By Lee Ostrom Sports Editor he setup was the stuff of dreams: ... Three balls and two strikes ... One on and two out ... Bottom of the seventh inning of the state tournament’s championship game ... Plato trailing Ely by a 3-2 score. All Adam Prehn needed to do to finish the dream before waking was belt a home run. Prehn did just that. On a Chamber of Commerce Sunday (Aug. 5) afternoon in Sacred Heart, his walk-off screamer sent the Plato American Legion Post 641 team to Wahpeton, N.D., for Thursday’s opening round of games in the Central Plains Division II Regional. Plato, a winner of nine straight post-season games, and now 17-4 overall, plays Wisconsin Dells at 5 p.m. tomorow. The eight-team, double-elimination event continues through Aug. 12. “This is unbelievable; ... pretty crazy stuff,” said centerfielder Ethan Maass, the state tournament MVP after going 6-for-12, scoring three runs, knocking in three and pitching a three-hit shutout in Plato’s three games. “I was just hoping he’d get a hit and tie the score,” Maass continued. “... The next thing I knew, it was gone. Just a shot.” Prehn, one of two seniors on the Plato roster, was not thinking home run, either. “I wanted to hit it up the middle and get that (tying) run in,” he said. Early in the count, Prehn said he let route-going Ely pitcher Riley Bernsdorf get away with a hanging curveball, which he only fouled off. But at 3-2, Prehn did not miss a fastball that came to him “right down the middle” of the plate. “Right away, I thought it was a double,” Prehn said. But the line drive to the left-center gap kept rising; then the ball disappeared. Cole Petersen, who led off the bot-

Adam Prehn’s dramatic blast makes Plato Post 641 a state champion
T
Plato American Legion Post 641 players wait at home plate to mob teammate Adam Prehn, after the senior slugger belted a walk-off, two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Prehn’s hit gave Plato a 4-3 win over Ely in the championship game of the Division II state tournament. tom of the seventh by pulling a single to right, was off second base at the crack of Prehn’s bat. “With two out, I just started running,” he said, adding that he did not know the ball left the yard until he picked up an umpire’s signal for a home run. “It was a great feeling,” said Petersen, who pitched the first 61⁄3 innings Sunday. “This is amazing.” Prehn, whose wild pitch in the top of the seventh allowed Ely to tally a go-ahead run, made himself the winning pitcher — in relief — when he clouted his home run. Plato skipper Dean Schwirtz said the state title is a reward to be shared with all the kids who have participated in the program over the years. He said the 2012 team has worked hard, consistently put team ahead of individuals, and stayed close. Rising to the big event as one, Plato did not commit an error in any of its three state tourney games. “They’re a phenomenal group,” Schwirtz said, The state tourney opened Friday morning (Aug. 3) with a thriller matching Plato Post 641 and the team from Eden Valley-Watkins – home of the 2011 Division II state champions.

After his big blast, Adam Prehn tries to catch his breath.
Post 641 team came from behind twice in last at-bats
On its march to an American Legion state championship, Plato’s 4-3 victory over Ely in Sunday’s state finale was not the only time Post 641 turned a one-run deficit into a onerun victory with its last at-bats. In the fourth round of the doubleelimination Third District tournament, Plato trailed Jordan 4-3 with one out and no one aboard in the bottom of the seventh inning. Then Teddy Petersen drew a walk, used his speed to advance and eventually scored the tying run on a Jordan throwing error. The winning run scored a little later, when Nolan Lepel’s clean single knocked home Ethan Maass. That result left Plato as the district tournament’s last unbeaten team. Post 641 stayed that way, too, finishing a 6-0 run through the districts

after thumping Jordan 5-0 in the rematch. But things might have been very different had Plato not pulled out its first meeting with Jordan. *** Here’s another twist. worth team did not play in the championship game; rather, it was booted out of the tourney and sent home for motel misconduct. Rather than playing for third place. Ely and Stewartville played for berths in the championship game and the regional tourney. *** Format for this weekend’s Central Plains Regional tourney is doubleelimination. First-round pairings Thursday, Aug. 9, in Wahpeton, N.D., are as follows: • Ely vs. Las Vegas (Nevada), 11 a.m. • Iola (Kansas) vs. Grafton (N.D.), 2 p.m. • Wisconsin Dells vs. Plato, 5 p.m. • Wahpeton vs. Groton (S.D.), 8 p.m. Six games are on Friday’s scheduel, three more Saturday, and the championship game(s) is set for Sunday.
Wendlandt’s gem keeps Bruins alive
By Lori Copler Staff Writer The Brownton Bruins are still alive in the Region 7(C) tournament, with a loss and a win, and will now face Winsted Friday at 5:30 p.m. Watertown slipped past Brownton 1-0 in the opening game, which started last Friday, was stopped by rain in the seventh inning, and was resumed Saturday afternoon. The Red Devils’ first-inning run was all they needed, as they shut out Brownton, stranding 15 Bruin runners — seven in scoring position — throughout the course of the game. Which, said Bruins’ skipper Doug Schuette, was a key factor in the loss. “We left seven runners in scoring position and had one thrown out at home,” said Schuette. “In both the seventh and eighth innings, we had bases loaded with one out, and didn’t come through with the hit that was needed. Watertown made some big plays in the field to get out of the innings where we had runners in scoring position.” One of those plays was in the eighth, when Watertown’s Joe Brandenburg fired a shot from centerfield to pinch the Bruins’ Nick Heller at the plate as he was trying to score on Deryk Randt’s fly ball. The Devils’ run was scored by Ryan Haugartner, who singled in the first, stole his way to third, and scored on Jarod Duske’s base hit. Schuette said he was pleased with the pitching performances of draftee Mike Mueller of Hamburg, who started for Brownton, and Ryan Grams, who pitched relief on Saturday. Mueller allowed one run on five hits, struck out four and walked two in 61⁄3 innings, while Grams struck out four, walked none and allowed no hits in 22⁄3 innings. The Bruins had seven hits, but “other than the two in the eighth, we didn’t string any of them together,” said Schuette. Taylor Schuette and Spencer Glaeser had two hits each for Brownton, while Matt Schwichtenberg, Heller and Chad Genz each had one.

vance in the Region 7 (Class C) amateur tournament. The Brewers lost an elimination game 7-0 to Adam Kostecka and the YA Cardinals on Saturday. That ends a 10-15 season. Glencoe tallied three unearned runs off GI draftee Tony Wischnack in the top of the first; the last two resulting from a Ryan Style home run to left. After the Irish got even, the Brewers got to Wischnack for four more in the third. Brad Hundt doubled home two runners, Style singled across another, and Stephen Wiblemo tacked on a sacrifice fly. With two on and two out in the last of the fourth, though, Zachow got every bit of a first-pitch fastball from John Thell, who had used changeups to retire the slugger on groundouts in two previous at-bats. Thell said the book on Zachow is that he almost never attacks a first pitch. That was not the case in the fourth inning. “That’s the longest home run I’ve ever seen,” Thell said.

Council OKs proceeding with trail paving on 4-1 vote
By Rich Glennie Editor Glencoe City Council on Monday night approved the specifications and plans for the Buffalo Highlands Trail and called for bids for paving the two-mile project. The new hiking-biking trail runs from Morningside Avenue east to County Road 1 along Highway 212. But the vote to move ahead was not unanimous. Acting Mayor John Schrupp voted against it saying he was tired of spending tax dollars on this project. He said the city’s share of the project is estimated at over $70,000, including city funds spent earlier on engineering fees, and “I’ve seen six people on it the entire summer!” “I use it almost every day,” replied council member Dan Perschau. “Once it’s paved, you’ll see more people,” City Administrator Mark Larson predicted. Jason Black of Short Elliott Hendrickson (SEH) said the plans and specifications call for a 10-foot wide path with shoulders. The paving would be of 2-1/2 inches of bituminous. He said the trail crosses the county road in two spots and it also crosses two private driveways. At those locations, the paving will be thicker. The project also needs to be handicap accessible, Black said. The trail has signs at both ends warning motorists to stay off the trail. But it was felt additional signs may be needed near the private and county accesses as well. Black said the plans have been approved by the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT), and the bid opening is set for Sept. 6. The project cost is estimated at $225,000, with $180,000 of that coming from a federal enhancement grant. Another 20 percent of the cost is from a recently approved Department of Natural Resources (DNR) trails grant, and the remaining $7,000 is the city’s share. Black said construction would begin in late September or early October, and will be completed in a week or two. Council unanimously approved signing an agreement with the DNR on the trail grant, but Schrupp wanted the matter sent back to the park board to determine where the city’s $7,000 will come from. He said it was clear last March that park improvement funds would not be used for this project. “Before we OK the specifications and plans, I’d like to know where the $7,000 comes from,” Schrupp said. Council member Gary Ziemer asked if the city has enough time to act on the project if the matter is sent back to the park board. Larson felt the city can proceed with the bidding process and enter into the contract in the meantime, and that will give city staff time to determine where the $7,000 will be found.

For seven innings, pitchers Prehn and Hayden Wilner locked up in a scoreless duel. The two defenses were so dominant, no runner reached third base until the top of the eighth, when Plato’s Teddy Petersen got hit by a pitch, later took third on a wild pitch, and then scored on a wild pitch. But EVW speedster Kevin Kramer manufactured a tying run of his own in the bottom of the eighth. In the Plato ninth, Parker Kerslake led off with a single, and his runner, Brody Bratsch, eventually scored on Travis Rothstein’s perfectly placed safety-squeeze bunt. Teddy Petersen and Maass added RBI hits of their own, and Prehn whacked a sacrifice fly. Final score: Plato 5, EVWatkins 1. The key hit, though, was supplied by Rothstein, who entered the game late as a defensive specialist in left. In a time-out huddle with Schwirtz and Bratsch, Rothstein said the coach asked him if he could get a bunt down. Rothstein said he could. And before a 2-1 pitch, Rothstein got the bunt sign. Wilner helped out, serving a fastball, “right in the center of the plate,” Rothstein said. Given the big lead, Prehn gave up a double to Wilner; then mowed down the next three batters in a row — including a strikeout of Zach Schlengen to end the game. Prehn, who broke his nose in a collision with Teddy Petersen during the district tourney, said he breathed comfortably and felt no ill effects from the injury. He struck out eight and walked only three in the fivehitter. Prehn said he had good location of a two-seam fastball that breaks in on right-handed batters, plus his curveball. “Adam had a presence on the mound,” Schwirtz said. Saturday, it was Maass’ turn to pitch a gem. In a 7-0 victory over Stewartville, the junior lefty walked three and struck out nine while allowing three singles. Maass helped his own cause by rapping out three hits, including a solo home run in the third inning. “I’m seeing the ball a lot better,” he said. Plato did not tally its second run until the sixth, when Maass, Prehn, Nolan Lepel and Reed Dunbar erupted for singles on consecutive at-bats. Ahead 3-0, Plato added four more runs in the seventh – the final RBI hit going to catcher Reed Dunbar, who finished a 3-for-4 batting performance. *** Late Sunday afternoon, still a little numbed by Prehn’s dramatic home run, Maass tried to put Plato’s three-weekend run to a state title all in words. “This is a big team effort,” he said.

many when Tony is pitching,” Schuette continued. “Winsted also is a very goodhitting team, and our pitchers will need to change speeds and use good pitch location to keep their hitters off balance. We’ll also need to play solid defense behind our pitching — don’t want to give them any additional opportunities.” Again, as he did last week, Schuette is waiting until after this Wednesday’s practice session to decide on the Bruins’ starting arm. “Losing the Watertown game definitely made our task more challenging… but you never know, that’s why we play the games,” Schuette concluded.

Guest column:
Will Supreme Court’s ignorance torpedo Americans’ freedom?
By James Bovard Americans have never had reliable protection against the ignorance of the Supreme Court. During the past 80 years, Supreme Court justices have routinely rubberstamped government policies that they grossly failed to understand. Black-robed economic illiteracy is perhaps the Obama administration’s best hope in the Court’s pending decision on the constitutionality of Obamacare. At the oral arguments in late March, neither the justices nor the attorneys arguing the case seemed to understand the 1942 precedent case that provides the linchpin for Obamacare’s individual mandate. In Wickard v. Filburn, the Supreme Court decreed that “it is hardly lack of due process for the government to regulate that which it subsidizes.” But the Roosevelt-era Court completely failed to recognize how the feds had ravaged a market before they forcibly seized control over all producers. At the time of the 1942 ruling, the Department of Agriculture dictated how many acres each of the nation’s 1.5 million wheat farmers could grow. Roscoe Filburn, an Indiana farmer who slightly exceeded his quota, claimed that the government had no right to prohibit him from growing wheat on his own land to feed to his livestock. The Roosevelt administration, in a brief to the Supreme Court, claimed that it must have a free hand to “suppress ... a public evil.” And what was the “public evil”? Wheat surpluses. The Court unanimously concluded that the government was justified even in restricting “the amount of wheat ... to which one may forestall resort to the market by producing for his own needs.” The Court concluded that federal action was justified in part because wheat exports had fallen sharply since the 1920s, resulting in a “large surplus in production.” But that surplus existed largely because the Roosevelt administration had driven the price of U.S. wheat to almost three times the world market price. Planners assumed that high crop prices would somehow make America rich — or at least spur a national recovery. The Roosevelt administration scorned exports, preferring to restrict domestic production in order to inflate U.S. prices. Nobel laureate economist Theodore W. Schultz denounced New Deal farm programs for “putting a ‘Chinese Wall’ around our export farmers.” The Roosevelt administration first murdered the wheat exports and then threw itself on the Court’s mercy on the grounds that wheat farmers were orphans. But the justices in 1942 showed scant curiosity about the cause of the loss of exports, treating it like an act of God. The key to Roosevelt’s policy was that prices were no longer permitted to provide signals to buyers and sellers. High federal price supports encouraged farmers to boost production, and then politicians cited supposed surpluses as proof of the need for perpetual control of agriculture. The Supreme Court’s decision empowered the Agriculture Department to trample farmers’ rights and freedoms for the next 60 years. Unfortunately, at least some of today’s Supreme Court members are as clueless as the 1942 panel that swallowed the government’s self-serving claims. Justice Stephen Breyer asked one of the lawyers arguing about Wickard’s relevance to Obamacare, “Didn’t they make that man growing his own wheat go into the market and buy other wheat for his — for his cows?” Similarly, Justice Ruth Ginsburg declared that “Wickard was you must buy; we are not going to let you use the home-grown wheat. You have got to go out in the market and buy that wheat that you don’t want.” If Supreme Court justices have zero understanding of the most important precedent for Obamacare, it is unlikely that they will recognize the danger of sanctifying politicians’ vast arbitrary power over health care. There are stark parallels between the growing federal takeover of medical care and the 1930s takeover of agriculture. In the same way that high price supports spurred farmers to boost wheat production, government subsidies have driven up the demand for health-care services. The feds helped set off a health-care price explosion — and then invoked rising costs to justify seizing far more power over doctors, hospitals, insurance companies, and private citizens. When Barack Obama bewails the number of Americans without health insurance, he forgets to mention that legislative and bureaucratic mandates have made health insurance far more expensive than it would otherwise be. The market for medical services has been ravaged almost as badly as U.S. farm markets in the New Deal era. The mere fact that government throws money at an activity does not entitle Uncle Sam to dictate endless terms to both producers and consumers. Neither Congress nor the Supreme Court has any right to control what they do not understand. “Good intentions” cannot absolve perpetual economic mangling. James Bovard is policy adisor at The Future of Freedom Foundation (www.fff.org) and the author of Attention Deficit Democracy (2006) as well as Lost Rights (1994).

County Road 15 bridge work to begin Aug. 13
Replacement of the County Road 15 bridge, five miles north of Glencoe over the south fork of the Crow River, is scheduled to begin Aug. 13, according to John Brunkhorst, county highway engineer. Duinnick, Inc. of Prinsburg was awarded the project. Brunkhorst said the new three-span concrete slab-type bridge will be 153 feet long and 40 feet wide, which is about 25 percent longer and 30 percent wider than the existing 54-year-old structure. The road will be closed to all traffic at the bridge. A signed detour utilizing county roads 55, 2 and 22 will be in place for through traffic. The bridge replacement is expected to be completed in the middle of October. The $700,000 project is funded through state bridge bonds and county state aid highway funds, Brunkhorst said. Any questions can be directed to Phil Schmalz, project engineer, at 320-484-4362 or e-mail phillip. schmalz@co.mcleod.mn.us.
