pitcher Cole Petersen after defeating
Waupun, Wisc., 5-1 in the Great
Plains Division II championship
game on Sunday. Above right, Teddy

earning recognition as the tourna-

also took home the trophy for the
best tournament average as he went

Plato’s Adam Prehn couldn’t stop Nate
Pilacinski from scoring Green Isle’s first
run on a passed ball in the first inning of
Saturday’s Region 7C semifinal game in
Brownton. Prehn’s pitch got past catcher
Tony Beringer, allowing Pilacinski the
free base, but not without cost, as the
Irishman dislocated his pinky on the play.

After winning the championship
game, Post 641 met the Plato Fire
Department just outside of Glencoe
and received an escort all the way
back to the Plato C-Store on U.S.
Highway 212 with a line of honking
cars in tow. The team barreled out
the door of its coach bus with the
championship trophy held high to a
parking lot full of cheering fans.

Friday night’s battle be-
tween the Brownton Bruins
and Winsted Wildcats to de-
termine Region 7C’s fourth
entry to the state tournament
provided some classic ama-
teur baseball action.
A true pitchers’ duel be-
tween two of the Crow River
Valley League’s best hurlers
— Brownton’s Cody Halla-
han and Winsted’s Tony Kley
— ended with the Wildcats
pulling out a 2-1 win.
And the winning run was
scored in classic fashion —
Joe Kley banged a solo home
run off the scoreboard in left-
center field in the sixth in-
ning.
The Wildcats now advance
to the state tournament, while
the Bruins’ season comes to
an end.
Brownton scored the first
run in the third inning with
two outs. Spencer Glaeser
was hit by a pitch to get on
base, and wheeled all the way
around to home on a double
smashed by Ryan Grams.

The Brownton Bruins gathered for a
pep talk before Friday night’s game
against Winsted, which determined
which of the two teams would qualify
for the state Class C tournament. In the
center is catcher Bryant Nordby; with
their backs to the camera are Jason
Rosenau, Ryan Grams and Dylan Mc-
Cormick.

The phrase, “To the victor go the
spoils,” refers to the treasures one re-
ceived — or took — after a victorious
war. Gold was a common claim, along
with history. Plato Legion Post 641
claimed both at the American Legion Di-
vision II Central Plains Baseball Tourna-
ment in Millbank, S.D., this past week-
end, bringing home the region champi-
onship.
Accomplishing such a feat was no easy
task. Plato went 4-1 over the four-day
tournament, with three of those games
coming against the team from Waupun,
Wisc., which handed Post 641 its only
loss of the event.
Being crowned region champions for
the first time in the program’s history is
quite the achievement for a team from a
town out in the middle of nowhere, said
Head Coach Matt Odegaard.
“It makes me laugh; people have no
idea where we’re from and we play great
baseball,” said Odegaard. “We’ve got a
great system that Dean (Schwirtz) has set
up, and a lot of these guys have been
playing together for a long time. It’s a
good team atmosphere.”
While the team gets credit for the
championship, one player — Teddy Pe-
tersen — earned two individual awards
for his ridiculous performance while in
Millbank and Webster, S.D.
Taking home the MVP (Most Valuable
Player) trophy and Slugger award for his
.764 average, shortstop Teddy Petersen
said, “God blessed me with a lot of talent
and I came home with the ‘Big Stick’
award, which is for the best average in
the tournament, and the MVP, which my
teammates helped out with. But I was

The Plato Blue Jays en-
tered the championship week-
end of the Region 7C tourna-
ment on the heels of a four-
game win streak in which
they scored 49 runs to their
opponents’ seven. One
could’ve made the case that
the Jays were hot-blooded,
until their offense fell as cold
as ice Saturday, falling to Wa-
conia first 6-4, and later to
Green Isle 9-6.
One wouldn’t necessarily
say that Plato is backing into
the Class C state tournament
after the two losses, but con-
sidering the offensive on-
slaught displayed over the
first three weeks of the post-
season and the disappointing
display in Brownton on Sat-
urday, the Blue Jays definite-
ly didn’t finish the region
tournament the way they
wanted to.
“We didn’t play normal
Blue Jay baseball. It was def-

feeling it hitting-wise on the
weekend.”
That may be putting it light-
ly, as the high school junior
went 13-17 and scored 10
runs, including four of the 14
scored against the team from
Fort Scott, Kan.
“There were a good amount
of bloopers in there. I got
lucky sometimes, but I had a
couple good shots,” joked
Teddy Petersen. “They’re all
hits in the stat book, ” he
added with a laugh.
Despite being tasked with
five games in four days, Post
641 managed to stay loose and
relaxed. Part of that, Teddy
Petersen said, came from
being able to trust each other.
“They (the rest of Post 641)
just kind of go out and play
and they know their team-
mates are behind them,” said
Teddy Petersen, “and I think
that support really helps
them.”
Assistant Coach Tom Chap
said he noticed a glaring dif-
ference between Post 641 and
the rest of the teams: “We
were loose,” Chap said non-
chalantly, whereas their oppo-
nents seemed to be uptight
and tense, he said.
After that was brought to
his attention, utility infielder
Nolan Lepel asked Chap’s
thoughts on why Post 641’s
mentality was so laid-back
and calm.
“I told him, ‘I think you
guys are too stupid to realize
you’re in a national champi-
onship game,’” a laughing
Chap recalled. “He just looked
at me and said, ‘I think you’re
right!”
Odegaard laughed and
agreed with his assistant’s ob-
servation, and added, “We
play complete baseball ... The
biggest thing is that they’re a
great group of guys, and an
easy group to coach. They
know their weaknesses and
their strengths and they capi-
talize on them.”
Longtime Head Coach Dean
Schwirtz, who handed the
reins over to Odegaard this
season, said it was nice to see
their off-season efforts pay
off.
“I just think it’s sort of a re-
ward for the hard work and
time they put in during the
winter months,” said
Schwirtz, who added that it
wouldn’t have been possible
without the support of the sur-
rounding communities.
“We’re all one program, and
the reason why this happened
is because of a community
coming together and believing
in the sport of baseball,”
Schwirtz said.
Odegaard echoed his prede-
cessor’s sentiments and said,
“I’m really honored that I got
to coach these kids. They’re a
great group of guys, and par-
ents as well. I had a lot of fun
and hopefully I’ll get the
chance to do it next year.”
The 2014 Post 641 team ac-
complished what the 2012
team fell short of when it
made it to the region tourna-
ment only to finish third. Six
members of the 2012 team
were able to make up for that
with the 2014 squad, includ-
ing: Teddy Petersen, Cole Pe-
tersen, Lepel, Levi Vorlicek,
Carter Pinske and Colton
Lueders.
Post 641 5,
Wisconsin 1
Just as he had to start the
tournament, Cole Petersen dis-
played another solid pitching
performance, holding
Waupun, Wisc., to a single
third-inning run.
Meanwhile, Post 641’s of-
fense fired immediately when
Teddy Petersen scored on a
single by Lepel for a 1-0 lead
that expanded to 4-1 in the
third, which proved to be
Waupun’s most effective in-
ning offensively.
Vorlicek, Lepel and the
tournament MVP each scored
in the frame. Josh VonBerge
drove in the inning’s final run
on a sacrifice fly that proved
to be vital.
Teddy Petersen notched the
final run of the game in the
fourth as Waupun didn’t have
an answer for the speedy
shortstop.
Cole Petersen and Post
641’s defense shut down the
opposing offense for the re-
mainder of the game until
forming a celebratory pile
after the final out in the top of
the seventh.
Teddy Petersen went 3-3
and scored three runs.
Cole Petersen pitched all
seven innings and only al-
lowed three hits while walking
and beaning one batter.
Wisconsin 3,
Post 641 2
The first championship
game went to Waupun, despite
Teddy Petersen’s single and
scored run on another Lepel
double in the first.
Bennett Bielke kept the vis-
itors off the board until the
third when he walked the lead
off and gave up a pair of sin-
gles with one out, leaving the
game locked at 1-1.
Another lead-off batter
scored in the fourth for
Waupun, which stayed up 2-1
until the sixth, when it scored
once more for a 3-1 lead.
Vorlicek scored in the bot-
tom of the sixth, putting pres-
sure on Waupun heading into
the final frame, but Post 641
fell short despite a lead-off
single.
Each team had eight hits a
piece, but Bielke and Alex Ro-
mano combined for six walks,
which proved to be costly.
Post 641 3,
Wisconsin 2
The first meeting between
these two teams was Saturday,
and only lasted five innings
due to weather.
Luckily, Tanner Grack was
on target for all five innings
and held Waupun to just two
runs on four hits, despite
walking five batters. He fin-
ished with six strikeouts.
The Wisconsin team went
up 1-0 in the first, and scored
one more run in the third.
Plato had been chipping
away at the Waupun defense,
and left three runners stranded
through the first two frames
before striking with three runs
in the third from Teddy Pe-
tersen, Bielke and Vorlicek.
Grack retired Waupun 1-2-3
in the fourth and made it out
of the fifth unscathed before
the game was called.
Bielke had a single, a walk,
and one run scored.
Post 641 14,
Kansas 4
Fort Scott, Kans., didn’t
have much of an answer for
the Plato offense, despite win-
ning its opening round game
against Nevada.
Teddy Petersen gave Post
641 a 1-0 first-inning lead
after singling and stealing sec-
ond before crossing home.
Mitchell Pinske had Fort
Scott crossed up while starting
for Post 641, and cruised until
Lepel had to replace him to-
ward the end of the game.
Kansas trailed 7-3 after the
fourth, but Plato scored seven
runs over the next two in-
nings, ending the game 14-4
after the sixth.
Every player scored at least
one run, except Lepel.
Teddy Petersen went 3-5
with four runs scored and as
many stolen bases. Carter
Pinske went 3-4 with three
singles and notched three runs
for Plato.
Post 641 4,
South Dakota 1
Post 641 waited until the
third inning to finally score
against Madison, S.D., with
Teddy Petersen and Vorlicek
putting Plato up 2-0.
Cole Petersen gave South
Dakota a taste of what Min-
nesota lefties are all about,
striking out eight over seven
innings and allowing only one
sixth-inning run to score and
three hits total in the opening
round of the tournament.
Madison was sat down 1-2-
3 through the first three in-
nings before recording its first
hit of the game in the fourth.
Reed Wawrzyniak and
Mitchell Pinske added two in-
surance runs in the sixth, as
both walked to get on before
scoring on a double by Teddy
Petersen.
Mason Goettl went 2-4 with
two singles and a walk. Teddy
Petersen also went 2-4 with a
single, a double, and was
beaned in the third inning.

Wildcats vs. Bruins

Silver Lake 3rd, 4th graders undefeated
The Silver Lake summer recreation boys
third- and fourth-grade baseball team
went 15-0 this season. They worked hard
at practice weekly and according to their
coaches, it really showed on the field. In
the front, from left to right, are Sawyer
Kaczmarek, Will Wanous, Connor Sulli-
van, Shawn McHugh, Jake Schrupp and
Jacob Schermann. In the back, from left
to right, are Coach Jon Stifter, Jaxon An-
derson, Jackson Stifter, Mitchel
Jaskowiak, Max Davis, Owen Petersen,
Sawyer Ardolf and Coach Paul Davis. Not
pictured are Eli Yurek and Wyatt Baum-
garten.
The Wildcats knotted the
score at 1-1 with a run in the
top of the fourth. Joe Kley
drew a walk with one out.
Hallahan took down the next
batter swinging for the second
out, but then gave up a double
to Gregg Kohler that allowed
Joe Kley to score.
That tie held up until Joe
Kley’s winning homer in the
sixth.
The Bruins only managed
to get two runners on base
after the third inning, with
Taylor Schuette reaching on a
single in the fourth, and Chad
Genz singling in the eighth.
Genz reached second on a
sacrifice bunt by Deryk
Randt, but Tony Kley struck
out the next two batters to
leave him stranded.
Both Tony Kley and Halla-
han threw complete games,
with each pitcher allowing
five hits.
Tony Kley struck out 16
and walked none, while Halla-
han fanned 18 and walked
one. Each beaned one batter.
Grams had his double for
Brownton, while Bryant
Nordby, Schuette, Matt
Schwichtenberg and Genz
each contributed a single.
Joe Kley had two of Winst-
ed’s hits, including his game-
winning homer and a single in
the eighth. Kohler also had
two hits, a double and a sin-
gle, while Cullen Schultz had
a single.
Each team played errorless
defense.
— Although Brownton is
out of contention, three of its
pitchers have been drafted by
other state tournament con-
tenders. Hallahan was
snapped up by Waconia,
Grams was drafted by Green
Isle, and Dylan McCormick
was drafted by Plato.

Cole Petersen played a big part in Post 641’s first
ever regional championship, earning two victories in
both his starts against teams from South Dakota and
Wisconsin. He capped off his final season of Legion
ball by striking out eight batters over seven innings
and only allowed one run and three hits, effectively
shutting down Waupun, Wisc., for the 4-1 champi-
onship victory.
Submitted photo
The celebration began once the final out was notched
in the third meeting between Post 641 and Waupun,
Wisc., Sunday. Cole Petersen, center, was swarmed
by his infielders first, before the outfield and bench
piled on top of the lengthy lefty. Plato outscored its
opponents 28-11 over the four-day tourney, which re-
sulted in the region championship.

initely a little dead out there,”
said Manager Adam
Dammann. “We beat our-
selves this last game, 100 per-
cent. We were up 5-1 and we
let them back into this game.”
In both games, Plato estab-
lished an early lead, only to
relinquish it and fall behind at
the plate. Those early leads,
Dammann said, left his 21-6
Blue Jays “coasting” instead
of looking to finish.
“Coasting is never good,
and we did that today, ”
Dammann said. “We saw we
were up and we coasted
through, thinking we were
going to make it through.”
Adam Prehn worked the
mound for Plato against Green
Isle and was off to a shaky –
yet productive – start against
the Irish, keeping them hitless
for three innings. However,
the right-hander walked two,
beaned Brian Scherschligt,
and allowed Nate Pilacinski to
score on a passed ball, but not
before dislocating the short-
stop’s pinky finger. The Blue
Jay defense also gave up an
error while Prehn threw for al-
most four innings.
“I just walked too many
guys, then gave up a hit and
they got runs,” said Prehn on
his fourth-inning exit. “I prob-
ably should have mixed it up a
little bit and threw more off
speed instead of so many fast-
balls … I was throwing a lot
of pitches and I just couldn’t
get back into the groove. I
walked too many and then
they got a hit and opened the
floodgates.”
Both Dammann and Prehn
felt the team needs to put the
Region 7C tournament behind
them and focus on playing
Plato Blue Jay baseball.
They’ll get that opportunity
come Sunday at the Mini Met
in Jordan, when the Blue Jays
face off against Kimball, the
No. 2 seed from Region 11.
The winner advances to play
Fergus Falls on Sunday, Aug.
24, at 1:30 p.m. in Belle
Plaine.
Green Isle 9,
Blue Jays 6
Facing the Irish’s Pat Gul-
lickson for the third time this
season, Plato had its best of-
fensive showing of the series
Saturday as it took a 2-0 lead
after the first inning when
Tony Wischnack drove in
Nick Johnson and Matt Ode-
gaard with a two-out double
down the left-field line.
Green Isle responded with
one run in the bottom of the
inning when Nate Pilacinski
scored on a passed ball, but
the shortstop dislocated his
left pinky finger on Prehn dur-
ing the play at the plate. Pi-
lacinski didn’t miss any time,
as his finger supposedly acci-
dentally went back into place
while he was taking his jersey
off to come out of the game so
it could be inspected.
Kyle Panning led off the
second with a right-field dou-
ble before scoring on a double
by Prehn two batters later as
Gullickson began to fall apart.
Nick Johnson hit a blooper
single behind Prehn, and
Chris Odegaard drew a walk
from Gullickson, who was
then replaced by Mac Zachow.
Zachow immediately surren-
dered a single to Matt Ode-
gaard that scored Johnson and
Prehn before he and his broth-
er were left stranded at in-
ning’s end with a 5-1 lead in-
tact. That’s when the Blue
Jays started coasting, and the
Irish fired up with a little help
from some hecklers who were
riding Green Isle’s Zach Herd
for the entire game until board
members had a discussion
with the gentlemen.
The Irish did the majority of
their damage in the fourth in-
ning with two outs as Prehn
began to fade.
With the bases loaded and
two down, Herd ripped a shot
to left-center field for a three-
RBI double before scoring on
Pilacinski’s single, prompting
a few choice words from Herd
toward his adoring fans.
Prehn gave up two more
doubles and a walk before
getting the hook for Jacob
Bratsch, who promptly got
Chris Knoll to pop out to Matt
Odegaard at short.
Zachow was on auto-pilot
through the remainder of the
game, retiring the Blue Jays in
order in every inning except
for the seventh and ninth –
where Plato managed to score
one, but not enough – and lost
9-6.
Offensively, it was no sur-
prise that Plato was led by
Matt Odegaard, who went 3-4
– all singles – with two RBIs,
a run scored and a walk. John-
son went 2-4 and scored three
runs.
Prehn took the loss, pitch-
ing 3.67 innings while allow-
ing six earned runs on six hits.
He struck out four, walked
three and beaned one.

Nate Pilacinski showed his teammates the result of
his slide into home on a passed ball in the first inning
Saturday in Brownton. His dislocated pinky suppos-
edly went back into place while the shortstop was re-
moving his jersey. He returned to action immediately,
and played a pivotal role in the Irish’s 9-6 victory over
Plato.

The Plato Blue Jays held an in-game
meeting while Green Isle’s Mac Zachow
was warming up to take over for starter
Pat Gullickson in the second inning of
Saturday’s game. Zachow ended up sur-
rendering a single to Matt Odegaard,
which scored two runs, before blanking
Plato over the next six innings.

The Devil’s Playground
I
n our society today, we often get comfortable and complacent. We become content with how things have al-
ways been. We stop looking around for opportunities and become rather inward focused. That my friends, is
the Devil’s playground.
In recent days, we have seen tragedies unfolding around our country and world. But, that’s over there. That’s
their problem. We engage with the horrific realities only insofar as it is convenient for us. It’s on our time and in
our ways. Again, that’s the Devil’s playground.
Today, as we pause to think about God’s place in all this, let us not forget that God lives in and through us.
He has equipped us to rally against the Devil’s playground. To challenge the norms, to change the status quo,
and to keep our eyes and hearts open to His bidding.
We’ve been in the midst of Vacation Bible School at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church this week. It has been
great. Maybe we could utilize the word “awesome” here. The crazy part for us has been to see how many chil-
dren have been attending that have no church home. That haven’t really heard the Good News. That may not un-
derstand God’s love and care for them. In our busyness as people, we just assume that people will find the
church if they really want to… but, sometimes, we have to get out there and not leave room for the Devil’s play-
ground.
Let me offer this consideration for the week. How might God be calling you “To love one another” (1 John
4:7)? Summer is almost over, but people are still out and about in town. The county fair is this week. There are
ample opportunities to kick the Devil to the curb and reinvest in living out the mission of the Church by the
power of the Spirit.
This weekly message is contributed by the following concerned citizens and businesses who
urge you to attend the church of your choice. To be added to this page, contact us at 320-864-5518.

the original contracted work.
John Rodeberg of SEH presented
the update on the preliminary results
providing an east outlet from the cen-
tral detention ponds at 20
th
Street and
around the High School. The prelimi-
nary analysis focused around four
critical issues: Confirmation of the
drainage areas, match flooding that
occurred to the contour information
available for the area, determine if
upstream road crossings impact the
flood timing and answer the ques-
tion; Will an outlet to the east pro-
vide a positive cost to benefit ratio?
Thus far it was determined that an
outlet to the east would be beneficial.
Preliminary cost analysis is deter-
mined to be from $500,000 to
$1,500,000 depending on several fac-
tors.
Next steps include confirming di-
rection by obtaining more detailed
information, refining drainage model,
meeting with entities involved –
Townships, County, BCWD, and re-
fine costs/benefit analysis. There
will be an on-going discussion con-
cerning this public improvement in-
frastructure.
The Open House is scheduled for

tified by letter and notices also pub-
lished in the paper. All affected are

presentation.
John Rodeberg presented informa-
tion as gathered by Arborist Mark

third complete and his findings re-
vealed that there are 360 trees total of
15 species. Tree condition is very
good – four of 117 inventoried will
need to be removed. The hope is to
minimize removal or damage to ex-
isting trees during the 2015 Improve-
ment project in the Lincoln Park
Area. Further updates will be provid-

The McLeod County Sher-
iff’s Office is warning resi-
dents of a mail scam.
Residents may receive mail
telling them that “You are the
lucky winner of $750,000 in
Lottery 7,” and are sent by
mail a debit card with a cer-
tain amount of credit on it.
Recipients are asked to cash
the debit card and then send
the cash in the form of a
check to another individual in
another state. Recipients then
receive another letter with an-
other check advising that they
will receive a package by
mail by UPS.
This is a scam, the sheriff’s
office stated, and advised res-
idents to not cash the check
or debit card.

2014
The Plato Blue Jays will look to
do better than last year’s state
tournament team when it
squares off with Kimball in the
opening round of the Class C
state tournament this weekend.
The 2013 squad was ousted in
its first game against the New
Prague Orioles after winning the
Region 7C championship. Man-
ager Adam Dammann, right cen-
ter, hopes his team will go fur-
ther this year. Tony Wischnack,
right, will be counted on heavily
if the Blue Jays are to make a
run.
Tyler Lang, left, and Tony Beringer shared a laugh
while putting their playoff mustaches on display be-
fore a Region 7C game. Below, Nick Johnson con-
nects with a pitch before going on to steal second.
