S
Plato crowned region champs
By Tom Carothers
Sports Editor
For the second time in three
seasons, the Plato Blue Jays
are headed to the state tourna-
ment as a region champion.
The Blue Jays claimed the
Region 7C title on Sunday,
Aug. 16, after holding off a
stern challenge from the Wa-
conia Lakers in the champi-
onship round at Irish Yard in
Green Isle.
“It feels real good,” manag-
er Adam Dammann said. “The
stars aligned for us a bit, but
we worked hard to accomplish
one of our season goals – we
feel very good about coming
out on top.”
After emerging unscathed
through the first weekend of
regional play, Plato kicked off
the second and final weekend
in top form by upending
Green Isle 10-4 in the champi-
onship bracket semifinal on
Saturday, Aug. 15.
The Irish had swept the reg-
ular-season series from the
Blue Jays, winning both in
Plato and in Green Isle. But
the tide turned in a major way
for the third meeting, with the
Blue Jays staking themselves
to a 3-0 lead in the fourth – 7-
0 after the top of the seventh –
before the game wrapped up
with Plato winning by six
runs.
Tyler Lang had the big blast
via a two-run homer, with
Matt Odegaard tallying three
RBI with a pair of doubles.
Chris Odegaard was 3-for-6
with two RBI and three runs
scored.
“Green Isle has always been
strong and we knew it’d be a
dogfight,” Dammann said.
“But our guys really came out
and hit the ball well off a real-
ly good pitcher in Mac Za-
chow. We just had a good
game.”
Plato starting pitcher Cody
Hallahan earned his second
victory of the tournament. He
struck out six batters, allowing
three hits, two walks and one
earned run in six innings of
work.
Brownton Bruins draftee
Dylan McCormick saw his
first work of the regional,
tossing two innings with two
strikeouts, two walks and one
earned run allowed. Tony Wis-
chnack also threw an inning,
giving up two earned runs –
one earned – to close out the
contest.
There would be no regional
rematch as Waconia emerged
from the one-loss bracket to
challenge Plato for 7C su-
premacy on an overcast Sun-
day afternoon. The Blue Jays
needed just one win to claim
the title and had one of their
very best – Adam Prehn – on
the hill to start the day.
However, the Lakers
showed they would be no
doormat to the region champi-
onship. Waconia put up three
quick runs in the second in-
ning and held on to claim a 4-
2 win to force a second and
deciding game.
“We didn’t make it easy on
ourselves,” Dammann said.
Both teams combined for 21
hits despite the five runs
scored in Game 1. Game 2
saw 17 total hits pounded out
between the teams with three
runs posted between the
squads in the first inning
alone.
Plato, playing as the visiting
team for the second game,
promptly got on the board in
the top of the first after Chris
and Matt Odegaard led off
with back-to-back singles and
were eventually brought
home, respectively, on an RBI
sacrifice fly by Nolan Lepel

The Plato Blue Jays (above) won their second Region 7C title in the past three
seasons after defeating the Waconia Lakers in the championship round on Sun-
day, Aug. 16 at Irish Yard in Green Isle. Plato earned a first-round bye for the up-
coming state tournament by winning the region. Tony Wischnack (below right)
pitched eight innings of one-run ball to claim the victory, 2-1, over the Lakers in a
winner-take-all second game after Waconia handed the Blue Jays their first loss of
regional play in the championship opener Sunday afternoon. Plato opens the state
tournament at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 29, in Watkins.

Dennis Roisum
circa 1994
and an RBI single by Joe Nix.
Waconia cut that lead to 2-1
in the blink of an eye in the
bottom of the first after start-
ing their initial at-bat with a
single, a walk and an RBI sin-
gle before Wischnack, the
Blue Jays’ starting pitcher for
the afternoon “nightcap,”
coaxed the Lakers into a foul
pop-up and two infield
groundouts.
While the offensive antics
had many at Irish Yard believ-
ing Game 2 was primed to be
a slugfest, those first-inning
runs proved to be the only to
cross the plate for the remain-
der of the game as 2-1 held up
for the eventual final score.
Despite putting up 10 hits
and placing several runs in
scoring position throughout
the contest, Plato was unable
to pad its lead. No matter,
however, as Wischnack posted
seven scoreless frames after
allowing the first-inning run.
Chris Odegaard came on to
close out the game in the
ninth, and after a few tense
moments, locked down the
save, Wischnack’s win and the
region-clinching victory.
“It was nerve wracking, but
we didn’t lose our compo-
sure,” Dammann said. “We
kept our balance.”
With the region title, the
Blue Jays earned a first-round
bye for the Class C State
Tournament, which is sched-
uled to begin this weekend. In
addition to getting to sit out
the first weekend of state tour-
ney play, Plato also earned the
No. 1 draft pick with which to
select pitching reinforcements
for the remainder of the sea-
son.
With the first pick, the team
selected Winsted hurler Tony
Kley, an all-state tournament
selection in 2014. Brownton
pitcher Bryant Nordby was
the Blue Jays’ second draftee.
While two pitchers are join-
ing the roster, a pair of key
contributors are also departing
the Plato roster – at least tem-
porarily.
Nolan Lepel and Ben Slater
will miss the Blue Jays’ state
opener against either
Shakopee or Lamberton on
Saturday, Aug. 29 in Watkins
due to collegiate commit-
ments. However, Dammann
said that if the Blue Jays ad-
vance past their first game, the
pair could return for the main
thrust of tournament play
from Sept. 5-7.
However, advancing to the
Labor Day weekend is far
from a given. Plato won the
region and earned a first-
round bye in 2013, but was
eliminated from the tourna-
ment after just one game in a
loss to New Prague.
“A number of No. 1 seeds
don’t advance,” Dammann
said. “I think having that week
off is difficult for a number of
teams, but for us, I think it
will be helpful. Some of our
guys are banged up and can
use the time to heal up and it
will be good to let our pitchers
rest up as well.”
Plato, which enters the
Class C tourney with a 25-7
overall record, will need four
wins in Cold Spring and
Watkins to find itself playing
for a state title on Monday,
Sept. 7. The Blue Jays previ-
ously won state champi-
onships in 1996 and 2007.
“There’s going to be a lot of
good baseball played on some
beautiful fields,” Dammann
said. “We’d like to see as
many of our fans up there as
possible.”
Glencoe youth swimmers make mark for High Tides
A group of children from Glencoe
competed in both state and regional
competition recently as members of
the Hutchinson High Tides Swim
Club.
Madison, Mikayla and Anthony
Witte were joined by Jaci Lemke in
the 2015 Long Course State Meet
July 31-Aug. 2 with both Madison
and Mikayla Witte competing for
Team Minnesota at the Central Zone
Long Course Championship Aug. 7-
9. Both meets took place at the Uni-
versity of Minnesota Aquatic Center.
Madison Witte earned the high
points award for 10-and-under girls
at the state meet after swimming in
six individual events and two relays.
She finished second in the 200-
meter IM, third in the 50-meter but-
terfly and fifth in the 50-meter
freestyle. She also teamed up with
Lemke in a pair of relays – the 200-
meter freestyle, which placed 15th,
and the 200-meter medley, which
came in 17th. Both relay teams
dropped over 20 seconds from their
previous best finishes.
Mikayla Witte, who is 12-years-
old, swam in six individual events,
one time trial and four relays. She
placed 14th individually in the 50-
meter backstroke, while all four of
her relay teams claimed top-10 re-
sults. Her 200-meter freestyle and
medley relay teams both took sixth,
with the 400-meter freestyle placed
seventh and the 400-meter medley
came in 10th.
Eight-year-old Anthony Witte fin-
ished 10th with the 200-meter med-
ley relay and 12th with the 200-
meter freestyle relay in 10-and-
under competition.
Madison and Mikayla Witte were
among eight members of the High
Tides to advance to the Central Zone
meet as part of Team Minnesota.
Madison Witte swam in six indi-
vidual events and two relays at the
meet. Individually, she placed fourth
in the 50-meter butterfly, fifth in the
100-meter butterfly, seventh in the
100-meter freestyle, eighth in the
100-meter backstroke, ninth in the
200-meter IM and 17th in the 50-
meter backstroke. She helped her
200-meter freestyle relay team to a
second-place finish and her 200-
meter medley relay quartet to a
third-place result.
Mikayla Witte swam in four indi-
vidual events in the 11-12 girls com-
petition. She took 54th in the 50-
meter freestyle, 56th in the 50-meter
backstroke, 72nd in the 100-meter
freestyle and 77th in the 50-meter
butterfly.

New beginnings
T
his time of year is filled with many new beginnings and they are never without a measure of anxious-
ness. It companions us from home to preschool, elementary to middle school, high school to post-sec-
ondary education, in work or business transitions, as we enter into marriage or experience any life-
changing reality. Our lives often mirror an aerial view depicting roadways that spider outward to an infinity of
possibilities. Even when we feel a measure of confidence about a given path, the uncertainty of the many un-
knowns cause us angst. We wonder if we can actually achieve our hoped for goal or dream that lies in some
distant, ever-changing future; we question our abilities and worthiness.
Lao Tzu, a Chinese philosopher, has said, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” His
intention was to communicate that no matter how “humble” our beginning or distant the goal, we will encounter
and experience amazing things when we put one foot ahead of the other. Good words to remember!
However, anxiousness is not our “only” companion as we travel the way set before us. Jesus said, “I am the
way, the truth and the Life.” Wherever your journey takes you in the days, months, and years ahead, be confi-
dent that Jesus goes with you. Never be afraid to confide in him or lean on him, for his compassionate love and
mercy are steadfast and everlasting! Good words for living the life that unfolds before you!
This weekly message is contributed by the following concerned citizens and businesses who
urge you to attend the church of your choice. To be added to this page, contact us at 320-864-5518.
