S
Panthers win opener
By Tom Carothers
Sports Editor
With a 20-6 defeat of New
London-Spicer on Saturday,
Aug. 22, the Glencoe-Silver
Lake football team not only
opened the 2015 season with a
victory, it also gained a meas-
ure of revenge for a 13-12 loss
to the Wildcats in the 2014
Class AAA State Tournament
semifinals.
“We don’t reflect on the
past,” coach Scott Tschimper-
le said of the win in relation to
last year’s state tournament
defeat. “We have a lot of re-
spect for New London-Spicer
and our kids were confident
that we could win that game.”
Both teams looked quite a
bit different than they did last
November on a frosty field at
Eden Prairie High School.
While Saturday’s weather was
reminiscent more of late Sep-
tember or October with slate
gray windswept skies and in-
termittent rain, the Panthers
made it a sunny outcome for
the visiting side.
Safety/multi-back Teddy
Petersen got the afternoon off
to a rollicking start by inter-
cepting a NL-S pass on the
first play of the game to set
the Panthers up at the Wild-
cats’ 9-yard line.
While GSL turned the ball
away on a fumble three plays
later, the tone was set for the
day with the visitors establish-
ing an early upper hand.
“There were some first-
game jitters,” Tschimperle
said. “We played better as the
game went on.”
It was not until the opening
play of the second quarter that
the scoreless deadlock was
broken.
On fourth-and-goal from
the NL-S 3-yard line, Petersen
took a handoff from quarter-
back Luke Frahm and lofted a
touchdown pass to halfback
Carsen Streich to make the
score 6-0.
The Wildcats responded in
kind, marching down the field
to knot the score at 6-6 with
just over nine minutes until
halftime. As it had with GSL,
the NL-S extra-point kick
went wayward as the wind
swirled around the stadium.
The Panthers ground game
was in good form just a hand-
ful of possessions into the
contest, with GSL charging
hard up the sod in gobbling up
both yardage and clock.
Fullback Nathan Schuch
made his defining run of the
day midway through the sec-
ond quarter, a 43-yard rumble
that figured mightily in his
total of 152 yards on the day.
Despite the Panthers’
ground-gaining exploits, the
score remained 6-6 into half-
time.
NL-S opened the second
half by recovering a GSL
fumble and driving the ball to
the precipice of the end zone
less than four minutes into the
third quarter.
However, with the hosts
poised to take the lead, line-
backer Tristan Weber and Pe-
tersen forced a goal line fum-
ble that was scooped up by

While this is unlikely to be the official team photo,
the Glencoe-Silver Lake girls soccer team commem-
orated its final “Flashy Friday” before the season
begins with an impromptu squad shot after practice
on Aug. 21. Head coach Zach Otto-Fisher had the
honors of holding the selfie stick and snapping the
photo. The Panthers begin their 2015 campaign on
Monday, Aug. 31 at Spectrum in Elk River.

Teddy Petersen picked off a New Lon-
don-Spicer pass on the first play of the
game to help set the Glencoe-Silver
Lake football team on course to a 20-6
season-opening victory on Saturday,
Aug. 22 in New London. Petersen also
threw a touchdown pass and caught a
two-point conversion throw in the win.
Names change, but
goals stay the same
for GSL footballers
By Tom Carothers
Sports Editor
Turnovers are to be avoided
in football, but roster turnover
in high school football are un-
avoidable.
While the Glencoe-Silver
Lake football team contends
with the loss of several key
contributors from back-to-
back state participating
squads, the goal for this au-
tumn’s edition of Panthers
football remains the same.
“The goal is always to re-
turn to state and go to the Prep
Bowl,” coach Scott Tschim-
perle said.
GSL was a state quarterfi-
nalist in 2013 and a state
semi-finalist last year. After
coming within one step – one
point – of playing in the Class
AAA state championship, this
autumn the Panthers want to
roar into TCF Bank Stadium
this November and play for a
title.
“Our seniors want to go one
step further (than 2014), but it
is a long process,” Tschimper-
le said. “We just focus on next
Friday’s game.”
On offense, the return of
senior All-State multi-back
Teddy Petersen helps offset
the loss of four-year starting
quarterback Keaton Anderson,
one of eight graduates from
last year.
Junior Luke Frahm received
first crack at replacing Ander-
son under center in a season-
opening win at New London-
Spicer.
“It’s a learning process for
Luke, but he was great on JV
last year,” Tschimperle said.
“He has athletic ability and a
moxie to make things happen
when a play breaks down.”
Petersen, listed as a quarter-
back on the opening day ros-
ter, is a multi-faceted offen-
sive threat both on the ground
and through the air, wherever
he lines up from game-to-
game.
“Teddy is dealing with a
sore hip flexor and we used
him more than we wanted to
in the opener,” Tschimperle
said. “He’s a tough kid and we
hope to have him back at full
speed soon.”
The team’s offensive line is
rebuilding with guard Alex
Romano and tackle Matt Di-
etel returning on the left side.
Junior fullback Nathan
Schuch and sophomore half-
back Carson Streich played
big roles in the offensive

turn to the state tournament once again this autumn.

It is a situation that Robb
DeCorsey has not had to deal
with very often in his 22 years
as Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’
tennis coach.
The Panthers varsity squad
enters the autumn season al-
most entirely brand new, with
only one returning player –
senior Lindsay Wedin – from
last year’s roster.
“We are very new and very
young after losing nine of our
top 10 from last year,”
DeCorsey said. “For the past
six years we’ve had a lot of
the same girls and only had to
replace a couple at a time, but
this year it’s a major change.”
Wedin, who played mostly
third singles or first doubles
last season, is now being
counted on to lead the fresh-
faced squad. She said that de-
spite the overhaul, the team is
in good shape.
“I think we’re looking
good,” she said. “A lot of
these young players are look-
ing strong.”
Wedin counts either an all-
conference or all-conference
honorable mention finish
among her individual goals
and a respectable showing at
sections among her team
goals.
DeCorsey shares her
thoughts on the team ideal.
“If we could pull out a win
in the section tournament, that
would be huge,” he said. “For
us this season, success will
not be looking at record.
We’re looking at individual
improvements this year. I’d
like to be able to get a singles
player or doubles team into
the second day of sections.”
Competing in a strong
Wright County Conference
will be difficult this season,
DeCorsey notes. A roster that
features just one other senior
– Peyton Lilienthal – four jun-
iors and seven sophomores
means that the roster will be
in flux all season long.
“There’s going to be multi-
ple lineups,” DeCorsey said.
“We are going to try to pluck
points wherever we can.
“Our numbers are up a bit,
and we have some girls that
are new to the team. This sea-
son is a platform for us to start
building again and the girls
are working hard.”

Girls’ soccer team looks for continued improvement
By Tom Carothers
Sports Editor
With just 10 wins to its
name this decade, the Glen-
coe-Silver Lake girls’ soccer
team is far from a power-
house, but the squad contin-
ues to trend upward as its
participating numbers keep
growing.
“We are at 43 girls in the
program this year,” coach
Zach Otto-Fisher said. “We
have new kids coming out
from a number of classes to
play soccer and the interest
is definitely growing.”
The program’s number
count is as high as it has
been as Otto-Fisher enters
his fifth season at the helm,
with 17 girls participating in
varsity practice as of last
week.
“It’s a young and small
program,” he said. “We are
determining who will play
what roles and will utilize a
lot of experimental strate-
gies.”
The squad was dealt a
heavy loss long before its
first game this autumn as
goalkeeper Zoe Christensen
was lost for the year due to
surgery on July 24 to repair
a torn ACL suffered while
playing club soccer last
spring.
“It’s a tough loss on the
field, but she’s still very in-
volved with the team,” Otto-
Fisher said. “It’s like having
another coach out here.”
Destiny Exsted, who was
the Panthers’ junior varsity
goaltender as an eighth-
grader in 2014, gets first
crack at replacing Chris-
tensen in the nets. Otto-Fish-
er figures Macy Rhodes and
Hattie Dreier will also see
time in goal this season.
GSL returns talent up
front as Emily Thalmann,
the team’s leading scorer in
2014, is back. However,
Otto-Fisher figures she will
move back to a midfield po-
sition from forward, joining
Jordan Breidenbach in order
to help direct on-field play.
The Panthers return three
sophomores to anchor the
defense, with Aubrey Geisen
joining a pair of Paiges –
Anderson and Litzau – in
the backfield.
GSL won four games in
2012, one in 2014 and three
last season. What the win
total in 2015 will be is un-
known, but Otto-Fisher said
success will be measured in
improvement, whatever the
final record says.
“We want our seniors to
believe they did their best
and left the program contin-
uing to head in the right di-
rection,” he said.
GSL’s home opener is
Tuesday, Sept. 1 against
Worthington.

defensive tackle Peyton Sell for a touchback.
“That was a very pivotal point in the game,”
Tschimperle said. “We could’ve been down
there. Our defense had to rise up and make a
play and they did.”
The Panthers took full advantage of their
good fortune, marching 80 yards for the go-
ahead score, a 24-yard touchdown pass from
Frahm to Streich that made the score 14-6 after
a two-point conversion run by Petersen.
It was the first varsity touchdown pass for
Frahm and the second varsity touchdown both
overall, and in the contest for Streich.
“I had a lot of fun out there,” Streich said. “I
had a good pass thrown to me and got some
good blocking.”
With GSL now in command of the game,
Streich struck again late in the third quarter.
His 2-yard surge into the end zone brought the
score to its eventual final count of 20-6, sealing
victory for the Panthers.
The GSL defense allowed NL-S 1164 yards
of total offense in addition to the lone score.
Defensive back Jacob VonBerge recorded
1.5 sacks in the game, with linebacker
Cameron Chap claiming one sack and defen-
sive end Jacob Popelka posting one-half sack.
Offensively, the Panthers gained 275 total
yards, led by Schuch’s game-changing 152-
yard, 7.2 yards-per-carry effort. Petersen
rushed for 45 yards on 14 carries, while Frahm
rushed 13 times for 19 yards.
Frahm’s 24-yard touchdown strike was one
of two passes he completed on four attempts.
Streich’s touchdown grab made him the team’s
leading receiver with 27 yards on two recep-
tions.
Next up for GSL is neighboring rival
Hutchinson, who host the Panthers in the annu-
al “Tackle Cancer” game at 7 p.m. Friday
night. The Tigers are coming off a 41-14 open-
ing loss at Becker last Saturday.
“It’s a rivalry game for us,” Tschimperle
said. “We always look forward to playing
Hutch.”

Bread of life
“Jesus declared, ‘I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who
believes in Me will never be thirsty.’” — John 6:35
J
esus has just fed 5,000 men and probably many others who were with them in the area of Tiberias. When
He departs for Capernaum, the crowd follows. After all, this is a good deal! We can sense their excitement
as they feel the beginning of a new time when their meager lives would be enriched with daily bread
given to them by their new king! Nothing can be greater than this, right?
Most of us aren’t asking for the world and don’t expect to win the lottery. But our life experience is confined
to limits imposed by life and death. So we are cautious about throwing our lot in with someone who claims to
be “the bread of life.” We can taste the food on our table, even if it is only crackers and cheese. How can we let
go and trust Jesus to provide for all our needs, heavenly and earthly?
Jesus tells us that if we will let go of our picnic basket of goodies we will have a much greater feast in store.
Still, we take along our sandwiches in case the great wedding reception fizzles. Finally, Jesus meets us at the
door with the wedding garment of salvation, and we know that we have to drop everything we are carrying to
put it on. And, miraculously, we do! And we realize the Bread of Life is more than enough to meet all of our
needs.

Gloria Hilgers representing the
Glencoe Historic Preservation Socie-
ty gave a brief history of Fort
Skedaddle built during the Sioux In-
dian Uprising in 1862 at corner of
current Baxter Avenue and 15
th
Street
location.
They would like to have city staff
prepare the site for the marker place-
ment and relocate the fort plaque to
be placed on a rock they have select-
ed to the site at Baxter and 15
th
.
Motion by Councilor Perschau
motioned to have city staff prepare
the site and move in the rock selected
for the Fort Skedaddle historic mark-
er placement at Baxter Avenue and
15
th
Street. Councilor Dietz seconded
the motion. All members voted in
favor.
Fire Relief Association members
Steve Millard and James Voigt pre-
sented a recent actuarial study to the
council. The Association is request-
ing an increase in the lump sum re-
tirement amount from $2300 to
$2500 per year of service and the
City annual contribution would re-
main at $68,795.00.
The Relief Association is now
106% funded leading to a discussion
regarding the city duration to contin-
ue to fund. Further discussion is to
take place concerning a goal to be
reached by the Relief Association be-
fore city discontinues the annual con-
tribution.
Councilor Schrupp motioned with
Councilor Ziemer making a second
to the motion to approve the annual
contribution of $68,795 and increase
the lump sum retirement amount to
$2500 per year of service. All mem-
bers voted in favor.
Chris Henjum, Flaherty & Hood
reviewed legislative action affecting
Greater Minnesota cities. Outcome of
the session resulted in no funding for
increase in LGA due to Legislature’s
failure to pass a tax bill, $1.8 M for
new employer-driven job training
program, $5.3 M for workforce hous-
ing, $10.8 M for the broadband infra-
structure grant program, $12.5 M for
small city streets, $4.3M for Greater
Minnesota BDPI program and pass-
ing of a law requiring state to per-
form a cost impact analysis of all
new an proposed water quality regu-
lations.
Scott Qualle of MN Spect, Inc re-
viewed the self-perpetuating ordi-
nance adopting the Minnesota State
Building Code. This ordinance is rec-
ommended to adopt the current and
valid building code.
Questions and discussion led to a
motion by Councilor Ziemer approv-
ing the first reading of Ordinance No.
589 a Self-Perpetuating ordinance
adopting the Minnesota State Build-
ing Code. Councilor Perschau sec-
onded the motion. Members voting
in favor-Schrupp, Dietz, Ziemer and
Perschau. Member Robeck voted no.
Motion carried.
Moving in manufactured homes
code requirements was questioned
and discussed resulting in a need to
clarify with the State what City can
enforce and what ordinance language
changes need to be made to address
issues.
Planning Commission recom-
mended unanimously that the Coun-
cil send a letter to the County Com-
missioners to move the recycling
containers from the downtown area
to a more aestheitcally pleasing area
on County property. They are
adamant about the containers being
moved due to trash blowing around
and unto residential properties. The
city code does state that the City Ad-
ministrator has the authority to desig-
nate where the containers are to be
located.
Councilor Ziemer motioned to
draft a letter and have the Mayor and
Council members sign stating that
the recycling containers are to be
moved from the downtown area.
Councilor Schrupp seconded the mo-
tion. All members voted in favor.
City Attorney Jody Winters pre-
sented a draft of an ordinance in-
creasing the Mayor and Council
Members monthly compensation.
Council members have been at their
current rate of pay since 2003 and the
Mayor since 1995.
If ordinance approved it would
take effect after the 2016 election.
Discussion led to motion by
Councilor Schrupp and second by
Councilor Dietz to discuss further at
the August Finance Committee Meet-
ing on the 26
th
at 4:00 p.m. Members
Schrupp, Dietz, Ziemer and Perschau
voted in favor. Member Robeck
voted no. Motion carried.
Discussion held with event center
staff, police department and bar man-
ager has led to recommendation for
the City to assume the bar operation
for all future events at the Glencoe
City Center. This will allow for a
greater employee presence at the
events for issues that arise at the
events. Also needed is the purchase
of a point of sale cash register for the
City Center Bar to tie in the invento-
ry and products used to the point of
sale system at Glencoe Wine and
Spirits.
Discussion resulted in concerns
about how the liability is affected.
Motion and second by Ziemer and
Schrupp to have City provide exclu-
sive bar operations at events in the
City Center and to purchase the cash
register. All members voted in favor.
City Administrator Mark Larson
reviewed a very preliminary 2016
General Fund Budget and Levy. Fi-
nance Committee will meet August
26
th
to review further.
Discussion was held concerning
weeds and tall grass on 13
th
Street
West which is State right-of-way
property.
Councilor Schrupp then motioned
to have the City mow from Fir Av-
enue to Armstrong Avenue. Coun-
cilor Robeck seconded. All members
voted in favor.
Furniture left on boulevards for

School Board
Independent School District
No. 2859
Glencoe-Silver Lake, Minnesota
NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING
REGARDING THE CLOSING
OF THE HELEN BAKER
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
BUILDING
1. NOTICE IS HEREBY GIV EN,
that, as required by law, the School
Board of Independent School District
No. 2859, Glencoe-Silver Lake, Min-
nesota, will conduct a public hearing
regarding the necessity and practica-
bility of closing the Helen Baker Ele-
mentary School building.
2. The public hearing will be held
at 6:00 o'clock p.m. on September
14, 2015, in the Lincoln Meeting
Room (Room 124), 1621 East 16th
Street, Glencoe, Minnesota 55336.
3. The schoolhouse proposed to be
closed is located at 405 East 16th
Street, in the City of Glencoe, Coun-
ty of McLeod, State of Minnesota.
4. The reasons for the proposed
closing of the school building include
the following:
a. The School District will be ren-
ovating and bettering the Glencoe-
Silver Lake High School and Lin-
coln Junior High School campus
in order to relocate grades K-2
students who have been housed in
the Helen Baker school building
to a new and improved facility.
b. Continued use of this additional
site would burden the School Dis-
trict and could cause sig nificant fi-
nancial limitations. Attempts to re-
store the site would be cost pro-
hibitive and a poor use of Glen-
coe-Silver Lake School District
funds.
c. The School District has suf -
ficient capacities without the
Helen Baker site to accommodate
present and projected future stu-
dent enrollment.
5. Persons requesting to give tes ti -
mony for and against the proposed
closing shall be heard before the
School Board at the time and place
designated above.
