By Lee Ostrom Sports Editor Jalen Metcalf was the individual medalist, and four of his GSL teammates were close behind, as the Panther boys’ cross-country runners opened their season with a 21-point victory at NYA Central’s annual alumni meet Aug. 25 at Baylor Regional Park. Glencoe-Silver Lake, placing its five scoring runners among the top 12 overall finishers, earned a team tally of 30. Mayer Lutheran finished with 51 and host Central 54 in the three-team meet. In the girls’ division, Mayer Lutheran won with 35 points. GSL tallied 43 and Central 50. GSL coach Jeff Delwiche said each of his varsity boys improved his time from last year’s alumni meet, and in some cases significantly. As a team, GSL was faster by nearly 2 full minutes than last year’s top quintet, which included all-stater Jake Burr. Metcalf, an All-Wright County

Conference performer as a junior last year, finished Baylor Park’s 5-kilometer course in 17 minutes, 13.5 seconds. Delwiche said Metcalf ran “very relaxed.” GSL’s next three places — second, seventh and eighth overall — were notched by sophomores; namely, Brandon Richter (17:17.77), Isaiah Herouit (18:25.23) and Jac Chelman (18:38.81). At last year’s alumni meet, Richter was clocked in 20:19, Herout in 21:09, and Chelman in 21:15. “We’re really happy for the boys,” Delwiche said. Outside of GSL’s top five, there were other big jumps: Garrett Ober went from 23:48 in 2011 to 20:08.35 in 2012; Ryan Sprengeler from 24:02 to 20:51.08; and, taking the cake, Eric Kruschke from 33:18 to 21:43. The GSL girls did not display the same improvement. Among their top seven finishers, the only two who improved their

GSL volleyball has proven talent, but depth is young
By Lee Ostrom Sports Editor The GSL volleyball team was scheduled to open its season at home last night (Aug. 28) against Watertown-Mayer. The Panthers open their Wright County Conference slate Thursday at Holy Family Catholic in Victoria, Glencoe-Silver Lake enters the new season long on decorated varsity experience, but its depth, while athletic, is young. “We need to be healthy, stick together, take care of our opportunities and never play comfortably,” says head coach “Murf” Schwirtz. A look at the 2012 Panthers: • 2011 in Review — A young, but varsity-tested GSL squad posted records of 2-6 in the rugged Wright County Conference and 1712 overall. The Panthers won Sibley East’s invitational by downing NYA Central, 2-0, in the championship match. Later, they also captured the title at Heritage Christian Academy’s tournament. GSL’s season ended after it lost, 3-1, to Jordan in the first round of the Section 2 (Class AAA) tourney. • Graduation Hit — Gone are five girls, none of whom received all-conference mention. • Who Returns — All-WCC middle hitter Clarissa Ober, a 6-1 senior, is back. So are 5-6 senior outside hitter Krissy Garbers and 57 senior setter Courtney Lemke, who were recipients of honorable mention on last year’s All-WCC team. With 5-11 junior middle hitter Stephanie Klockmann and 5-7 sophomore Alexis Kerslake, GSL returns the five girls who logged the most playing minutes for the 2011 season. Numbers — The varsity roster offers three seniors, two juniors (also Erin Nowak), one sophomore, and three ninth-graders, The freshman class also supplies the JV with four players. Who to Beat in WCC — Hutchinson (8-0 last year) was hit hard by graduation, but still should be tough. Waconia (7-1) graduated one top player, while Delano (5-3) lost none. Mound-Westonka and Dassel-Cokato (each 5-3) also placed in last year’s first division, GSL Outlook — The Panthers’ aim, according to Lemke, is a finish among the top four teams in the WCC.

Panther football
New season kicks off Friday; hopes high
By Lee Ostrom Sports Editor lencoe-Silver Lake’s 2011 football edition came up four yards short of bagging an outright Wright County Conference title. Four yards is how close receiver Ryan Kuester got to the Hutchinson goal line on GSL’s final snap of a 2016 Tigers triumph. The same Glencoe-Silver Lake team came up a missed 27-yard field goal attempt awry of a Section 3 (Class AAA) championship. On the final play of a 21-20 Fairmont victory, Brandon Ebert’s kick was plenty long, but wide to the right. As a result, the Panthers finished last year 9-2; so close to 11-0 and a chance to advance at the state tournament. Head coach Scott Tschimperle said his 2011 team never stopped working, never stopped improving, never stopping battling. Winless as seventh-graders, the 2011 team’s seniors compiled a 31-6 mark during their high school years (grades 10-12). “I’m very proud of that class,” Tschimperle says. Now, though, a new season is about to begin. This Friday, WCC

New-look WCC, new section for GSL football
The Wright County Conference has grown to 11 members for the fall 2012 sports season, and with the additions of Holy Family Catholic and New London-Spicer come divisions. For football, GSL has been placed in the West Division of the WCC with Annandale, Dassel-Cokato, Litchfield and New London-Spicer. The six members with the six larger enrollments — Delano, Holy Family Catholic, Hutchinson, Mound-Westonka, Orono and Waconia — make up the East Division. As of now, division champions will

be left with that, division crowns. There will be no end-of-the-regularseason clash to determine one overall Wright County Conference champion. GSL football is experiencing a change in section assignment, too.

Since the end of the 2011 season, the Minnesota State High School League has added a seventh classification in football. As a result, GSL football relocates from Section 3 of Class AAA to Section 2 of Class AAAA. There, the Panthers join Dassel-Cokato, Hutchinson, Mankato East, Marshall and New Ulm. With only six teams, two will receive byes through the Oct. 23 first round of this year’s tourney and directly into the Oct. 28 semifinals — where they will play at home. High seed also plays host to this year’s Section 2 (Class AAAA) championship game Friday evening, Nov. 2.

GSL girls work hard, but fall to Willmar, 2-0
By Lee Ostrom Sports Editor Jennyfer Jimenez snapped a scoreless tie with a goal 99 seconds into the second half, Shelby Schneider added a rebound tally at the left post five minutes later, and Willmar’s suffocating defense did the rest, as the Cardinals defeated GSL 2-0 on opening day (Aug. 23) at Stevens Seminary Stadium. “We’re all right,” GlencoeSilver Lake head coach Zach Otto-Fisher said, expresing confidence that his team’s effort would have produced a different result against other opponents on the Panthers’ schedule. Indeed, Willmar played like the veteran team it is. Otto-Fisher said the guests “dominated” the 50-50 balls, controlling most of the throwins and getting the upper hand in a good share of the physical battles. But GSL did not shy away; rather, the Panthers competed to the final second. “They know they worked hard,” Otto-Fisher said. *** For its opener, GSL girls’ soccer lined up in its 4-2-3-1 like this: Goalie — Brianna Elsing (grade 12). Defense (from right) — Keisha Prafke (10), Yodee Rivera (11), Frances Zuniga (11), Lucia Vega (11). Midfield — Taylor Breidenbach (12), Mercy Rakow (12), Attack — Kenzie Boozikee (8), Kaitlyn Cohrs (12), Alex Brusven (12), Striker — Addie Luehrs (8). During the match, OttoFisher rotated in three other players, namely forward Maddie Kuehn (8), midfielder Jordan Breidenbach (8) and defender Macy Rhodes (8). Two returning starters from last year’s team, both from the back row of defense, were ineligible to play in GSL’s opener. Their return will give Otto-Fisher a 17-girl varsity roster to work with on game days. When Glencoe-Silver Lake lost by a 5-1 score at Willmar last year, it played with fewer than 11 girls for much of the match.

are high. Most of last year’s goodhands players return, including All-WCC safety Ethan Maass, honorable-mention offensive backs Dalton Clouse and Kuester, plus sophomore quarterback Keaton Anderson. Defensive end Ray Eberhard is the lone decorated returnee in either line. Overall, depth is “an area of concern,” according to Tschimperle, who as of Aug. 22 reported working with 46 boys in grades 10-12. That includes 12 seniors, 14 juniors and 20 sophomores. (GSL football rosters also make room for 26 ninthgraders, 38 eighth-graders and 22 seventh-graders,) “We need our younger kids to grow up fast,” Tschimperle says. A look at GSL’s platoons: Colton Butler at right end. Each is a junior. Neither guard stands taller than 5-10. But Tschimperle says all four are smart, strong and understand the game. About the returnees on the line, Tschimperle calls Skoglund a real “leader,” says Ebert is “playing like a three-year starter,” and praises Rose for the way he’s battled back from adversity – and added another “10 pounds of muscle,” too. On the depth chart, support comes from the defense platoon at every position but the guards, where senior Austin Jackson backs up Lepel on the left side and classmate Eric Thalmann backs up Jones on the right.

Offense
Lost via graduation are Tony Mizuhata and Connor Longhenry, last year’s outstanding Wright County Conference back and lineman. Gone, too, are the 2011 team’s other tackle, along with a versatile 6-5 guard and his 6-2 running mate at the other guard. Returning are QB Anderson, who made 11 varsity starts as a freshman last year; fullback Clouse, a junior who rushed for 727 yards (5.3 pc)
Keaton Anderson returns at QB. So does center Michael Skoglund, now a senior. in 2011, and senior speedster Kuester, who might line up as a halfback, a slotback, a flanker, or a kick returner. Up front, Michael Skoglund returns for a second fall at center; two-year starting ends Brandon Ebert and Reed Dunbar are back again, although Dunbar appears headed to the defense platoon; and Nick Rose, GSL’s right guard until breaking a leg last year, seems set to take over at right tackle. The Panthers will not be as big as they were a year ago, but they figure to be quicker and more explosive. Jake Stuedemann, a “lightning quick” junior who played in the defensive backfield a year ago, shifts to the offense, where he becomes the I-back (when GSL breaks its traditional Wishbone). “He’s got moves,” according to Tschimperle, who does not picture Stuedemann running with Mizuhata’s power, but does see him making tacklers miss at the start of long gains. Team him with Kuester, a much-decorated track sprinter who is flat-out fast, and Clouse, who runs hurdles in the spring, and beware of the speed. “I like what we have,” says Tschimperle. That includes line additions Nolan Lepel and Zach Jones at the guards, Adam Eberhard at left tackle and

Graduation has taken two All-WCC outside linebackers (Dylan Jenkins and Derek Weber), two all-league defensive linemen (Martin Martinez and Casey Style), and two brothers who rotated at a defensive tackle. The key returnee is Maass, whose 118 total tackles a year ago were 45 more than any other GSL stopper. Of Maass’ tackles, 65 were solo efforts. “He’s just a very gifted athlete,” Tschimperle says. Also returning to the secondary are fellow seniors Travis Rothstein and Derek Bratsch at the corners. Up front, Ray Eberhard (62, 230 and a three-year starter) is at left end, while Dunbar (6-2, 205) comes over from the offense to take over at right end. GSL likes to rotate three boys at the two tackle spots. This year, they look to be (65, 260) Josh VonBerge as the “plugger,” (6-0, 200) Jeremy Tower, a quick, strong “surprise,” and (5-9, 195) Tyler Donnay as the versatile third tackle. Permits for 2 oversized buildings gain approval
By Lori Copler Staff Writer The McLeod County Planning Advisory Committee made quick work of two conditional use permit applications for oversized buildings at its Wednesday, Aug. 22, meeting. The committee had public hearings on both permits, with no members of the public protesting either application. Dann Morris, who owns property on the south side of Highway 212 near Major Avenue, asked for a permit to construct additions to an existing shed for his homebased manufacturing business. Morris plans to add office space, a bathroom and a garage to the north side of the existing structure, which will make it greater than the 2,400 square feet allowed by the county ordinance. Morris said he wants to add the space to the north side of the building because it allows visibility to his driveway “and we can see who is coming up on the yard.” Morris also said he will comply with the septic ordinance by either going with a new mound system or a new septic tank to accommodate the proposed bathroom. However, Morris’ presentation to the planning committee included 200 more square feet of space than his original proposal, which was recommended for approval by Sumter Township. The committee decided to recommend approval of the permit to the County Board at its Sept. 18 meeting. In the meantime, Zoning Administrator Larry Gasow will forward the revised plan to township officials, who will then have the opportunity to provide comment before the County Board’s final vote. Curtis Berry of Penn Township submitted a conditional use permit application for an 8,000-square-foot shed on his five-acre parcel of property on Page Avenue southeast of Brownton. His proposal shed also exceeds the 2,400 square feet allowed by ordinance. Berry intends to use the shed to house his semi tractortrailer. Don Albrecht, Penn Township clerk, said the township had recommended approval of the permit. Albrecht indicated that the shed will have limited visibility to neighbors as it is located in the back corner of the property. Because there was no other comment, the committee will recommend approval of the permit to the County Board, which will act on the permit as part of its consent agenda on Sept. 4.

GSL tennis edges Providence 4-3 to cap a 3-2 opening week
By Lee Ostrom Sports Editor Michaela Boesche, Kelly Beneke and Piper Davis won deciding third-set tiebreakers, and so did the doubles pair of Mariah Exsted and Callie Raduenz, allowing the Glencoe-Silver Lake tennis team to edge Providence Academy, 43, and cap a winning first week. In season-opening matches on their home courts, the Panthers defeated Sibley East but lost to Jordan on Aug. 21; then were blanked by Centennial before topping St. Cloud Cathedral and Providence on Aug. 23. All in all, not a bad start for a GSL program that graduated nine quality seniors after the 2011 season. Head coach Robb DeCorsey said girls in his new lineup showed some “real mental toughness” while pulling out a victory in their third and final match last Thursday. Four-to-3 is the score by which Providence Academy defeated GSL in the semifinals of last year’s Section 5 (Class A) team tournament. Providence went on from there to win the section title (6-1 over Annandale) and advance to state. În the teams’ first meeting of 2012, Providence Academy won team points at first and second doubles, as well as first singles, where Eva Sullivan won a third-set tiebreaker to edge past GSL’s Kelly Arnold. The Panthers won the other close matches, as senior Boesche won her third-set tiebreaker over Hannah Seitz, 10-8, at second singles; senior Beneke followed suit against Lauren Athmann, 10-6, at third singles; sophomore Davis came through against Emily Prom, 10-7, at fourth singles; and junior Exsted and sophomore Raduenz won their tiebreaker, 10-7, over Shannon White and Frances Christianson at third doubles. After the first week’s matches, Boesche and Beneke sport 4-1 records — each taking her lone loss in GSL’s dual with Centennial. Exsted, who went 2-1 teamed with Raduenz and 2-0 with Chantelle Wolff, also is off to a 4-1 start. GSL’s annual visit to New Prague’s invitational was canceled due to rain this past Saturday. The Panthers were slated to open their Wright County Conference schedule at home against Orono on Aug. 28.
