Prehn performed an es-

Post 641 junior Ethan Maass blanked Jordan on two hits during Sunday’s championship game in LeSueur. Only one Jordan runner
reached second base against the Plato lefty, who walked two while striking out nine.
WCC schedule toughened champs
Derek Weber said being a part of Plato Legion Post 641’s Third District championship team is nice, especially after a “not-so-good” GSL High School baseball season. After eight straight winning seasons by GSL teams, the 2012 Panthers finished 9-12 overall, including a 7-11 chart in the rugged Wright County Conference. Those 18 tests against WCC teams, though, might have been perfect preparation for a Post 641 team entering a Division II district tournament. Dean Schwirtz, who coaches the school team in the spring and the Legion team in the summer, said none of the other district teams faces betChronicle sports editor Lee Ostrom is at leeo@glencoenews.com

ter competition or sees better pitching during the school season. “Our WCC is really loaded,” said Ethan Maass, who pitched a two-hit shutout in Sunday’s title game. “I thought we had the best (pitching) rotation” among the district teams, said Adam Prehn, one of two graduated GSL seniors, with Weber,

on the Post 641 roster. Catcher Reed Dunbar thought the Post 641 team’s confidence really surged after the boys hit the ball so well while going undefeated in three first-weekend games. Weber, reminded of Schwirtz’s comments about Maass pitching with a “swagger” lately, said Post 641 “played really good baseball” the last two weekends. “I think the whole team has good swagger,” Weber said. It’s a tight team, too; one Maass said has strong chemistry. “We’ve all been friends forever,” Weber said. *** The last time a Glencoe/Plato team went to an American Legion state tournament, the 1990 Eagles defeated Lamberton, 2-0, in the Divi-
sion II championship game at Richfield. Dean Schwirtz played shortstop in that title game. To reach the finale, the Eagles defeated Swanville, 4-3 in 14 innings, and Brooklyn Center, 3-1. *** This year’s quarterfinals, each scheduled for Friday at Sacred Heart, are as follows: GAME 1: Plato vs. Eden ValleyWatkins, 9:30 a.m. GAME 2: Stewartville vs. Luverne, noon. GAME 3: Paynesville vs. Ely, 4 p.m. GAME 4: Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton vs. (host) Sacred Heart, 7 p.m. Five games Saturday, with game for third place (11:30 a.m.) and championship game (2 p.m.) Sunday.

Carver’s 5th seeds sweep past Plato’s 4th seeds; win 8-0, 1-0
By Lee Ostrom Sports Editor Lefty twirlers Ross Tichy and Michael Patton combined on a five-hit shutout, and Matt Moes knocked home the game’s lone run with a twoout single in the fifth inning, as Carver completed a two-game series sweep of the Plato Blue Jays last Thursday evening in Hamburg. As a result, the Black Sox (15-12) advance to their first Region 7 (Class C) tournament. The fifth-place team in the Crow River Valley League’s rugged South Division during the regular season, Carver plays North Division top seed — and 2011 state runner-up — Waconia in the region’s opener Thursday at Young America. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. As for Plato, which did not plate a run off Carver pitching in 18 innings, its season ends after 15 victories in 25 total games. “Before the series started, if anybody had told us we wouldn’t score a run against Carver,” Jays skipper Adam Dammann said, “I would have wondered what that person was talking about.” But Black Sox pitchers threw strikes and their error-free fielders made plays. In the July 24 opener, won 8-0 by the Sox, Lukas Sand was the first star. The big righty gave up five hits while walking none. Sand only got stronger as the game moved along. With two out and Derek Dittmer on third in the fifth inning, Sand struck out Hunter Dunbar to end the threat and start a stretch where he retired 11 Blue Jays in a row. The streak ended when Sand plunked Matt Odegaard with a pitch one out into the ninth inning. However, the game ended when Sand got the next batter. Eric Engelmann, to bounce into a double play. Veteran Plato ace Tony Wischnack matched Sand the first time through the Carver batting order, but gave up one run in the fourth inning; then four more — on back-to-back, two-run doubles by Anthony Gross and Tim Campbell — in the fifth. Dammann said Wischnack pitched with a tender “calf muscle” on his plant (left) leg, an injury brought about while running the bases during the final weekend of the regular season. Following three straight infield hits to the front of the mound and a walk, Wischnack was relieved by Jacob

Bruins sweep past Cologne
The Brownton Bruins swept the Cologne Hollanders in two games last week, earning a berth in the Region 7(C) tournament. Brownton is the second seed from the South Division and will play Watertown, the third seed in the North, Friday at 8 p.m. The Bruins beat Watertown 9-5 during regular-season play June 27. “We did win that game with them, but the game was very evenly matched,” noted Bruins’ manager Doug Schuette. “Watertown has a mix of veteran players and good, young ballplayers.” Watertown drafted New Germany pitcher Chad Jones, but Schuette expects the Red Devils to start their own Justin Kohls. “Justin usually has good control of his pitches, so our hitters will need to be aggressive early in the count,” said Schuette. Schuette is reserving his decision on the Bruins’ starting arm until after Wednesday’s practice session. The Bruins drafted Hamburg pitcher Mike Mueller. Other drafts include Green Isle, Tony Wischnack of Plato; Young America, Darran Greene of Hamburg; Carver, Alex Buckentine of Cologne; Waconia, Steve Mielke of New Germany; Winsted, Mike Schrupp of New Germany; and Glencoe, Trevor Luedke of New Germany. Heller scored when Deryk Randt hit into a fielder’s choice play, and both Schuette and Randt scored on Spencer Glaeser’s two-run single. But the Bruins’ lead was short-lived, as Brett Pexa blasted one out of the park for two runs that knotted the score at 3-3. Brownton broke that tie in the top of the eighth with four runs. After Schuette was hit by a pitch and Nordby singled, Hollander Alex Buckentine put two down swinging. But he walked Glaeser to load the bags and hit Brad Daak with a pitch to plate Schuette. Blake Lindeman then nailed a double that scored three runs. T.J. Koehler came on in relief for Cologne in the ninth, and allowed Brownton an insurance run as Nordby singled to plate Michael Hahn, who was pinch running for Heller, who also singled. Ryan Grams earned the win for Brownton, pitching into the ninth inning, in which he struck out two, before the Hollanders loaded the bases with two walks and a single. Joe Ahlers struck out Chris Doney swinging to record the final out of the game. Grams allowed three earned runs on eight hits, struck out 10 and walked three. Brownton had 10 hits to Cologne’s eight. Nordby had three of those with one RBI. Heller had two hits, and Daak, Lindeman, Schuette, Randt and Glaeser each had one. The Bruins won 8-1 over Cologne Friday behind the arm of Ahlers, who gave up just three hits, struck out six and walked four in a completegame appearance. The Hollanders’ only run was scored in the top of the first. After recording the first out, Ahlers walked two. Tyler Swensen scored on an outfield error. Brownton tied the game in the bottom of the first, as Matt Schwichtenberg’s base hit scored Daak, who also singled and stole both second and third bases. Schwichtenberg and Schuette drove in a run each in the third to put Brownton ahead 3-1. The Bruins added three runs in the fourth, two on Schwichtenberg’s single and one on Glaeser’s groundout to short. Schuette drove in two runs on a single in the sixth to cap the Bruins’ scoring. Brownton pounded out 16 hits off the Hollanders’ Brett Pexa (31⁄3 innings) and Brandon Buesgens (41⁄3). Schuette had three hits and three RBI, Daak had three hits, Schwichtenberg had two hits and four RBI, Heller had two hits, and Grams, Nordby, Randt, Jason Rosenau, Glaeser and Chad Draeger each had one.

Brownton opened the best two-of-three series against the Hollanders Wednesday, July 25, in Norwood, bringing home an 8-3 win. Trailing 1-0, Brownton posted three runs in the top of the fourth. cape act by coaxing lead-off batter Michael Huss to bang into a pitcher-to-shortstop-tofirst baseman double play. Still, Jordan ace Nate Beckman was within two outs of victory after pinch-hitter Parker Kerslake grounded out sharply to third to start the bottom of the seventh. But ahead 0-2 in the count to Teddy Petersen, Beckman missed on four straight pitches; then threw wildly trying to pick off Petersen. After a wild pitch and a walk to Maass, Petersen beat third baseman Jonny Kreuser’s wild throw home on Prehn’s bouncer. Up to bat came clean-up stick Nolan Lepel, who drilled a 2-0 pitch to center for a clean single that scored Maass and ended the game. “At 2-0, it’s got to be a perfect pitch,” Lepel said. Was the fastball Beckman served at 2-0 in a perfect location for Lepel? “It was,” the slugger said. The following day, Plato stayed unbeaten while eliminating Norwood Young America, 4-1, behind Cole Petersen’s pitching. Teddy Petersen doubled to ignite a three-run first inning; then Derek Weber doubled and later scored on Teddy Petersen’s sacrifice fly in the second. That’s all Cole Petersen needed. The lefty pitched a three-hitter in which he walked one and struck out one. NYA’s lone run was unearned — as were all four of Plato’s runs off Isaac Herrmann. “(Cole) was always getting ahead in the count,” catcher Reed Dunbar said. Maass, after his Sunday gem, said his fastball and curveball worked so well, he didn’t use his changeup. “I felt in real good control out there,” he said. “I felt like the game was mine.” Plato struck right away in the top of the first, getting singles by Teddy Petersen and Maass, a two-run double by Prehn and an RBI groundout by Dunbar.

speeds well and pitched to spots. “He showed everyone that he’s a big-game pitcher,” he said. Paumen did not need a lot of support, but his teammates gave him five third-inning runs anyway, making New Germany pay dearly for three errors, plus a walk. The big blast of the rally was Josh Kraby’s bases-loaded double that hit half-way up the fence in the left field corner. At first observation, Wawrzyniak thought Kraby was launching a grand-slam home run. Outfielder Ryan Style later capped Glencoe’s big inning with a bloop RBI single over a drawn-in New Germany infield. Style, after rapping out three hits in the series opener, went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs in Game 3. Batting against Steve Mielke (22⁄3 IP) and reliever Chad Jones, Glencoe collected seven hits in all. *** — Game 1 was tied 2-2 when Glencoe’s Grant Grochow ignited a four-run bottom of the seventh with a two-run single over second base. The Brewers won, 7-3. — Game 2 was tied 2-2 when New Germany struck for four runs on six hits in the bottom of the eighth. The Dutchmen won, 6-2. Trevor Leudke and Glencoe’s John Thell pitched complete games in the second game.

Farm Service Agency announces continuous sign-up for HELI
Linda Hennen, USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) state executive director for Minnesota, announced that continuous sign-up for the Highly Erodible Land Initiative (HELI) under the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) started on July 23 and offers will be accepted until either the state acreage allocation limit is reached or Sept. 30, whichever occurs first. Minnesota received a total allocation of 11,200 acres to enroll in the HELI CRP program. “CRP is a voluntary program that has protected environmentally sensitive land for more than 25 years,” said Hennen. “This initiative will accept offers with an erosion rate of at least 20 tons per acre per year for new cropland or CRP acres that expire on Sept. 30; however, existing grass stands that are not considered expiring CRP will not be considered eligible,” she said. Producers can stop by the local USDA FSA Service Center to determine if their land qualifies for the HELI and to receive additional location-specific details. Landowners enrolled in CRP receive annual rental payments and cost-share assistance to establish longterm, resource conserving covers on eligible farmland. Incentive payments are not authorized under this initiative. New land contracts approved during this continuous sign-up initiative will become effective the first day of the month following the month of approval and are valid for 10 years. CRP contracts set to expire on September 30, may be offered for consideration and approved contracts will become effective Oct. 1, and are also valid for 10 years. Producers are encouraged to contact their local FSA service center or visit FSA’s website at http://www.fsa. usda.gov/crp for additional information regarding CRP.
