GSL fall teams getting ready
P
Colin Kerslake (boys’ soccer) is the lone new GSL fall-season head coach. Kerslake replaces Jeff Jenson, who resigned the post after 2011. Panther openers were scheduled to begin Tuesday morning, Aug. 21, with tennis matches against Jordan and Sibley East. There is more tennis Thursday morning, as well as the girls’ soccer team’s 1 p.m. opener with Willmar at Stevens Seminary Stadium. The final GSL team to open is the football squad, which plays host to Holy Family Catholic on Friday, Aug. 31 — 7 p.m. opening kickoff. Previews for five GSL fall teams — boys’ cross country, girls’ cross country, boys’ soccer, girls’ soccerr and girls’ tennis – appear on this week’s sports pages. The Chronicle plans to preview GSL’s football and volleyball teams next week.

BOYS’ CROSS COUNTRY
2011 in Review — GSL’s boys placed fourth in the Wright County Conference; then took third in Section 4 (Class A). Last year’s team won invitationals at Waconia, Dassel-Cokato and Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted. Jake Burr, a senior in 2011, was the team’s lone qualifier for the state meet. Burr earned a spot on the Class A all-state team by placing 18th at the big run in Northfield. Graduation Hit — Losing Burr (3rd WCC, 3rd Section 4) is a big loss. Three other seniors ran at sections; none cracking the top 40, however. Who Returns — Academic all-stater Jalen Metcalf, now a senior, placed 10th to earn an AllWCC medal last fall. Brandon Richter, then a fantastic freshman, received honorable mention. Metcalf (14th), current junior James Tichy (31st) and Richter (32nd) posted GSL’s second, third and fourth scores at last year’s section meet. The Panthers have back five of their top six scores
Only 48 boys (gr. 10-12) are out for GSL football
Glencoe-Silver Lake football coaches welcomed 48 boys, grades 10-12, to the start of practices Monday morning, Aug. 13. That number is down six boys from the opening of practices a year ago. And it is way down from the 72 boys (15 seniors, 27 juniors, 30 sophomores) who reported to practice in August 2007. Those 2007 Panthers, you may recall, trounced DeLaSalle, 56-20, in Prep Bowl XXVI to cap off a 14-0 season. Numbers aside, head coach Scott Tschimperle said the 2012 Panthers had a “great first week,” undoubtedly assisted by weather that seemed more suited for late September than mid-August. GSL returns most of its goodhands people. Graduation, however, made a heavy hit up front, particularly with the defensive line. Reed Dunbar and Brandon Ebert are a pair of two-year starters at the offensive ends. Tschimperle & Co. are looking for a third quality player at those spots, freeing Dunbar to jump platoons and become a defensive end. In addition, Tschimperle said four boys — juniors Tyler Donnay, Zach Jones and Nolan Lepel, plus 12th-grader Eric Thalmann — are competing for the two guard spots on the offensive line. Donnay also is a candidate for a defensive tackle post — if he’s not needed by the offense. Fans are invited to get their first good look at the 2012 Panthers at GSL’s anual four-team scrimmage, Saturday morning, Aug. 25. starting at 9:30 a.m. *** Plays is under way in St. Cloud at the Class C state amateur baseball tournament, where four Crow River Valley League teams qualified and only Young America failed to survive the first round. Nick Litfin had three hits and scored three runs and Chris Bullis tossed a six-hitter in Waconia’s 6-1 win over Stark on Aug. 17. The next day, Scott Theisen was 5-for-5 with two RBIs in Winsted’s 8-5 victory over Jackson. Region 7 champion Green Isle drew a firstround bye.

GIRLS’ SOCCER
2011 in Review — After backto-back winless seasons in 2009 and 2010, GSL’s girls won two matches last fall. Goals against were cut nearly in half (from 110 in 2010 to 57). Playing without a bench, 11 Panthers played secondseeded New Ulm to a scoreless tie for the first 60 minutes of the teams’ Section 2 (Class A) openinground clash — a match New Ulm would eventually win, 4-0. That left GSL with a 2-14 season record. Graduation Hit — Brianna Tesch. That’s it. Who Returns — 10 starters, including All-Wright County Conference defense midfielder Mercy Rakow and honorable-mention recipients Kaitlyn Cohrs, a forward; 11th-grader Yodee Rivera, a striker; and goalie Brianna Elsing. Other starters back: seniors Taylor Breidenbach, Alex Brusven and Courtney Neubarth; sophomores Yocelin Lopez and Keisha Prafke, and eighth-grader Kenzie Boozikee. Numbers — Much improved. Since the season-ending loss to New Ulm, 13 girls have been added to head coach Zach Otto-Fisher’s roster. Currently, GSL has 6 seniors, 3 juniors, 5 sophomores, 6 ninth-graders, 10 eighth-graders, and 6 seventh-graders. With 36 girls, Otto-Fisher hopes to field three teams — one junior high team for Debbie Moosbrugger, one JV for Gary Carter and a varsity for himself. Who to Beat in WCC — Holy Family Catholic, Waconia and Orono should field teams of a high quality. GSL Outlook — Otto-Fisher said this team put in a lot of work over the summer — including club matches and captains’ practices. He

GIRLS’ TENNIS
2011 in Review — A senior-laden GSL roster produced a 3-3 record in Wright County Conference duals; won a Hutchinson Invitational title for a second straight year, and lost (4-3) to eventual champion Providence Academy in the semifinals of the Section 5 (Class A) team tournament. All-WCC seniors Mary Arnold and Jackie Stifter played as a doubles pair in their second straight state meet; and as before, won their first match and dropped their second. Graduation Hit — Huge. Over a five-year span, the nine graduates accounted for 408 individual match wins. But as good as they were on the court, they were even better in the classroom. Five were academic all-staters. As a group, the 2011 team showed a GPA above 3.84. Who Returns — Junior Kelly Arnold and seniors Michaela Boesche and Kelly Beneke are long in varsity experience. Sophomore Callie Raduenz got several good tastes last fall, while junior Laura Becker and sophomore Rachel Rusten managed enough to earn letters. Numbers — Down from recent years. Currently, GSL’s roster includes 2 seniors, 6 juniors, 11 sophomores, and one ninth-grader. Also, 10 in grades 7-8. Who to Beat in WCC — Delano continues to look like the conference power, with Orono, Annandale and Mound-Westonka hoping to challenge. GSL Outlook — For starters, head coach Robb DeCorsey (20th season) is looking for a new lineup. “It’s been basically the same team for the last three years,” he says, noting the fun he hopes to have watching a different team grow as tennis players. *** Josh Otto-Fisher will be DeCorsey’s top assistant again, with Kelly Mackendanz taking over in the junior high.

GIRLS’ CROSS COUNTRY
2011 in Review — GSL’s girls ran sixth fastest in the Wright County Conference, and also placed sixth in Section 4 (Class A). Tori Burr, a sophomore in 2011, was the team’s lone qualifier for the state meet. Burr placed 32nd on the St. Olaf College course in November. Graduation Hit — Light. From its section lineup, GSL loses only its sixth and seventh runners. Who Returns — Seven letterwinners, including Burr, a three-time member of All-WCC teams, and fellow junior Kaylee Venier, twice All-WCC and once honorable mention. A year ago, Burr placed second at the WCC meet and fourth in Section 4; Venier was 15th and 24th. Also returning from last year’s section team are seniors Jenna Haag (39th overall) and Kaitlyn Boesche (40th), plus junior Mary Roach (53rd). Ninth-grader Hannah Yurek and sophomore Taylor Venier won letters a year ago, too. Keep an eye on junior Jenny Illg, a rising track athlete running

Kroells is named to Minnesota Lions Vision Foundation board
Diana Kroells of Hamburg was recently named to serve on the board of directors of the Minnesota Lions Vision Foundation. Kroells, vice president of operations for the State Bank of Hamburg, is an active member of the Hamburg Lions Club and well-deserving of this appointment. Lions Clubs International is a service organization known for assisting the blind and hearing impaired. As a Minnesota Lions Vision Foundation board member, Kroells will oversee Lions funding for the Minnesota Lions Eye Bank; report on eye bank activities to the Lions of Minnesota; and promote the eye bank to fellow Lions club members and the general public. The eye bank, which recovers and distributes donated eye tissue for use in sight-saving corneal transplants, teaching and research, is part of the University of Minnesota’s Department of Ophthalmology. Since 1960, the Minnesota Lions Eye Bank has provided more than 25,000 corneas for transplant. Kroells also will work to raise funds for other Minnesota Lions Vision Foundation initiatives, such as the Lions Children’s Eye Clinic, the Lions Macular Degeneration Center, used eyeglass collection, and the Fund to Prevent Blindness in Infants and Children. Minnesota Lions have now donated more than $18 million to the people of Minnesota through sight-related endeavors at the University of Minnesota and elsewhere. Kroells will be busy in the upcoming year. In addition to her board duties and banking work, she serves as clerk of Washington Lake Township, is on the Region 1 Board of the Council of Catholic Women, and is a member of the St. Brendan’s Church Green Isle Parish Council. She also enjoys spending time flower gardening, reading, and taking care of her nine grandchildren.

BOYS’ SOCCER
2011 in Review — A veteran team of Panthers went 7-5-2 during the regular season; then defeated St. Peter, 4-0, in the first round of the Section 2 (Class A) tournament. GSL’s season ended after a 2-1 overtime loss at Mankato East. Graduation Hit — Very heavy. Gone are AllWright County Conference midfielder Tanner Schafer and All-WCC defender Daniel Streeter. In addition, GSL loses five boys who received honorable mention on the all-conference team — four to graduation. At least three others have not returned to the practice field. Who Returns — Senior captains Nick Jenkins, Javier Calva, Joe Fehrenbach and Parker Kerslake teams. Additional players are expected from Sibley East, with whom a cooperative agreement continues in 2012. Who to Beat in WCC — Waconia (9-1 WCC, 15-3-2 overall) should be strong again. GSL Outlook — “It’s all going to be about team,” says Kerslake, who has coached high school hockey before, but not high school soccer. He says the Panthers will field a young team; one he expects will compete. “I’m looking forward to it,” he says. *** Randy Wilson will assist Kerslake. Gary Carter coaches the JV.

predicts that down the trail, people will look back at the current seniors and credit them with changing the direction of girls’ soccer at GSL. “I told the girls, ‘We better be sitting at .500 by the end of the season,’” Otto-Fisher said, noting his desire for a firstround home match in this year’s section tourney.

cross country for the first time. Numbers — Not much depth. Only 2 seniors, 5 juniors, 6 sophomores, 2 ninthgraders, 3 eighth-graders and 2 seventh-graders. Who to Beat in WCC — Last year’s run-away champion, Annandale, remains powerful. Waconia, third in 2011, looks to be deeper and improved. GSL Outlook — Head coach Jeff Delwiche thinks two all-conference awards and three honorable mentions are possible. Five decorated runners might get a top 3 team standing in the WCC. *** GSL’s coaches also include Jann Savre, Josh Metcalf, Hank Larsen and Chris Bick.

from last year’s WCC meet in Metcalf, Richter, Jac Chelman (now grade 10), Kyle Polzin (12) and Tyler Zajicek (12). Garrett Ober also lettered a year ago. He and fellow sophomores like Isiah Herout and Oakley Clark are vying for spots in the varsity lineup, too. Numbers — While not great, depth looks pretty good for the next three years. Currently, GSL has 6 seniors, 5 juniors, 8 sophomores, 4 ninth-graders, 2 eighthgraders and 4 seventhgraders. Senior Tanner Konnen is running cross country for the first time. Who to Beat in WCC — Champion Orono and runnerup Mound-Westonka dominated the 2011 conference meet, and it would not be a surprise if they do so again in 2012. GSL Outlook — “We have the potential to have a great fall (season),” head coach Jeff Delwiche says.
