GSL graduate was head athletic trainer for women’s volleyball silver medalists in London
By Alyssa Schauer Staff Writer he summer Olympic Games are a sort of novelty, occurring only every four years. Many of us are lucky to be able to watch the Games from our own comfy couches at home. However, one former Silver Lake resident and Glencoe-Silver Lake High School graduate earned the opportunity to attend as a participant in the 2012 Olympic Games. Jill Wosmek, daughter of Mike and Sandy Wosmek, now of Dassel, is currently in her third year as the full-time certified athletic trainer for the United States Women’s National Volleyball Team. She is a 1999 graduate from GSL where she participated in volleyball, basketball and softball. “I started in the athletic training field at Mankato, where I completed my undergrad,” Wosmek said. She earned a bachelor’s of science degree in athletic training— a Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAA-

She also studied corporate and community fitness and wellness at Mankato, and competed in four sports at the intramural level. She has been a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) since 2001, and she completed the NATA Board of Certification in 2003. “After Mankato, I went to school at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities to study kinesiology,” Wosmek said. She graduated with a master’s degree in kinesiology in May 2005, and she successfully defended and published her master’s thesis, “Concepts Related to the Protonics Neuromuscular Repositioning System and Supporting Case Reports.” While at the University of Minnesota, she also worked as a graduate assistant, primarily covering athletic training for women’s rowing and both tennis teams.
After earning her master’s degree, Wosmek served as an assistant athletic trainer at the University of South Carolina-Aiken. There, she worked with all of the school’s 13 athletic programs from August 2005 to June 2007. In August of 2007, she started working as the athletic trainer for the Penn State University women’s and men’s volleyball teams. During her time at Penn State, the Nittany Lion women’s volleyball team won two NCAA Division 1 titles and the men’s volleyball team won a NCAA National Collegiate Volleyball Championship title. She also worked as an Approved Clinical Instructor for the athletic training students at Penn State. Wosmek worked at Penn State until 2009, before starting her position in the USA Volleyball’s sports medicine program as the full-time certified athletic trainer for the U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team.

Post 641 was both good and lucky

How did they do it? After an unspectacular 8-4 regular season, how did the boys of Plato American Legion Post 641’s baseball team catch fire in the post-season tournaments? How did they find what it takes to win a state championship, place third in a six-state regional and complete a 20-win season? Head coach Dean Schwirtz said
good fortune, belief in the team and “phenomenal” starting pitching all contributed. “We had some breaks go our way,” Schwirtz said, “but our kids really stayed together; ... they believed in their team.” During one four-win stretch of games, Plato won three times in its last at-bats. It started in the first round at state,
where after seven scoreless innings, Plato and Eden Valley-Watkins each plated a run in the eighth. Then Post 641 erupted for four scores in the ninth — and a 5-1 win. It contined in the championship game with Adam Prehn’s walk-off, two-run homer with two out in the last of the seventh— turning a 3-2 deficit into a 4-3 win over Ely. And it concluded with Derek
Weber’s walk-off double in the 10th inning of the Central Plains opener – and a 3-2 win over Wisconsin Dells. Plato was both good and lucky. It operated as a team, showing new difference-makers from game to game, while having stars Prehn and Ethan Maass play and pitch like stars. Schwirtz also gave credit to all the GSL youth coaches who volunteer their time and talents.
Post 641 places 3rd in Central Plains
By Lee Ostrom Sports Editor The Plato American Legion Post 641 baseball team did not score a run in two games against tournament host Wahpeton (N.D.), but the Minnesota Division II state champions beat every other opponent they faced at last weekend’s Central Plains Regional. Wahpeton, which counted 1-0 and 3-0 victories over Plato among its total, emerged as the champion of the eight-team, double-elimination event — which brought together two teams each from Minnesota and North Dakota, plus solo representatives from Wisconsin, South Dakota, Kansas and Nevada. Plato, which had won nine consecutive post-season games while winning district and state titles, made it 10 in a row with a walk-off win in 10 innings over Wisconsin Dells last Thursday (Aug. 9). Following its first loss to Wahpeton, Plato defeated Las

Vegas (Nevada) and Ely (Minn.), which made it one of three teams to advance to Sunday’s final two games — each survivor with one loss. Wahpeton downed Plato; then defeated Ely. As a result, Post 641 finished third in the regional with a final season record of 20-6. Brief looks at Plato’s tournament: • Plato 3, Wisconsin Dells 2. Derek Weber’s oneout double in the bottom of the 10th inning scored Travis Rothstein with the winning run. Weber’s walk-off hit allowed Adam Prehn to notch a win. Prehn threw 121 pitches — including 75 strikes — in a commanding completegame performance. The righthander was tagged for only five hits, all singles. • Wahpeton 1, Plato 0. Tyler Gripentrog shut out Post 641 on three hits. Plato’s Ethan Maass allowed only two hits. The game’s lone run was unearned. • Plato 7, Las Vegas 5. Prehn’s two-out, two-run single capped a four-run second inning, helping Cole Petersen notch a win. Rothstein went 2-for-2. • Plato 10, Ely 0. Derek Bratsch notched a completegame win, limiting Ely to four hits. Prehn led a 16-hit attack, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Teddy Petersen, Nolan Lepel, Reed Dunbar, Parker Kerslake, Brody Bratsch and Weber also had multi-hit games. • Wahpeton 3, Plato 0. Jeremy Bontjes shut down Plato on two hits. Bontjes struck out six and walked none. Prehn, after pitching four scoreless innings, gave up a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth. *** Three Plato players were named to the regional’s alltourney team. They are Prehn, Teddy Petersen and Derek Bratsch.

“Here, I am the head athletic trainer for the team. Essentially, I am the primary sports medicine professional working with these women on a consistent basis,” Wosmek explained. “My job responsibilities range from assessing acute injury, therapy plans, rehabilitation, sports performance, nutrition, sports psychology and more,” she added. “As a traveling member of the team, I am also involved in pre-practice treatments and lengthy core and dynamic warm-ups with the team daily,” she said. As head athletic trainer, Wosmek also monitors practicies and completes post-practice treatments. She also designs and implements the weight training program for the team. “I know a lot of times I become a mentor, a voice of reason, a cheerleader, and a ‘parent,’” she added. “Being here in London with Team USA is definitely a privilege. “The atmosphere can be exhausting at times, but it is surreal to be surrounded by such great athletes who have worked so hard to compete on the Olympic stage,” she said. The team finished the tournament with a 7-1 record, falling one victory shy of winning its first-ever Olympic Games gold-medal during Saturday’s game. The team held a 30-2 record for 2012, and earned a silver medal after losing to Brazil on Saturday.

Bruins Continued from page 1B
Kohler all slugged doubles. Brownton made Tony Kley work hard, but could not come up with a big hit in the clutch. The Bruins’ best chance came in the sixth, when they loaded the bases with consecutive singles by Brad Daak, Grams and Matt Schwichtenberg. Kley struck out the next two batters, but Bryant Nordby singled home Daak. When Grams tried to score, too, he was cut down at the plate.

Romero sentenced to Back to school time even for littlest ones 96 months in prison
Amy Ann Romero, 30, appeared in Sibley County District Court Aug. 8 and pleaded guilty to felony manslaughter in the second degree in the death of her newborn daughter in April 2001. Romero was indicted by a Sibley County Grand Jury on Jan. 19, 2012, with seven felony charges ranging from murder in the first degree to endangerment or neglect of a child. Romero was accused of abandoning her newborn in the woods near Henderson in 2001. She later moved to Missouri, where she was arrested in 2011. The guilty plea, before Judge Thomas G. McCarthy, was based on neglect or endangerment of a child, according to Sibley County Attorney David Schauer. The other charges were dismissed as part of the plea agreement. While sentencing guidelines call for imprisonment of 48 months, Romero agreed to the double upward departure of 96 months, Schauer said. In early July, Romero sought to have the grand jury indictments dismissed, but the district court rejected the motion on July 16. “The resolution was a good outcome to a very difficult case,” Schauer said. “The resolution was in the interests of justice and was made after consulting with law enforcement.” Schauer added that “the case was challenging in that abandonment of the child occurred in April 2001, there was no body found, that under Minnesota law the confessions/statements of Ms. Romero were required to be corroborated by independent evidence, and that the death was required to be established by independent facts. “The end result was that Ms. Romero did acknowledge her responsibility for the death of the child and will spend significant time in prison for her actions,” Schauer said. Schauer said he especially appreciated the work of Sibley County Chief Deputy Pat Nienaber and sheriff’s office investigator Jason Ruehling for their work on the case as well as the work of Assistant County Attorneys Donald Lannoye and Bryce Ehrman. Brownton Lions Corn Feed, BARK Day
Todd Kalenberg was among the bean-baggers at Saturday’s tournament, hosted by BARK. Kickball, bean bags, and multitude of other events were the order of the day Saturday as the Brownton Area Resources for Kids (BARK) hosted its fourth-annual fund-raising event. Above Makayla Wigern, daughter of Kyle and Holly Wigern, participates in the kids’ kickball game.
A large crowd of runners and walkers were up and at it early Saturday morning for BARK’s 5K run/walk. The race was followed by a one-mile children’s run, a scav-
enger hunt to benefit the food shelf, and the opening of the kickball and bean bag tournaments.
Wyatt Hamilton of Hutchinson enjoyed dinner during the Brownton Lions’ sweet corn feed Friday night, which led into Saturday’s BARK activities. He is the son of Stefan and Missy Hamilton, the grandson of Denise and John Hamilton, also of Hutchinson, and great-grandson of Dennis and Diane Sweely of Brownton.
“Clown Town” activities, inflatable rides and pony rides were all popular Saturday afternoon activities. Above, Savan-
nah Sweely, daughter of David and Nancy Sweely, enjoys a pony ride.
The Brownton Lions Club also sponsored a kids pedal-tractor pull competition Friday night after the corn feed.
Among the competitors was Landon Matheny, above, son of Lance and Andrea Matheny of Brownton.
